Three wickets each for Jack Morley and Xander Selby helped Lancashire's Second XI to wrap up victory by an innings and 33 runs on the final day at Notts.
Following-on in their second innings, Notts resumed on 213-1 but still trailing by 112 runs after three days of solid work from the Red Rose seconds.
Once the resistance of Ben Compton was broken early-on for 113, Lancashire's bowlers were able to fire their side to a quick victory in the morning session.
Morley (3/75) and Selby (3/26) took the headlines with excellent support from Jack Blatherwick (2/32), Liam Hurt (1/39) and Ed Moulton (1/34) as Notts' second innings came to an end at 298 all out.
Nottinghamshire's batsman fought back on the third day of Lancashire's Second XI Championship match at Lady Bay CC.
Resuming on 105-5 and still trailing by 385 runs, Notts pair Matt Carter and Dane Schadendorf added a further 30 to the total before Tom Aspinwall began an incredible spell by taking the first wicket of the day.
Aspinwall then ran through the Notts lower order, as the home side were bowled out for 159, the young seamer finishing with figures of 5/19 from just 4.1 overs. With Notts still trailing by 331 runs, the follow-on was enforced by Lancashire.
When Jack Blatherwick struck early in the reply, trapping Seb Menzhausen LBW for 3, it looked as though Lancashire would continue their dominance from the first innings.
However Notts opener Ben Compton (102*) was joined by Joey Evison (76*) and the pair batted unbeaten through two sessions to take the home side to the close at 219-1, trailing by 112 runs. Compton bringing up his century just before the close of play.
Lancashire will head into the final day at Lady Bay CC still confident of securing the victory that their dominance of the first two days deserves.
Day 2
Nottinghamshire's Second Eleven battled back in testing circumstances to finish 105/5 at Lady Bay on day two of the Second XI Championship opener against Lancashire.
Notts lost five early wickets in the evening session to leave themselves perilously positioned at 34/5, responding to Lancashire’s 490/7 declared, before some stout resistance from Dane Schadendorf (31*) and Matt Carter (34*) stemmed the flow.
The visitors got themselves into a strong position at 309/2 overnight on day one, but Joey Evison got the early breakthrough in the morning; that of George Bell in the ninth over, caught by Sol Budinger.
Wickets then came in pairs for the Green and Golds; two fell on the stroke of lunch to Tom Barber and Jack Hayes, both to catches, and two more to run outs in the afternoon session, Pettman the fielder to dismiss George Lavelle for a well-made 174, and wicketkeeper Schadendorf the architect for the dismissal of Jack Blatherwick.
Lancashire declared at tea after accumulating 56 for the eighth wicket, and it was Blatherwick who made the inroads into Notts’ top order in tandem with Liam Hurt.
The pair snared a handful of wickets inside 12 overs before the sixth wicket partnership worth 71 guided Nottinghamshire to the close of play.

Lancashire's Second XI dominated the second day of their Championship match away to Nottinghamshire.
The Red Rose second string resumed on 309-2 and George Lavelle continued to score runs freely following his unbeaten century on Day One.
He put on productive stands with George Bell (35), Jack Blatherwick (42) and Luke Young (38*) before he was eventually run out for 174 as Lancashire looked for quick runs ahead of a declaration. Lavelle batted for a total of 489 minutes, facing 357 balls, striking 18 fours and a six.
Young and Jack Morley (20*) added another 56 to the total before the declaration came at tea with Lancashire 490-7.
The evening session saw opening pair Liam Hurt (2/45) and Blatherwick (3/14) rip through the Notts top order, leaving them 34-5 with only opener Ben Compton (15) reaching double figures out of the home side's top five.
In the final hour Dane Schadendorf and Matt Carter fought back hard as Notts closed 105-5, still trailing by 385 runs with the Red Rose firmly in control heading into Day Three at Lady Bay CC.
Day 1
Notts not bothering with a streaming service from this one, unlike Middlesex in this round of Second Eleven Championship games. It remains to be seen if there's a camera there to record wickets (as with most other games).
An interesting encounter this game; Jack Blatherwick making an almost instant return to his former hunting ground and Notts looking to find replacements for the casualties from the first LV= Championship match.
Lancashire won the toss allowing Notts to audition their bowling options.
Trego and Chappell opening the bowling, with Evison, Barber and Pettman in the team as well.
100* (203) Taylor Cornall, 100* (169) George Lavelle

is it possible to get a reasonable view from outside that ground? In the park or maybe from the river footpath? Or is it too enclosed?
ReplyDelete......as Bruno Mars would sing. You will be able to get a restricted view of the action possibly from across the road, depending on the length of the bushes but obviously you will be standing for this delectable panoramic view. Staggering to think this comes under the same restrictions as the first team when it is exactly the equivalent of watching a game of recreational cricket on your local park, or attending matches in the NPL, in terms of spectators. Presumably the gates will be locked to stop anyone just meandering in and/or there will be sentry in position at the entrance from the road, to stop this happening.
ReplyDeleteThanks for the Middlesex tip. Will have a look later. I reckon you can see into boots from the approach up to lady bay bridge. Whether it’s sustainable to watch over a long period of time I don’t know, probably not.
ReplyDeleteYes, agree on both counts. Is this the new level of frustration we're now at after 18 months of not being able to attend games and we'll now settle for watching 20 mins outside the second team ground. And of course, with 2 1st team games and 2nd team games in quick succession it would be another unseasonal dry spell wouldn't it compared to how many early season washouts when we were able to attend games in the good olddays
DeleteI have now got the Middlesex v Kent second X1 games on.so I probably won’t go and look over the fence at lady bay,( today anyway). This weather set to continue till the end of April according to Paul Hudson on look north ( mind you his critics would say he’s usually wrong)
ReplyDeleteYes, noticed its from Merchant Taylor's school where astonishingly Middx are playing some vitality blast matches. And we think we're badly off ?
DeleteYes. Watched some of the Middlesex/ Yorkshire pre season from there. Gus Fraser said “ we are not allowed to play at lords during the 100 and test matches or build up “ they have invested in several high brid pitches there and at Radlett for use on multiple occasions. Thought the words “ not allowed “ were interesting and bordering on the sinister.
ReplyDeleteSome 'good' news it looks like from this Saturday (or the 12th but no fixtures since), we'll be able to attend Club matches in the NPL or whatever league we prefer. But still no county 2nds - I think the ECB's classification of county 2nds as elite is off the mark. And they get low attendance anyway, like a club match. I think National Counties will be permitted too, but am going to check.
ReplyDeleteWe’ve always known that Middlesex were the tenants at lords. But it looks to me that most county clubs are in truth similar and can be asked to vacate by chief executives or committees whether their members want it or not.
ReplyDeleteCounty cricket lovers up and down the country have got a choice to make ; do they want to watch cricket at out grounds or not? If so fine;if not tough.
