CONDITIONS MEANT IT WAS AN IMPORTANT TOSS TO WIN, BUT MAGNIFICENT FLETCHER USES THEM TO CRUSH TIMID FOXES
Notts strolled to an easy seven wicket victory over Leicester Foxes at Welbeck today. An unchanged Notts won the toss and elected to bowl in ideal bowling conditions with an overcast sky and a dampish wicket. Luke Fletcher who bowled his 10 overs straight through from the Mansfield Road End was the chief destroyer taking 4 of the first 5 wickets to finish with figures of 10-2-30-4.
Off the last ball of the first over, Rishi Patel (6), who had scored a ton at Edgbaston 3 days previously, was caught at second slip by Montgomery off Fletcher, 7 for one. Brett Hutton was keeping a tight lid on the run scoring from the Charlie French (Scoreboard) End. In the fifth over,Swindells (4) played on to his leg stump, Fletcher the bowler, 10 for 2. Foxes' skipper Lewis Hill was dropped on 0 by Montgomery at second slip off Fletcher. In the 13th over, Aussie left-hander Harris (16) edged Fletcher to Schadendorf,33 for 3. Paterson replaced Hutton from the Scoreboard End and with his 4th ball had Rhodes (2) caught at second slip by Montgomery diving low to hisright, 36 for 4. In his eighth over, Fletcher had Lilley (4) caught behind by Schadendorf, 42 for 5. Kimber (7) was next to go, caught at first slip byHutton off Paterson, 53 for 6 in the 18th over. Evison replaced Fletcher afterhis fine spell, where the ball was consistently moving and lifting, for the 21st over. Schadendorf took his third catch when Hill (25) edged Paterson, 68 for 7in the 24th over.
The pitch though was now drying out and conditions became much easier tobat. The 8th wicket stand of 70 in 18 overs was very much made inNottingham. As Ben Mike (son of Greg) and 16 year old leg-spinning all-rounder Rehan Ahmed of Cavaliers and Carrington CC accumulated runs in a sensible manner.
Patterson-White replaced Paterson (8-1-25-3) for the 30th over and wasto a bowl a five over spell costing 19 runs. The Leicester 100 came up in the 33rd over bowled by Evison (7-1-27-0) which cost 12. Peter Trego came on from the Mansfield Road End in the 35th over. The 50 partnership from the Nottingham born pair took 12 overs. Hutton returned for the 40th over. Three wickets fellin 11 balls as the Leicester fight back was rapidly quashed. Ben Mike (34 off 62 balls) was caught at deep square leg by Slater, parrying the ball back into play before completing the catch off Hutton, 138 for 8 in the 42nd over. Barnes was leg before to Trego (5-0-19-1) for a golden duck, 140 for nine. Five balls later, Wright (2) was the last man to fall caught behind by Schadendorf off Hutton (8.1-2-22-2), 144 all out off 43.1 overs. The promising Ahmed was 35 not out off 69 balls. With a sluggish outfield, Leicester had found the ropes only 11 times.
Notts had what appeared a simple target and all three batsmen dismissed were out going for quick runs as 19 fours and three sixes were hit. Wright (Mansfield Road End) and Barnes (Scoreboard End). Budinger, in typical buccaneering fashion hit three fours but fell for 13 in 4th over; caught behind off Barnes, 14 for1. Ben Mike came on for the 9th over with Notts 39 for 1, his first over including boundaries for Slater and Trego. Chris Wright changed ends for the following over. Trego hit Wright for a six over square leg and off the last ball of an over costing 22, he hooked him for six over long leg. Trego, now going for everything, was dropped on 38 by Hill at long on off Ahmed who came on as Mike had switched ends. Two balls later, Trego was caught behind by Swindells off Ahmed for (39 off 31 balls, 3x4, 2x6), 95 for 2 in the 13th over. In the following over, Slater (38 off 38 balls – 6x4) going for a drive edged Mike to keeper Swindells, 97 for 3. James, after edging his first ball for two, added an unbroken 48 in 6.3 overs as Notts galloped home. A swept two by Montgomery off Ahmed brought up the Notts 100 in the 15th over. Montgomery hit Ahmed for three boundaries off four balls in the 16th over. Montgomery then hit Mike for two boundaries in the 20th over. James hit Ahmed to the cover boundary as Notts got home with 29.4 overs unused at 1602. Notts 145 for three off 20.2overs with Montgomery on 27 and James on 16. The toss had proved crucial and Notts and Luke Fletcher in particular had most full use of ideal bowling condition staking seven Leicester wickets in the opening 24 overs. The 1,000 or sospectators who were now bathing in the afternoon sunshine went home happy. MAG

After what happened at Welbeck a couple of days ago lets hope that those that make the effort to go again today actually see plenty of play and Notts win .August has arrived and its the start of the main holiday season for many .. But we expect more than 14C when sitting watching cricket for hours on end in an "outground" with few comforts and facilities.
ReplyDeleteWelbeck cricket club must be questioning if all the time , work and expense is actually worth it just to stage a couple of downgraded London Cup matches that now seem to carry little glory for the victors . As we know , Notts have lost 11-12 players to the 100 Comp , Test scene and Covid. But the side playing Leicester today still contains quality and a decent mixture of youth and experience. Looking on Notts CCC website its pretty alarming to see how FEW tickets have been sold so far for the Royal London final being staged at Trent Bridge ( on a Thursday!)
Its not what Lisa and Co expected when they announced the details and plans all those months ago !?
An excellent bowling performance from Notts today, although Leicestershire's batting was pitiful. Montgomery took an outstanding catch at slip, and Slater did well with his on the boundary. I was very impressed with Dale Schadendorf. He kept wicket impeccably. He looked like the real deal to me.
ReplyDeleteThank you to Welbeck for being so hospitable as ever.
ReplyDeleteA pleasing result all round today at Welbeck . Glad they had a proper match after the recent trials and tribulations. Anyone know what the attendance was today?
ReplyDeleteUnusual to see a bowler bowl 10 consecutive overs in a one day match . So well done to old faithful warrior Fletch. For those out of the loop , Trent Rockets lost their 100 ball match today against the Bears at Edgbaston. But again they got a fantastic amount if spectators - not a sell out - but looked close to it?
To be a sell out, wouldn't you have to sell the tickets and not just give them away? Asking for a friend
ReplyDeleteI'm told the streaming was rubbish today from Welbeck - smudge at one end and buffering and racing pictures at times - largely "unwatchable"
ReplyDeleteIt was largely unwatchable. Exactly as described above.some might scoff and say “you should of been there”;they’d be right on this occasion.
