Day 4

Matthew Carter's century couldn't prevent Nottinghamshire’s Second XI from falling to defeat against Yorkshire at Headingley.

Batting at number eight, Carter made 102 from 93 deliveries, including 12 fours and four sixes, before becoming the fifth of George Hill's six victims.

Carter was supported in a 127-run stand by James Hayes (54), but Notts' second innings total of 256 saw them defeated by 205 runs.

Earlier, opener Ben Martindale made 38 after Yorkshire declared their second innings closed on 266/5.

A combination of overnight rain and bad light delayed the resumption of play until 11.40am with 10 overs being lost from the days play. Being ahead by 461 Yorkshire declared leaving Nottinghamshire requiring 462 from 86 overs.

Matthew Fisher had joined on day three as a substitute for Ben Mike and he struck in the very first over bowling last seasons 2nd XI player of the year, Schadendorf for nought. We had played 19 minutes when there was another short interruption for bad light but only one further over was lost and shortly after the restart Fisher struck again having Harrison caught at square leg by Ben Cliff. Tom Loten joined Martindale  and they added 30 before the latter was also caught at square leg, this time by Jack Shutt from Ben Cliff – he had made 38 from 44 and lunch was taken at 63-3.

Replicating the start to the morning a wicket fell in the first over of the afternoon session, Dominic Leech having Loten caught behind by Jonny Bairstow. Enter George Hill – who, in his first five overs, returned the figures of 4-27. He had King lbw, Stone brilliantly caught low in his follow through, McCann caught at point by Cliff and Ahmed taken behind by Bairstow. This reduced Nottinghamshire to 108-8.

Hayes joined Carter and by tea they had advanced their total to 200-8; Carter reached his 50 from only 41 balls with 7 fours and a six and at tea was 90 not out from 75 balls, Hayes was unbeaten on 19.

Carter reached his maiden century from 89 deliveries including a total of 12 fours and 4 sixes – he was finally dismissed for 102 when caught low at mid on by Harry Duke to give Hill “a five for” – 235-9.

Pettman and Hayes survived long enough for the latter to reach a maiden half century and it was he who became George Hills sixth victim to wrap up victory by 205 runs when he was well caught by substitute fielder Harvey Round. Hill finished with figures of 11.1-1-45-6.

Yorkshire lead by 461 at the premature close

Yorkshire extended their lead to 461 with five wickets in hand at Headingley despite a third day pierced with dismissals from Nottinghamshire.

Olly Stone, Raheem Ahmed, James Hayes and Calvin Harrison all claimed a wicket each after the visitors had been bowled out for 331, including the prized scalp of Jonny Bairstow for the latter.

Ahmed was also in the action to run out George Hill for 88 with a direct hit from mid-on after the top order batter had tried to steal a quick single.

Harrison’s dismissal of Bairstow came after the batter had made 57, pinned lbw by a full delivery.

Yorkshire finished the Nottinghamshire innings in the seventh over of the morning with George Hill bowling Pettman for five – 331 all out, a deficit of 195. The follow on was not enforced and Yorkshire batted again.

Wharton and Bean added 81 in only 97 balls before Bean was well caught low down at second slip by Martindale off the bowling of Ahmed – he had made 40 from 48 with 6 fours. Wharton was bowled by Tom Loten for 35 from 55 (93-2) and lunch was taken with Hill unbeaten on 11.

Jonny Bairstow joined Hill after lunch and their partnership extended to 91 in only 99 balls before Bairstow was adjudged lbw having made 57 from 61 deliveries with 8 fours and a six. Hill reached his half century from 52 balls with 8 fours and a six and he took his personal tally to 88 from 76 balls before he was run out.

Harry Duke joined Will Fraine but made five from seven balls before being caught behind from the bowling of Olly Stone. Yash Vagadia came to the crease and struck 2 fours from his 10 deliveries before, at 3.31pm, bad light brought an end to proceedings – tea was taken.

After an inspection at 5pm play was abandoned for the day.

Ben Martindale, Freddie McCann and Olly Stone all passed fifty as Nottinghamshire mounted a middle-order fightback on day two of their Second XI Championship fixture against Yorkshire at Headingley.

Opener Martindale's 66 runs came from 64 deliveries, the left-hander weathering the loss of Dane Schadendorf and Calvin Harrison before departing shortly after Notts passed 100.

Martindale had Tom Loten for company for the majority of his innings, the former Yorkshire all-rounder making 30 from 45 balls.

After the duo departed - and Sammy King was removed - Stone and McCann compiled a 156-run stand before being dismissed in successive Ben Cliff overs.

There was further resistance from Matthew Carter and Raheem Ahmed before both fell to Ben Mike late in the day, leaving the visitors 313/9.

Earlier, Carter and Loten had ended a century stand compiled by Dominic Leech - who took two in two in the early stages of Notts' innings - and Yash Vagadia.

Notts will enter day three 213 runs in arrears, with one wicket remaining in their first innings.

Day Two Tyke spin

Resuming on 437-7 Vagadia and Leech took their partnership beyond the 100 mark as both played some pleasing shots. Vagadia posted his half century from 65 balls including 9 fours and Leech was approaching a first 2^nd X1 Championship half century when he was trapped lbw for a well made 47. Their partnership had added 126 in only 160 balls and his 47 is Leech’s highest score.

At Leech’s departure we were 509-8. Vagadia went on to make 69 from 97 balls with 10 fours and a six when he skied a ball  towards square leg and was well caught by Schadendorf the wicket keeper – 517-9. Shutt and Cliif had added nine more when at 12.30pm Yorkshire declared.

Five overs were possible before lunch and Nottinghamshire reached 24 without loss. The first over of the afternoon saw Leech take wickets with successive balls – Schadendorf caught at second slip by Bean and Harrison caught at third slip by Wharton; 24-2.

Martindale played well to post his half century from 48 deliveries with 8 fours and a six and had reached 66 when he was bowled by trialist, Ben Parker and he struck again in his next over repeating the dismissal to get rid of former Yorkshire player Tom Loten (30 from 45 balls). Bean took his second slip catch to give Ben Cliff his first wicket and King was out without scoring.

Olly Stone (27 no) and Freddy McCann (45 no) added 84 for the sixth wicket as our visitors reached tea at 187-5. They had taken their partnership 156 when the former was well caught at mid wicket by Ben Mike for 65 from 97 balls with 11 fours. McCann reached his 50 from 61 balls with 8 fours and he became Cliffs third victim being caught at first slip by Fraine – 260-7.

Matt Carter had made 32 from 41 balls when he was bowled by Ben Mike who followed this by having Ahmed caught at slip by Fraine for 16, 310-9. Pettman and Hayes negotiated the final few overs to close at 313-9.

Day 1 The Trent Bridge Spin

Toby Pettman picked up three wickets, and Olly Stone two, in the face of a strong Yorkshire Second XI display on the first day at Headingley.

Stone’s wickets included that of Jonny Bairstow on his return to action following an ankle injury, albeit not before the England batter had made 97 of the White Rose’s eventual 437/7.

Meanwhile Academy bowler Thomas Giles, on debut for the senior side, claimed the scalp of Finlay Bean for 70.

Having lost the toss, captain Stone made the first inroad by inducing an edge from James Wharton, and Pettman had Hill caught at cover before lunch.

After Giles strangled Bean for his maiden Second XI wicket, and Bairstow was caught at cover, Will Fraine chopped Calvin Harrison onto his own stumps.



Ben Mike and Harry Duke added 100 for the sixth wicket, before the former was caught at long on off Pettman, and the 6ft7 pacer claimed his third of the day by trapping Duke lbw in the late stages of the day.

Yorkshire spin

On a sunny but cool morning Captain, Harry Duke won the toss and elected to bat first.

Finlay Bean and James Wharton opened the batting against an attack featuring Olly Stone and it was he that struck first having Wharton caught behind for 11 whilst the ball was appearing to move around.

Bean was joined by George Hill, and they had added 91 when, shortly before the lunch interval, Hill was caught at point by Martindale off Pettman – he made 34 from 59 deliveries with 5 fours. This brought to the crease the much-awaited return of Jonny Bairstow. At lunch Bean was unbeaten on 47 from 84 balls with 8 fours and Bairstow was 2 not out – lunch Yorkshire 116-2.

Shortly after lunch Bean reached his half century from 98 balls including 9 fours and he had added 73 with Bairstow for the third wicket when he was well caught behind down the leg side having made 70 from 128 balls with 12 fours.

Bairstow reached his half century from 47 balls with 8 fours and had added 84 with Will Fraine for the 4th wicket before he was caught low down at extra cover for 97 from only 88 balls with 13 fours and 2 sixes including some trademark Bairstow shots.

Fraine was bowled for 26 as we reached 280-5. Ben Mike had joined skipper, Harry Duke and at tea they had advanced the score to 305-5. In total this pair added exactly a 100 in 156 deliveries before Mike was caught at deepish mid on for 60 from 84 balls with 6 fours and a six. Three runs later Duke was adjudged lbw for 46 but Vagadia and Leech saw out the rest of the day adding 54 for the 8th wicket and Yorkshire closed on 437-7, in sight of maximum batting bonus points.
