Budinger Breaking Not News

Nottinghamshire CCC redefining the word "news". A story known weeks ago, so is hardly new.

Nottinghamshire batter Sol Budinger has opted to part ways with the Green and Golds having signed a contract with Leicestershire.

The 23-year-old will join the Foxes on loan from today, before moving permanently at the conclusion of the 2022 season.

Budinger has made 17 List A appearances for Notts spanning two seasons on the professional staff, averaging 32.68, with a top score of 89 against Gloucestershire. He has also appeared nine times in the Vitality Blast, with a best of 24 and an average of 13.71.

“We pride ourselves on creating opportunities for our players on and off the field, and Sol has benefited from that environment during his time at the club,” said Nottinghamshire Head Coach Peter Moores.

“He has developed year-on-year since joining us at 18, which is both a credit to him and the support staff around him. It’s always sad to see a player of his potential move on, though we also understand his desire to play more first team cricket.

“We have focussed in recent years on building a strong squad which possesses the depth to be competitive in every format and maintains competition for places. Sol has had a big role to play in that squad effort and the exciting young talent we have at the club bodes well for the future.

“Whilst we would have liked for him to stay, we respect his decision and look forward to seeing how his game progresses in the coming years.”

Budinger Makes Foxes Move

12 September 2022

Leicestershire CCC is excited to announce the signing of top-order batsman Sol Budinger on a two-year deal from Nottinghamshire.

The 23-year-old arrives from Trent Bridge immediately, with a three-match loan preceding a permanent move next month.

Budinger, who comes straight into contention for debut against Durham at Uptonsteel County Ground, featured on 26 occasions for Notts since his debut in June last year, with 17 List-A and nine Vitality Blast appearances to his name.

Nine of his List-A matches came in this summer’s Royal London Cup, where the left-hander shone with 358 runs at an average of 44.75, buoyed by a strike rate of 142.06.

Such opportunities eventuated after successful showings across the formats at second team level. In this year’s SET20, Budinger averaged 23.5 striking at a formidable 164.9, while he smashed 114 off just 38 balls in his final appearance of the 2021 iteration.

Known for his attacking propensity, Budinger has also shown his ability when facing the red ball. He registered 645 runs at just under 38 in this summer’s Second Eleven Championship, best displaying his prowess with 151 from 143 deliveries against the Foxes during the second innings at Lady Bay in May.

Discussing his East Midlands switch, Budinger said: “The opportunity came up a few months ago, and it was too good to miss out on.

“Leicestershire is a great club with a great history, so I see it as the perfect place for me to really kick on and win some games alongside an exciting young team.”

Speaking about joining on loan and his ambitions, he added: “Hopefully I can add some valuable contributions to a few wins and kickstart some momentum for next year.”

“The team had fantastic T20 and 50-over campaigns, so hopefully we can continue to progress next year, get to a final, and win some silverware.”

LCCC Director of Cricket, Claude Henderson, commented: “We are delighted to welcome Sol to Leicestershire. He boasts a strong skillset, and we were incredibly impressed by both his hunger to improve and his determination to flourish across all three formats.”

Hassan Azad added to the Leicestershire squad.

11/09

Frustration from Leicestershire when they left out Hassan Azad from their squad against Durham in order to insert Budinger's name perhaps. But, are Notts dragging their feet?

07/09

Trent Bridge Heritage's Steve LeMottee even included Sol in his talk about Players crossing the border (playing for both Notts and our southern neighbours) at the rain assisted extended tea interval. The clubs remain mute..

06/09

Preceived wisdom has it that Notts/Leics will break this old news after the conclusion of the Championship game between the two counties currently being played. Budinger will then go on loan to Leicester for the rest of the season. We shall see, but if they do it will be another example of the weak leadership at the top of the Trent Bridge organisation following on from the news blackout on the lead-up to and departure of Jimmy Pattinson, the club not releasing news until the lad had gone back to Australia after supporters had been left wondering why he wasn't winning games for Notts Outlaws in the Royal London for 3 weeks previous.

30/08

Every ball counts, as they say in t'undr'd, but in Sol's case it was the only ball - a golden duck!

28/08

At least TrentBridge.co.uk are consistent - any news on Sol Budinger is ignored. Hidden in the BBC's news of the Big Bash overseas draftees, information that Sol Budinger will replace an injured Liam Livingstone at whatever Hundred franchise it is - Birmingham Do-dahs? [BBC draft]

27/08

MOORES and NEWELL DROP THE BALL AGAIN

Forget the cricket clubs: George Dobell announces that Sol Budinger is to join Leicestershire. The move can't be about salary, Leicestershire exist on a shoestring and ECB coupons, so it must be the lack of opportunities presented for first team cricket by the Peter Moores myopic, I'll only pick my favourites approach to selection that is the driving factor, AGAIN!

Sol has been instrumental in giving Notts good starts to innings in the One Day Cup this season (and last) and surely would have featured more prominently in next year's Blast, but not anymore for Notts alas. An exciting player and another disappointment for Nottinghamshire supporters now that the handful of spectators at Grace Road will get to see him clearing the ropes there rather than us at Trent Bridge Grantham.

CLARKE HAS TO UP HIS GAME

Joe Clarke really needs to start delivering on the all faith that Moores has staked on him. Nottinghamshire have already lost two players that would have been given opportunities if Clarke had been treated with some objectivity - Evison and now Budinger. He arrived with huge promise only to be hit by the iceberg of the infamous trial and hasn't been the same since - has he the ability to come back? How long do we have to wait? Notts are currently being short changed and the Welsh Firemen can't be very  illuminated either (judging by his stats). Ben Duckett was shown the same, undroppable faith but he is delivering and is now head and shoulders above the rest - the best batsman in Division Two this season by a country mile in my opinion - forget Masood, he couldn't deal with the Trent Bridge wicket, same as Pujara.

  1. So will Montgomery get to play in the 3 Championship matches, as he deserves to ?
Or is a 3rd one going to be lost to us ?

  2. Still recovering from the shock of losing arguably, our most talented cricketer coming through the system, since Samit Patel, in the form of Joey Evison, we are now being informed of Budinger's impending departure as well.

A club of Notts stature should not be losing players of this calibre to the likes of Kent and Leicestershire.

Mr Rocket man Newell, has again been caught sleeping at the wheel.
I suggest both he and Moores senior, both need rockets shoving up their proverbials.

Let's face it ,Evison should have been a regular for Notts, long before his departure, and Budinger should have been opening with Hales in the T20.

It is no use boasting about having an up and coming crop of talented young players, if you don't play them regularly. No doubt Schadendorf will be the next one through the exit door, and the talent drain which also includes Luke Wood and Matt Milnes, will be virtually completed.

Whatever happened to Peter Moores's happy tight knit group of cricketers.

  3. Surely like Evison, Lord Budinger would have had opportunities around the first team next season or is he now the latest to think he can’t force his way in with the Peter Moores ‘untouchables’ ?
Just cannot see the point in ploughing all the time, money & effort into producing home grown players if half of them leave you club. May as well go back to the days of Chequebook Mick and sign the ready made, seasoned pro like Sidebotham, Ealham, Lumb etc who will do a good job for you for the next 3-5 years or so and then just move on or retire.
Guess it’s a miracle both LPW and LJ have committed their futures to us ?
With all this bad news, Notts Pravda will be in meltdown shortly and will need some positive spin. Darren Stevens has been released by Kent and is only 46 he would fit the bill perfectly for us ?
Is it about time the Director of Cricket was pensioned off to his garden in West Bridgford and the Trent Rockets where his focus seems to be these days ?

  4. When you have been in the job, for what seems like an eternity, as far as Newell is concerned, you lose interest, motivation and more importantly, focus on the job in hand.
If he still has any interest, it would appear to be focused on the new money spinner, or to put it another way, the English version of baseball.
Maybe, we should rename him the Director of Rockets.
In my opinion, he should be fired into infinity and beyond.
He is an extremely lucky individual to have friends in higher places at the club, keeping him in the financial luxury, that he undoubtedly doesn't deserve.
The promise of developing a young home grown team, that would serve the club for years to come, are proving to be hollow words.
Newell is now becoming a victim of his own previous actions, in other words losing his best young players to other sides.
What was once a club that once attracted and retained talented players, has now become an ever revolving door. Maybe, that is the way cricket is heading in general, but Notts no longer appear to be a happy club. As previously stated, Moores selects the same group of players game after game irrespective of form and ability compared to what he has at his disposal. It is no wonder that the likes of Evison and Budinger have decided to seek employment elsewhere.

  5. What has happened to Notts Pravda Nottsviewer ? Big news regarding Lord Budinger or is it no news due to the fact he is off to the Foxes ?
Spoke to Chris Read today at Derby for the England v Sri Lanka U19s.
What an absolute top bloke he is. Unassuming, polite completely non-arrogant he spoke with me for about 15 minutes and came into the stands to shake my hand and sit down next to me and to give his own time as he recognised I was a Notts supporter.
Top bloke, brilliant player and a great man deserves everything he got out the game and in the future. It was odd to me to be in the company of an all time Notts legend who is so humble to speak to who had time for an ordinary supporter of Notts cricket. Sadly, just don’t think the Ready’s of this world are here to stay……….

    1. It's a Bank Holiday Mr O, Pravda have a lie-in. Should be plenty of faff later to bury the bad news with as the preliminary work has been done; Majestic Monty and cute baby pic. Later this morning the running order will be: Budinger bad news, Patto bad news, Rocket women team news, something meaningless Rocket related, match stuff, post match horlicks, Rocket men news etc - bad stuff buried and not on the home page anymore. Tomorrow Newell announces the mega news that they've signed Trent Rocket Ian Cockbain and a fill-in unknown South African quick from the Central Lancashire league (I've made tomorrow's stuff up BTW). So Mr O, be patient as there are tried and tested Pravda means for hiding uncomfortable facts.

  7. Is Joe Clarke now the new recipient of the legendary and much coveted Mick Newell ‘Silver Spoon’ award ? In fairness to him, it does state he was the Melbourne Stars player of the tournament last season, so yes indeed, a plethora of positive feel good factor news now hits Notts Pravda. As our redoubtable DoC informed me last Tuesday about the Patto situation, i also wonder whether we are in the process of trying to bring a short-term replacement in for the final run in which would certainly lessen the news regarding Patto’s disappearance and Lord Budinger leaving ?
It’s a tried and trusted formula by Notts Pravda and the club hierarchy which has been used before especially with a potentially uncomfortable Members’ Forumn looming around the corner ?

  11. They're not bothered now, they've escaped the Members Forum with a little bit of dignity still intact. How do they get away with it treating supporters and club members with contempt as they do?

  12. Had to leave early today due to commitments and the usual cra**y inaccurate met office weather forecast for Grace Road. Was very surprised to see him come out to open the batting with Azad as he wasn’t even in the Leicester Squad they announced yesterday.
It’s very early days and he survived 2 strong LBW decisions but Lord Budinger looked good today, in fact, he looked very good. Guess there was little opening for him with Hameed/Slater and now Matt. Montgomery but Newell&Moores are sounding like a broken record when they keep saying “Whilst we wanted him to stay……” Whichever way you look at it, its yet ANOTHER young player who has come through the Academy and/or the Second Eleven who we have invested a lot of time, energy and money into who then leaves our club just when they appear ready for the next challenge of first team cricket ? At least the DoC has now returned to his old methods by signing a 30-something, albeit completely proven, from another County(Ollie Stone)
Perhaps we’ve now become the first big club County with a Test Ground and a Hundred Franchise to set up our player pathway from Academy to First Team level for other Counties ? A very noble initiative Mick and albeit a first in the game im sure Milnes, Wood, Evison & now Lord Budinger are delighted with it so many congratulations to the top team at Notts

    1. Sam Evans was ill, hence Hassan Azad returned to the squad (he appears to be their fall guy this season). It was all set-up for the Budinger announcement, but the 9.00 AM scheduling made it look like a last minute decision as Leicester had already announced a squad on Sunday, only to have to add Azad at 7.30AM on Monday. Budinger's announcement is almost buried already on the Notts website thanks to Lizzie Jones' song menu for a match that is not Notts and a report of a Loughborough Lightning game which has nothing what so ever to do with Nottinghamshire. The Second XI's game at Belper is delayed again, but only by 24 hours this time.

  13. Yes Foxy, had a roast dinner in The Meet and an all day brekkie the previous day. Decent quality at £7.50
They just couldn’t handle Matty Potts in both innings, just see him off but they are not up to it. Thought would be over well before tea when Lord Budinger went early. Credit Kimber for showing some resistance but he really could have been out 5-10 times but at least he stuck at it
It’s a real shame but half the side are only Premier League standard but still a very enjoyable 3 days there indeed
