Yorkshire Vikings Vitality T20 Blast at Trent Bridge Win

FIRST THE RAIN THEN IT'S HALES

Notts emphatically secure home quarter final in bite size win over Yorkshire

Notts secured a T20 home quarter-final by emphatically beating Yorkshire by 10 wickets with 20 balls to spare in a 7-over match in front of a Covid reduced full house at Trent Bridge last night.

Yorkshire won the toss and elected to bat with dark skies overhead. Moores and Paterson came into eleven for Duckett and Ball. Joe Clarke was still absent. Rain started to fall at 1825 and was persistent until stopping around 1945. After a somewhat prolonged mopping up operation, play finally got underway at 2045. Samit Patel bowled the first over from the Pavilion End and with the third ball Brook was stumped by Moores for a 2 ball duck, 1 for 1; four off the over. Thompson hit Carter's first ballto the backward point boundary. He was then dropped on 8 by Hales at wide mid on off Carter, 12 for one off two overs. Fletcher bowled the third over,Yorkshire 12 for 1 at 2.1 overs, the end of the power play. Lyth hit Fletcherfor six over mid wicket, 10 off the over.

Thompson edged Carter for 4. Lyth then hit Carter for 4 through point, 11 off the over. Patel conceded 3 off the fifth over to finish with 2-0-7-1 and another man of the match award. Fletcher bowled a poor sixth over. He started with a wide, then a straight six by Thompson. The next ball was also a wide. Lyth hit him for successive fours through backward point and square leg. Next ball was another wide; the final tally was 19 off the over.

Lyth (26) holed out to Mullaney at long on off Paterson's first ball, 55 for 2. Thompson (28) got two, and perished next ball caught by Patel at extra cover. Paterson finished with 2 for 5 off his solitary over. Yorkshire 60 for 3 off 7 overs, Waite 3 not out and Northeast 0 not out. It did not look enough.

Notts innings only lasted 22 balls as they made mincemeat of the Tykes score. Trego swept the first ball from Bess (Radcliffe Road End) for a leg side 4 and he hit a boundary to wide long off. Trego then hit a single. Hales then slogged swept Bess to the leg side ropes. Trego finished the over with a straight 4, 18 off the over. Hales was dropped on 6 by Thompson at backward point off Fisher, the ball reaching him like a tracer bullet. Hales hit Fisher's last ball for 6, 11 off the over. Notts 29 for 0 off 2.1 overs at the end of the power play.

Trego hit Waite for successive fours on the off and leg sides. Trego finished the over with a four through mid wicket, 16 off the over.

Leg-spinner Poysden only had time for four balls as Notts raced home. His first ball was hoisted for a leg side six into Fox Road Stand by Hales, bringing the 50 partnership in 19 balls. Two byes followed. Hales finished the contest with two sixes into the Larwood and Voce and Fox Road, 65 for 0 off 3.4,overs, the victory being achieved with 20 balls to spare. Hales 31 not out off9 balls (1x4, 4x6) and Trego 29 not out off 13 balls (6x4). MAG

a Covid strike last week and an England Covid-strike this week both causing absences from Outlaws squad possibilities, Secret Squirrel will have to keep his options open.

Yorkshire have their own absences, but have had a bit more warning and so have made effective adjustments having already reaped rewards and find themselves in contention for the top spot with Notts.

Secret Squirrel has release a squad of 14 including a returning from illness, Tom Moores which is just as well with Ben Duckett and Joe Clarke both absent.

Who will open with (part of the furniture now until 2023) Alex Hales?

When can Joe Clarke and Sol Budinger return from their Delta Farce isolation?

  1. I was very surprised by the availability of Moores who was will, when the two who were contacts of his Clarke and Budinger are not available. I hope we can trust the judgement of the club doctor, but there could be an influence of not wanting to field a debutant keeper. Expect Moores for Duckett from the last game in the batting, with Slater to open probably, and Paterson or Chappell for Ball in the bowling line up. Evison is a possibility if want to pack the batting. Think Patterson-White is not going to play, unless there is a doubt about one of the other 3 spinners that we don't know about.

    1. If I were a betting man I would say that Trego will open (though he had a poor knock in the last game). Irrespective and hoping not to count chickens we are looking like the dominant team in this and the most vital thing now is not to have a bad day in a knockout match.

  2. Isn't it time someone within the England selectors came clean about Alex Hales? It's not about his failed drug tests, his time has been spent on those misdemeanors; its not that he would make a poor role model in the squeaky clean ECB ideals model, he is playing in their own flagship high profile Hundred; it's something about Morgan and England. Morgan doesn't "trust" Alex but "the door isn't closed" lines have been spun in the past, but an emergency squad hastened together without Morgan's inclusion in it still didn't get Alex in the squad. He should be in the England XI on merit, on weight of runs, on recent performances at the highest levels around the globe, but he isn't and it's England's loss and Notts' gain.

It is sad however that no one at the ECB can be honest with the general public, but should we expect anything less? After all in said and done, they've forced a new, unnecessary competition and format on the world against the wishes of the people the game is played for - the fans.

  3. I think Hales has a reputation on the circuit for being a bit of a "head banger" and a destabilising influence on others.

There is no doubt that he has the talent, but with him I suspect other issues come into the equation.

Remember our learned Director of Cricket described him as being an idiot, but he is "our idiot', when defending him from previous misdemeanours.

I also recall, Lumb and Wessels when interviewed on Sky TV some time ago, telling the commentator that you don't want to be in the dressing room for long if Hales is in the room, although I am sure there was an element of jest attached to the comment.

His International career may well be consigned to historical records, unless this delta variant plays havoc with England's second string selections , and they are forced to pick him out of sheer desperation.

  4. I don't want Alex anywhere near the England set up. They do little but interfere with our players' development and morale. They are a malignant influence especially when the Irish captain is involved. I trust that they have released Ducket and Ball for tonight. Actually I don't trust that at all! Also I regard it as a Notts supporter's duty to support our players whilst ever they wear green and gold even when they have made mistakes.

  5. Well someone has listened to the fans! Calvin Harrison has signed a two year contract. Just in time I reckon , before another County snapped him up .. It was blindingly obvious ti anyone seeing his recent appearances for Notts that this could well be the youngster we have been waiting for. Lets hope he fulfills the promise he has shown so far.
Ref Alex Hales - its simple . Englands loss is Notts gain . Perhaps his England days have come and gone for good? There must be an opinion within the England team selectors that he shouldnt be picked no matter what he achieves with the bat. Morgan just does not want him in the team - end of .
But watching Alex this Blast 20 season its obvious e he is playing better than ever and can take any bowling attack apart .
He is a vital cog in our quest to win the Blast trophy again this year.

  6. For those worried about Luke Fletcher having a second over after both Carts and Samit having had already bowled their second overs, Steven's knowledge of the rules is indeed better that my own (at least) and the rule for games shorter that 10 overs is different to the logical constriction for games of 10-19 overs.

13.3 Number of Overs Per Bowler

13.3.1 No bowler shall bowl more than 4 overs in an innings.

13.3.2 In a delayed or interrupted match where the overs are reduced for both teams or for the team
    bowling second;

13.3.2.1 for innings of rescheduled length of at least 10 overs, no bowler may bowl more than one fifth
of the total overs allowed (unless such a number has been exceeded before the interruption).
Where the total overs is not divisible by 5, one additional over shall be allowed to the maximum
number per bowler necessary to make up the balance.

13.3.2.2 for innings of rescheduled length of between 5 and 9 overs, no bowler may bowl more than
    two overs.

13.3.2.3 When an interruption occurs mid-over and on resumption the bowler has exceeded the new
maximum allocation, he will be allowed to finish the incomplete over.

13.3.3 In the event of a bowler breaking down and being unable to complete an over, the remaining
balls will be allowed by another bowler. Such part of an over will count as a full over only in so far as
    each bowler’s limit is concerned.

13.3.4 The scoreboard shall show the total number of overs bowled and the number of overs bowled
    by each bowler.

  7. 13.3.2.2 - that must be specific to the Blast, as usually it's 1/5 of the overs. It seemed strange that they could bowl only 4 bowlers, but it seems permitted by the competition rules here. Anyone else had issues with the live stream for the Yorks game being blocked, and anyone reported it? As I don't want to report, if already done

  8. What happened to Kent with the whole 1st XI being isolated after just one positive test (rather than each player just being tested daily and only isolated the positive ones) could leave this season a bit of a lottery. It could determine a T20 blast QF or finals day? Hope it won't, but no team's 2nd XI would be strong enough to win in that situation.

  9. Yes the Kent situation that developed virtually overnight is very worrying . All the Counties will now have to have a “stand- by” team waiting in the wings for a swift call to immediate first team action . Could play havoc with any game , at any time.
