FAB FIVE FLOP (AGAIN)AS LAZARUS HAS A RELAPSE
Mullaney and Christian fall short after (almost) climbing a mountain
No opportunity for retire-outs as Hales, Clarke, Duckett, Moores, Patel all fall inside eight overs
Notts slipped to their second consecutive T20 defeat at Headingldy last night as Yorkshire comfortably beat them by 23 runs in front of poor crowd of around 3000.Notts won the toss and inserted Yorkshire and recalled Fletcher for Pattinson. Fletcher had a poor night with the ball going for 51 off his four overs.
Carter (Football Stand End) conceded seven runs including a boundary from Lyth in the first over. Patel went for six in the second over. Lyth hit Ball for four through extra cover. Allen then hit Ball for four through fine leg and then two massive sixes over square leg. Next ball Allen (16) was plumb leg before to Ball, 34 for 1 after 3 overs. Lyth hit Carter for a straight four, 8 off the 4th over. Lyth (20) lost his off stump to Ball, 43 for 2. Willey hit Ball to the square leg ropes, 6 off the over. Brook hit Fletcher for four through long leg. Yorkshire 54 for two at the end of the powerplay.
Willey hit Harrison for six over deep square leg, 12 off the 7th over. Next ball, Brook hit Patel for 6 over square leg and then Willey hit Patel for six over mid wicket and then four through the covers, 19 off the 8th over. Mullaney (1 0 12 0) was hit for six and four by Brook off successive deliveries. Then Moores standing up to Mullaney let four byes through. Moores keeping has been mediocre throughout the tournament so far. Yorkshire 101 for 2 after 9 overs. Brook hit Fletcher for 6 over backward square leg and Willey hit Fletcher for 4 over square leg, 16 off a nine ball over which included three wides. Yorkshire 117 for 2 after 10 overs and looking in total command having faced some pretty poor bowling from Notts.
However, the Notts spin trio bowled well in the middle overs. Willey (34 off 19 balls) was caught at long off by Mullaney off Harrison, 119 for 3 in the 11th over which cost 5 runs. Willey and Brook had added 76 in 6 overs. Brook was yorked by Patel for 40 off 25 balls, 123 for 4. Three off the 12th over and seven off the 13th over bowled by Harrison. Carter returned for the 14th conceding seven. Harrison finished with excellent figures of 4 0 27 1. Yorkshire 143 for 4 off 15 overs. Ex-Notts man Will Fraine was struggling against the twirlers
Tattersall hit Carter (4 0 34 0) for six and four over square leg, 12 off Carter's last over, Tattersall then launched Patel (4 0 39 1) for six over long on, 12 off the over including a bye. Tattersall scooped Fletcher for 4 and Fraine repeated the shot, 17 off the over including a no ball. Fraine (19 off 20 balls) holed out to Duckett on the mid wicket ropes off Ball (3 0 29 3), 188 for 5, six off the 19th over. Thompson hit Fletcher (4 0 51 0) for 6 over mid wicket. Yorkshire closed on 202 for 5, Tattersall 48 not out off 30 balls and Thompson 9 not out. With Christian seemingly unfit to bowl and Mullaney not the force he was with the ball, there is a lot of pressure on the Notts seamers to produce, unfortunately they have so far lacked consistency.
Notts were chasing an over par target and much depended on Hales. After Clarke got a single off the first ball of the innings, Hales was bowled by Willey (Football Stand End)for a golden duck. Ben Duckett hit successive fours off Willey a straight drive followed by a square cut, nine off the first over. Clarke (5) was strangled down the legside as departed caught Tattersall bowled by left arm seamer Dominic Drakes, 14 for 2. Clarke and Duckett have yet to fire in this year's tournament scoring totals of 89 and 96 runs in their 6 respective innings.
Patel dragged on his first delivery on to his leg stump, Drakes, son of former Notts overseas star Vasbert, had taken two in two deliveries. Mullaney left the hat trick ball. Five off the second over. Mullaney cover drove Willey for four but only five runs were taken from the third over. Mullaney hit Drakes to the third man boundary and guided him for 4 through the vacant slip cordon, Notts 30 for 3 off 4 overs. Revis was introduced and Duckett hit his first delivery for four through mid wicket. Duckett (15) skied a slower ball from Revis into orbit, keeper Tattersall taking the catch, 34 for 4. The game was over as a contest, Seven off the fifth over. Willey bowled the last over of the powerplay, Notts 40 for 4 after six overs.
Mullaney hit Thompson for an offside boundary, 10 off the 7th over. Moores (7) swept Rashid's first ball to Drakes at short fine leg, 50 for 5 after 7.1 overs. Christian joined Mullaney and put a coat of respectability on the Notts reply by adding 114 for the 6th wicket in 10.5 overs. This broke the club record partnership for the 6th wicket which was an unbroken stand of 73 between Christian and Billy Root versus Derbyshire at Trent Bridge in 2018.
Christian hit Rashid to deep extra cover boundary, six off the over. Shutt conceded four off his first over. Christian hit Rashid for six over extra cover. Mullaney edged the leg spinner for four, 12 off the 10th over.
Mullaney hit Revis for 6 over fine leg and then hit him for a straight four, 14 off the 11th over. Mullaney glided Thompson for four through third man, nine off the 12th over. Christian hit Shutt for 6 over long on to bring up the 50 partnership. Mullaney got to his 50 off 31 balls with a six over square leg off Shutt, 17 off the over. Only Mullaney's third T20 fifty.
Christian smashed Rashid for a straight six, 12 off the 14th over. Christian hit Thompson for 4 through mid wicket and Mullaney square cut him to the boundary ropes. Notts 136 for 5 off 15 overs, needing a very distant 67 off 5 overs.
Willey (4 0 26 1) returned, this time from the Kirkstall Lane End and was glanced for four through third man by Mullaney, nine off the over.
The 100 partnership was achieved via a six over square leg off Drakes, 11 off the 17th over. Christian got to his 50 off 31 balls with a straight four off Thompson. Mullaney departed caught on the point ropes by Allen off Thompson (4 0 40 1) for a T20 best of 79 off 46 balls (9x4,3x6), 164 for 6 off 18 overs. Christian going for a legside six was bowled by Drakes (4 0 31 3) for 56 off 35 balls(3x4,3x6) , 166 for 7. Carter hit Revis (3 0 31 1) for six over mid wicket in the last over as Notts closed on 179 for 7 off their 20 overs with Carter on 12 and Harrison on 1. Despite the entertaining 6th wicket stand the result had never been in doubt after Notts had lost 4 wickets in the powerplay.
Will Notts still stick to the same very experienced team or will they be brave and inject some youthful enthusiasm and athletism into a line up which has been together for too long? The team as it stands at present is not good enough to challenge for the title. MAG
Check it out for yourself. In the frame after this one, the ball pops-up and a gloved finger appears underneath. Clarke knew it wasn't a clean take but the square-leg umpire said otherwise and the umpire behind the stumps can't see as Drakes is running on the wicket. |
Jimmy Pattinson has been retired out of the squad traveling to Leeds for this evening tussle between the Vikings and the Outlaws, but in a revolving door of "Pattos", Dane Paterson does return to the squad.
Secret Squirrel's merry men are:
I am also completely against these tactical retirements we saw last night. It is obviously within the rules but completely 100% against the spirit of the game which sets cricket apart from other sports. I suspect Farbrace&Co picked it up from the IPL where, apparently, it has been done before.
ReplyDeleteIf Braithwaite is not great against leg-spin, then don’t sign him for franchise cricket, plain and simple.
I am also disappointed we stooped to their level with Patel, id have rather lost fair and square and then ‘gone to town’ over their antics.
But this is not the reason we lost the game.
Hales and Duckett had won the game with their brilliant blitz and if Moores was a better player, we could still have won the game.
D.C. playing as a batter only in the twilight of his career ? Is he really good enough for that role ? I don’t think its hard to captain a side in this slogfest form of the game.
Didn’t think Patto would play this format full stop. We all realise he’s lost his real pace(obviously) but surely he’s got more variations than he’s showed so far, because he’ll go round the park if he hasn’t and what is Mullaney’s role in the team thesedays ?
Cant be too critical of an 8 over slog, a pure lottery game in many ways but “Dad’s Army” is starting to show cracks in the team.
Surely an out of form Joe Clarke is overdue and although not easy do we not have to get Lord Budinger integrated somehow as another batting option in the PP ?
Dunno if Fletch is not 100% or how long DC cannot bowl for as Notts Pravda doesn’t like to mention these, nasty, negative aspects but do note the Great Dane has been added to the squad for tonight, who also has gone the distance in the few t20 games he’s played for us. But must be a better option than the Patto of 2022 who should be saved for red ball/50 over in my opinion
Can we bend the rules even further….and not play our wicketkeeper ?
ReplyDeleteThis live stream is like watching Benny Hill show in the 80s. Surely a test ground can do better? Assume Drakes is son of Vasbert Drakes who did so well for us ?
ReplyDeleteHe is indeed the son of VC Drakes
DeleteThe live stream and camera work was poor . There is a big variance on quality of the images across the counties. Cricket wise, left themselves too much to do.foxy.
ReplyDeleteThe live stream is a free service, you cannot expect a good quality product. They need to go behind a pay wall to ensure that more people attend the matches
DeleteFair point. The oval( which already has some adverts,)lords and Trent Bridge are the more polished ones I’ve seen. Perhaps the pay wall is what is coming down the line.foxy.
DeleteA paywall would kill the audience figures stone dead and is not a way to grow interest in cricket.
DeleteApart from the continued inconsistency from our top order batsman, particularly Clarke, Notts also lack a cutting edge opening bowler. Neither Pattinson or Paterson, look comfortable in this format or the game and Dan Christian is surely in his final season for the club.
ReplyDeleteIn addition to his average wicket keeping capabilities, Tom Moores is not accomplished enough as a batsman, to feature in the top 6 positions.
Notts will now have to either bat first when winning the toss, or make some line up changes, or both, to stand any chance of progressing further in this competition.
With all these analysts knocking about, have Notts been sussed, are we too predictable?
ReplyDeleteyes
DeleteSo, is this finally the year that Dads Army need refreshing ? Are we now just too predictable ?
DeleteWho do you think you are kidding Mr Moores, if you think old Notts can win.Apolologies, all of this Dads Army talk, has got me singing the old theme tune.
ReplyDeleteI went back over the scorebooks for the two innings in this game in the assumption that Yorkshire scored far more runned twos (because they were so much younger etc etc) than Notts but that wasn't really the case - Yorks 12 / Notts 10. The biggest difference surprise surprise was the number of extras given away Yorks 4 / Notts 11.
ReplyDeleteMullaney did score 15 singles and Christian 20 singles however - if half of those singles were doubled up into 2s and we conceded less extras we would have won this game without having to match their six hitting, Yorks 10 Notts 7.
Games are full of what ifs but one thing is clear from the evidence of just this week: When Hales and /or Clarke get out in the first over, we suffer down the line. Both have had golden ducks in just this week. When both remain intact, we win. It doesn't take a cricket analyst or rocket scientist to work out what we need to do.
