Day 4
GLAMORGAN CRUISE TO EXPECTED WIN, BY 7 WICKETS
Glamorgan cruised an easy seven victory at sunny Trent Bridge today, getting home with 39 overs unused. With the sun out and the wicket relatively flat, batting was relatively easy. Notts could only survive for ten overs setting Glamorgan a small target of 166 to win. This proved routine with Labuschagne finishing on 50 and Carlson on a run a ball 47 as they added an unbroken 74 for the fourth wicket in 14.5 overs.
First thing Hutton (17) and Evison (once again batting with a runner) survived 7 overs until the former shouldered arms to Hogan (Pavilion End) and lost his off stump, 234 for 9 in the 94th over. Evison (37) was trying to farm the strike and off the last delivery of a Weighell over, he chased a legside delivery and was caught behind by Cooke, Notts 242 all out off 96.5 overs.
Glamorgan needed 166 to win off 84 overs. Hutton (Pavilion End) and Pattinson opened the bowling with Glamorgan getting off to a rapid start racing to 26 for 0 off 6 overs, James Pattinson 3 0 22 0. Paterson came on for the 7th over as Hutton changed ends. With Glamorgan 37 for 0 after 11 overs, Patterson-White came on from the Radcliffe Road End and with his seventh ball had Salter lbw for 16, 42 for 1 in the 14th over. On the stroke of lunch Lloyd (23) shouldered arms and lost his off stump to Paterson. Glamorgan 52 for 2 off 18.5 overs at lunch with Labuschagne 8 not out.
Glamorgan only took a further 26.1 overs to obtain the remaining 114 runs required after lunch. Labuschagne hit Patterson-White for a straight six in the 30th over. The following over, Northeast (23) pulled Pattinson to Paterson at long leg who took the swirling ball falling backwards, 92 for 3. This proved to be the last wicket to fall. Pattinson after 5 over spell costing 18, made way for the returning Paterson. Labuschagne was dropped on 35 by Moores off Paterson. The South African was the best Notts bowler today and deserved more than his solitary wicket. It was perhaps symbolic that the winning hit at 1519 was a hooked six by Carlson off the out of touch Pattinson who had match figures of 37 3 168 2 which very much speak for themselves.
Glamorgan had the best of the bowling conditions, after winning the toss on a green pitch and cloudy skies, Notts collapsing from 258 for 4 to 302 all out. Notts fought back to restrict Glamorgan to 248 for 8, but Pattinson was over bowled as Patterson-White was ignored, crucially 106 runs were added for the ninth wicket. Glamorgan bowled outstandingly to rip the heart of the Notts batting with Duckett standing alone on the burning deck.
Notts have to lick their wounds and now head to Durham. Their top order batting has failed in all three innings, most worrying is the form of the two opening batsmen. What a shame that in the one innings that Hameed was batting well, he was cruelly run out at the non-striker’s end. Promotion will not be easy, particularly as all the teams now possess two overseas players which was not the case during the Covid hit 2021 season. MAG
Day 3
OUTSTANDING ANTIPODEAN BOWLING TAKES GLAMORGAN TO (ALMOST) THE BRINK OF VICTORY
An outstanding bowling performance from Glamorgan put them well on course for victory at sun drenched Trent Bridge today. Notts stood at 224 for 8 at the close, with a lead of 147 after the Glamorgan seamers filleted the fragile Notts batting line-up, with Timm van der Gugten (4-51) leading the way.
Glamorgan added a further 25 runs in 6.5 overs in the early morning sunshine. Evison failed to take the field as he was nursing a sore foot. Hutton (Radcliffe Road End) and Paterson bowled the opening five overs and then made way for Pattinson and Patterson-White. It took Patterson-White just five balls to dismiss van der Gugten (62) who skied the ball to Clarke at mid-on. Glamorgan 379 all out off 107.5 overs, led by 77 runs on first innings. The ninth wicket partnership of 106 between Weighell and van der Gugten swinging the match towards Glamorgan. Notts could reflect on good bowling performances from Hutton and Paterson. The undercooked Pattinson (27-3-111-1) was over bowled and leaked far too many runs, Patterson-White (8.5-4-22-2) after his eight wickets at Hove was clearly under bowled.
Straight away in the Notts reply it was clear that Neser (Radcliffe Road End) and Hogan were bowling much better than their Notts counterparts. Slater and Hameed were entrenched and struggling. A delivery from Hogan jumped up and Hameed fended it off his glove to Carlson in the gully, 0 for 1 after 3.4 overs. A single for Duckett off Hogan saw Notts off the mark, 31 balls into the innings, but off the very next ball, the bogged down Slater was tempted by a short ball from Hogan and top edged an attempted pull shot to keeper Cooke, 1 for 2. Clever bowling from Hogan, bad batting from Slater. The quality of Glamorgan’s bowling could be gauged by the fact that Notts only got double figures off the last delivery of the 11th over. Van der Gugten came on for the 13th over and Clarke hit his first two deliveries for four, as in company with Duckett they temporarily steadied the ship. Notts got to lunch on 45 for 2 off 18 overs with Duckett on 24 and Clarke on 21.
The Notts 50 came up in the opening over after lunch bowled by van der Gugten. Neser returned for the 28th over and Clarke (30 off 56 balls, 5x4) edged his fifth ball to Cooke, 63 for 3. Off-spinner Salter came on from the Radcliffe Road End in the 35th over. Duckett got to his 50 off 113 balls with a glorious cover drive for four off Neser. Notts 100 was achieved in the 31st over via a swept boundary by Duckett off Salter, who only bowled a three over spell before being replaced by Weighell who got the struggling Mullaney (8 off 37 balls) caught behind by Cooke, 114 for 4. Labuschagne switched ends and bowled a three over spell from the Radcliffe Road End before tea. Callum Taylor came on bowling off spin replacing Hogan from the Pavilion End. Notts got to tea on 158 for 4 off 55 overs with Duckett on 93 and Moores on 21.
Neser (Pavilion End) and van der Gugten returned after tea and in the fourth over after the interval Duckett (95 off 178 balls, 13x4) edged van der Gugten to Lloyd at first slip, 161 for 5. Duckett had followed up his 122 with another high-class, mature innings where runs were hard earned against an experienced bowling attack, bowling to their maximum potential. Notts were now in big trouble with a lead of just 84 runs. Moores was badly dropped by keeper Cooke off van der Gugten when on 23. Patterson-White (8) did not last long given out leg before to van der Gugten to a delivery which appeared to be missing leg stump, 175 for 6, Richard Illingworth the umpire. The uncharacteristic obdurate Moores (30 off 83 balls, 3x4) did not capitalise on his let off departing to catch at second slip by Northeast off the outstanding van der Gugten on 30, 178 for 7 in the 69th over. Evison came out at nine with Hameed's as his runner. Pattinson (3) fell to catch at second slip by Northeast as van der Gugten picked up his fourth wicket, 187 for 8 after 73 overs. Taylor was kept on for an eight over spell to speed up the over rate. Hutton (25*) joined Evison (13*) and the two added an unbroken 37 in the remaining 14 overs before the close at 1835, including negotiating seven overs with the new ball which was taken with Notts on 207 for 8 off 80 overs.
The quality of the bowling performance can be measured by the fact that only Slater could be culpable for his own dismissal, and seven of the eight wickets fell to dismissals behind the wicket, the eighth being a rather dubious leg before decision. Notts with a current over rate of minus three, will be handicapped by the loss of Evison. Patterson-White will no doubt be given more overs. The indifferent bowling performance by Notts after tea yesterday looks like costing them the match. MAG
Day 2
NORTHEAST STEERS GLAMORGAN AHEAD
and 9th wicket stand make Notts suffer
Glamorgan finished the day in a position of strength leading Notts by 52 runs with one wicket standing after their ninth wicket pair of James Weighell and Timm van der Gugten shared a ninth wicket stand of 106 in 25 overs after Notts had reduced Glamorgan to 248-8. The very fact that they survived 18 overs against the new ball, albeit against at tiring attack, suggests the wicket has followed the Trent Bridge norm of getting easier as the match progresses.
On a day of virtually continuous sunshine and with temperature hitting 19 degrees Celsius, Notts took a wicket in the fourth over of the morning when Pattinson had Salter (16) caught at first slip by Clarke, 41 for 1. This proved to be a false dawn for the Australian who did not take another wicket and who finished with the expensive figures of 26-3-105-1. In the next over, Notts got the key wicket of Marnus Labuschagne (3) who was leg before playing no shot to Hutton, 46 for 2. Pattinson was bowling fast from the Radcliffe Road End but Lloyd and Northeast withstood the barrage. Paterson and Mullaney replaced Hutton and Pattinson for the 18th and 19th overs respectively. The 50-run partnership between Lloyd and Northeast took 91 balls as Glamorgan's 100 was achieved in the 25th over. After a four over spell from the Radcliffe Road End, Mullaney made way for Evison. A single off his first delivery saw Lloyd to his 50 off 70 balls. Liam Patterson-White came into the attack from the Pavilion End 10 minutes before lunch. Glamorgan got to lunch on 130 for 2 off 35 overs with Lloyd on 58 and Northeast on 44. After the initial breakthroughs, Glamorgan had had the better of the morning session.
Pattinson (Radcliffe Road) and Paterson were bowling in tandem straight after lunch. The century partnership for the 3rd wicket took 191 balls. Northeast got to a relatively untroubled 50 in 103 balls. Brett Hutton returned for the 47th over and after opening with a wide, he dismissed Lloyd (76) via a regulation catch at second slip by Duckett, 163 for three. The third wicket had added 117 in 37 overs. Hutton bowled an outstanding over to Kiran Carlson but failed to take his wicket as he was dropped by third slip Hameed moving to his left before he had scored, an easy chance missed. Next over Mullaney replaced Paterson from the Pavilion End for a two over spell before Evison returned for the 54th over. Evison made the breakthrough in his following over when Carlson (22) was caught behind by Moores, 198 for 4. In the 60th over, Cooke (0) became Evison's second victim caught once again by Moores, 200 for 5 in the 58th over. Pattinson came back for the 61st over and after a five over burst Evison was replaced by Paterson who took a wicket with his fourth ball having Taylor (9) caught at first slip by Clarke, 214 for 6. Glamorgan got to tea on 233 for 6 off 69 overs with Northeast on 77 and Neser on 13.
After tea, Neser pulled Evison (Pavilion End) for six over square leg, but Evison got his revenge next ball, bowling the Australian International for 20, 248 for 7 in the 72nd over. Northeast (85) finally departed losing his off stump via a peach from Paterson for 85, 248 for 8 in the 73rd over. Notts at this stage looked like taking a first innings lead. The new ball was taken by Hutton and Pattinson with Glamorgan 278-8 off 80 overs. The ninth wicket pair of Weighell and van der Gugten attacked it with vigour.
The 50-run partnership between Weighell and van der Gugten came via successive drives to the boundary ropes by van der Gugten off Pattinson, the 300 coming up in the 84th over. Paterson replaced Pattinson in the 86th over. fours overs later Patterson-White very belatedly came back into the attack and Evison was reintroduced for the 93rd over. Van der Gugten got to his 50 off 88 balls as the century partnership came up in 143 balls. The Glamorgan 350 followed in the 97th over. Just before the close, Weighell (45) finally departed caught behind by Moores off Patterson-White, 354 for 9, no more runs were added. The last four overs of the day were maidens as van der Gugten was unbeaten on a 97 ball 56 (9x4) and Hogan had faced 11 balls without getting off the mark.
Hutton and Paterson were the pick of the bowlers, but Evison, despite picking up three wickets and Pattinson proved expensive. Mullaney had over bowled the very hard-working Pattinson, leaving Patterson-White with only eight overs in the day, he should have bowled much more
Glamorgan who have the luxury of batting last are clearly in a dominant position, Notts will have to bat all day tomorrow to stay in the game.. MAG
Day 1
NOTTS SUFFER POST-TEA INDIGESTION
as Glamorgan find some fire after a Duckett ton!
Lyndon James was rested from his bowling exploits in Hove and with Fletcher nursing a hamstring strain, Notts gave seasonal debuts to overseas fast men James Pattinson and Dane Paterson. Glamorgan fielded a cosmopolitan line-up including a South Africa (Chris Cooke), two South African born Australian internationals (Michael Neser and Marnus Labuschagne) and two New South Walians (Michael Hogan and Timm van der Gugten).
Neser (Radcliffe Road End) and Hogan opened the bowling on a sunny morning, in front of reasonable sized crowd. In the 7th over, Slater (17) edged Neser to Northeast at second slip who took a regulation catch, 26 for one. Weighell and van der Gugten came on the 10th and 11th overs respectively. The Notts 50 came up in the 13th over. Glamorgan got a huge stroke of luck as Weighell slipped in his follow up and deflected a straight drive from Duckett off his boot on to the non-strikers stumps with Hameed out of his ground. Hameed who had been timing the ball well departed for 45-ball 34, 69 for 2 in the 18th over. Lloyd came on in the 22nd over and a first ball loosener was hit for a leg side four and the last ball of the over was deposited by Clarke for a six over square leg. The Notts 100 came up in the 25th over via a single by Duckett off the returning Neser. Just before lunch, Duckett was dropped on 29 by Northeast at second slip off Lloyd. Notts went to the interval on 108 for 2 off 29 overs with Duckett on 30 and Clarke on 23. Notts had won the session.
Duckett and Clarke batted for an hour after lunch, until Clarke played on via his forearm to van der Gugten for 35. The third wicket partnership had added 67 in 25 overs. Next over Duckett got to his 50 off 104 balls via an edged boundary off Weighell. With Lyndon James rested, Evison was pushed up the order to number 5 but fell for a 5-ball duck, leg before to van der Gugten, 142 for 4 in the 45th over. Duckett put the foot on the accelerator, taking a liking to Salter, in partnership with Mullaney, fresh from his PB at Hove. Notts gained their first batting point via a leg side four by Duckett off Lloyd in the 59th over. Just before tea, Labuschagne came on bowling medium pacers from the Radcliffe Road End. In the last over before tea, Duckett got to his 100 off 188 balls with a swept single, off-spinner Salter the bowler. Notts 223 for 4 off 64 overs with Duckett on 101 and Mullaney on 28.
The match turns antipodean
Glamorgan fought back impressively in the last session as Notts collapsed from 258-4 to 283-9, before an unorthodox last wicket stand between Pattinson and Paterson saw Notts to their third batting point. With the cloud darkening, in the 68th over, a six from Duckett off Weighell brought the 100 stand for the 5th wicket. Notts got to 250 in the 71st over via a single from Duckett off Hogan (Radcliffe Road End). Two overs later, Mullaney (44 off 75 balls; 5x4, 1x6) drove Hogan straight to Sam Northeast, who took the catch in the covers by his bootlaces, 258 for 5. Notts were to lose their last six wickets in 15 overs. Tom Moores, surprisingly still ahead of Patterson-White in the order, edged Labuschagne to Cooke behind the stumps, departing for a 4-ball 4, 263-6. Five balls later Patterson-White, played a poor shot, playing across a straight ball and being leg before to Hogan for a three-ball duck. Labuschagne, normally a leg-break bowler, was bowling bouncy medium pacers, a delivery bouncing way over Cooke’s head and going for 4 byes along with two no balls. However, next ball who got the key wicket of Duckett who hit the ball straight back to the Australian batting sensation, 270 for 8. Duckett, stuck at it, sometimes struggling to time the ball, but his 122 could prove invaluable as the game unfolds. The new ball was taken with Notts on 272-8 after 80 overs by Neser (Radcliffe Road End) and van der Gugten. Hutton (8) was struggling to survive and lost his off stump to Neser (3-58). Pattinson hit van der Gugten for successive offside fours. Pattinson was determined to keep the strike and turned down three singles. Finally, a single by the Australian off van der Gugten took Notts to their third batting point. Pattinson (20) mistimed a leg side hit and bowler Neser took the catch running towards the scoreboard, as the ball returned from orbit. Notts 302 all out off 88.1 overs, would probably be happy with the eventual total after being inserted, but a sorry decline from 258 for 4 had taken off the gloss. Dane Paterson finished on 4 not out.
With attacking fields in place, Glamorgan sped to 33-0 off 5 overs. James Pattinson (Radcliffe Road End) had Glamorgan skipper David Lloyd (13*) caught at second slip by Duckett off the second delivery of the innings, unfortunately it was a no ball. Pattinson shared the new ball with Brett Hutton, as Andrew Salter hit three fours in his 13 not out.
Some balls misbehaved during the day, with Duckett receiving a blow to the helmet and fingers, but as the norm at Trent Bridge, the wicket could well flatten out over the next three days. It goes without saying that Labuschagne after picking up an unlikely 5-0-11-2 as seventh bowler holds the keys to the Glamorgan innings. MAG

This what we have been allowed to know:
- Dane Paterson is in the county or at least the country, having flown-in this week.
- Jimmy Pattinson is in the county; photographed at Lady Bay yesterday all kitted out in the training clobber.
- Stuart Broad is expected to be made available.
What we haven't been allowed to know is:
- Are any of the three above fit?
- What's the state of Fletch?
If any two of those mentioned are fit and available to play tomorrow, who would you leave out of the winning side that played at Hove?
Joey Evison is the obvious candidate but after he batted as well ...
Glad I do not have to choose.
ReplyDeleteJoey did so much better than the big name top 4, and Lyndon's partnership with Skip, started our comeback.
Yes. All very interesting and we now await the squad news later. Presumably ECB say whether Broad plays or not ? Assume BIG Fletch won’t be fit or risked so early in the campaign so someone comes in for him ? Joey Evison may be sacrificed but then his ability as a batsmen makes it difficult to leave him out. Could the Hit-Man(Hutton) be rotated after his huge effort at Hove on that unresponsive deck ? It’s a tricky for Pete, but as stated above we don’t know the states of fitness of some of these lads, so his decision may be made easier by this ? None of this is important on Pravda, however, as i can enjoy being bombarded by emails from Restaurant Six instead. And whilst I have never dined at this establishment(and never will) am perfectly willing to try their new Friday lunchtime menu if someone on here wants to treat me to sample this fine dining experience?
ReplyDeleteWas looking forward to seeing Billy Root but note he’s playing for their stiffs away against Warwickshire
ReplyDeleteA fascinating day, a strong recovery from 142 for 4 by Duckett, superb today, and skipper to 258 for 4.
ReplyDeleteThen 6 wickets go down for

Although we scored at a decent rate, and there were some lovely shots, Glamorgan attack always posed a threat.
Will be interested in match report, at least we got the third batting point and it is a competitive total
Bit of a Curate's egg today. Finished ok with 300+. Good night's sleep for our bowlers then attack like devils tomorrow!
ReplyDeleteMy group of friends at the match, including me, can be a bit biased.
ReplyDeleteOne of us suggested Glamorgan batted a bit skowly.
I don't think so, Lloyd and Northeast played it just right, as Duckett and Mullaney did for us.
The difference was their tail wagged big time
But Notts can still win this match.
Lunch time Sat, Boy we need someone to get a hundred and good support !
ReplyDeleteMorning even worse than the 2 evening sessions from Days 1 and 2.
ReplyDeleteSteven Mullaney on BBC
"We are still hanging in with a lead of 147 and two wickets left and the current partnership between Brett and Joey could be huge if they can carry on in the morning. If we can build on this lead by as many as we can we will hopefully be in a position to build some pressure.
"Ben Duckett was magnificent again and although there were a couple of poor shots, myself included, you have to give credit to Glamorgan, their big three seamers were outstanding.
"At one point, Van der Gugten bowled four overs in a row where he didn't miss off stump. They have shown us how to bowl really.
"That (Glamorgan) partnership for the ninth wicket hurt us. There have been missed opportunities but we still have a chance."
Trent Bridge.co.uk propaganda reads the game as being "finely balanced". I hope they're right, but it's not how feel it is...
ReplyDeleteCome on Joey !
ReplyDeleteThe sunshine was lovely. The Notts performance is best forgotten.
ReplyDeleteYes indeed
DeleteWell played Glamorgan
ReplyDeleteYesterday's humiliating defeat was the first time that Glamorgan had won a championship fixture at TB since 1998
