Day 3
POST-LUNCH SUSSEX COLLAPSE HANDS NOTTS COMFORTABLE, DESERVED WIN
Notts remain top of the table after a convincing 256 run over Sussex who managed to lose eight wickets in 25.3 overs after lunch with the match being completed before tea at 1524.
Notts innings only lasted a further 25 balls this morning. The new ball was taken immediately by Sussex, Robinson bowling the 81st over. Pattinson was dropped on 20 by Carter diving to his right off Currie (Radcliffe Road End). Next ball, Patterson-White (32) lost his off stump to Currie, 289 for 8 in the 82nd over. Fletcher lasted 6 deliveries before being leg before to Robinson for a duck, 290 for 9. Pattinson hit successive fours off Currie to bring up the 300. Pattinson (31) skied Robinson to Pujara in the covers. Notts 301 all out off 84.1 overs with Robinson (5 for 60) very much the stand out performer. Robinson finished with match figures of 9 for 104.
Sussex required 399 to win off a minimum of 185 overs. In the fifth over, left hander Clark (5) edged Fletcher to Moores who took the catch low down to his left, 13 for 1. After a 5 over spell from the Pavilion End from Pattinson, Dane Paterson came on. Pattinson changed ends as Fletcher's initial seven over spell came to an end. Orr and Hudson-Prentice kept playing and missing against the unlucky Paterson but it was Pattinson that made the breakthrough as Orr (34) top edged an attempted pull shot from a short ball and Slater took the catch running from his position at short leg, 52 for 2 in the 19th over. Sussex got to lunch on 66 for 2 off 22 overs with Hudson-Prentice on 13 and Pujara on 9.
Fletcher and Paterson shared the bowling straight after lunch and it was Paterson who picked up a much-deserved scalp as Hudson-Prentice (17) edged him to Moores, 72 for 3 in the 24th over. Mullaney replaced Paterson in the 30th over. In the following over, Fletcher dismissed Carter (13) strangled down the legside, 89 for 4. Sussex got to their 100 via a four through mid-wicket by Coles off Fletcher in the 33rd over. Fletcher made way for Mullaney in the 35th over, the captain having switched ends to enable Pattinson to return. The fifth wicket was another strangle, Pattinson the bowler, Coles (12) the batsman ; the fourth catch of the innings for Moores, 108 for 5 after 38 overs. In his following over, Pattinson detonated Lenham's stumps, the youngster out for a duck, 118 for 6. Robinson (0) fell in the next over via a spectacular diving catch by Fletcher at mid-off, Mullaney the bowler, 119 for 7 in the 41st over. Patterson-White came on for Mullaney and with Pujara looking to retain the strike off the last ball of the over, he pushed the ball to James at square leg and set off to run but changed his mind, an almighty mix up led to Karvelas (4) being run out via a direct hit by James, 130 for 8 after 45 overs. Hunt lasted four balls before being dismissed plumb leg before for 0, 130 for 9. Pujara hit three fours off Patterson-White's third over before Paterson delivered the coup de grace having Currie palpably leg before for a 5-ball duck. Pujara left undefeated on 46 off 75 balls (7x4). Sussex 142 all out off 47.3 overs, Paterson with figures of (12.3 5 14 3) was well supported by Pattinson (3 for 47). Sussex had lost their last six wickets for 34 runs in 58 balls.
Poor Sussex probably had the best batsman (Pujara) and the best bowler (Robinson) in the contest, but the rest of their team comprised of inexperienced youngsters. The injured Alsop, Carson, Garton, Finn and Haines were badly missed. Notts took 20 points from the fixture and Sussex zero, their three bowling points taken away from them by a three-point deduction for poor over rate. Notts, who lead the table by 30 points, now have to wait 39 days for their next championship game, a home contest against Leicestershire. MAG
Day 2
NOTTS BUILD LARGE LEAD
after a double 5-fer for the Pats that demolishes Sussex
Notts lead Sussex by 381 runs with three second innings wickets still standing after dominating the second day at Trent Bridge today.
Pattinson and Paterson opened the bowling on a sunny morning and in first five overs overnight pair Pujura and Lenham looked untroubled adding a further 26 runs to the overnight total. In the 40th over, Paterson had lynchpin Pujura leg before for 49, 120 for 6. This was the start of a collapse where Sussex were to lose their last five wickets for 23 runs in 5.4 overs. In the following over, Lenham (31) was leg before to a well-pitched up delivery from Pattinson, 128 for 7. In his following over, Pattinson got his fifth wicket when he had Robinson's (5) strangled down the legside, caught by Moores, 133 for 8. Hunt (0) lasted two balls before losing his off stump to Paterson, 138 for 9. Karvelas was the last man out leg before to Paterson for 5. Sussex 143 all out in 45.2 overs. Paterson (5 for 43) and Pattinson (5 for 56) had been too good to a Sussex batting card which was too reliant on Pujura. Only three batsmen made double figures and the sixth stand of 71 between Pujura and Lenham accounted for half the eventual meagre total.
Robinson (Pavilion End) and Currie opened the bowling in the Notts second innings. Slater and Hameed looked in no trouble but in the 7th over Slater (20) threw his wicket away hooking Robinson straight to Currie at long, this was a cue for a mini-collapse, three wickets falling in 11 balls. Two balls later, Duckett was caught behind by Carter off Robinson for a duck, 28 for 2 after 7 overs. Clarke lasted three balls before falling leg before to Robinson for 0, 40 for 3 in the 9th over. Clarke has the habit of moving about his crease early in his innings, making him a prime candidate for leg befores or caught behinds, he remains frustratingly an unfulfilled talent in red ball cricket. Karvelas replaced Currie in the 10th over. Just before lunch Currie was given a single over from the Pavilion End. Notts were 49 for 3 off 14 overs at lunch with Hameed on 18 and James on 6, with a lead of 146.
Hameed and James dominated the middle session as their fourth wicket stand eventually reached 138. Robinson and Karvelas were bowling in tandem immediately after lunch. In the 21st over, Hunt replaced Robinson from the Pavilion End. The 50 partnership between Hameed and James was achieved in 89 balls via a four through mid-wicket by Hameed off Karvelas. Hameed got to his 50 off 71 balls via four through square leg from Currie. Notts got to 100 in the 27th over. The runs were flowing freely and Pujura had to return to Ollie Robinson for the 32nd over. The 100 partnership between Hameed and James was achieved in 153 balls with a four for James off Robinson. A pulled four for James off Karvelas brought him his 50 off 103 balls. Hunt made the breakthrough having Hameed (94 off 115 balls, 15x4) caught behind by Carter, 178 for 4 in the 42nd over. The 4th wicket had added 138 in 33 overs. Another fine knock from Hameed. Mullaney hit Hunt for 6 over square leg. A well-pitched up delivery from Hunt saw James’s leg before for 56 (off 113 balls, 7x4), 189 for 5 in the 46th over. Not for the first time, James had got Notts out of a mini crisis with a calm, mature, sensible knock. Notts got to tea on 201 for 5 off 50 overs with Mullaney on 10 and Moores on 6.
Mullaney and Moores got a bit bogged down at the start of the third session, as Robinson bowled an excellent 5 over spell for 11, without somehow picking up a deserved fourth wicket. Throughout he has looked a class apart from the inexperienced and green Sussex attack. Moores (6) poor form with the bat continued when he was out in the third over after tea, caught behind by Carter off Currie, 202 for 6 in the 53rd over. Slow left-armer Coles came on and in his second over had Mullaney leg before for 42, 250 for 7 in the 68th over. Another valuable knock from the skipper who has scored a total of 304 runs in 3 innings against The Martlets in 2022.
Leg-spinner Lenham was introduced into attack as Sussex had to speed up their over rate which had stood at minus 6 at the tea interval. Patterson-White (30*) and Pattinson (20*) batted out time sensibly dealing mainly in singles. With Notts standing at 284 for 7 off 80 overs and with the floodlights beaming brightly Sussex wanted to take the new ball with two overs remaining. The umpires consulted and wisely took the players off for bad light. Unlike all the other surfaces we have seen at Trent Bridge this season, the surface has not improved, indeed it is exhibiting signs of uneven bounce from both ends. Robinson with the new ball should soon knock out the Notts tail, but with a lead of 381 and Sussex having a flimsy batting card, Notts should wrap up the game tomorrow, Pujura permitting.MAG
Day 1
RETURNING ROBINSON ENSURES SUSSEX MAKE THE MOST OF TOSS WIN
Before Pattinson blasts Notts back into the contest
Sussex trail by 146 runs with five first innings wickets standing after 15 wickets fell on the first day at Trent Bridge. On a cloudy dank morning Notts were inserted on a green pitch with an extremely short boundary on the Bridgford Road side. Sussex had Ollie Robinson back in the line-up after a long absence and Hudson-Prentice making his first-class return to Sussex after his long-standing back problem Notts named an unchanged eleven.
Robinson (Pavilion End) and Currie opened the bowling. In the 3rd over, Hameed (5) shouldered arms to Robinson and lost his off stump,15 for one after 6 overs. In the 10th over, Duckett (7) chipped Robinson straight to Coles at backward square leg, 37 for 2. Clarke (1) was all at sea throughout his brief innings, it was no surprise when he became Robinson's third victim edging him through to keeper Carter, 41 for 3. Hunt (Radcliffe Road End) and Karvelas replaced Currie and Robinson in the 14th and 15th overs respectively. In the 15th over, Notts got to 50 via an off side by James off Karvelas. In the 17th over, Slater pulled Karvelas for six over long leg. James was dropped on seven by Clark at second slip off Karvelas. In his next over, the South African got his revenge as James (7) slashed him once again outside off stump as this time Clark took the catch, 75 for 4 in the 21st over. Slater got to his 50 off 86 balls with a single off Hunt. Clark bowled the last over before lunch, Notts 87 for 4 off 25 overs at the interval with Slater on 50 and Mullaney on 8. Slater had batted well and Robinson in his comeback was proving a handful in helpful conditions.
Robinson came back straight after lunch and in his second over bowled Slater for 55 (off 108 balls; 8x4, 1x6) the ball moving back in, 102 for 5 in the 31st over. The cloudy morning had been replaced by bright skies. Karvelas came on for Robinson and had Mullaney dropped on 26 by Clark at second slip, an expensive drop. Moores (10) was out to terrible waft outside off stump against Hunt, Moores' feet cemented to the floor, Carter taking the catch, 141 for 6 in the 40th over. Mullaney pulled Hunt for six. Patterson-White (0) also fell to a poor shot slashing Karvelas to Clark to second slip, 152 for 7 in the 43rd over. Pattinson joined his captain and the pair built the only substantial stand of the innings adding 65 runs in 15 overs.
Robinson switched to the Radcliffe Road End and an offside three by Mullaney off him saw the captain to his 50 off 75 balls. Mullaney was dropped on 53 by Carter off Clark, a sitter, the second let off for the skipper. Slow left armer Coles came on from the Radcliffe Road End and a swept four from Mullaney off his first delivery saw Notts to their only batting point, a further two fours off the over by Pattinson meant his sole over went for 13. He was immediately replaced and Currie returned and had Pattinson (39 off 56 balls; 7x4) caught at second slip by Clark, 217 for 8 in the 58th over. Mullaney (70 off 109 balls, 8x4, 2x6) pulled Currie for 6 over square leg but was out next ball adjudged leg before way down the pitch to a delivery going down leg side, 228 for 9. Paterson covered drove his first ball for four. Paterson was last man to fall caught behind by Carter off Currie for 11. Notts 240 all out off 61.4 overs. Sussex having won the toss in favourable conditions had cashed in with Robinson leading the way with 4-44 and novices Currie (3-58) and Karvelas (2-42) backing up. Despite Sussex spilling three catches and the helpful conditions before lunch, this was a poor batting effort from Notts with far too many batsmen throwing their wickets away and the score was inflated somewhat by 30 extras, including nine byes as Carter had an indifferent day behind the stumps. Tea was taken between the innings.
Fletcher (Pavilion End) and Pattinson opened the bowling and initially opening pair Orr and Clark looked relatively comfortable, but Sussex then dramatically lost five wickets in 10 overs as the brisk Pattinson and Paterson found their rhythm. In the 6th over, Clark was leg before to Pattinson for 8, 24 for 1. Paterson replaced Pattinson and his second over had removed Hudson-Prentice’s off stump for 1, 36 for 2 in the 10th over. Pattinson returned from the Radcliffe Road End, replacing Fletcher with his first ball he bowled Orr (34), who lost his off stump, 44 for 3 in the 13th over. Carter lasted 4 balls before departing plumb leg before to Pattinson for a duck. Coles lasted 9 balls before being caught by Duckett at second slip off Paterson, 49 for 5 off 16 overs. Notts looked well on top but after brilliant spells from Pattinson and Paterson, Fletcher and Mullaney replaced them. Young Archie Lenham joined Pujara and with the ball getting softer, batting got much easier as they added unbroken 45 runs in 18 overs. With the shadows lengthening Pattinson and Paterson returned for the last 6 overs but both batsmen were given too many deliveries they could leave. Sussex got to stumps at the ridiculous late time of 1909 on 94 for 5 off 34 with keyman Pujara on 34 and Lenham on 16. With Sussex having the advantage of batting last on a wicket that will only get easier, they are very much still in the contest. Pujara will be have to be removed early tomorrow and Notts will be certainly expected to bat far better in their second innings after that slap happy display today. MAG
Secret Squirrel has announced the same eleven as for the Derbyshire Sweaty Draw, plus Len and Monty.
Ben Slater
Enough of the draws, in a three horse race where there's only a pay out on the first two places, we need to start winning again, with the games after this one all in September. Notts don't win many games in September as a rule.
Does anyone remember James Pattinson being as daft as a brush in 2017, me neither? His most memorable attribute then was his lethal bowling, but now it's his fidgets, his strutting around and the random noises he makes. Those and the occasional quick ultra-wides! What is up with the lad? He's found his pace, he just needs to switch-on his radar now!
An interesting bit of ranting by Dave Griffin the Derbyshire photographer on his twitter account about County Cricket, pity KP, Andrew Strauss and the powers that be probably wont even see it,.... or even understand the point he is making!! https://twitter.com/i/status/1547512967520198656
ReplyDeleteI’ve watched it anonymous, that’s for drawing it to my attention. In short , he speaks well, with knowledge and passion and he’s right. Foxy
DeleteI’m sure this will return to haunt me but there doesn’t look much batting there with Tom Alsop being ruled out also
ReplyDeleteThis is a game we really ought to target and not put out a Middlesex type of surface that was no good to anyone looking to force victory on that final Wednesday?
Finny Steve is being rested so, presumably, Ollie Robinson plays and again, presumably, Len/The Hit Man comes in on his usual rotation of games policy?
My early memories of Sussex are Imran Khan, Garth Le-Roux and I think a batsman called Paul Parker ?
Paul parker’s Son is a GP here in Nottingham. My wife worked with him about 15 years ago. Foxy.
DeleteOllie, Oli, Ali and Ari but definitely no Steve
ReplyDeleteCaptains’ name
DeleteInteresting to hear that. Maybe he might be at the match at some point ?
ReplyDeleteWouldn’t be surprised.i don’t know him but my wife spoke to him about cricket on a few occasions. He was on the local news talking about something medical about a year ago. (Dr. Parker that is not Paul Parker)
DeleteA fascinating day of County Cricket
DeleteBut with this the last match in July, at the ground and correct if wrong, but think 6 days of 31 use in August, why the match so "marginalised" pitch wise ?
A vintage day for Notts.
ReplyDeleteTo be fair, our keeper barely made a mistake.
Mull twice batting superbly in this match.
Hameed and James magnificent.
39 days? Ridiculous
