Yorkshire Vitality T20 Blast at Trent Bridge Win REPORT

DUCKETT GUIDES OUTLAWS TO VICTORY

Following a Fletcher 5-fer

Man of the match Ben Duckett with a Notts best 86 not out off 53 balls (10x4,2x6) steered Notts home in an exciting Bank Holiday contest against Yorkshire. He followed an excellent performance patrolling the ropes with a well paced innings with plenty of switch hits which made it hard for Yorkshire skipper Tom Kohler-Cadmore to set fields. Notts chasing 191 to win lost Hales and Clarke to the first 11 balls of the innings. Duckett was involved in stands of 85 in nine overs with Chris Nash (55), 42 in four overs with Dan Christian and finally an unbeaten 51 in 4.3 overs with Tom Moores as Notts got home by six wickets with 4 balls to spare.

Kohler-Cadmore failed to give off spinner Adam Lyth (3-0-14-1) his last over as Fisher and Pillans conceded 45 runs in 3.2 overs at the death. Earlier Lyth (53) smashed the Notts bowlers early doors as Yorkshire stood at 82-0 after 8 overs. Joe Root followed his 64 yesterday against Derbyshire with a classy 65 (43 balls. 9x4) but Yorkshire at one stage looking at 200 plus, lost their last seven wickets in their 16 balls to finish with a score of 190. Luke Fletcher took five wickets with last 10 balls to finish with T20 best figures of 5-43.

Both teams were unchanged. Yorkshire won the toss and elected to bat on a pitch with short boundaries on the Bridgford Road side. Carter bowled the first over from the Pavilion End and conceded seven including a boundary off the second ball by Adam Lyth. Ball went for six in the second over. Lyth hit Fletcher for boundaries of the first, second and fifth balls of the third over, Yorkshire 28 for one off three overs. Off the third ball of the fourth over, Kohler-Cadmore (6) charged Carter and was stumped by a country mile, 29 for one. Joe Root reversed swept Carter for four off his second ball, five off the over. Jake Ball conceded nine plus a leg bye off the fifth over, including a boundary for Lyth. In over number six, Lyth hit Fletcher for a leg side six, Yorkshire 53 for one after the completion of the power play.

The seventh over bowled by Christian went for 12, including two boundaries for Root. Patel took a shellacking from Lyth with successive deliveries going for 464 respectively, 17 off the over. Mullaney picked up the second wicket when Lyth (53 balls off 29 balls, 7x4, 2x6) held out to Christian at wide long on, 83 for two in the ninth over. Patel (2-0-26-0) conceded nine off the tenth over, Yorkshire 96 for two off 10 overs.

Mullaney went for five singles and then Root hit him to the ropes through backward point in the eleventh over. Harry Brook swept Carter for six then the off spinner conceded five singles, 116 for 2 off 12 overs. Harry Brook found the ropes twice in Mullaney's third over. Mullaney (3-0-26-1) was not given a further over. Christian conceded six singles in the 14th over. Brook hit Carter (4-0-32-1) for a leg side boundary, 143 for two off 15 overs.

Notts fought back well in the final quarter of the innings. Brook (39 off 26 balls – 3x1, 1x6) hit Ball for a straight four, but next ball perished caught by Duckett on the cover boundary, 147 for three off 15.2 overs. Will Fraine hit Ball for an extra cover boundary, 10 off the over. Seven runs were obtained from the 17th over bowled by Christian (3-0-25-0). Fraine (16 off eight balls) hit Fletcher for a massive six over mid wicket and was out next ball caught by Hales at long on. Fletcher removed Fisher's leg stump as he departed for a golden duck, 168 for five. The last ball was hit for a leg side four by Root, 13 off the over. Thompson (1) held out to Hales at long on, a second wicket for Jake Ball. Root hit Ball for consecutive fours. Tattersall departed for a golden duck, yorked by Ball (4-0-36-3),184 for seven off 19 overs. A brilliant high catch on the long on ropes by the stretching Hales removed Root for 65 (off 43 balls,9x4), a third wicket for Fletcher,184 for eight. Off the fourth ball of the over, Pillans hit Fletcher for four. Hales picked his fourth catch of the innings running round the boundary he caught Pillans for 5, 190 for nine. Hill going for a scoop shot missed and was bowled as Fletcher(4-0-43-5) went nap. Yorkshire finishing on 190 all out off 20 overs, which looked a par score on an excellent batting surface. Notts had bowled adequately and although perhaps a bit leaden footed at times in the field, crucially held all their chances. Hales with four catches in the outfield equalled the club record for most catches in a T20 innings, Will Smith catching four Surrey batsmen in the Trent Bridge semi-final in 2006.

Hales (4) hit Lyth (Pavilion End) for a leg side four off the fourth ball of the opening over but then was caught at mid on by Kohler-Cadmore, 5 for one. Clarke hit two off the final delivery of the over. Fisher was hit for boundaries by Nash and Clarke. But the ball after finding the mid-wicket ropes, Clarke (6) blasted the ball straight  to Lyth at cover, 16 for two after two overs. A long hop from Root was hit through backward point by Nash for a four, eight off the third over. Fisher then bowled his second over, Notts 30 for two off four overs. Duckett hit Jordan Thompson for six over mid wicket and Nash hit the same bowler for a boundary also through mid wicket, 11 off the over. Duckett swept Root for 4. Notts 50 for 2 at the end of the power play.

Pillans conceded seven off the seventh over as Notts were eight behind Yorkshire at the equivalent stage. Poysden conceded 14 off the eighth over including boundaries for Nash through extra cover and Duckett on the reverse sweep. Pillans in the ninth over in was hit in to the point ropes by Nash and the right-hander followed this up with consecutive sixes over mid wicket, 19 off the over. Root (3-0-13-0) conceded seven off the tenth over, Notts 97 for two off 10 overs. The match was very much level at this stage.

Nash got to his 50 off 30 balls with a single off Thompson, but fell in the same over plumb leg before to a full and straight ball for 51 off 32 balls (5x4,2x6), 101 for three off 10.5 overs. Nash having scored 55 off 29 balls against Durham on Saturday is batting exceeding well in this format. A misdirected ball from Thompson saw Christian leg glance a four to fine leg, eight off the over. Lyth only conceded two off the 12th over bowled by Adam Lyth.

Duckett pulled leg spinner Poysden (2-0-32-0) to the boundary through mid wicket. A two followed and then the left hander hit Poysden for six into The Fridge. Next ball was a four through backward square leg as Duckett got to his 50 off 34 balls, 18 off the over. Notts 125 for three off 13 overs. England Under 19 player George Hill the right arm seamer schooled at Sedburgh was hit for six over mid wicket by Christian, three balls later the youngster bowled a full toss on leg stump and was hit to the square leg boundary, 13 off the side.

Christian (21 off 11 balls) hit Thompson (3-0-25-2) for four through fine leg but fell next ball caught on the mid wicket ropes by the running Harry Brook, 143 for four off 14.5 overs. Lyth conceded five off the 16th over, Notts 149 for four off 16 overs. Lyth was strangely not given his last over  Duckett hit Fisher for a leg side four then scampered a single, then Moores hit a boundary for through point and then ran a two, 12 off the over.

Off the second ball off Pillans over a poor leg side ball was glanced for four by Duckett. Two balls later a low full toss was hit for four by Moores, 11 off the over, 172 for four off 18 overs. A poor ball from Fisher was hit through the covers by Moores to the boundary, a single followed. Off the third ball, Duckett hit a four through backward square and then next a short ball from Fisher (4-0-40-1) was crashed through square leg by the left hander, 14 off the over. Notts needed five off the last over, Duckett dinked Pillans (3.2-0-45-0) over the keeper's head for four and next ball he hit a four through mid wicket to win the contest with four balls to spare. The Yorkshire seamers were somewhat wayward in the closing stages, but Duckett and Moores (21 not out off 14 balls) remained cool under pressure.

With a powerful batting line up, Notts look a team highly likely to qualify for the knock phases. MAG

  1. Should be the favourites for this encounter as the Tykes are without Bairstow, Rashid, Malan, Willey and possibly Joe Root also ? Anyone who knows me will vouch for the fact that no one is more frustrated with the current situation of not being able to get into to the games, but I have to give TB massive credit. Our live stream is the best I have encountered so far.

  2. Apart from a couple of times when they were showing replays, I thought the stream from Durham on Saturday was excellent showing what could be done through the use of one ball tracking camera that allowed you to see exactly where the ball was going which is what is required for T20 games. Lets hope TB have tweaked their cameras to provide a similar experience.

    1. Its like they have bought a load of fancy tech but don't know how to use it. Bit like the head coach and DOC with the players.

    2. A polite message to TB - Please have a look at the streaming provided by Durham and Yorkshire for their home T20 games as an example of how to provide a quality experience. Too many instances already in the first quarter of the action of blurred pictures making it difficult to track where the ball is going - we want to see the ball in the field of play not being picked out of the stands.

  3. Yorkshire don't need Joe Root in the side when they have Will Fraine (44 off 16 balls with 2*4 and 5*6).

    1. Mentioning Will Fraine in the same sentence as Joe Root should carry a life sentence - it was against an attack more befitting of the Derbyshire Premier League(hope that doesn't come back to haunt me later on !!!!!!)

    2. To rescue you Stoney from your foot in the mouth comments about Falcon's bowling on Sunday, I think they had an off day. An off day that will cover all potential off days for the rest of the year, the biggest surprise being they managed to wear their kit the right way round. They failed to get anything else right. The commentators had a little fun at "hapless" Notts' expense, both teams having beaten us recently. Watch it on Youtube- I think Anonymous and RB would approve of the camera selection and general coverage.

    3. Kevin O'Brien MKII? Possibly would compete for a place in our red ball team, however?

    1. Blimey Philip I thought I was a glass half empty kind of guy. The nature of 2020 is that batsmen take risks in the interests of high scoring rates and in so doing will inevitably sometimes get out. Plenty of views about hales out there I'm sure but one of them is surely not that he is not up to it as a 2020 batsman. Didn't he score more runs than anyone else in the world in 2020 last year? And as for his recent Notts performances I don't know the last 10 but the last two before this season were a cracking 50 odd against Worcs tarnished by the fact that he got out and then the rest of them managed to lose the game and an awesome not out innings in the 10 wicket demolition of Middlesex in the quarter final.

  5. Well done Notts!
At last the likes Of Clarke and Ducket are showing sign of class. 190 is never going to be an easy chase
A simple plea to Alex Hales. You need to play MORE Everyday cricket! Get Notts to prepare a red ball contract for you to sign for next season . With a series of low scores you may soon find yourself out of favour with the various Blast teams scattered around the world
The upgraded " livestream " is most enjoyable so a big thanks to Notts fir the increased investment when money is obviously so tight
Good commentary from Bracey and his Yorkshire pal.
Notts are on a mini roll - can they keep it up on Wednesday.
Amazingly Notts are 5/1 favourites to lift the Blast 20 trophy
What do the Bookies know that we dont?

  6. I am sure Alex H is doing his best but he is not getting any younger and although the body strength is still there he may find his reflexes , eyesight, and instant decision making are not what they were 5-10 years ago. In sport at the highest level its rare to find sportsmen improving in their thirties( jockeys excluded). As I said in the previous post I just dont think Alex is getting enough time at the crease with not playing red ball cricket.
Can someone on here post up the scores Alex gas made in his LAST ten innings for Notts?

  7. 4, 11, 52, 83 not out, 8, 7, 60, 11, 29 and 10
In my opinion Hales remains one of best T20 openers in the World.
His record last winter was outstanding and i would also always back him to score runs in the most important matches

    1. 6 scores under 12 out of 10 Innings is poor by anyone's estimation and accurately sums up Alex's lack of consistency.

    2. Harsh PJ. Fifties in knock-out stages Q/F S/F- when it really matters, out of all the them, he's the one you'd put your money on to deliver.

  8. Thanks Mag .Lets hope Alex gets his act together on Wed.
Thanks for the fantastically detailed report on the game . The Evening Post could do with your incisive reporting skills. Reading your summary I almost felt as If I was in TB actually watching the game.

  9. A good win given it is looking tight at the top of the north group - looks the toughest of the three this year - but the bowling still seems a concern. Conceding too many runs, despite a good come back. Relying on batting to always fire, and it won't every game

    ReplyDelete
  10. Yes the Notts bowling attack now seems the main concern
The batters are now producing the goods - so we have a good chance of chasing down any Blast20 target.
But our attack seems pretty easy to score off. You just now feel that the sides we play against in the 20 over game will always get over 160 and probably 170/180 plus. As we all know , even with a side packed with big hitters there is a lot to go wrong chasing big targets. But its comforting to know that in a run chase going wrong , we have Samit coming in at No 8.
The top order are now making runs and we now just need Alex Hales to strike form .
On paper , with a batting line up like Notts - you would think all opposition sides will be thinking they have to get 180/190+ to stand a chance if beating us.
Lets hope the good run continues tomorrow night.
After all the negative stuff recently , Notts really do need a good winning run.

  11. There's more chance of Samit, Fletch and Mullaney all entering the slimmer of the year competition than Hales playing red ball cricket again?

    1. Or him playing for England again.clearly Morgan doesn’t want him.im not normally into conspiracy theories, but I get the feeling there is more we are not party to.the punishment doesn’t seem any longer to fit the crime. That said,Baz hasn’t played much cricket lately and hasn’t so far come good this t20.

    2. Yes, indeed Morgan himself has said it's a matter of trust(whatever that means) and not ability and acknowledges he's a world class white ball player. Clearly him not playing red ball did not hamper him last year when as stated earlier he had his best year in T20 around the globe. As stated his last innings for us at Trent Bridge(360 days ago -let's blame him for Cov19) was a brilliant 80odd no when we demolished the Middlesex Panthers to make yet another Finals Day.He then made 52 and left it to the rest of the muppets to somehow lose a game it was impossible to lose. So, some are now basing him on 2 appearances this season it would seem. Also, as an opener, where nearly all sides now go hard in first 6 he is bound to misfire on regular occasions alongside Jason Roy, Jonny Bairstow, Aaron Finch et all and Brendan McCullum before his retirement. it's the nature of the beast. I think there's an argument to say he comes into tournaments undercooked but that's purely from a white ball situation, it's got absolutely nothing to do with championship cricket IMO

  12. Ref Hales. Some valid points made.
Perhaps with our current batting line up- we are NOT so reliant on Alex producing the goods every match. But if he is able to score a quickfire 50 in the Blast matches you would think that Notts should go on to reach the crucial 200 mark.
If things get looking dodgy on a run chase then we have Fletcher , Carter and Ball all capable of hitting sixes to get us out of trouble
