Notts slipped to an embarrassing 41-run defeat at Derby today, following a dire performance with the ball which culminated in Derbyshire scoring 113 runs off the last 8 overs of their innings. The wicket had plenty of bounce, but with the Notts attack featuring four bowlers of medium pace and with only Fletcher capable of getting bounce, it was the quicker Derbyshire pair of Hudson-Prentice and Scrimshaw that got more out of the wicket, so much for "home" advantage……
The crowd was greeted to a completely unexpected delayed start, as the Derbyshire ground staff had failed to adequately cover the square after the County Ground was hit by a storm last night. So despite the blazing hot sunshine, play was delayed for three and a half hours as the only solution to their self inflicted problem was for the groundstaff to put six mats over the offending area. The whole episode was a fiasco and should never have happened. Not a good advert for County Cricket.
An unchanged Notts won the toss and elected to bowl, when play finally got under way at 1430 as a 27 over affair. The opening bowlers were Fletcher (Racecourse End) and Hutton (City End) and Derby started circumspectly. Off the final ball of the power play Came hit Hutton for a six over mid wicket, 32 for 0 off six overs. Just like Guildford, this proved a false dawn as Notts bowling, with James once again playing only as batsmen, fell apart. Yes Patterson-White and Evison have little experience but one would have expected better from Fletcher, Hutton and Paterson whose combined figures were 17-0-165-2.
Evison replaced Fletcher for the 7th over and with his second ball had Wagstaff (16) skying to Budinger in the covers, 36 for 1.Paterson bowled the following over. The scoring rate increased and with Derbyshire 61 for 1 off 10 overs, Trego turned to Patterson-White. Came smashed the slow left armer for six over long on. A dreadful 12th over from Paterson, consistently bowling too short, went for 18 including 4 byes. In the following over Came got to 50 off 38 balls. Trego replaced Paterson with Evison who had switched to the City End but the runs continued to flow, Came hitting him for six over square leg, 113 for 1 off 14 overs.
Wood on 34 survived an easy stumping chance off a Patterson-White wide, this proved to be an extremely costly error. Two balls later, Came was leg before to Patterson-White, 115 for 2. Guest (8) charged Patterson-White and was bowled, 135 for 3 in the 17th over. Hutton returned for the 18th over as Tom Wood got to 50 off 34 balls. Fletcher came on for the following over. Derbyshire 145 for 3 off 19 overs.
Wheels fall off!
From this point the bowling fell to pieces as the Notts bowlers forgot all about Yorkers. A full toss from Hutton was hit for six over square leg by Wood, 18 off the 20th over. Evison replaced Fletcher and Paterson replaced Hutton and the South African had Hughes leg before for 25, 180 for 4. Patterson-White (5-0-41-3) returned and was hit for six over long off by Hudson-Prentice. Next ball a spectacular diving catch by Trego at extra cover saw him depart for 9, 189 for 5. But despite the wickets the runs were flowing far too easily. More worrying Slater limped off with what appeared to be an ankle injury.
Fletcher came on for over 24 as the 200 came up with successive boundaries for Wood. Trego as at Guildford failed to get the required number of fielders in the circle, so Fletcher was no balled/ Two more boundaries followed 20 off the over. Paterson (5-0-60-0) returned and was hit for a straight six and an edged four, and a straight four by Wood, 18 off theover. Paterson’s white ball bowling has been as bad and as he red ball bowling has been good. But to be fair, Notts have no real other bowling options, other than the Captain or occasional off-spinner Montgomery.
A short ball from Hutton (6-0-47-1) was pulled for six by Wood as he reached a ton off 55 deliveries, 15 off the over. McKiernan hit Fletcher (6-0-47-1) for an off side six. Wood (109 off 59 balls – 14x4, 3x6) was caught at short third man by Hutton as Derbyshire closed on 258 for six off 27 overs; a score well above par. Tom Wood had batted well and his innings had won Derbyshire the contest; it could well turn out to be his golden career moment albeit against a severely reduced Notts attack. McKiernan 21 not out.
Hudson-Prentice (City End) opened up and bowled a maiden to Budinger who never laid bat and ball; head up in the air, swing hard and hope for the best seems to be his mantra. Rampaul bowled the second over and conceded 6. Budinger (1) fell to catch behind the stumps by Guest, 6 for 1, Hudson-Prentice had him on the end of a string. Montgomery pulled Hudson-Prentice for 6 but the two opening bowlers did not offer much loose stuff as Notts finished the 6 over power play on 43 for 1 as Trego hit the last ball of the restrictions for six over square leg off Rampaul.
Scrimshaw came on for the 7th over and conceded 6. Off spinner Thomson got hit for a leg side six by Trego off his first ball.Montgomery (26) reverse swept Thomson and was brilliantly caught in the covers by Wagstaff, 60 for 2 in the 8th over. Shame. Montgomery is clearly a class act and joins Evison, James, Patterson-White and Harrison of being a player of enormous promise. Great news for Notts fans!
Scrimshaw was too quick for Trego (28) as he pulled a short ball straight to Hudson-Prentice at square leg, 60 for 3. McKiernan came on in the 13th over and James was stumped for 9, 97 for 4. Slater, who batted without a runner, but who seemed to have mobility problems was caught at long on by Hughes off Thomson for 24, 103 for 5. Off spinner Tom Wood came on for the 15th over. Notts stood at 126 for 5 off 17 overs. Patterson-Whitewas dropped on 14 by Priestley at extra cover off Rampaul. McKiernan returned for the 19th over. Patterson-White (27) hit Rampaul for 6 over mid wicket in the 20th over but he fell next over caught by Hughes at long off, Hudson-Prentice the bowler, 150 for 6. Later in the over Schadendorf hit him for 6 over mid-wicket. Hutton hit Scrimshaw for four consecutive fours in the 22nd over which cost 18. Hutton hit McKiernan for 6 over mid wicket as Notts were going down fighting. Schadendorf (29) was run out by Priestley with Hutton going for an impossible two towards long on off Hudson-Prentice, 187 for 7. Hutton then hit Hudson-Prentice for a six over mid wicket. Fletcher was caught behindoff Rampaul for 5, 201 for 8. Top-scorer Hutton (46 off 20 balls – 6x4, 2x6) hit Rampaul for consecutive boundaries but fell to catch at long on by Hughes off Hudson-Prentice. Evison batted number 11 due to a muscle pull obtained late in the Derbyshire innings, was last man to fall bowled by Scrimshaw for 1.Paterson 4 not out. No not Notts man could get a sufficiently high score to make a game of it as they were bowled out for 217 all out off the last ball of the innings. Sussex bound Hudson-Prentice (6-0-37-3) was the best bowler on show today in a contest which featured some pretty mediocre bowling, particularly from the men in green. But the majority of the Notts team are learning on the job, so let’s show some patience, a lot of this young team have huge potential.
Next stop, York on Friday, where Notts’ biggest problem could possibly be to find 11 players to get out on the pitch!
EVERY. BODY. COUNTS! MAG
Bizarrely a "home" fixture for Notts Outlaws . Traditionally, Notts win two-thirds of List A games played against our near neigbours but with squads ravaged by Hundred and injury, the odds have evened-up a little, I'd say.
We're midway through the group stages of the competition and any position is still possible for Notts, whereas Derbyshire might struggle to make the top spot having lost 4 games already.
A quick browse of the Derbyshire website tells you that they have a Members' Forum on Sunday 5th September an hour before their game against Leicestershire.
- A Notts Forum?
- A Notts Forum at a weekend?
- A Notts forum not crammed into a lunch interval?
- Just an idea!

Yes saw Matt Milnes on the evil dish tv. Bowled well, commentators saying similar run and action to the Great Dale Steyn. Direby missing 2 to the Hundred and Madsen to injury hits them far harder than us losing 10 o so. The fact that they've given a RLODC contract to our former Academy leg spinning all rounder Conor Marshall tells you everything as he's been in playing for Sandiacre in the Direby premier league(some I've had drone on at Trent Bridge would try to tell you that this level is equal to first team standard but then 20 minutes later they'd be fitted for their straight jacket). Derby have stung us in t20 down the years but we must still be massive favourites for this encounter ?
ReplyDeleteAbsolute farce at Derby. Sitting in the sun waiting for the square to dry out after it was left uncovered overnight.
ReplyDeleteGood old cricket
ReplyDeleteYou feel that the fiasco with the damp pitch could only happen at Derby.
ReplyDeleteThere appeared to be no action or plan in place to deal with the situation until 11 am when play was due to commence. Truly disgraceful.
When cricket eventually started at 2.30pm, Derbyshire's top order dished out dome savage treatment, to our largely, medium pace attack, on a wicket with some bounce and carry.
Notts are in dire need of an injection of pace in the bowling. What has happened to the"Invisible Man", Mr Zac Chappel, who our Director of Cricket, when signing him, stated that he would be leading our attack for the next 10 years.
With very few selection options available, Notts now face an uphill task in this competition
Our top 5 of Godleman Reece Madsen Du Plooy and Critchley absent. Numerous bowlers out injured. Our 5th win in 28 games this season. Thanks 👍
ReplyDeleteChalk this defeat down to those that agreed to the fixtures...
Delete1/ A home game whilst the county were hosting a Test match - has this ever happened before?
2/ Playing a home game at the opposition's HQ (such as it is), in circumstances having nothing related to covid or weather - again is this unique?
On the face of it, both would be pretty stupid ideas but I suspect both might have happened previously, however not both in conjunction with each other. Any idea MAG?
It's simple Simon, we have at least 11 missing due to the ECB and bodies on top of that due to injury. It helps to even up the contest. We bowled a appallingly badly, Wood rode his luck as well but Derbyshire deserved their win. Would they have won in a 50 over contest with those players? I sincerely doubt it, hence the shenanigans to shorten the match.
DeleteSimple Simon really doesn't get whats happening with the RLODC Cup does he? So the mighty Derbyshire had some players out. Lots of them. Oh what a coincidence so did Notts. Has he ever heard of the Hundred? First A List win since 2004 - well done. Makes you proud. But why does the Peakfan Derbyshire blog say this is the worst Derbyshire season since the 70s then?
DeleteShouldn't pay too much attention to Peakfan's blog at the moment. Having been slavishly, even fawningly, loyal to Derbyshire's hierarchy for years he's suddenly turned on them since he wrote a glowing season's preview in March, demanding the heads of coaches and supervisory board members. No idea why, but he's clearly on a vendetta. They've had a bad season, but not so bad that they haven't dominated all 3 one day games against Notts, and with a bit more composure and nous would have won all of them.
DeleteI get weary to be honest
ReplyDeleteNo sour grapes, Derbyshire win.
But both counties should look at themselves re the pitch situation/farce described above. Notts as the nominally "home" team should have insisted things were done right.
Not only have NCCC avoided our home ground completely, and I really think unnecessarily, for all "home" group matches, but Derby is actually the only one with decent public transport access.
This really is shameful from Notts, showing something very close to contempt for paying customers.
I know 2 friends and regulars who travelled from Grimsby for this one. I think a letter of apology is the least that should happen, to them and all those treated in this way.
A fiasco at Derby yesterday - the game nearly ruined .
ReplyDeleteWas it a case of casual slackness in not covering the playing area properly overnight?
Or was the overnight downpour on a scale that no covers could cope with?
As it was classed as a “ home “ match for Notts I wonder if the Notts groundstaff had any input into the basic situation ?
Any one know any relevant information ?
After all , a biggish crowd were left sitting like lemons for hours on end in the hot sun with nothing to watch except blue/green sawdust being scattered and blown about.
a bloody shambles the whole place
DeleteThe only positive I can see is Lisa getting her dream final in 50 over competition,Glamorgan v Durham at Trent Bridge or maybe Lady Bay could host it.
ReplyDeleteLady bay, she’s been trying to work a flanker to get the boots ground on the circuit for years
ReplyDeleteIt was your home game. Own it !!
ReplyDeleteLook on the Notts ccc websute and click onto Tickets for Royal London Final . You can actually choose the exact stand and seat number you wish to sit in . That enables you to see which seats are available
ReplyDeleteNearly all of them !
There's nothing new with this. This seating plan is available for International matches and has been used for our domestic matches all season. How were you supposed to obtain your preferred seat without it ? Just have a random guess and hope for the best every time you turn up ?
DeleteFor games with mediicre attendances like the 4 dayers and Royal London you should just be able to turn up and pay on the day and sit where you like and change seats if unhappy. Thats the system at Derby . Why all the messing about at Trent Bridge . They just want extra control forcno good reason . I , and others I know are voting with their feet - by just not going .
ReplyDeleteSimple
I emailed the club earlier this week to ask if pay on the day or the tea time reduced admission was going to be reintroduced.
ReplyDeleteI received a very prompt reply which said”we’re likely to retain online ticketing for the remainder of the season although we do hope and expect to resume our full ticket office service ahead of the 2022 season. Thanks for your continued support . Best regards “
You may have a good point CRUETKING. In order I can make a case to the club could you let me know whether you and these others you mention who are voting with their feet are indeed Notts Members ? And can you be specific please so it carries more weight as an argument?
ReplyDeleteWelbeck - - I have already spent too much time and energy on the subject of the current restructive ticket entry system at TB fir games that only attract a few hundred or a couple of thousand at most.
ReplyDeleteViz. A quick example of members not attendind . I have two elderly members living pretty close to me who are not on the internet so no computer or internet. So to gain TB admission they have to phone the ticket office . Have you tried to do this recently? I have - twice recently( with the same tea time query as Fox Road) . However after repeated attemots to speak to someone and failing - i gave up . A follow up email remains unanswered .
What is the point of this over bureaucratic system in place for bog standard matches? Total control of visiting Members plus a few pay on the day fans .
Look at the recent weather conditions - very varied and unpredictable. Look at the weather forecast for the day in question , just turn up as a Member or pay on the day and sit where you like . Its always been like that for low attendance games . So why now force folk to pay in advance ? Whats the point of a Membership card if you cannot get into the ground by simple use of it . From what Fox Road says this barmy system will be in place for the poorly attended ( probably cool conditions and poor light) September 4 dayers at TB .
Why ?
There is a perception that people that attend cricket have to be kept safe because we are all living in fear of covid - at least a vocal minority on Twitter still are. For most now, it's a series of obstacles that have to be navigated just to get on with our lives. Spontaneity is not to be tolerated because how can your possible unknown actions be risk assessed in advance if you act so anti-socially and selfishly? And put your mask on now your reading a comment posted by a stranger, do you want to infect the whole of Carlton / Sherwood / Wilford / Edwalton / wherever!!!
ReplyDeleteI just wonder if the current Notts ccc ground entry system is some sort if cynical marketing ploy? Notts have an ever increasing database of names and email addresses of cricket fans wanting to attend a match at TB . " Away " fans included - countrywide. These fans can now be bombarded with emails from the Notts marketing dept .
ReplyDeleteSo is this the REAL REASON why the current cumbersome entry system is being used?
A simple marketing exercise!?
Time will tell on that one. Depends wether you believe in cock up or conspiracy
ReplyDeleteWith Notts as they are today I would say conspiracy!
ReplyDeleteRelevant and active email addresses are valuable commodities these days . They can be sold off in blocks for a tidy sum . Of course nearly all organisations deny this practice but those of us with computers know the reality of the situation
