Yorkshire Vikings Royal London One Day Cup at Clifton Park, No Result

DOWNPOUR ENDS GAME

Today's game at York ended as a no result, after a heavy 1500 downpour which lasted 30 minutes proved too much for the groundsmen. The umpires during their 1700 inspection found a wet patch around the bowlers delivery stride at the City End and deemed that play could not recommence by1748 which was the latest time Yorkshire could face the minimum of 10 overs to constitute a game.

With Luke Fletcher on Fire Service in Wales and Evison crocked, Notts included Tom Barber for the first time this season and gave a debut to 17 year old slow left armer Fateh Singh. Singh who attends Trent College plays his cricket for Cavaliers and Carrington CC. Due to the elements, neither player entered the field of play.

Despite a dire forecast, a crowd of around 1,500 attended the very pleasant and well appointed venue in Clifton area of the City which is about a 20 minute walk along the riverside from the station.

The highlight from a Notts perspective was an excellent opening partnership of 146 in 23.2 overs between Mr Consistent Ben Slater (74off 83 balls – 10x4) and Sol Budinger (71 off 63 balls – 7x4, 4x6). This was by far the best we have seen from Budinger who scored his maiden List A fifty. Instead of trying to constantly hit the leather off the ball, this was an innings of controlled aggression for the young left hander, and he was so much better for it.

Yorkshire won the toss and elected to bowl in sunshine. Coad (City End) and Waite (Rugby Ground End) were the opening attack as the skies quickly darkened. Rain stopped play at 1117 with Notts 25 for 0 off 4.5 overs with Slater on 23 and Budinger on 2. A series of short sharp showers followed.

Play restarted at 1238 with the game now a 41 over a side contest. Budinger hit three boundaries off the 8th over bowled by Waite. In the 10th over, Revis replaced Waite from the Rugby Ground End. The following over was bowled by Pillans. In the 12th over, Budinger hit Revis for 6 overbackward square leg. In the 15th over, leg-spinner Josh Sullivan was introduced. Budinger hit Revis for a six over long on. In the 17th over bowled by Sullivan, Slater via a single and Budinger via a straight six both reached their fifties in 61 and 41 balls respectively. George Hill came on for the 18th over. Notts had reached 128 for 0 after 20 overs.

A long hop from Sullivan was pulled for six by Budinger. Budinger was dropped at square leg on 69 off Sullivan, but did make the most of his fortune as he fell in the next over top edging Pillans to Duke behind the stumps, 146 for one in the 24th over. In the same over, Slater on 71 was dropped on the square leg ropes by Hill.

With dark clouds threatening overhead, Coad returned for the following over. Slater departed for 74 caught at long leg by Coad off Pillans. The batsmen had crossed and Trego (1) fell next ball caught behind by Duke, 152 for 3 in the 26th over. James (3) was caught at short mid-wicket by Fraine as Pillans (6-0-26-4) struck again, 158 for 4 in the 28th over. With batting conditions getting harder, Notts had lost 4 wickets from 13 deliveries from the right arm fast man

Patterson-White departed leg before to Sullivan for 2, 165 for 5 after 29 overs. Waite returned and Montgomery hit him for consecutive boundaries in the 32nd over. Rain stopped play at 1428 with Notts 185 for 5 off  33 overs with Montgomery on 20 and Schadendorf on 4. Yorkshire, and Pillans in particular had exploited the bowling conditions to take 5 wickets in 10 overs to halt the Notts charge.

The rain was initially light but became heavy for 30 minutes before stopping at 1530. The rain did not return and with the groundstaff working hard, the covers off it appeared that the players would return at around 1730. However umpires Warren and Middlebrook found a wet patch in the bowling run up at the City End, and the players shook hands at 1705. It was a sad end to an enjoyable day at a venue which is an excellent addition to the circuit. MAG

Thunder and rain look to be on the menu at York but just in case it's not, Secret Squirrel has announced a squad with a few deviations from the usual happy campers.

It will be a squad without Luke Fletcher who has been drafted by "Ben Duckett's Welsh Fire" - which must be a new franchise, according to Trent Bridge propaganda.

Ben Slater
Sol Budinger
Matthew Montgomery
Peter Trego c
Lyndon James
Liam Patterson-White
Joey Evison
Dane Schadendorf x
Brett Hutton
Fateh Singh
Sam King
Tom Barber
Toby Pettman
Dane Paterson

This squad assumes both Joey Evison and Ben Slater have recovered from their Derby scrapes.

I think we have to assume Ben Compton has left the scene as the above squad is very light on batsmen and he represents the only senior name left after the ravages of Hundred and England.

I did notice that Rocket recent call up, Jack Leaning was back with his county Kent again - is there any chance some of our boys could have time off for good behaviour and return to where they belong, Steven Mullaney for instance?

  1. I love Notts, and spent many happy years living in York. So much so, I still hope the football team wins, more in hope than expectation !

Was actually registered to play for York CC. Best I managed was one reserve match at Hull, where I was born (well not at the cricket ground !)

But was at the wicket when we won (3 not out and took a catch !)

1874, well feels like it !

  3. NOTTS LOOK PRETTY SHORT ON OPTIONS FOR TODAYS MATCH .
Perhaps , Randall , Hemmings , Robinson , Chris Read and Co can be re called ! They have the experience.
Who would have thought two years ago that Notts would be struggling to put out a good competitive first team eleven to contest a Royal London match?!
With whats happening this strange season will it mean the 18 Counties will need bigger squads in future otherwise part time casual players may be called up to participate in important games ?
