Norfolk 50 Over Friendly at Horsford CC No Result

NO RESULT

Notts Royal London warm up fixture at Manor Park turned into a damp squib with only 90 balls bowled before being abandoned at 1445 with the sun shining brightly.

The ground situated near Norwich Airport is 4 miles north of the City covered a large playing area. Indeed, Horsford CC have two pitches to call upon. Down one side were a row mini tents which were reminiscent of those very early photos from the 1850s during the Crimean War. Entering the Pavilion, we could hear in deep conversation the dulcet tones of “My Dear Old Thing” Henry Blofeld who was Norfolk CCC’s guest of the day.

Heavy early morning rain had landed in Norwich and they were stories suggesting that water had seeped through the covers and caused a wet patch on the pitch. Notts won the toss the elected to bat and wIth Evison having rode on his White Horse and James still unable to bowl it was perhaps appropriate that on the day of rest, Chappell returned to line-up with right-arm quickie James Hayes also making the starting eleven.

The start was delayed 30 minutes and commenced at 1130 with the match a 46 over contest. There was probably around 500 in attendance with about 30 or so Notts supporters. After a leg bye to Slater, Budinger (0) fell to the second delivery caught by keeper Tom New off Andrew Hanby (City End) the ball moving away, 1 for 1. The second over was bowled by former Notts Academy pupil Callum Metcalf. Hameed (8) fell in Hanby's second over, also caught behind, 11 for 2. The early stages of the contest were played in intermittent drizzle. In the 8th over, Slater (21) played on via his elbow from a rising delivery from Metcalf, 36 for 3. Notts stood at 45 for 3 after 9 overs at the end of the powerplay. Rain stopped play at 1211 with Notts 45 for 3 off 9.1 overs.

Play recommenced at 1231 as a 44 over contest. Hanby took 2 for 25 off his five over spell and was replaced by Ben Wilcox who is currently on the Notts Academy. Montgomery and James were steadily accumulating runs when a very heavy shower stopped play at 1251 with Notts 68 for 3 off 15 overs with Montgomery on 24 and James on 11. The deluge lasted 15 minutes and then an early lunch was called, an inspection took place at 1400 hours but with light rain falling umpires Watts and Widdup returned to the Pavilion. The umpires were clearly concerned about a wet patch near the pitch and they pulled the plug at 1445, the match being the only one of 18 National Counties Showcase games today not to be completed.

Not a game to linger in the memory and Notts gained little from it. MAG

TB streaming are now streaming from deepest Norfolk - and it lasted less time than Sol Budinger who was out in the first over.

Yes the Norfolk skipper is Sutton in Ashfield born Tom New, formerly of Leicestershire and Derbyshire

A bit wet overnight in the East Midlands, clouds were said to be heading east...

Pitch inspection at 10.45

The rain clouds over Notts remain; a last minute meeting between Joey Evison with just Newell and Moores failed to convince Joey that opportunities would arise to cement a first eleven spot in the nearer future (Notts squad being as strong as it is), prior to the announcement yesterday. He had been tempted away and given assurances by Kent via his meddling agent (in all likelihood). They parted on good terms, I am told.

You only get one shot at life, so you have to grab your opportunities when they show-up. A bird in the hand, etc etc.

First team cricket promises at Kent vs  Pie in the Sky ifs and maybes from Notts management

I am also told that Joey is "distraught" having to leave Notts.

Good luck to Joey, and I'm sure we'd welcome him back in three years time.

30/07

So Joey won't be playing for Notts in the ODC this year, going on loan to Kent before his permanent move at the end of the season.

No announced squad, 12 hours ahead of the toss.

As we get started on the 39 day hiatus of the Championship, cricket looks to fill some of the void, minus many of the its established players who have gone of to fill their pockets with Sky's wonga in the exhibition performances that accompany those DJ sets at the Test grounds, with some 50 over limited over cricket.

Nottinghamshire start this over a month-long interlude with a trek to Norwich to play Norfolk in a 50 over non-list A friendly, in preparation for the One Day Cup.

With the usual suspects all not available, the Notts squad will be interesting to learn; will James Pattinson and Dane Paterson make the journey for instance? Has Joey Evison talked himself out of the Notts door and out of this squad?

Joey, it is understood, has been offered a new contract by Notts as Notts want to invest in Joey Evison for at least three more years, but Joey appears to want guarantees about being picked for the first eleven. If rumours are correct, Kent it appears are able and willing to make those guarantees [Evening Standard]. Of the emerging next generation currently in the Notts squad, Joey Evison it can be argued, is the brightest star of hope for the future, the most talented and gifted with a sounder technique than all of the great prospects that we have, and that includes Lyndon James and Liam Patterson-White who being slightly older have made the break-through into the first eleven and have cemented their places.

If it's not too late, Peter Moores, Mick Newell and Steven Mullaney should get off the arses and negotiate with young Joey, persuade him that in the longer term he would be better off in the Notts ranks and to ignore those agents whose only true objective is to line their own pockets and players moving counties is good for business. I notice that Matt Milnes has agreed to leave Kent and will switch to Yorkshire in 2023, so obviously the grass of Kent isn't green enough for Matt anymore...

Whoever is responsible for the Player Pathway at Nottinghamshire, it used to be Mick Newell, needs to find that key again, the key to the gate at the end of the pathway that is. At the moment the first eleven is a closed-shop whilst we have two overseas players, expensive acquirements from other counties and a need to play three wicketkeepers, where one has the gloves but offers little with the bat. The rotation of bowlers isn't really happening and the eleven effectively picks itself as a result.

Back to this game; half of the first eleven have gone away for the next month so others will get a turn in the Royal London One Day Cup, but who will be the lucky ones?

  1. Joeys departure is on the club website now. This is something of a bombshell, at first I thought it was probably on loan, then a rumour but it’s not.It must be what he wants and hope he does well.as for Matt milnes, how many times would he of played for the Notts first team over the last 3 years?

  2. Everytime Notts have played recently I have looked at the team in the vain hope there would be some rotation of the squad especially amongst the bowlers , Just what was the point of having so many if you have no intention of playing them

Do we really want to lose the likes of Hutton (again)Pettman and in the spinning department Harrison and Montgomery?

One thing is for certain if the present policy continues Joey Evisons departure will be far from the last.

You have been warned Notts ignore it and suffer the consequences

  3. Not really the thread for this but Phil Cooper sent me this on Twitter: Welbeck v Mansfield Hosiery Mills yesterday (Notts CB div2). Very light rain and both sides wanted to play, but the umpires held the game up against their wishes. 33 overs with players looking to have a game after a weeks work. Not good enough.

  4. Well another young player with potential leaves us. Apparently he has turned down a decent contract but has decided to go to pasture new. Is it because of a lack of first team playing time. Does he have ambition? Is it about time the powers that be stop using the preprinted team sheet. Notts as a team are of an age we need to give younger guys a chance. The older players may appreciate younger legs. Why stay at Notts if your never picked. Change of a squad should never be sudden but a gradual thing. Why bring in players when we have players leaving for a chance to play. Give our youth a chance.

  6. IF Evison has become so head strong and has demanded to be in the first team then perhaps we are better off without him at the end of the day ?He’s got massive potential but that’s it at the minute he’s certainly no Sobers, Botham or Flintoff at this very moment
But I suspect, in reality, it’s more of a man-management situation by the Notts hierarchy and the situation has suddenly crept up on them and due to their complacency, probably taken then completely by surprise?
I can see why Evison was unhappy as there are players in the team that appear to be un-droppable come what may. The Head coach’s own son would appear to be top of this particular list ?

On the basis the current DoC, openly admits he never coaches the squad these days, is not one of his main roles and responsibilities player-man management along with the Head Coach also ? So to lose Wood, Milnes and now Evison you have to start asking questions with their effectiveness in this department surely?
