LIONS MADE
Three Notts* players feature in the England Lions squad (see below)
BBC reports:
Jofra Archer will travel with the England Lions squad for training in the United Arab Emirates next month as he continues to recover from injury.
Bowler Archer, 27, has not played for England since March 2021 because of back and elbow injuries.
Haseeb Hameed, Dan Lawrence and 18-year-old leg-spinner Rehan Ahmed are in the 15-strong Lions squad.
They will tour between 6 and 27 November and support the men's Test squad before their visit to Pakistan.
The senior side will travel to the UAE on 18 November and play a three-day practice match against the Lions from 23 November before the first Test a week later.
Test players James Anderson, Jamie Overton, Ollie Robinson, Jack Leach and Will Jacks will head out early to train with the Lions.
Archer is one of three fast bowlers, along with Saqib Mahmood and Brydon Carse, who are touring as part of their rehabilitation from injury.
Since his last appearance, Archer - who has 86 international wickets in 13 Tests, 17 one-day internationals and 12 Twenty20s - has had two operations on an elbow issue and suffered a stress fracture of the lower back.
Bowlers Matthew Potts and Matthew Fisher are the other capped players in an inexperienced Lions squad which also features Surrey wicketkeeper Jamie Smith, Sussex opener Tom Haines and Essex seamer Sam Cook.
Hameed last played for England in their Ashes defeat in Australia last winter while Lawrence has not featured since the tour to the Caribbean in March.
England Lions training group: Tom Abell (Somerset), Rehan Ahmed (Leicestershire), Josh Bohannon (Lancashire), Jack Carson (Sussex), Sam Conners (Derbyshire), Sam Cook (Essex), Matthew Fisher (Yorkshire), Haseeb Hameed (Nottinghamshire), Tom Haines (Sussex), Jack Haynes (Worcestershire),Lyndon James (Nottinghamshire), Dan Lawrence (Essex), Liam Patterson-White (Nottinghamshire)Matthew Potts (Durham), Jamie Smith (Surrey)
* Haseeb Hameed not yet announced if remaining at Notts at the end of his current contract - pull yer finger out Notts!.
Really pleased for LPW&LJ and fully deserved. I guess Hameed will be pleased, its just a bit of a come down after being selected for an Ashes tour last winter, but at least it shows hes still in the frame and there or thereabouts after a very decent summer for us. The rumours were true about Rehan Ahmed then and im also pleased for Sam Conners of Derbyshire getting this recognition. It’s easy to go under the radar at a small club in Division 2 thesedays although thank goodness the days of the selectors being southern based and mainly focussing on these Counties, as the only ones they saw play, are no more. Anyone recall the classic ‘Lord Ted’ Dexter referring to Devon Malcom as Malcom Devon back in the day ?
ReplyDeleteAnother classic gaffe was by man of the people himself David Cameron who referred to Durham legend Paul Collingwood as Mr. Wood as he’d been briefed and thought his name was Colin Wood unbelievably. This was, apparently, at the Downing Street reception the winning Ashes squad of 2005 received. A classic bit of sledging by the late, great, Shane Warne was shouting to Colly when he was batting - “what does the MBE stand for Colly? Must Be Embarrassing ?”in reference to him hardly playing in the series.
Something of a sacred cow warney, wonder if colly thought “ who’s taking the piss now” when he popped off . Foxy
ReplyDeleteHelped to change cricket Foxington, as almost single handed he revived leg spin bowling for a new generation. But yes, a somewhat flawed, larger than life character we’ve lost.
DeleteLike the majority of geniuses, Gascoigne, Best, Maradonna, Clough, Ronnie O’Sullivan etc, they always seem to live life on the edge.
Always had massive respect for Shane, they say when he went to Hampshire, he would never refuse to sign his autograph for someone or make time for a young kid interested in spin bowling and just imagine how many fans would have wanted a piece of him down the years? Zillions I would say.
Yes, can’t disagree with anything you have said, we’ll put . Foxy
Delete75 NOT OUT . For all the comings and goings at Notts ccc this season we have certainly ended up with a fair degree of promise for the coming campaign .
ReplyDeleteInteresting to hear LPW say last night ( at Cricket Lovers) that he has never been considered for the Blast 20 . P. Moores has simply said the number 7-8 spot is destined for Calvin Harrison . He has never played a proper Blast 20 match but would love to sample the atmosphere on a packed out Friday night
Yes, 79 NOT OUT I also thought that was strange. I think after how well LPW showed he could strike the ball in the RLODC at times this season he has now got to be in contention for a place in the starting line up and I would like to think he will be putting pressure on Samit Patel for his place in the side as he’s pretty much a like for like replacement in this regard.
DeleteCalvin Harrison ‘went backwards’ a bit last year which is probably understandable in his second season with no longer being new on the scene and the respective captains, cricket coach’s and team analysts all studying his bowling and he was dropped from the team towards the end of the campaign.
Teams seem to be obsessed with leg/wrist spin bowlers in T20 cricket and he clearly has some ability with the bat, but surely stubborn Peter Moores will want to get Liam involved next season.
I guess it also depends on who we bring in as the overseas option(s) and also the situation regarding Matt Carter ?
As both LJ and LPW are both in the UAE with the Lions, it's a little odd that the Club would announce their new contracts at this time, but at least it's welcome news at any time.
ReplyDeleteDelighted for both that they're staying, also although I'm no England lover can I also say well done to Alex Hales for his batting today.
