Norfolk 50 Over Showcase Event at Manor Park Horsford CC, Norwich Win

NOTTS THE COMPREHENSIVE VICTORS

Notts won the toss and elected to bat and a pleasant windy sunny Sunday morning at Manor Park in Norwich. Of the 15 men in the squad James, Hutton , Paterson and Hayes (who picked up a niggle in the warm-up) were left out of the final Eleven.

In front of a crowd of circa 400 or so with a visiting contingent of around 15. Andy Hanby (City End) and Cal Metcalf (NDR End) opened the bowling with Notts openers Slater and Martindale making a relatively sedate start after Slater had found the boundary twice in the opening over. Slater was dropped on 13 by wicket keeper Stephen Gray off Andy Hanby. Notts were 44 for 0 at the end of the 10 over powerplay.

Ben Wilcox came on from the City End for the 11th over. The Notts 50 came up in the 12th over with a single for Martindale off Cal Metcalf. Will Bowman replaced Metcalf for the 14th over. Slater and Martindale had added 85 for the opening wicket, when the game suddenly came to life as the young right-arm seamer Will Bowman took three wickets in 4 balls during the 18th over. Martindale, fast between the wickets had played a somewhat scratchy 30 off 56 balls with only two boundaries when he was bowled attempting a cut shot off Bowman. Two balls later Slater (48 off 51 balls, 6x4) drove the ball high back to Bowman who caught and bowled him at the second attempt parrying the initial attempt back to himself, 86 for 2. Hameed departed first ball chopping on to Bowman.

Will Means bowled the 19th over with Montgomery and Patterson-White having to consolidate on a wicket where timing the ball proved difficult at times. In the 25th over, Patterson-White hit Means (7-0-29-0) for a straight six. Patterson-White was then caught on the square leg ropes by Freddie Fairey off Bowman for 25, 129 for 4 in the 28th over. The impressive Bowman bowled his spell straight through and ended with figures of 10-1-46-4. Slow left-armer Ryan Findlay came on to bowl in the 33rd over and proved somewhat expensive. Metcalf replaced Bowman from the NDR End for the following over. The 35th over went for 19, Sam King hit Findlay for six over mid-wicket and in same over Montgomery hit three boundaries in four deliveries. Montgomery reached his 50 off 57 balls with a single off Metcalf in the 38th over. The more aggressive King reached 50 off 42 balls with a two off Hanby (7-0-45-0). King (58 off 46 balls, 4x4, 2x6) hit Findlay for six over mid-wicket but then holed out off the same bowler to Bowman at long off, 234 for 5 in the 43rd over. King had impressed with his ball striking and had put forward his case for playing at Chelmsford on Thursday
. The fifth wicket stand between Montgomery and King was worth 105 in 15 overs to put Notts well in command. Former Notts Academy man Calum Metcalf (0 for 52) returned for the 44th over to complete his 10 over spell. Another former Notts Academy graduate, Ben Wilcox replaced him and had Montgomery dropped on 80 at short fine leg. Two balls later Montgomery hit him for six over long on. Montgomery (88 off 79 balls, 8x4, 1x6) was run out via a deflection off bowler Findlay (9-0-80-1) after Schadendorf had hit him hard down the pitch, 270 for 6. Montgomery’s innings was characterised by his weep shot, conventional and reverse. Next ball, Schadendorf hit the slow left armer for six over mid-wicket, 16 off the 47th over. Thirteen runs were then acquired in the 50th over, Schadendorf hit Wilcox (7-0-52-0) for 6 over long on. Harrison was then dropped on 8 by keeper Gray. Notts closed on 312 for 6 off 50 overs with Schadendorf impressive during his 27-ball 41 not out (3x4, 2x6) and Harrison on 9 not out. The prolific Second Eleven run scorer Tom Loten along with Fateh Singh not getting a bat.

The skies filled in during the interval, the wind got up and the temperature started to drop. Thankfully the forecasted rain to did not arrive until after the conclusion of the contest. Pettman opened the bowling from the City End with Tom Loten, with his galloping skipping run-up, sharing the new ball. In the 7th over, Arthurton (12) hit a delivery from Pettman to Hameed at mid-off who hit the stumps with a direct hit, 17 for 1. In the next over Wilcox was caught low down by Slater at square leg off Loten, 24 for 2. Norfolk were 32 for 2 after 10 overs.

Patterson-White replaced Loten (5-1-19-1) from the NDS End in the 12th over and for the following over Harrison came on for the accurate Pettman (6-0-13-0) from the City End. Captain Hameed short on seam bowling options then stuck to his spin quartet for the remainder of the innings which lasted exactly two hours.

Cooper (19) attempting a cut shot off Patterson-White (7-0-21-1) was bowled off stump, 61 for 3 in the 18th over. Gray (17) swept Harrison to Montgomery at leg slip, 62 for 4 after 19 overs. In the 24th over, Singh's first delivery was hit to the extra cover boundary by Fairey. Notts were ripping through the overs at a very fast pace, the fielders sprinting between overs.

Montgomery came on for the 26th over and in the following over, Fairey (18) played on to Singh, 92 for 5 in the 27th over. The Norfolk 100 came up in the 29th over. In the 30th over, Hudson de Lucchi (14) charged down the pitch to Montgomery and was stumped by Schadendorf, 101 for 6. Schadendorf carrying on from his good form with the bat with an impressive performance behind the stumps. Four balls later, Bowman making room was bowled by Montgomery for 0, 102 for 7. Montgomery 's (4-0-24-2) next over went for 12 including a boundary and a six over mid-wicket by Findlay. Harrison returned from the City End and just as he had done against Kent on Thursday took out the tail quickly taking the last three wickets to finish with figures of 6.4-0-27-4. Metcalf (4) was caught at mid-wicket by the juggling Hameed, 119 for 8 in the 33rd over. Singh (6-0-21-1) swapped to the NDS End for the 34th overs. Harrison bowled Means (3) off stump, 127 for 9. Three balls later at 16:48, Hanby was last man out to fall caught by Schadendorf. Norfolk 127 all out off 34.4 overs had been trounced by 185 runs with top-scorer Findlay finishing on 22 not out off 20 balls. A useful workout with Montgomery, King, Slater and Schadendorf impressing with the bat and with an all-round good bowling and fielding performance albeit against a somewhat poor home batting line-up.

Presumably James along with Hutton and/or Paterson will be in the Eleven on Thursday. But who will make way? MAG

  3. Looking forward to this comp, it’s my favourite white ball format
Had hoped we could have called on a bit more experience this year for when we may come up against sides not so depleted as we are that would take us those stages further in the tournament and give us more options in some games.
Sadly not to be. Fletch crocked and Mull seemingly “unavailable” ? and Moores wildcarded into the TR’s after a couple of late slogfests in the Blast. Maybe we wouldn’t have used these lads, anyway, but it would have been nice to have these options, as expected this time around.
Huge benefit in Calvin Harrison being available this time, a genuine match winner with his leg spin, fielding and he is no mug with the willow either.
Losing Lord Budinger may be a blow? He is probably a better opening batsman than Ben Martindale, but it’s a good chance for Ben to show us some glimpses as to why he was given a new, 3 year contract, so good luck to him for the competition.
Also, notice some of the Franchise outfits are still playing games at their main Test Venues, so why have we got 3 at Welbeck, surely 2 would be more sensible.
Admit it Ms. Purstrings, you just don’t want the non-money making One Day Cup at Trent Bridge, except for family fun day and the Final itself.

  4. I reckon the best eleven in approximate batting order are :-

    Hameed
    Slater
    Monty
    James
    Schadendorf
    LPW
    King
    Harrison
    Singh
    Hutton
    Patto

Bit worried though if Hutton & Patto play & get injured & then miss vital Champo games along with maybe Fletcher, Stone & Ball.

  6. 80 NOT OUT
THREE 50 over games “away” at the unloved ( by most NOTTS Members) Welbeck ground .
What is the REAL REASON this is happening . A good proportion of NOTTS Members are elderly/ retired/ in poor health/ without personal transport etc . Many Members will simply have to miss the three games . It’s an insult to being a NOTTS Member .
I just cannot accept the reason given .
There are many vacant days in August at TB even with the 100 ( I’ll fated I reckon) being staged .
