Day 3
FIVE-STAR FLETCHER STRIKES AGAIN
Notts win by an innings and 36 runs
Notts beat a bedraggled and bewildered Derbyshire by an innings and 36 runs at 16:57 today. It was a day of surprises.- Apart from a 17 minute hold up in the morning the predicted rain stayed away allowing the game to be completed well inside three days.
- With England falling foul of the Covid regulations, Duckett and Ball got to the call up to the England ODI squad which meant Duckett 69 not out overnight was pulled out the game and in came 18 year-old Dane Schadendorf for his first-class debut.
Luke Fletcher then took centre stage with innings figures of 5-28 and a match analysis 8-64 as Derbyshire subsided to 122 all out off 46.4 overs; an inept performance. The Peakites lost their last six wickets for 22 runs in 59 balls as they gave up the ghost after tea with Notts seam quintet once again bowling well and getting the ball to swing.
Hudson-Prentice and Cohen opened the bowling with Schadendorf looking calm at the wicket. After 2 overs, Cohen was replaced by Critchley from the Radcliffe Road End. The new ball was taken with Notts 280 for 7 after 80 overs. With the ninth delivery with the new ball, Hutton (23)was lbw to Hudson-Prentice, 283 for 8. Rain stopped play at 1145 with Notts 284 for 8 off 82.1 overs with Schadendorf on 19 and Fletcher on 0.
Play resumed 12:02 with 4 overs lost; Notts gained their third batting point in the 86th over. Two overs later, Fletcher (14) was caught at backward point by du Plooy off Aitchison, 305 for 9. Schadendorf's promising innings came to end when he was bowled by Reece on 24, 307 all out. The last dismissal was the only one of the ten taken from the Pavilion End. Hudson-Prentice was the star performer with 5 for 68. Notts led by 158 runs on first innings.
Fletcher (Pavilion End) and Hutton (Radcliffe Road End) opened the bowling. On the stroke of lunch, Tom Wood (3) edged Fletcher to Compton at first slip, 13 for 1 off 7 overs at the interval.
Immediately after lunch, Paterson replaced Hutton from the Pavilion End.After a 7 over spell Fletcher made way for the returning Hutton who got a ball to shoot up and found edge of Guest's (18) bat, Schadendorf taking the catch,35 for two after 15 overs. In the 22nd over, Paterson removed du Plooy's off stump in spectacular fashion, 46 for 3. In his next over, Paterson trapped Reece leg before to ball that jagged back for 21, 55 for 4. This proved the last over of Paterson’s spell, Evison replaced Paterson and Critchley hit three boundaries in his opening over. James replaced Hutton in the 33rd over from the Radcliffe Road End. Hosein was riding his luck, playing and missing numerous times and inside and outside edging the ball, somehow he survived. A cover drive by Hosein off James brought up the Derbyshire 100 in the 37th over. Critchley (36) fell to the last delivery before tea caught by Schadendorf off Evison, 100 for 5 off 38 overs; Hosein 17 not out. This was the start of a dramatic collapse. The fifth stand with Hosein had added 45.
Fletcher returned from the Radcliffe Road End after the interval and he had Hudson-Prentice (9) strangled down the leg side as Schadendorf took his third catch of the innings, 115 for 6 in the 43rd over. Probably Fletcher’s worst ball of the match! Paterson replaced Evison in the following over.Thomson (2) fell to an excellent catch by Hutton low down at second slip as Fletcher got wickets in consecutive overs, 121 for 7. Cohen fell next over leg before to Paterson for a duck, 122 for 8. Fletcher picked up his 4th wicket with Hosein leg before to 28, 122 for 9. Two balls later Scrimshaw was caught behind for a duck. Derbyshire 122 all out off 46.4 overs with 33.2 overs remaining on Day 3. The end of come much quicker than anybody would have expected.
Fletcher’s outstanding form continues; he is now the leading wicket-taker in the country with 46 wickets @12.43 including four five wicket hauls. Paterson with 3-22 in the second innings has 29 wickets @22.31.
Notts are now top of the Group 1 table, with Durham game next week being critical, Broad will surely play up in the North East.MAG
** As a follow-up to my report, the last championship game that we did not concede a bye was Essex at Trent Bridge in September 2018 MAG
ENGLAND TORPEDO STRIKES
England have decided that the show must go on when they found that three members of the current One Day squad were carrying the damned virus and so the rest of the squad have been consigned into isolation. A new squad have been drafted, removing a key component from Notts' game plan in this game, Ben Duckett and a key component in the Outlaws side due to play on Friday against top of the table rivals, Yorkshire, in Jake Ball.
As a result, this morning Dane Schdendorf has been parachuted in from Lady Bay to make his debut and fulfill keeping duties, but starts the day with bat in hand.
Day 2
TWO HALF-CENTURIONS GIVE NOTTS POSITION OF STRENGTHNotts finished the second day in a position of strength leading 107 runs with 3 first innings wickets standing. Derbyshire’s timid innings ended on 149 all out after lunch was delayed, with Derby 9 wickets down at 1310. Top scorers were Leus de Plooy and Fynn Hudson Prentice who both scored 30 in contrasting styles the former taking 146 balls and the latter 53 balls. Derbyshire were on the whole entrenched, facing 79.1 overs as all the Notts seamers bowled well and kept it tight on a wicket which offered the bowlers some assistance throughout. Derbyshire’s bowling pack, offered more pace than their Notts counterparts, and both Hudson-Prentice and the small, stocky left-armer Michael Cohen proved a handful. In fact, all seven wickets fell to bowlers bowling from the Radcliffe Road End; six to catches behind the wicket, either to the keeper or the slip cordon. Slater and Compton fell to successive balls from Hudson-Prentice. Slater being the sole Notts batsman to fall to a loose shot. Hameed batted excellently for his 57 (112 balls, 8x4), putting the bad ball away and added 78 in 25 overs with Mullaney (42), they both fell in Hudson-Prentice’s second spell. Duckett and James then added 61, with James (33)batting assertively until falling to a slip catch off Cohen, who proved too fast for Patterson-White. Evison batted confidently for his 19. Duckett followed his good performance behind the stumps with a confident unbeaten 69 (off 81 balls, 10x4), the best innings of the match. Duckett to me is now batting at his correct place in the batting order, namely number 6. The team having more balance and the addition of Evison more solid in the middle lower order.
Fletcher and Evison opened up first thing. Hudson-Prentice tucked into Evison, who conceded 18 runs from his 3 overs from the Pavilion End. He was then replaced by Dane Paterson. Hudson-Prentice (30) gave it away driving Paterson straight to Patterson-White at extra cover, 117 for 6 in the 58th over. The becalmed du Plooy (30 off 146 balls) edged Fletcher to Duckett behind the stumps, 117 for 7. After a frugal 9 overs spell from Fletcher, Hutton came on from the Radcliffe Road End. Cohen was dropped on 0 by Hameed at third slip off Paterson. It took until the 8th over of his morning spell before Paterson conceded a run, as Cohen cover drove him for three. Paterson struck for a second time as Thomson was leg before for 6, 127 for 8. Twenty minutes before the scheduled lunch, Evison returned following an eleven over spell for Paterson. Cohen (10) was caught behind by Duckett off Hutton, 143 for 9. With lunch delayed, Aitchison (15) was last man out caught at deep square leg by Slater off Evison, Derbyshire 149 all out at 1314. Fletcher 3 for 36 the pick of good all-round bowling display.
Cohen (PavilionEnd) and Hudson-Prentice (Radcliffe Road End) opened the bowling as the sun started to appear more regularly. Hameed played a number of pleasing drives. Slater (7) pulled a short ball from Hudson-Prentice straight to Reece at mid on. Next ball, Compton hanging his bat out to dry was caught at third slip by Thomson, 25 for 2. Mullaney survived the hat-trick ball. Reece came on from the Pavilion End in the 13th over and was followed next over by Ben Aitchison. Notts 50 came up in the 23rd over. Two overs later, Scrimshaw replaced Reece and Mullaney hit him for two boundaries in his opening over. The 50 partnership between Hameed and Mullaney was achieved in 117 balls. Hudson-Prentice returned for the 28th over. Scrimshaw, bowling too short, conceded 15 off his two overs,so the captain brought himself on. At tea, Notts 94 for two off 31 overs with Hameed on 45 and Mullaney on 36.
It became increasingly cloudy after tea. The 100 came up in the 34th over via a boundary for Mullaney off Hudson-Prentice. Later in the same over, Mullaney (42) edged the former Sussex man to Aitchison at first slip, 103 for 3. Hameed got to an excellent 50 off 95 balls with a boundary through backward point off Hudson-Prentice.
Hudson-Prentice got one to lift and Hameed (57) edged to keeper Hosein, 122 for 4 after 40 overs. Notts took the lead in the 46th over as James got a two off Reece who had replaced Hudson-Prentice from the Radcliffe Road End. Off-spinner Alex Thomson came on in the following over for a 4 over spell. Duckett added impetus to the innings and the 50 partnership between himself and James took 60 balls. Cohen got the fifth wicket as James (33) edged him to Critchley at second slip, 183 for 5. James had looked solid up to this point, and the wicket was somewhat of a surprise. The fifth partnership had added 61 runs. Cohen beat Patterson-White for pace. He played and missed at his first two balls and then edged the left armer to Aitchison at first slip, who took the catch at the second attempt, Patterson-White out for a three ball duck, 183 for 6. Hudson-Prentice returned from the Pavilion End with the floodlights now on. Duckett found the point ropes to bring up the Notts 200 in the 60th over. In the 63rd over, Scrimshaw replaced Hudson-Prentice. Duckett reached his 50 off 61 balls with a single off Aitchison who had taken over from Cohen at the Radcliffe Road End. Evison (19)edged Aitchison to Hosein behind the wicket, 223 for seven in the 66th over. Scrimshaw proved expensive once more so Critchley brought himself on. Successive boundaries for Duckett off Critchley brought up the Notts 250. Stumps were drawn at 1918 with Notts 256 for 7 off 71 overs with Duckett on 69 and Hutton on 14.
Notts, already with a commanding lead, will be looking to get to 300 and bowl Derbyshire out once more. Tomorrow’s forecast is decidedly mixed so Notts were undoubtedly right to go for brisk runs after tea today. MAG
Notts had the better of a truncated first day at Trent Bridge which was interrupted by showers in front of a crowd of around 800 hardy souls.
Notts won the toss and inserted Derbyshire on a greenish pitch to the Bridgford Road side of the square. Harrison and Chappell were left out of the final eleven with Joey Evison making his first appearance of the season. The visitors were captained by Matt Critchley and were severely handicapped without either Madsen or Godleman.
Fletcher (RadcliffeRoad End) and Hutton (Pavilion End) opened the bowling but rain stopped play at 1110 with Derby 7 for 0 off 2.5 overs. Play resumed 7 minutes later. Rain stopped play once again at 1132 with Derby 16 for 0 off 6.5 overs with Reece on 6 and Wood on 6.
After a delay of 16 minutes play recommenced. Reece was caught behind by Duckett off Fletcher for 6, 16 for one in the 9th over. In the 12th over, Hutton had Wood leg before to a well pitched up delivery for 9, 20 for 2. Both opening bowlers bowled with immaculate line and length. Hutton (8-4-10-1) took his sweater and Paterson replaced him from the Pavilion End for the 18th over. Next over, James replaced Fletcher (9-4-10-1). Guest and du Plooy were happy to survive. But Guest’s (7)45-ball vigil ended as he was caught by keeper Duckett edging an attempted drive in James’ 3rd over, 40 for 3 in the 23rd over. Derbyshire got to lunch at 1300 on 44 for 3 off 24 overs with du Plooy on 10 and Critchley on 2. Paterson(4-1-7-0) did not bowl for rest of the day.
James and Hutton bowled in tandem immediately after lunch. In the 32nd over, Duckett diving to his left dropped du Plooy in front of first slip, Hutton the bowler. Fletcher returned for the 35th over. Three overs later, Evison came on from the Pavilion End but at the end of his first over rain stopped play at 1435 with Derby74 for 3 off 38 overs with du Plooy on 20 and Critchley on 22.
Despite some dry spells the rain was never far away and there was the odd heavier burst. After 160 minutes of inaction, play resumed at 1715 with 23 overs remaining. Notts though took two crucial wickets during the 38 minute segment. Fletcher and Evison shared the bowling duties. Off the 11th ball of the resumption,Critchley (23) edged Evison to Hameed who took the chance at third slip, 75 for four. Six balls later, Hosein (0) was plumb leg before to Fletcher, 76 for 5.After bowling a four over spell, all of which were maidens, Evison took a rest as Hutton returned. Bad light stopped play at 1753 with Derbyshire 91 for 5 off 47 overs with du Plooy on 21 and Hudson-Prentice on 13. Play was called off for good at 1815.
A frustrating day as the Notts five seamers, despite bowling with a wet ball, bowled well,Fletcher 16-6.-28-2 being the stand out. Fletcher now has 40 wickets, the joint top wicket taker in the championship with Chris Rushworth. MAG

Deleteperhaps not
DeleteNo we won't!
ReplyDeleteYes lets get young Harrison on a decent two/ three year contract asap .
ReplyDeleteBefore some other Club realises his potential and makes him an offer he cant refuse .

Hope DOC and PM soon get pen to paper with him . This week preferably!?
Leicestershire club statement
ReplyDelete03 July 2021
Leicestershire County Cricket Club can confirm that seven players will miss the LV=County Championship game against Somerset due to COVID-19 protocols.
Hassan Azad, Sam Evans, Alex Evans, Louis Kimber, Dieter Klein, George Rhodes and Chris Wright are self-isolating.
No other close contacts within the playing group or backroom staff have been identified. The rest of the playing squad and backroom staff have conducted tests, which have returned negative results.
Hope all these guys and contacts will be OK.
ReplyDeleteRe today, one of those deeply frustrating days when it is on/off.
Umpires and groundstaff superb and Notts bowling and fielding spot on.
Rain interrupted as we know and were I think expecting.think “ they’ve given out “ better weather tomorrow
ReplyDeleteHighly fascinating day and great from Notts.
ReplyDeleteSchadendorf in - I thought concussion sub? But apparently it's England call up.
ReplyDeleteIt’s a right to do with the whole England squad stood down and a new one selected, but still NO Alex Hales.ive long thought and said on here we are not been told the whole story with Alex Hales, it’s time someone came clean
ReplyDeleteinteresting, thanks for saying. Dependent if Clarke and Budinger are free to play on Friday, it could be a challenging side to pick for the Friday Blast game! Moores, Duckett, Clarke, Budinger can all keep wicket - but if none available, then would need to bring in Schadendorf, which would impact the balance of the side. But then, Samit could bat at 4 if needed I expect.
ReplyDeleteDelta Farce
ReplyDeleteand still no Alex!
Fletch et al have blown derbys away!! Wow
ReplyDeleteDerby wickets fell like dominoes after Critchley departed.
ReplyDeleteA game of only 214.3 overs
ReplyDeleteHow quickly situations can change in sport.
ReplyDeleteLast season when Derby won at Trent Bridge, they appeared to be a team in the ascendancy and Notts a team in decline.
Notts are starting to reap the rewards of playing their younger players, mixed in with a few seasoned pro's.
It has taken a long while for the penny to drop, but let us hope that the days of Mr Newell only considering that a player was good enough for the first team,as long as they had played for another county, are now behind us.
The likes of Evison, James, Patterson White,Schadendorf and hopefully Harrison, if they sign him before someone else secures his signature, are the future for Notts county cricket.
Long may that continue.
Happy days indeed fir Notts and their fans . A lot to look forward to , especially with the tedious ground restrictions being removed . But no more 4 day cricket at Trent Bridge for EIGHT WEEKS ! Complete madness?
ReplyDeleteWhat a transformation by Notts from a season or two past . They are playing inspired cricket and the fit , new young eager faces have made a difference. It proves again you have to bring in new blood when a team loses over and over again . The Notts management must regret not giving the likes of James , Evison , Budinger a chance before. Any news on a long term contract for young Harrison . Dont want to get carried away after a handful of games for Notts but he does look a player with great potential . Come on Doc and PM - get the pen out!!
So happy I an dancing, if carefully due to health reasons !
ReplyDeleteagree. Long gap till next phase could go either way. What sort of team would we expect for Friday night against an equally (or even more) depleted Yorkshire? Presuming Moores, Clarke and Budinger aren't ready to return - expect it will be too soon? And knowing Duckett and Ball are away, then what about:
ReplyDelete1. Hales, 2. Slater, 3. Trego, 4. Patel, 5. Mullaney, 6. James, 7. Schadendorf+, 8. Fletcher, 9. Carter, 10. Harrison, 11. Paterson (knowing Harrison usually carded at 10 but often comes in 8 or 9).
Or if we want stronger batting could go Evison instead of Paterson, but not seen much evidence Evison is in first team contention.
If we don't want to open with Slater, who might do it? Mull? Schadendorf? Has been known to open for seconds and at club level but is different. For an out of the box idea, what about Harrison to open? Seems capable with bat, and keeps middle order strong
With the England one day squad being in a pickle then most Counties have been affected by various players being “ called up” out of the blue. So most Blast teams will have a strange look about them and Notts will be no exception . Its important we win on Friday so Notts may go for the best possible batting line up and hope to win with runs on the board.
ReplyDeleteOne observation about the 100 Ball Comp . The ECB must be pleased that nearly all Covid restrictions will be remived on 19 th July and the much-vaunted comp starting just afterwards. So there is now a potential for sell - out crowds . But will the demand be there . I notice that at Trent Bridge the ticket price for an adult to sit in a decent GOLD seat has risen to £30 ! As was mentioned before this will be a £100 night out for two adults after car parking , drinks purchased in the ground and ditto food. I fear the worst for this 100 Ball “ spectacle” However from the ECB point of view IT HAS TO SUCCEED, because of the huge investment already made
