Martin Emmerson Talking Balls This Time

This young man played for Nottinghamshire 2s [Harlan Grieg], yesterday.

Notts 2s are currently playing a semi-final at Arundel against Leicestershire

Sussex Statement

Following an ECB decision yesterday to deduct Sussex 2nd XI two match points, we have finished second in the Southern group and subsequently have not qualified for the Second Eleven T20 Finals Day.

The decision was made as both Mohammad Rizwan and Josh Philippe featured in the victory over Hampshire 2nd XI on 24th May 2022.

We are of course disappointed, however, we respect the decision of the ECB.

Unique Circumstances / Perfect Storm Peter

Cricinfo, happy with all things IPL, have given the decision to adopt Retire-Out tactics, as seen at Edgbaston on Sunday, their seal of approval. Worryingly, Peter Moores sees nothing wrong and "Dan on the bench" doesn't either, it would appear. Read here

Second Eleven T20 Final Tables

Best four teams qualify for the Finals Day at Arundel Castle on Thursday. With just four wins, Notts don't make the cut.

  1. Let’s have it said , it’s cheating plain and simple no excuses even if it is my beloved Nottinghamshire. It’s why many my age hated Leeds United, and we were saying it before the 44 days. Leeds never won half as much of they should of done because don revie was more bent on bending the rules.

I don't know what Leeds United have got to do with it, but if Peter Moores doesn't see anything wrong with it, then perhaps he's part of the problem!

  3. It’s impossible to say whether it helped the Bears win the game as we will never know but we can only presume it didn’t hinder them if Braithwaite is not great against spin. But, then could we have changed the bowler also ? At what point is the cut off as to who bowls the over ?

The whole thing will get farcical if the laws are not changed to coaches and captains now looking into this side of the game. I would have hoped everyone else was against it and it may have been nipped in the bud(possibly) in that case and not deemed to be “in the spirit of the game” but there’s always one Trevor Chappell out there(underarm, grub hunter) so possibly not ?

I also agree the live streams should be paid for. All streams should be free to Members and the Blast/RLODC free for white ball season passes also but i think, now post-covid, a charge should be made to anyone else. This is purely my opinion, no doubt others will disagree but it has to be affecting attendances when you can merely sit in your armchair and just live stream whatever matches are being played on the day with no cost involved in doing this.

    1. Peter Moores says in the cricinfo article that Notts could have changed their bowler at that point - they chose not to or didn't realise what Brathwaite had done- Bears TV certainly didn't have a clue.

If you charge non-members to watch a live streams, how many viewers, newish / casual watches of cricket are going to pay to watch when there are so many other channels to choose from (and that's just on Youtube). If the live streams help to increase interest in the game, that's it doing its job done. Some counties' streaming offering hasn't progressed over the last two years and wouldn't be worth paying for. The on screen experience (even the best like Surrey or Middlesex) is nothing like the at the ground experience, so I doubt it is impacting attendances that much. Leicester has a sell out tonight, on the back of sensible ticket pricing - and there might lie the reason for lost attendees at Trent Bridge, that and the cooler weather at a cooler time of year - two of which the counties went for in order to cash-in on the parasite franchise competition.

    3. I suspect there are numerous reasons for low attendances; live streaming probably is a not a big factor. Items such as scheduling home games in short periods, take Yorkshire for example, home to Notts on Monday and then home to Lancashire on Wednesday. If you were going to attend one of those games which would you pick? Scheduling of games is also a factor, playing on a Monday night, the day the kids go back to school. There is no pattern to fixtures with games on random days starting at random times. For evening games, travel to matches can be a factor especially in areas where public transport has been cut back. Some people will be put off by the 'match experience' but probably less of an issue this year with reduced attendances. The number of rules in place for attending games will also be a disincentive (book in advance, allocated seats, body / bag searches, cashless venues, restrictions on bringing in food etc.). Ticket prices are also on the increase especially if you consider the total price for a family of four and then add in things like in-ground purchases; even Trent Bridge now has premier seating in the Radcliffe Road middle tier with a surcharge. This year the tournament has started earlier in the season, the weather has not been great and unlike last year I have not seen much external advertising. Put all that together and you have multiple reasons why attendances are lower and particularly worrying as for a lot of counties as the T20 Blast is their major income stream aside from the ECB grants.

  4. The Somerset stream has been good when I’ve watched it .however it too has adverts and there was a “ special guest in the commentary box.” No not vic marks ( laughter like machine gun fire)but the MD of the club sponsor droning on about his company ! Proof that there’s no such thing as a free lunch.
I went round the streams again last night. Essex - unwatchable because of buffering.glamorgan - good , then it rained then the stream cut off before the conclusion of the game. Wantage road - decent for free .Grace road - similar.foxy .

  5. Good question. It depends on the package and the cost .( it may also depend on where you live other things such as personal health issues)sky comes at a cost but the quality of the product can’t really be denied. The vote winner for the streams is the county championship, for me.foxy .

    2. You are clearly asking me a direct and honest question that requires a yes or no answer.( I can’t go don’t know. )So , having taken a good long hard look at myself the answer ( sad I’ll admit) is ... yes . Foxy.

  6. Second XI T20 - Nick Welch (Leics) has scored a lot of runs in this comp (v Notts at least), why hasn't he been promoted to their first XI. The Zimbabwean doesn't appear to count as an Overseas, or is the ruling more complex than that?

  7. Back to the subject of "Unique" but as in "Seat Unique Riverside" and "Seat Unique Bristol": I had, in my ignorance, assumed a Seat Unique was a Spanish built car of the VAG people, not some fancy ticket touting business.
