Somerset RLODC at Taunton Win

OUTLAWS BLOW SOMERSET AWAY

Notts absolutely walloped Somerset in front of a large crowd at Taunton today. Having won the toss and inserted the home team on a surface offering plenty of pace and bounce, Notts dominated the contest throughout winning by 10 wickets with an amazing 38.1 overs to spare. The game over by 1448, the Notts innings lasted 52 minutes and 71 balls!

Notts named an unchanged team. Somerset had a lot of experienced players in their line up including two overseas players (Renshaw and Siddle and stalwarts Hildreth, Davies and Brooks. The game was played in glorious sunshine throughout.

Yesterday it was announced that Zak Chappell would be joining Derbyshire next season on a two-year contract. Today he knocked out the Somerset top order taking three of the first four wickets to set the ball rolling.

Chappell (Trescothick Stand End) opened the bowling off his 6th delivery he had Renshaw (4) brilliantly caught on the run by Paterson at wide third man, 4 for 1. The day’s champagne moment and which gave Notts instant momentum. Hutton was his partner with the new ball. In the 4th over, Davies (6) was caught by Montgomery at first slip off Hutton, 13 for 2. In the following over, Goldsworthy (1) played Chappell on to his stumps, 13 for 3. Hildreth went for a golden duck edging Chappell to Schadendorf who took the catch diving to his right, 14 for 4. Chappell after taking 3 for 11 off 4 overs was replaced by Paterson. With his fourth delivery Paterson had Bartlett (2) caught at first slip by Montgomery, 17 for 5. The partisan home crowd were stunned and in almost complete silence. Somerset completed the 10 over powerplay on 19 for 5.

Skipper Green joined James Rew in the middle and they initiated a mini recovery sharing a partnership of 45 in 12 overs. Rew, an 18-year-old left-hander from King's College, Taunton looked an exciting prospect. Hameed captained the team very positively keeping attacking fields in place and giving plenty of overs to his three seamers. Chappell returned for the 15th over and was straight driven by Green for two boundaries. Paterson switched ends in the 16th over. Green was dropped on 18 by Singh running round from long leg off Paterson. Singh perhaps misjudging the chance slightly in the strong North westerly wind.

Patterson-White came on to bowl in the 19th over. Ben Green (21) was bowled attempting a cut shot off Patterson-White, 62 for 6 in the 21st over. Aldridge (3) was stumped by the slick Schadendorf off Patterson-White (9-1-24-2), 82 for 7 in the 25th over. Rew (48 off 69 balls, 6x4) miscued an attempted leg side hit off Hutton with Singh taking a steepler at third man, 104 for 8 in the 30th over. Hutton (10-2-27-2) was bowled out by the 32nd over. Siddle (14) edged Paterson to Montgomery at first slip, 113 for 9 off 34 overs. Baker (3) was the last wicket to fall bowled by Paterson (8.4-1-28-3). Somerset 119 all out off 35.4 overs. Brooks 14 not out. Chappell finished with figures of 8-0-35-3. Notts had bowling outstandingly on a helpful deck. Hameed gambled bowling that his four main bowlers would finish the job and he vindicated. The fifth bowler Fateh Singh never got a bowl.

Notts made a mockery of their run chase galloping to victory in 11.5 overs. Slater took 14 off the opening over including 3 boundaries bowled by Brooks (River End). Nine runs came off the second over delivered by Siddle with two boundaries for Budinger. Brooks conceded three off the third over and then Siddle bowled a maiden. But then the opening batting pair went into fifth gear with 97 runs coming off the next 7.5 overs. The fifth over went for seven including a leg bye.

A total of 14 came off the 6th over bowled by Siddle with two boundaries for Budinger and one boundary for Slater. Kasey Aldridge bowled the 7th over, a boundary through point by Budinger brought up the Notts 50. Budinger hit the next delivery for another four, 9 off the over. Siddle (4-1-33-0) conceded nine off his 4th over, two boundaries to Slater

Slater pulled Aldridge for 4 and a 6 over square leg in the 9th over, 11 off the over. Budinger smashed Baker for consecutive leg side sixes, 16 off the 10th over, Notts 93 for 0 at the end of the powerplay

Slater hooked Aldridge (3-0-28-0) for six over long leg, 8 off the 11th over. Notts got over the line in the following over which cost Sonny. Baker (1.5-0-38-0) 23 runs in five legitimate deliveries. The first ball was a no ball, the next two were dot balls to Slater, the following delivery was a single for Slater which brought up his 50 off 46 balls. Next ball, a no ball, was smashed for four over midwicket by Budinger who got to 50 off 25 balls. The free hit was hit for four towards long on by Budinger. The following delivery Budinger hit for two. Then the following ball was a no ball once more from the hapless Baker. What turned out to be the final delivery was yet another no ball that Budinger smashed to the square leg ropes. Notts 124 for 0 off 11.5 overs with Budinger on 62 (off 29 balls, 10x4, 2x6) and Slater on 50 (off 46 balls, 7x4, 2x6) had absolutely massacred Somerset. The crowd seemed stunned at the end with many remaining in their seats trying to take it all in. It was announced at the end that the Somerset members forum scheduled for 1900 hours had been brought forward 4 hours.

Notts, who fielded tigerishly throughout, had underlined once more that if more faith had been put into youngsters earlier in the campaign, a T20 quarter-final slot would have been secured. MAG
