Derbyshire Falcons Vitality T20 Blast at Trent Bridge Win

RECORD-BREAKING SAMIT PATEL DELIGHTS ON A DAMP NIGHT

Man of the Match Samit Patel was very much the hero of this truncated contest against local rivals Derbyshire. After scoring an assured 64 not out off 32 balls (6x4,3x6) to help Notts recover from 19-3 to 152-6, he returned with the ball 2-14 in 3 overs despite bowling with a wet ball. Notts got home by the slender margin of 2 runs after Derbyshire raced to 82-2 in the 7th over. Patel also became the 6th man, and the first Englishman to achieve the milestone of 5,000 T20 runs and 250 wickets.

Persistent

After persistent rain between 0900 and 1700 it was a surprise that a 15-over contest was possible, full credit to umpires for Nick Cook and Neil Pratt for getting the contest going. The night was cool and dank throughout and very light rain was falling throughout most of the Notts innings. As a result only 400 or so hardy souls braved the elements and watched the entertaining contest. Much better to be there rather than being bored rigid by the football or spending another three hours watching the live stream.

Budinger Debut

Play got under way at 1915. Derbyshire won the toss and elected to bowl. Sol Budinger made his first team debut as Peter Trego was omitted from the final eleven. Logan van Beek (Pavilion End) removed Hales (0)leg before off the second legitimate ball after a single for Clarke and a wide. Budinger hit his first ball to the cover boundary. Clarke (3) fell off the last ball of the over, Godleman catching him running back from mid off, 9 for2. Budinger on 4 was dropped at mid off by Reece off McKerr, four off the over. Budinger fell for 8 skying van Beek behind the wicket on the leg side, keeper Brooke Guest taking the catch, 19 for 3 after 2.4 overs. Notts were in a spot of bother. Duckett hit the next ball to backward point boundary. Duckett hit McKerr for successive boundaries through mid wicket and square leg, 12 off the third over. Duckett hit van Beek to the square leg ropes. Notts 40 for three after 4.3 overs which was the end of the truncated power play.

van Beek bowls out

Van Beek (3-22) conceded eight runs in his third over. Moores (4) flicked Scrimshaw to Guest behind the stumps, 45 for 4. Scrimshaw conceded six runs off his first over. Duckett straight drove Hudson-Prentice for a straight four, seven off the over. Critchley went for three off the eighth over. Patel flicked Reece for a leg side four and then a couple of balls later to the extra cover ropes. Duckett hit his last ball for six over square leg for six, 18 off the over.

Patel in control

Patel top edged Scrimshaw for four behind the wicket and next ball drove him for a straight four. Duckett (38) was caught off a leading edge by Critchley at backward point off Scrimshaw, 87 for 5 off 9.4 overs. Duckett has batted well throughout this year’s competition, his game awareness improving. Mullaney lofted his first ball through backward point for 4. Mullaney then slogged a three, 16 off the Scrimshaw over. Mullaney thick edged a six off Hudson-Prentice to bring up the Notts 100 in the 11th over. Mullaney then hit a four through square leg, 13 plus a leg bye off the over. Patel hit Critchley for six over long on, then got a four through backward point, 15off the over, 123 for three off 12 overs. Patel hit Scrimshaw for four through point. Patel hit the next ball for six over square leg. Mullaney (21) was caught on the mid wicket ropes, the partnership had raised 47 off 18 balls. Patel got to 50 off 23 balls with a two off Scrimshaw, 14 off the over. Scrimshaw 3 for 36 off three overs. Patel straight drove McKerr for six. Fletcher was preferred to the more agile Harrison, who did not bat or bowl in the game, at number 8 and just four came off the last over bowled by Hudson-Prentice. Notts 152 for seven off 15 overs with Patel on 64 not out and Fletcher on 3 not out. Patel’s innings was outstanding as he faced 32 balls with 5 fours and 3 sixes. This was not as a result of slogging but skill and placement. Write him off at your peril! Notts had made a competitive total.

The rain stops

The light rain stopped at the interval and never returned. Carter bowled the first over from the Pavilion End , Reece straight drove him for four and then five wides down the leg side followed. Reece then hit Carter for six over mid wicket, 19 off the over including a leg bye. Harry Came(2) was caught by Budinger at short third man off Ball's first delivery, 19 for one. Came formerly of Hampshire has a good cricketing pedigree being great grandson of RWV Robins formerly of Middlesex and England and most importantly [in the eyes of some perhaps]being a former Nottingham Forest player making two League appearances for the team in red in 1929 and 1930; both on Christmas Days, those were the days!. Godleman fell first ball to a catch at mid on by Hales. Reece got a single off Ball’s hat trick delivery. Five off the over. Fletcher went for 18 in the fourth over, Reece pulling him for six over backward square leg, hitting a four through the covers, followed by a four over square leg., then a scooped four through fine leg. Reece hooked Ball for six over square leg and then a straight six over long on, 16 off the over. Carter bowled the fifth over as Derbyshire reached 61 for two at the end of the power play. Carter conceding seven off the fifth over.

Turning point

Patel went for six off over six. Reece got to his 50 off 24 balls with a lofted four just off Patel head at extra cover. Reece hit a four through point off the next ball. Derbyshire were now 19 ahead of the DLS par score. Reece (56) gave it away as Hales caught him at wide long on off Mullaney, 82 for three off 7 overs. With Critchley on 0 Moores fluffed a stumping chance off Patel. Next ball Patel had his man as Critchley leg before, 84 for four off 7.3 overs. His 250 T20 wicket and a key wicket for Notts. Five off the eighth over including two byes. Mullaney went for five off the ninth over.Patel bowled Hudson-Prentice (6) off stump., 95 for 5 off 9.4 overs. Patel3-0-14-2, just five off his third over. Mullaney (3-0-20-1) conceded five off the 11th over as Notts were now marginally ahead based on DLS.

Du Plooy feasts on Fletcher

Du Plooy hit the returning Fletcher for four over long on. Du Plooy then hit Fletcher for a straight six, 16 off the over. Derby 118 for five off 12 overs. Patel at short fine leg and diving forward caught Guest (6) off Carter (3-0-30-1). Derby 122 for 6. Derby needed 29 off two overs. Thomson hit Ball for 6 over square leg off Ball's first delivery, but Ball (3-0-30-2) recovered his composure and conceded three off the remaining five balls of the over. Derby needed 20 off the last over bowled by Fletcher, Thomson got a leg bye off the first ball. Du Plooy hit Fletcher for four through long on. Du Plooy then got a single.Thomson then got a leg bye. Thirteen required off the last two balls.

Fletcher serves-up his four-ball, when Derby need a six

Du Plooy hit a four through mid wicket to bring up his 50. The contest was over; Leus Du Plooy hit the final ball for six over square leg to finish with 58 off 35 balls(3x4, 3x6), Derby 150 for 6 off 20 overs, Notts winning by 2 runs; their experience saw them over the line as Derbyshire continue to be handicapped without the injured Madsen. Fletcher who has played every game this season looked a bit jaded on the night and went for 49 off his three overs.

Extra point gained over rivals

With the rest of the games in the Notts group washed out, Notts had gained a crucial extra point and remain fourth in the table. They are batting well, concern still remains about the side’s ability to limit runs in power play and at the death as the team bowling unit struggles for consistency. MAG

Having tormented Falcon's seconds with a 31 ball century, will Budinger be given a chance to show what he can do with a yellow shirt on? The last weather forecast I have seen has a 60% chance of rain at game time.

  1. looks no hope of a game - it seems we regularly have the Derbys home game washed out (did last year didn't we?) and it may cost us in a tight group as it's one of easiest games. Allocating points based on table position or a seeding would be fairer than just shared surely in a way that takes no account of expected result

  2. Great shame if its called off. A local Derby and all it entails . The best hope would appear to be a reduced over slog.

  3. We have managed to coincide our next 2 games with the England euro matches. I love both of our national sports. Should have been avoided.

  4. does anyone else think this bad weather may actually work in our favour, as a home QF may not be in our best interests? Quite a few examples of under-performing in home knockouts, including last year's tied QF at home to Leicestershire (winning on wickets!). As long as we don't have to go to Taunton!

    1. You could play with statistics and results and say that so far we haven't won at Colin's Fortress Trent Bridge but remain unbeaten on the road. LOL

  5. Incredible they have started after so much rain , and as above, it was forecast to get worse.

Is it a Sky match ?
They seem to insist on play.

  6. good win - only north group match to be on. Concerns over Fletcher's economy rate persist though.

    1. Bowling in the power play is a big concern

    2. I think Jake is 85% back but Fletch is a real concern or even a liability, unfortunately. No Gurney or Christian or Luke Wood now to stand-up at the death or the powerplay, when Plan A goes for a Burton. It's great that Samit has now arrived!

  7. I apologise to Samit
What a class act he still is .
I and others on here wanted him dropped.
They would have lost tonight without him
.Its hard to believe the game was actually played after all that rain and the evening forecast
A massive thank you to the Notts groundstaff.
Also well done to Dave Bracey - a good entertaining commentary and regular radio summing up - done without any help from a fellow commentator.
A drab , cool , wet night brightened up with some good cricket from both sides

Notts grabbed the chance to win but,

Should umpires have gone ahead with match ?
11 degrees, outfield must have been saturated, 7 1/2 hours rain to 6ish

Members pay a lot of money to watch , with my health condition, I feel excluded by it taking place in those conditions

    ReplyDelete
  9. Richard - of course they should have played the match last night!
Why on earth wouldnt they if the Umpires were happy with the prevailing conditions ?
Its always far better for points to be awarded on the field of play as opposed to being dished out for non play in the dressing room .
Times have changed since the Dickie Bird days of stopping a match through a single drop of rain falling or a dark cloud appearing -and rightly so .

  10. You are right, and I am wrong.

    But emotionally I feel. cheated

Like everyone, starved of cricket for so long. Last winter I only just survived emergency cancer operation.

To my delight I get to see cricket again. But rain yesterday , oh dear must be off. Then they play in Conditions which for 56 years of watching cricket would have meant game off.

But I cannot go as I am too ill to sit in 11 degrees and rain.

    Imagine what that feels like

  11. Rich - I know how you feel ! Years ago I would have been down at TB last night shivering with the other hardy souls but still glad to be there.
But old age and physical condition plays a big part in decisions about watching cricket for long periods in adverse conditions .
I wasnt there last night but I was so pleased for those that made the effort to be there
Lets face it- playing cricket seemed a forlorn hope practically all day . Even now its hard to believe they got a 30 over match played . As MAG says - full marks to the Umpires for starting the game even though light drizzle was falling. R

    1. When the world goes back to normal, perhaps Lisa will follow-up on what she told members back in 2019, opening-up the Randall Suite for members to watch cricket from, especially during those chilly days early and late season.

  13. Yes I had forgotten about that suggestion of letting Members use the Randall Suite to get some warmth and shelter during cold and wet periods. I suppose the covid situation put paid to its possible use . But its certainly something for the future seasons . I know Members can use the Pavilion ( in normal times) but the view is awful and the atmosphere not very inviting.
