18 first class centuries and 134 vital wickets now for Steven Mullaney. A very good effort indeed especially when you think he’s been middle order batsman and makeshift opener(when there was no one else to do it and he did it pretty successfully as well) plus captaining the side in recent seasons whilst bringing a new, younger bunch of players into the side. I wondered just how much he had left in the tank, but he had such a good season last year from a personal point of view. Feel he should now only concentrate on the county championship and possibly the RLODC and hang his boots up for the Blast T20 games. Not sure what his contract situation is but feel he has got at least another 2 years left in him at the top level. Do think he must keep his fitness levels up to the required standard however, as he can then be called upon to bowl some overs when needed.
ReplyDeleteAgree. Also in recent seasons the speed/strike rate. of Mullaneys runs has been impressive.
DeleteThis shouldn’t be a “criticise Joe Clarke” piece but when I look at his batting vs Samit & Mullaney he basically offers similar runs but no wickets.
We also see what a workhorse Fletcher is (vs Broad and Ball his stats and wickets per over match up).
Huttons wickets/wickets per over also stack up quite nicely vs our bigger names.

Players like Fletch are probably now a thing of the past . Too many diversions and ways to get richer. Loyalty verses Extra cash . Who wins?

Interesting stuff thanks. I’ve been back and perused it a few times. Does anyone think joe Clarke and Ben Slater s stats are similar? And if they are, should the be? Foxy
ReplyDeleteYes I do. Ave runs per innings is similar; both get to 30 around 30% of the time but only convert to 100 around 7% of the time. This tells me that both are as close to national selection as each other.
DeleteThese numbers lower than Hameed and Duckett whom you can say are on the fringes of national selection.
I tend to look at absolute number of runs and chances to make runs (ie innings batted) rather than the average - same for wickets with a bowler (by overs bowled).
I’ve a feeling slater tailed off a bit towards the end of the season having started quite strongly.
You would of course expect Clarke’s figures to be stronger given that he isn’t always facing a new ball and opening bowlers. Ok the new ball can run away more and fields are more attacking for openers - but that can work both ways.
