Yes you're going to have to make some tough decisions to bring it down to one player....

If anyone goes for anyone but the obvious then lol ......
ReplyDeleteDerek Randall
ReplyDeleteMost graditude towards Clive, but favourite, yes it's Rags too!
ReplyDeleteYes Derek, happy times watching him !
ReplyDeleteTend to associate Rags with the 80s more myself for Notts, despite his heroics in the centenary Test, so although not in the same class as Derek as a batsman, my most vivid memory of the late 70s would probably be Basharat Hassan. Distinctly recall him scoring a 100 in a 40 over game, watching from the old Parr Stand and that unorthodox stance he had at the crease.
ReplyDeleteRandall Stay safe everyone!
ReplyDeletePlayers on the photograph - from a hazy memory
ReplyDeleteTop Row
Paul Todd - big hitter when he got going
John Birch ??
Saxelby - medium fast bowler ??
Clive Rice ?? with loads of hair !
Dont Know
Dont Know
Derek Randall
Bottom Row
The wonderful Barry Stead - medium fast bowler and big hitter from time to time
Pasty Harris " bring on the heavy roller"was the shout from the stands !
Mike "Flashing Blade" Smedley - stylish batter but the one day game was not his style
Dont Know
Basher Hassan - he had a very awkward looking stance - but a reliable batsman
Fav player of the 1970s Notts side has to be Derek Rags Randall . What a superb fielder - not seen a better one . There was always a sense of excitement when Derek came to the crease . Would he be out first ball ? Would he run his partner out ?
Or would he crack some glorious cover drives and turn many singles into twos ? Very watchable and very unpredictable but always entertaining . I remember if he took a high catch in the deep he would often hurredly put the ball in a trouser pocket and pretend he hadnt caught it . Notts have never had a player quite like him since he retired .
I seem to remember he set up some sort of business selling dried flowers ?

DeleteOk, thanks BIG Dave. I can honestly say I have never heard of Peter Johnson. I thought when The Chairman nailed it above, it was somehow a very early photo of Johnno with long hair who had grown 6 inches but at the same time, knew it just couldn't be as his era was later.
DeleteThere was a season, even in the ghastly pre-Hadlee seventies (must be after this one as I assume Rice was one of them? 1975?) when the entire top order each scored 1000 first class runs and unless I am much mistaken Peter Johnson was one of them - him, Harris, Rice, Smedley and Randall I guess, unless Pasty was keeping and batting 7 by then (what a waste!) and the other one was Basher. Shows how even with a well performing batting line up you can't win without wicket taking bowlers. Nothing against Phil W, Bill T and Bob White especially when it was turning but you can see how Barry Stead was carrying this attack.
ReplyDeletePeter Johnson a highly talented batsman who captained MCC Schools in 1969. By 1970 he was a student at Nottingham University which limitrd his opportunities with Notts for the next few years. But did make his County Championship debut in August 1970. In 1975 he batted superbly, particularly his maiden century against Champions elect Foxes at Trent Bridge. 1975 was a much better year than the 4 or so before it, for Notts cricket. We we're no longer thrashed and won some games, but yes attack lacked bite Peter Johnson lost form in 1976 and his place. He was recalled briefly in 1977, but apart from a century against Yorkshire struggled. A likeable and highly intelligent man he then took a career outside the game.
ReplyDeleteAnyone heard from PJ aka Philip Measures recently?
