Essex LV= Championship at Trent Bridge Win Report

Day 4

LYNDON THE HERO

JAMES RIPS THE HEART OUT  OF ESSEX, INITIATING ANOTHER COLLAPSE, GIVING NOTTS A STORMING INNINGS WIN

It took Notts two hours to take the remaining seven Essex wickets to gain an emphatic innings and 30 runs victory over the current champions and storm to the top of the table!!!!

With the whole of the third day lost to rain, Notts as at Derby had rolled over the opposition in seven sessions. Like buses, two wins have come together, as Notts won at Trent Bridge for the first time in 1,098 days.Hero of the day was undoubtedly Lyndon James who followed up his dismissal of Cook on Friday, by taking three of the wickets to fall today to finish with a career best 4-51 and was denied a fifth wicket by a dropped catch by Hameed at slip. Crucially Browne was removed early by Fletcher who returned to take the last wicket to finish with 2-42 and eight in the match. Paterson chipped in with 3-41 as Essex lost their last seven wickets for 57 runs as Notts romped home.

Fletcher (Radcliffe Road End) and Broad (Pavilion End) opened the bowling. In Fletcher's third over of the morning, a superb ball saw him find the edge of Browne's (64) bat as Moores took the catch in front of first slip, 137 for 6. Paterson came on for Broad in the 69th over and ten Doeschate hit him to the ropes twice in his opening over. In the 72nd over, Lyndon James replaced Fletcher. In 74th over, ten Doeschate was plumb leg before to James for 21, 165 for five. Two balls later, a well pitched up ball from James removed Wheater's off stump, the wicket keeper out for a duck, 165 for six. Three overs later, Paterson had Harmer leg before for a 12 ball duck, 170 for seven. A good slip catch at second slip by Duckett saw James pick up his fourth wicket as Walter fell for 30, 174 for eight. Hameed dropped Siddle third ball, a sitter at third slip, James the unlucky bowler. The ninth wicket fell as Paterson had Siddle (6) caught at second slip by Duckett, 185 for nine. James took the new ball with Essex 190 for nine after 83.2 overs, but could not take his fifth wicket in the remaining four balls of the over. Fletcher immediately took over from James and with his second ball of a new spell had Porter (1) edging behind as Moores took his third catch of the innings. Snater was left unbeaten on 12 as Essex were all out for 194 on the stroke of the scheduled lunch (12:59). After three years of seeing Notts collapse the opposition had dramatically collapsed twice in the same game. How times can suddenly change!

Dane Paterson after a year out the game, has hit the ground running straight away and clearly has fitted well on and off the pitch with Broad being available and Fletcher bowling better than ever, Notts suddenly have a very strong bowling unit and the resultant change in fortunes is evident. Today’s hero was Lyndon James, it’s good to see local talent finally given and taking their chance, this is the way forward. Hopefully it won’t be long before Joey Evison will also get his chance to impress. MAG

Day 3

Officially washed out for the day.

Day 2

NOTTS TERMIN-SNATERED BY SEVEN-FER SHANE

But at stumps Notts had tied Essex down, still well in deficit .

Essex closed 95 runs behind Notts with seven second innings wickets standing at the end of a fascinating second day. Notts added 135 for the loss of seven wickets today being all out 20 minutes after lunch. Captain Steven Mullaney after a mixed start to 2021, batting very well for his 117 (160 balls. 20x4) and was well supported by Lyndon James 51 (off 94 balls – 8 x 4) and a swashbuckling 41 off 42 balls(6x1, 1x6) from Stuart Broad. Leading the way for Essex, who bowled much better today than in the latter stages of yesterday, was right arm medium pace Shane Snater with career best figures of 7-98 in his only his seventh first-class match. Essex with a huge deficit of 224 runs were largely indebted to the limpet like left hander Nick Browne with 60 not out off 184 balls. Browne, who scored 53 in the first innings and a 390 ball 163 in the corresponding fixture at Trent Bridge in 2019 was dropped in the slips when only 18. Notts bowled well in the 59 overs they had at Essex, but with the pitch losing pace and the ball not swinging as much as yesterday, batting conditions were considerably easier than yesterday morning.

Snater (Pavilion End ) and Siddle (Radcliffe Road End) opened the bowling on a sunny morning. Mullaney was dropped on 67 by Browne diving to his right in the gully off Snater. A single for James off Snater brought up the Notts 200 in the 58th over. James reached his 50 off 90 balls with a legside clip for two off Snater. In the same over, James (51 off 94 balls) was caught low down to his right by Harmer, 207 for 5 in the 60th over. The fifth wicket had added 123 runs 30 overs. Next ball, Moores edged Snater to keeper Wheater, to depart fora golden duck, the Zimbabwean's fifth wicket of the innings. Snater took a rest as Harmer came on for the next over the 68th over of the innings. In the 73rd over, Ryan ten Doeschate replaced Porter. In the 75th over Notts got to 250 as Mullaney got a single off ten Doeschate. Patterson-White (22) sweeping Harmer was caught by ten Doeschate at backward square leg, 253 for 7 in the 76th over. A fine leg boundary by Mullaney off Harmer got him to his ton off 148 balls, his first since his career best 179 v Warwickshire at Trent Bridge in September 2019. The new ball was taken by Siddle and Snater with Notts 280 for seven off 80 balls. Notts got to lunch on 296 for seven off 82 overs with Mullaney on 114 and Broad on 21. Notts were only to add 27 in the afternoon session.

Off the first ball after lunch, a streaky boundary from Broad off Siddle brought up the third batting bonus point for Notts. A single for Broad later in the same over brought up the 50 partnership in seven overs. Broad lofted Snater for six over mid wicket. Mullaney (117) lost his off stump as Siddle picked up his sole wicket of the innings, 319 for eight in the 85th over. The ninth wicket had added 66 runs in nine overs. Fletcher (2) was plumb leg before to Snater, 322 for nine. Broad’s (41) bright and breezy innings ended as Cook took a sharp catch at first slip as Snater picked up his seventh wicket for 98 runs.Paterson 1 not out. Notts 323 all out off 86 overs. Notts led by 224 runs after the first innings.

After two overs for 13 from the Pavilion End, Broad made way for Paterson. Fletcher bowled a five over spell from the Radcliffe Road End but was replaced by Broad who had switched ends. Essex were fighting back well, although Cook was riding his luck, the 50 coming up in the 14th over via a Cook boundary off Broad. James came on the following over and had Browne dropped on 18 by Hameed at third slip. James bowling round the wicket got the crucial breakthrough asCook was leg before for 35, 63 for one in the 19th over. Three overs later,Westley (1) edged Broad to Moores, 68 for two. Essex got to tea on 76 for 2 off 27 overs with Browne on 34 and Lawrence on 0.

With a poor forecast for Saturday Notts were hoping for further incisions into the Essex middle order but as conditions eased they had to settle for a solitary wicket. Fletcher (Radcliffe Road End) and Paterson (Pavilion End) came on immediately after tea. Lawrence (11) after surviving a couple of confident leg before shouts lost his off stump from a corker from Paterson, 89 for 3 after 35 overs. Essex battened down the hatches only adding a further 40 runs in the remaining 24 overs, but crucially not losing a wicket. In the 41st over James was reintroduced. Next over Broad replaced Fletcher as the Essex reached 100. The obdurate Browne reached his 50 from 147 balls with a single off Broad. In the 49th over, Patterson-White was given his first bowl of the contest. James immediately switched ends. With six overs remaining in the day Fletcher returned but a wicket was not forthcoming. Essex closed on 129 for three on 59 overs with Browne on 60 and Walter on 14.

With tomorrow’s forecast not good to say the least, Notts could well have only two further sessions to bowl Essex out and then a further session to knock off the runs. They will hope that overhead conditions will be more favourable whenever play resumes, the new ball which is only 21 overs away could prove crucial as the pace and bounce apparent on day 1 appears to be no longer there. MAG

Day 1

SPECIAL SIX-FER FLETCHER

Career Best Figures hurry out Essex as Notts End the Day Well on Top

A superb opening day for Notts as they lead Essex by 89 runs with six wickets standing. In ideal bowling conditions with the ball swinging, cloudy overhead and green top Notts were highly impressive with the ball as Essex were skittled for 99 having been 61-2 and 99-6. Leading the way was Luke Fletcher who followed his outstanding performance at Derby with a career best 6-24. Has he ever bowled better? Essex, initially, bowled skillfully in the reply as Notts slipped to 84-4, Hameed batting well, in difficult circumstances, for his 49 (6x4). James was joined by his captain and after being badly missed at slip when one, the youngster showed plenty of confidence and assertiveness in attacking Harmer and proving despite the initial set back he was not fazed by the situation, an excellent sign. With Essex bowlers flagging, Mullaney played a very attacking innings and these two have so far added 104 for the 5th wicket in 21.4 overs, to put the home side well on top.

Mullaney inserted Essex on a green pitch after a brief shower delayed the start for seven minutes. Notts were unchanged for the first time in 33 matches with the visitors’ strangely electing to omit leading bowler Sam Cook from their eleven. Broad (Pavilion End) and Fletcher (Radcliffe Road End) opened the bowling. Alastair Cook survived a confident leg before shout, Broad the bowler. But Broad got his revenge in his next over as Cook (3) edged to Moores, 23 for one in the ninth over. Paterson replaced Broad after a five over spell. An excellent burst from Fletcher was rewarded when he removed Westley's (1) off stump, 34 for two after 12 overs. Very much the champagne moment of the day from the Bulwell Bomber. Lawrence was dropped second ball on 0 by Hameed low to his left at third slip, Paterson the bowler. After nine overs where he took 1-13, Fletcher was replaced by the returning Broad. Lyndon James came on in the 23rd over. Lawrence (14) survived a leg before shout from James’ first ball but next ball James got his man with this time a successful leg before shout, 61 for three. Next over, a full delivery from Broad rapped onto Walter’s pads right in front, Walter out for a seven ball duck, 62 for four. Essex got to lunch on 71 for 4 off 27 overs with Browne on 39 and ten Doeschate on 5.

Fletcher and Paterson were bowling in tandem straight after lunch In the 32nd over a well pitched ball from Fletcher had ten Doeschate leg before for 6, 80 for five. Fletcher picked up his third victim as Wheater (5) was strangled down the leg side as Moores took the catch, 86 for six, Browne got to his 50 off 103 balls with a single off Fletcher. Rain stopped play at 1423 with Essex 97 for 6 off 37 overs with Browne on 51 and Harmer on 8.

Play restarted six minutes later as James came on for the 39th over. Little did we know the Essex innings was going to end so abruptly. Browne (53 from 112 balls – 9x4) fell to a good diving catch by Slater at backward point off Fletcher, 99 for seven in the 40th over. Three balls later, Fletcher went nap, another catch for Moores as Shane Snater went for a three ball duck, 99 for eight. Fletcher grabbed a career best and his 350th first-class wicket for Notts as Siddle went first ball, the fourth lbw of the innings, 99 for nine. A triple wicket maiden. Next over, Harmer (8) was leg before to James, Essex 99 all out off 41 overs. Porter 0 not out. Fletcher with outstanding figures of 16-7-24-6 was the standout and he was well supported by James (2 for 3) and Broad (2 for 31).

Porter (Radcliffe Road End) and Siddle (Pavilion End) opened the bowling. Hameed and Slater withstood the initial onslaught. Snater replaced Siddle in the tenth over. Snater coming round the wicket tucked Slater (14) up and he chipped the ball to Walter at mid wicket, 31 for one in the 12th over. Duckett departed for a golden duck caught by keeper Wheater off Porter, 34 for two. Rain stopped play at 1620 with Notts 55 for 2 off 19.1 overs with Hameed on 36 and Clarke on 4. Tea was immediately taken.

No play was lost as play resumed at 1640. It was to prove a very profitable session for Notts, despite two early setbacks. Clarke (15) who was trying to attack the bowling edged Snater to Wheater, 77 for three in the 26th over. James on one as dropped at third slip by Westley off Snater. Hameed (49 off 92 balls – 6x4), who was playing well, became the third victim for Snater as he edged the ball to Harmer at second slip, 84 for 4 in the 30th over. Back to back boundaries for James through mid wicket and third man off Snater saw Notts to 100 in the 34th over. Finally at 1753 spin appeared as Simon Harmer (5-1-19-0) had a twirl. James were very assertive against the South African going down the pitch to the off spinner the first 50 partnership of the day came up in 77 balls as Mullaney hit Porter to the ropes. The over went for 12 as Mullaney took advantage of Porter offering width outside off stump. An offside boundary by Mullaney off Harmer saw the 150 up in the 44th over. Snater returned for the 46th over and Mullaney hit him for two boundaries in the over.Successive boundaries for Mullaney off Snater saw him to 57 ball fifty, 13 off the over. Walter came on for the 50th over and a boundary for Mullaney brought up the 100 partnership in 117 balls. At 1855 rain stopped play with two overs to bowl. Notts 188 for four off 51 overs with Mullaney on 63 (69 balls – 12x4) and James on 42 (76 balls – 7x4). Their attacking stand broke the shackles that Essex had imposed in the first 30 overs and put Notts very much in the box seat. Despite Saturday’s promised washout, Notts should now fancy their chances of taking a major scalp. MAG

Arguably the strongest county in Group A - Essex. Certainly strong in their batting which includes Alastair Cook, Tom Westley and Dan Lawrence and their bowling attack contains the most attacking, skillful and successful spin bowler on the circuit - Simon Harmer. They also have Peter Siddle as a seam option.

Nottts however have shaken the limpet like monkey off their backs and shown glimpses of what can be achieved if more than a couple of players clicked at the same time.

The usual big question remains, is Stuart Broad available again? In an interview on Youtube conducted in what could have been mistaken for a padded cell, Captain Mull said that Stuart was keen to play much more matches this season before the Tests start. Let's hope he is, running in like it is Test Match - it's great to watch!

Home Win?

Having had 30 odd hours reflection on a resounding victory at Derby, breaking the win drought, we perhaps might want to reflect on the 19 home games that we've had without a victory now.

It would be nice, once spectators are back inside Trent Bridge as well, to be able watch the home side win for the first time since 7th May 2018, a 203 run win against Hampshire. Perhaps come the Worcestershire game, we might be on a winning run already.

Having the right formula to win at Trent Bridge might not be quite so straight-forward but at least this group of players have shown, in spectacular fashion, that they can win a match now.

  1. I was still in short trousers when I saw that May 2018 red ball victory! Now I am fully grown up and married with a mortgage
    ( Only joking)
Does anyone know if thats the longest run ( post war) of three and four days games at TB without a victory? It does seem an awful long time ago and the world - pre pandemic - was a different place then .
However based on the recent evidence its obvious Notts have turned the corner and its odds of 1000-1 that we never again witness a barren spell of over 1,000 days without a red ball win.
Could MAG perhaps remind us all of the Notts team that achieved that victory in 2018?

  2. The team that beat Hampshire by 203 runs at Trent Bridge on 7 May 2018 was Mullaney (capt), Libby, Nash, Ross Taylor, Patel, Wessels, Moores, Broad, Fletcher, Ball and Gurney

That 2018 victorious team contained some quality players .

  4. That last match v Essex, in 2019 is the only time, so far, I have seen Sir Chef play.

We got him out for 1, but Nick Browne got a century and their attack did the rest.

Hoping for a very different outcome this time.

  5. For the first time for some period, we have a real chance to beat the reigning Champions.

On the odd, rare occasion, correspondents on here have been critical of the management of our club.

But the signing of Dane seems inspired, long may this continue

  6. Given the Saturday forecast, it's effectively a 3 day match and we need to play sufficiently positively if we are to get the win here

  7. Every supporter of 17 counties will be a Notts fan today.

Always said Peter Moores was a good ‘un , he lied

  8. Draw still the favourite given the weather, but Mullaney's innings gives us some hope. A quick 100 in the morning and get Essex back in?

    ReplyDelete
  9. I think Notts will be bowling tomorrow whichever way they approach this innings, which is no bad thing. A handy lead of 150-200 would be ideal with at least a session at Essex tomorrow afternoon.

    ReplyDelete
  10. Its quite obvious the 4 day win last week for Notts has done the trick. Now playing with fire and real purpose. If we can beat top team Essex ( weather permitting) then Notts CCC supporters can look forward to the rest of the season
One Swallow doesnt make a summer but the signs are positive at last .
Well done to 100% trier Fletch . To be honest I thought his best days were behind him . So pleased to be proven wrong.

  12. CRUET KING - agree but don't think the win is weather permitting, it is tactical ability permitting. We know it's a 3 day match. Batting past lunch today is just accepting a draw??

  13. poor start today - slow scoring, key wickets falling - might as well declare now and get them in!

  15. Been in the garden most of today but listening to the Notts commentary via my phone . Bracey- Girdle and fellow commentator Don Topley have been pretty interesting to listen . As a former player Don has certainly been around and has great recollection and stories to tell about players past and present. Everyone is saying the third day will be a washout. Will the weather stop a victory for Notts I wonder? Could be a cracking last day!

  16. It’s raining folks, and it looks set in.

Yes , I’ve enjoyed toppers’ stories too.

  17. A bit of a change round! Many times in the past 3 years Notts have prayed for rain on the 3rd or 4 th day to save them from defeat.
This time its Essex turn to thank the heavens . Essex are a strong batting side but the match stats today would suggest a Notts victory without a wash- out today .
Lets hope for better things tomorrow as there is everything to play for . A couple of quick Essex wickets in the morning and then who knows?
Its early days but Notts seem a different side to last year. Perhaps we can now expect them to WIN 4 day matches and not expect to LOSE them ?
Anyone know if the match starting 20th May at TB is a “sell out”?
By sell out I mean the 4,000 capacity has been reached on the various days.
How many paid up Members do Notts have up to now this season ?

  19. Wow!
Notts wrap it up before lunch.
    Superb all round performance
    Well done the Notts bowlers
Lyndon James is lovely to watch bowling . A potential fine all rounder for Notts in years to come.
What a turn round for the Notts lads. What a great shame none of us could have witnessed it on the ground itself.

    ReplyDelete
  20. Excellent performance. I really did think we had left too much to do - but they managed it. I agree with CRUETKING that it is a shame people weren't there to witness 2 wins in a row. It's an outdoor stadium - struggle to see any justification for the continued restrictions. Notts doing well in CC now, although the Warks loss from a familiar winning position may come back to bite us in terms of getting into the top league in the final stage of season, and staging any serious challenge for the title

    ReplyDelete
  21. Yes a great result this, and a massive confidence boost for the team, and especially Lyndon James, who by rights should have had at least 5 wickets in this innings.

When Ball and Hutton rejoin the ranks, from injury, and with the reinvigorated Luke Fletcher, and the addition of Paterson ,Notts look to have a seam bowling unit to match any team in the country.

Both James and Patterson White have both proved their worth to the team, so far this season, and will learn and develop with each game.

They say, you should never change a winning side, but Broad may not be available to play Worcester.

If the management thought outside the box, now would be a good time to play Evison, another developing all-rounder,being drafted into a winning team. He deserves to be selected, ahead of Duckett, who apart from scoring some easy runs against a benevolent Derbyshire attack, has struggled in too many games, to warrant another inclusion in the starting eleven.

But anyway, that is for others to decide.

There will no doubt be an air of optimism both from the stands, and on the pitch, when the membership rejoin the players at Trent Bridge, a week on Thursday.

Keep it up Notts, and a job well done today.

  22. Notts have an embarrassment of riches in the bowling dept when they are all fit at the same time. Tricky one for Peter Moores but a problem he will be pleased to have. Who is now the first name on the team sheet ?
    Fletch ?
    Young James ?
    Confidence breeds confidence
Lets hope the lads can turn it on for the cricket starved spectators who attend TB on May 20 th.

  23. Well! That, especially this morning and Mullaney and James' partnership, and I have not said this for a very long time, was Championship form.

Mind you the last time, and probably the only time in the past seven or eight years, I did say that was almost certainly when we beat Essex (also then County Champions, very strong and on their pitch) at Chelmsford in 2018. We know what that led to. Hopefully this form will be sustained.

    Come on Notts.

  24. Well I am happy with that

  25. Well done Notts. I’m pleased for all you fans and always great to see Essex lose.

  26. After all this time , how nice it is to read positive comments about the last two Notts ccc games.
Would have been an uplifting experience to have been in the Notts dressing room yesterday at lunch time. Quite a few players finding form AT THE SAME TIME. That has been missing in the previous months.
Looking forward to seeing how the white ball team perform later on and how the TB ground will cope with the covid restrictions.
Up to 21st June the 25% max capacity (4,000) will apply
But what will the capacity be after that for the Blast 20 evening thrillers?

    ReplyDelete
  27. you'd hope full capacity after 21 June?

    ReplyDelete
  28. Max - after all this time of distancing and social restrictions will folk be happy to be jam packed together virtually overnight come 21st June ?
The Blast 20 matches can attract max ground capacity as we all know. A lot of the 20+ age group who attend may not have had their first jab by 21st June. A staggered increase in ground attendance would seem the most likely option ?
We shall see - perhaps I,m wrong and the fans will be quite happy to sit packed together?

    ReplyDelete
  29. Cannot let a superb win by Notts go by without adding my congratulations to a good team performance Outstanding contributions by Fletch, James and Mull stand out but it was the all round team effort that caught the eye.

In fact the only downside is that Notts have a week off now just when they were playing so well, In the past we would have perhaps been thankful for the break from the run of losses and draws, That is so much not the case now 😀
