OUTLAWS THRASH FALCONS
Derbyshire have spent this abbreviated season permanently on the road and they looked weary in the extreme tonight, batting, bowling and fielding poorly as Notts galloped to an eight wicket victory with 35 balls unused. A disciplined performance in the field saw Notts restrict Derbyshire to a paltry 142 for eight, with key man Wane Madsen falling to the first ball of the innings to Imad. Ball took 3-28 and Patel in his 100th consecutive T20 match took 2-26 removing Critchley and Hughes in consecutive balls. Billy Godleman top scored with a run a ball 47 in an under par score. Hales blasted 22 in seven balls and Clarke (16) fell to leg spinner Critchley. It was left to man of the match Duckett (57 not off 31 balls – 9 x 4, 1 x 6) and Nash (40 not out – 5x4,1x6) to add an unbroken 98 in 8.5 overs to finish off the easiest of victories.
Unchanged Notts won the toss and elected to bowl. Imad bowling from the Pavilion End took a wicket with the first ball of the innings, Wayne Madsen being caught on the square leg ropes by Duckett. Godleman hit the third ball of the over for four, the other four deliveries being dot balls. Ball went for 11 runs in the second over including two boundaries for Godleman. Du Plooy (5) hit Carter's first ball to the ropes, but the off spinner got his revenge next ball as the South African slapped him to mid on where Ball took a good leaping catch, 19 for two; five off the over. Christian conceded three plus a leg bye in the fourth over. Carter went for four in the next over. Reece (5) was all at sea and mistimed an attacking shot off Ball and only succeeded in skying the ball straight back to the bowler, 28 for three. Ball conceded just a single in his second over, Derby 29 for three at the end of the power play.
Patel conceded four in the seventh over. Godleman cut Carter for four in an over costing eight. Patel conceded 10 in the 9th over with Godleman sweeping him to the ropes. Critchley pulled Christian for four, nine off the over. Derby 60 for three off 10 overs.
Imad conceded six in the 11th over including two wides. Critchley hit Mullaney into the William Clarke Stand, 10 off the over. Critchley (24) was caught at short third man by Carter off Patel, the 4th wicket stand with Godleman was worth 48 runs in 6.4 overs. Hughes went for a golden duck missing an attempted reverse sweep and losing his middle stump, two in two for Samit, 76 for five. Three off the over, Dal cover drove Carter (4-0-27-1) for four, 10 off the 14th over including two wides. Dal hit another cover drive for four, Patel (4-0-26-2) the bowler, nine off the over. Godleman (47 off 47 balls) holed out to Patel on the square leg ropes, Mullaney (2-0-15-1) the bowler, 102 for 6 in the 16th over. Dal hit Imad (3-0-20-1) for four through third man, 10 off the over. Dal (25 off 17 balls) driving Jake Ball only succeeded in finding Mullaney at wide mid off, 113 for seven. Guest hammered Ball for a four through extra cover. Ball picked his third wicket as McKiernan was caught by Hales at mid off, 120 for eight off 18 overs. Guest straight drove Christian (3-0-24-0) for four and then followed up with pulled shot which found the ropes, 12 off the over, the most expensive of the innings. Cohen hit Ball (4-0-28-3) for an offside four as Derbyshire closed on 142 for eight with Guest on 22 and Cohen on 7.
Madsen (Radcliffe Road End) want for 11 off the first over including a pulled four for Nash and straight six for Hales. Madsen was not given another over. Hales was dropped on 6 by Cohen a swirling effort at mid off, Melton the bowler. The next ball was hit for four by Hales and followed it with a straight six and then a four through the covers. Critchley then had Hales (22) caught low down on the mid wicket ropes off Melton, 28 for two off 2 overs. Seventeen off Melton’s sole over. McKiernan conceded just a single off the third over. Clarke punched Critchley for four through the covers, five off the over. Clarke hit an offside four through the covers off Cohen and repeated the shot three balls later, 11 off the over. Clarke (16) hit a long hop from Critchley straight to du Plooy in the covers, 45 for two. Duckett switched hit Critchley for four and off the last ball of the power play Nash hit a six over long on, Notts 56 for two.
Hughes conceded seven off the seventh over including a boundary from Duckett. McKiernan (2-0-13-0) was swept for four by Duckett and was cover drove by Nash, 12 off the over. Hughes conceded two singles off the ninth over. Critchley was hit for a straight four by Nash and in the same over was swept to the ropes by Duckett, 12 off the over. A switch hit for four by Duckett off Dal brought up the 50 partnership with Nash in 32 balls, eight off the over. Duckett hit Du Plooy for four and six over mid wicket, he then switched him for four, the over finished with four leg byes, 19 off the over. Nash hit Hughes (3-0-18-0) to the point ropes, 10 off the over. Duckett got to 50 off 28 balls via an embarrassing mix up on the ropes by McKiernan and Hughes off Reece (1-0-13-0) and Nash hit the same bowler for an extra cover four. The winning hit involved Duckett sweeping Critchley for four. Notts 143 for four off 14.1 overs with Nash on 40 and Duckett on 57. Notts had coasted home and have won all six T20 games they have stepped out on the field for in 2020. Notts make the trip to Grace Road tomorrow (1700 start). MAG
Very important that no young player is allowed anywhere near the first team
ReplyDeleteYes, we don't want to be seen to be planning ahead!
DeleteWith Yorks losing tonight, we have our QF place.
ReplyDeleteStill like to beat Derbyshire tbough!
Wow. Qualified with 3 games to go is some achievement and comfortable wins in a strong T20 group is something to be proud of.
ReplyDeleteNow that qualification is done, why not try and create some contingency. 3 games left - rest some players and tell the likes of Carter, Trego, James, Barber, Budinger etc that they are in. Not as a trial, but just in case etc.
There has to be a reason this hasn’t happened. When there is a void of information, people create their own truths but surely it isn’t linked to performance targets for contract renewals or extensions? (I.e. a metric being to win as many games as possible)
Winning is a habit though but I just think there is a balance to be struck.
Peter says a few things have that I struggle to agree with, but then cricket has many ioi ions and his is a professional and I am not
ReplyDeleteHe does say Notts are a young team

Average Age 27 with 7 of 13 over 30
Many opinions it should read above
ReplyDeleteSorry, having a nightmare with my maths.
ReplyDeletePlease correct that average age to 30
24 isn't young and that's the youngest. Players might be inexperienced, but that's because they aren't given the opportunity when they are younger by PM.
ReplyDeleteAn easy win as you'll see. Momentum is with us.
