Leicestershire Foxes Vitality T20 Blast at Trent Bridge Loss

WAS THAT THE WORST PERFORMANCE YET?

The woeful Notts T20 season hit a new low last night as they miserably failed to chase 171 for victory over the Leicestershire Foxes, being bowled out for 123 with two balls to spare. Dan’s Army will not be progressing to the knockout stages.

On a perfect mid-summer evening with the sun blazing. Leicestershire won the toss and chose to bat. Notts unbelievably once more were unchanged. After Notts winless 2019 championship campaign, the team was turned around by the infusion of youth which improved the team dynamic, spirit and enthusiasm. Why has this still to happen to the T20 in 2022? The team is over the hill, lacks athleticism in the field and is one of the reasons why the crowd was so poor. It’s now rare for the club to announce the crowd but no more than 5,000 were attendance no doubt put off by the ridiculously high-ticket pricing and the even more ridiculous seat reservation scheme. It’s not just the team out in the middle that has been underperforming, they have been instances of members of many years standing being refused admittance in to their own pavilion, what on earth is happening?

Welch hit Fletcher (Pavilion End ) for six over mid-wicket and an edged four through third man, 12 off the 1st over. Welsh (11) miscued Carter to Christian at mid-off, 13 for 1, two off the second over. Swindells hit Fletcher for four over mid-off, seven off the third over. Swindells (6) swept Patel straight to Harrison at backward square leg, 21 for 2. Hill hit Patel through the covers for 4, six off the 4th over. Hill found the mid-wicket ropes off Paterson, six off the 5th over. Lilley reverse swept Carter for 4 and Hill hit him for 4 down to third man, 46 for 2 after 6 overs. On a slow, two-paced track Carter (2-0-14-1) was not given another over.

Lilley blasted Patel for 6 over square leg, eight off the 7th over. Harrison went for 6 plus a bye in the 8th over. Lilley (23), often a thorn in Notts side, hit Patel for an offside boundary but perished next ball caught low down on the point ropes by Harrison, 61 for 3 in the 9th over Patel’s 300th T20 wicket. Ackermann was dropped on 2 by Christian at mid-on off Mullaney, an easy chance on another night, but this was a night where Notts were completely out fielded by younger, hungrier and much more athletic opponents, Leicestershire 73 for 3 off 10 overs

Hill hit Harrison for 6 into The Fridge, 11 off the over. Hill (39) found the third man ropes off Mullaney but was caught and bowled off the very next ball, 88 for 4, nine off the 12th over. Ackermann swept Harrison (3-0-28-0) for 4 and bottom edged him for 4, 104 for 4 off 13 overs. Mulder hit Mullaney for a straight six, Ackermann(13) lost his middle stump to Mullaney, 113 for 5 off 14 overs. Rishi Patel hit Samit Patel (4-0-29-2) for a cover driven four, eight off the over.

Dan Christian ran out Rishi Patel (5) going for a quick single to mid-on, Mullaney the bowler, 122 for 6. Mulder hit Mullaney (4-0-32-2) to the extra cover ropes, nine off the 16th over. Mulder was caught at long on off Paterson for 27, 133 for 7. five off the 17th over.

Notts though allowed Leicestershire a lifeline as they gathered 35 runs off the last three overs, mainly thanks to some big hitting by Ben Mike. Ahmed was dropped on 1 by Mullaney in the covers off Fletcher but departed next ball was caught at mid-off by Christian off Fletcher, 136 for 8. Naveen hit Fletcher for four via a square cut, 7 off the 18th over. Mike hit Paterson (3-0-26-1) for successive sixes over mid-wicket and extra cover. A massive mix up between Mike and Naveen saw the later run out by Duckett who threw to Moores at long on, 156 for 9, 15 off the 19th over. Mike hit Fletcher (4-0-38-2) to the extra cover boundary and then for a six over backward square leg. Mike (29 off 12 balls) was out off the final delivery of the innings caught by Duckett off Fletcher at deep mid-wicket. Leicestershire 170 all out off 20 overs, a total which appeared 10 or so over par on a pitch where it was difficult to time the ball. The Notts paceman had unfortunately failed to put the ball in the right areas sufficiently enough, again.

Notts innings never really got going. Parkinson conceded two off the opening over from the Pavilion End. Clarke hit Naveen for an offside 4. Hales hit Parkinson for successive fours through extra cover and long on to give Notts hope. Clarke was bowled by Parkinson for 8, 20 for 1 after 3 overs. Hales hit a free hit from Naveen for a backward point ropes, nine off the third over. Duckett pulled Mulder for 4 and Hales hit a lofted boundary through the covers, 10 off the 5th over. Hales hit Mike for 6 over long on. Notts 47 for 1 after 6 overs.

Duckett hit Ahmed for 4 through mid-wicket but was bowled next ball for 11, 51 for 2, 8 off the 7th over. On a gripping surface which was clearly helping the spinners, Patel should have appeared at four but as scripted Moores came to the crease, an out and out slogger who cannot manipulate the ball and who eats up too many dot balls.

Hales glided Mulder for 4 through third man, seven off the 8th over. Ahmed went for 5 in over number nine. Moores was completely bogged down and was caught at long off by Mulder off Parkinson for 6, 70 for 3, 4 off the 10th over and needing what appeared a near impossible 101 in the remaining 10 overs

Ackermann conceded six off the 11th over. Mullaney (5) was caught at long on by Mulder off Ahmed, 77 for 4. Mullaney apart from his personal batting best in a completely lost cause at Headingley is having a truly miserable T20 campaign. Three came off the 12th over. Ackermann went for 4 singles in the 13th over. Parkinson (4-0-21-2) conceded 4 in his last over as the Notts innings was clearly stuck in the mud. Christian (6) fell to catch at mid-off by Ackermann off Mike, 88 for 5. Hales hit Mike for a straight six into the Pavilion to reach 50 off 42 balls but fell the following ball caught at long on by Mulder off Mike for 55, 97 for 6 off 15 overs. Cue the mass exodus which now has replaced the execrable Sweet Caroline as one of the scripted timetabled events of the evening.

Notts reached three figures as Patel edged a four off Ahmed (4-0-25-1), nine off the 16th over. Mike went for 5 off over 17. Patel (12) was caught on the run by Mike at deep extra cover off Naveen , 112 for 7. Carter edged Naveen for four through third man. Harrison (8) was bowled attempting a scoop off Naveen, six off the over. Mike (4-0-26-2) conceded four off the 19th over. There was time for Fletcher to be bowled for 3 by Naveen (3.4-0-24-4) and then Paterson went for a golden, caught at mid-wicket by Mulder. Notts 123 all out had lost by 47 runs and had been quite frankly humiliated.

Notts remain 7th in the table and the Foxes 5th, the visitors who still have a chance of qualifying will now be vastly strengthened by the arrival on loan of Joey Evison who will gain much experience at Grace Road in the next four weeks, experience he should have gained in the last fortnight playing for the Outlaws! Hopefully youth will be given a very belated chance against Derbyshire tomorrow, but don’t bet on it! MAG

Insert Some Vitality, Peter!

With one game in hand and five points adrift of fouth place Derbyshire, a 100% record from here-on doesn't mean we will qualify without Northants, Worcester and Lancashire doing us favour or two. Defeat to Foxes would signify the end however; meaning that's the end for this season and the end of an era!

Dan Christian has called for "improvement", well flippin' heck what a good idea! Trouble is, improvement in some departments will be impossible for some individuals - how many fielders are we actually trying to hide rather than set a field with to stop runs? Is it 3 or more?

I quoted this before, "time waits for no man", but knowing when is the right time to stand down one's self is another matter. That's when the advice from Peter Moores et al comes in and it just hasn't. It took too many games in Championship winless run of pre-lockdown seasons before PM saw the light and introduced some youth, energy and vitality into the regular eleven; are we back in the same intransigent position again, but in the shortest format this time?

This season is turning into a season of records, records that we don't want in the most part! Why did we elect to field first on Friday? Was it a case of do what the opposition least expect... crazy!

The bowling looks shot! If they're bowling to a plan, then they need to get  a new plan. Listening to Lancs TV yesterday and what was said on there about how to bowl at Steven Croft, well Notts just did the opposite and fed him short of length deliveries which he pulled to his heart's content! It might not have been that that lost us the game, but it hastened the defeat.

What is up with Jake Ball?

Why are we still loaning Zak Chappell out when he'd probably do a decent job for us, if Jake Ball is injured?

In the era of openness on social media and the internet, Notts need to lift that shroud of secrecy that surrounds the news when things turn bad, because at the moment we're just being fed bland boring drivel of no substance. That's something else that can improve - have a word Dan!

Squad news: Secret Squirrel has obviously been kept in the dark about results, as he's released the same squad again; that is the eleven they play, plus Lyndon James, Sol Budinger and Ben Slater

  1. I am finding this remarkable. Same xi on Sunday as were hammered on Friday. Meantime Chappell and Evison now out on loan. These 2 would not be saviours for our t20 campaign but they might help give respite to the current team.

I dont believe it is good either for our red ball team to be subjecting guys like Mullaney, Fletch and Paterson to this sort of t20 treatment. Think of their morale and self doubt - although I am sure they are all strong characters.

The last 2 home matches have seen a record total conceded and a record defeat prior to that.

I hope - and think actually - that we will win on Tuesday (just my luck as I am not sure I can get there), but if we do not then surely it is the time to press re-set, take the red ball players out of the firing line, add a 4th specialist batsman and - contradictory though it might sound - give guys like James and LPW a go

The loan news on Evison has really astonished me I must say.

  2. Yes Jimmy G I found that news surprising also. And I completely agree with Mark Stevenson also
I guess with red ball who would you drop? Lyndon James and it would be harsh but surely Joey, playing for the stiffs today so we assume reasonably fit, should surely come into the Dads Army T20 side ?
It makes you wonder what sway DC has in these matters as I’m sure he gets the side he wants and does he even really know Joey that much ?
I think Dads Army will win tomorrow as our batting will still fire and win some games on its own. Perhaps cautious Pete and DC are waiting untill we can’t qualify untill they go with the future?

  3. Time it seems has caught up with a lot of the Notts white ball team, DC has the look if someone who is playing his final season for Notts, He certainly owes us nothing and would leave i'm sure with our thanks for services rendered over the last few seasons, Our red ball captain is another who seems to playing more from memory during recent fixtures , One of Mull strongest skills in limited over matches was his bowling, Take that away from him and you would question whether he is worth his place purely as a batsmen.

Whilst not the best mover in the field Samit still offers plenty to his team, His bowling whilst not always as effective as before does add to the balance of the team.

Batting wise Notts are blowing hot and cold , Consistency is something that seems to have deserted the team at the present, Not that the management have much room for ringing the changes batting wise.

    Who to bring in ?

There is certainly a case for trying to fit Lyndon and LPW into the side , Young and energetic they would certainly improve the fielding, Batting wise,

  4. How many members will be refused entry into the members' pavilion tonght because they don't have a ticket for a seat infront of the pavilion? Asking for a friend.

  5. Space invaders! Lol.
There was a time, 40 years ago where people ,some people, I wasn’t one of them , used to queue up to go on it! Bit like today’s pre booking system.

  6. The sound of chickens coming home to roost tonight.
With low crowd and Dad's Army surrendering.
Feel sorry for members and supporters, not management. If you load a gun, point it at your own head and pull the trigger, then...........

  7. Average bowling, poor fielding and dreadful batting. Sigh.

  8. I've got my microscope out, trying to find any positives to take away from the inept display this evening...

Do we need a specialist T20 coach for next season, Peter Moores doesn't have a clue?

  9. I believe we said goodbye to several players tonight unless they hang on until the group stages end.

  13. I had a quick look at the admission prices yesterday. It’s not cheap anymore I don’t think. When it was a tenner the price was right for the day tripper to”come on down “

  14. Didn't even bother making the 50 mile round trip tonight. Notts just seem to lack ambition. Same old, same old.
Other teams have adapted and recruited younger, fitter and more motivated players. Its like time has stood still at TB.
With the reserved seat debacle and continued poor performances, this could well be the end of our three annual memberships.

    1. Will not be attending T20 again this campaign. The fielding is a constant embarrisment and no better than the small children playing on the outfield before the start. Bowling lazy. Batting thoughtless. 3 players at least should be dropped and younger eager lads bought in.

  15. First of all - thanks to MAGS /HBD for their detailed reports of the matches- which also have an extra vital ingredient - HUMOUR .
Carrying on in this vein , after witnessing the pain of last nights sad Notts defeat I thought of the Dads Army characters in the current team .
    Captain Christian
    Sergeant Mullaney
    Corporal Carter
    Private Fletcher
    Stupid Boy Harrison
    Spiv Hales
The rest of the team ( sorry - platoon) playing like Mrs Fox batting and bowling in a pinny.
Surely things can only get better - starting tomorrow night at TB against arch rivals Derby .
Surely there will be at least three team changes ? What have Notts got to lose ? Quarter final qualification is now almost a lost cause
Just one or two general observations in no particular order or importance .
The new advanced reserve seating system is having an effect on Blast attendances .The fans said it would . But no doubt the Commercial Dept regard it as a superb success even though the crowds overall are massively down at TB for Blast matches . Apart from non-paying Members how many spectators actually paid to go in last night ? 2,000?

Coach Peter Moores and son Tom Moores - IS Tom an automatic selection no matter how many times he fails ? Can Peter Moores actually bring himself drop his son from the team ? Why promote him to batting at No 4 ? What is the reasoning behind this ? Anyone know?

Advice to over excited host Colin Hazlewood . Tone it down a bit - you are making yourself look increasingly foolish . Give the spectators a bit of credit for possessing an I. Q.Going around each stand in turn asking for maximum noise is an insult to all those in the stands .Drop it - its had its day .It was ok for the first couple of times - but NO MORE PLEASE !

Sweet Caroline - oh dear ! How BORING that has become along with other so called sing- a -long bits and pieces . There are hundreds of musical anthems out there - can we have some fresh ones please before we all glaze over and drop to sleep .

The in- ground catering units . The prices are a joke even allowing for the current inflation rate .Could the owner of the mobile fish n chip mobile van please change the cooking oil ? The soggy portion I had last Friday left a nasty taste in the mouth besides a hole in my wallet (credit card naturally)

Why can we still not use actual cash in the ground itself ? What is the reason . Surely its still not covid related ? Its very hard for many people to keep track of their actual spending when just using credit cards . With cash in your pocket you know exactly where you are .

On Blast nights there is a general feeling of being watched all the time - just in case you might want to change seats to avoid the hot sun or unpleasant spectators . There are now far too many stewards in Yellow vests , Orange Vests , Green Jackets etc . Are Notts catering for crowds of 50,000 plus per Blast match ? The same with some alcohol outlets on the ground . The Smith Cooper stand has a giant long bar at the back staffed by over 30 folk poring out endless pints for customers who arent there . Rows of pints of beer and lager just standing there ,slowly getting warm and open to the elements and flying insects . This level of service for a pint costing an amazing £5.50 plus £1 glass deposit .

Sorry to be so negative on so many different levels .
I have been a supporter of Notts CCC since the barmy days of Sir Garfield .I know we all have to move with the times but ....................

    1. I hope you've been filling in those customer surveys that NCCC email you. Can't agree more, the Colin Show is tired and tedious now, much like Notts' performances have been this year. As the person sat next to me during one of our earlier defeats said, "the music and routine hasn't changed in ten years or more". It's time for a change of host, routine, music and players.

    2. Phew. Sounds awful. I'm glad I've been boycotting because of the advanced ticket business.

    3. Don't understand the boycott.?

    4. Yeah I was a bit baffled by people boycotting these T20 matches yet they went on Friday, I was a bit confused as to why was Friday's game so special compared to the others.

  17. I don't really understand the problem. Can someone explain why it's such a big deal? I may be missing something here. A lot of the counties do the same.

    1. Members were told to book a seat in March for games in June, not knowing of personal circumstances three month hence, the weather and a multitude of variables that would influence where you might choose to sit on the day. If games had ever been at capacity you might understand it but they've only opened-up all the ground for T20 on a handful of occasions ever. The decision to change of system that had worked, was popular with members and Joe public alike, was made without consultation and against advice. Trent Bridge is bigger than Taunton or New Road where sell-outs occur.

As well as what Notts Viewer says. At the members forum, the way in which those against the reservation system were kind of dismissed as being doddering old dinosaurs that aren't tech savvy. They deliberately failed to consider any other view point beyond their edict. Lisa might smile but she's pig ignorant at times and she controls Jeff Moores like her puppet.

  18. If it needs freshening up on the pitch the” entertainment “ off it certainly does. Incidentally, it sounds a bit like col in the background at Wantage Road tonight.
I’d had of Neil diamond by the end of 1971 about the same time as I’d seen enough of Brian bolus.( Only joking he was a good player for the club, not sure he would of been suitable for 20/20 though! Brian bolus in the same sentence as t20 is not something you hear too often! )

  19. Thanks Notts viewer. But being a member myself I know you can book seats just before game if you wish and also change stand if you decide. Yes you need to send a email before the day but it can be done. It won't change now. I think a much bigger issue is the T20 team.
