Notts suffered a humiliating defeat at Trent Bridge with Warwickshire winning the T20 contest with 14.4 overs to spare. Notts managed to get bowled out for 57 in 17.2 overs on the same pitch that they scored 175-5 in 17 overs two days previously. Warwickshire knocked off the runs within the powerplay for the loss of Ed Barnard.
With sponsors John Pye celebrating 10 years of sponsoring Notts, the team donned red shirts. By the end of the contest which lasted 100 minutes in total, the home sides faces no doubt matched the colour of the shirts. The performance was so bad that Notts hit two boundaries throughout their apology of their innings (an edged four for Clarke and a straight four by top-scorer James). The rest of the runs comprised solely of singles plus two wides. The THIRTY-TWO BALL reply from the Bears comprised nine fours and two sixes. Another quirk of the game was that the match comprised of no byes, leg byes or no balls.
Warwickshire won the toss and elected to bowl. The match was played in sunny conditions throughout in front of another sparse crowd, some of whom left at the interval between the innings. Moores was very predictable with his team selection. With Duckett now with the England squad, he selected Ben Slater who during his 12-year professional career has played 15 Blast games scoring 305 @21.78 with a scoring rate of 109.71. The last one the 2-run quarter-final defeat against Hampshire in 2021. With qualification a very slight possibility, a youngster should have been give a chance.
Off the fifth delivery of the match, Clarke edged Garton (Pavilion End) to the third man ropes; six off the first over. Kiwi Zak Foulkes conceded three off the second over. The procession started when Martindale (3) was yorked Garton lost his off stump to Garton. Slater (0) fell first ball caught on the backward point ropes by Mousley at the second attempt off a shortish wide ball from Garton (2-1-6-2), 9 for 2 in the 3rd over. A 2-wicket maiden for Garton. Clarke (5) fell to Mousley's second ball edging him to keeper Benjamin; 9 for 3. Three off the 4th over. Montgomery (3) fell lbw to Foulkes (2-0-6-1); 14 for 4. Three off the 5th over. Mousley (2-0-4-1) conceded a single off the 6th over. Notts 16 for 4 at the end of the powerplay. Worse was to come.
Briggs conceded three off the 7th over. Four runs came off the 8th over bowled by Lintott. Moores (6) survived 12 balls before top edging Briggs to Hain at short fine leg who held the easiest of catches; 24 for 5 in the 9th over. Moores with a top score of 31 for Notts since last July needs to take a long rest from first-team cricket. His reputation and confidence shot to pieces. In 50 years of watching cricket I cannot remember a similar situation where a batsman has been given repeated chances only to fail every time, it’s gone beyond embarrassing, and most importantly not fair on the player himself. It’s now to time to find out whether Schadendorf has an aptitude for first-team cricket. Lintott conceded five off the 10th over. Notts 31 for 5.
Briggs conceded three off the 11th over. Haynes (13) was caught at short third man off Lintott; 36 for 6. Five off the 12th over. Bethell conceded five in the 13th over. Next to go was Patterson-White (4) was caught at wide long on by Mousley off Moeen; 45 for 7 in the 14th over. Briggs (4-0-12-1) conceded three off the 15th over. Harrison (3) was caught behind by Benjamin off a very wide ball from Lintott (4-0-17-2); 49 for 8 in the 16th over. Next ball to ironic cheers a single for Stone took the team score to 50. The champagne moment of the Notts innings fell on the second ball of the 17th over when a lofted straight drive by James (15) off Bethell (2-0-10-1) went for a single bounce four. The crowd utterly in raptures. Three balls later, James was caught on the mid-wicket ropes, 57 for 9 after 17 overs. Stone (3) top edged Moeen (1.2-0-2-2) and skied Moeen to Briggs to be caught at short third man. Notts 57 all out off 17.2 overs. To put the performance into perspective the score was 34 lower than any Notts team has previously scored in an innings of T20 cricket. They have twice made 91 both against Lancashire at Old Trafford in 2006 and Trent Bridge in 2022. The total was the lowest ever recorded by a team batting first in T20 Blast cricket, the previous worst being the 67 Sussex recorded against Hampshire at Hove way back in 2004. It was fourth worst in Blast history only beaten by 44 by Glamorgan versus Surrey at the Oval in 2019, 47 by Northants v Durham (CLS) in 2011 and Worcestershire 53 v Lancashire (Old Trafford) 2016.
The first-team coach failed to appear for the half-time practice handing his catching glove to the team sport psychologist Chris Marshall.
The Notts bowlers had nothing to bowl at. Fazalhaq (Radcliffe Road End) conceded 11 in the first over including two offside fours by Barnard and two wides. Yates pulled Stone for six over long leg and then Barnard edged him for four through fine leg; 12 off Stone’s only over.
Barnard (12) was caught at mid-off by Clarke off Fazalhaq, 24 for 1 off 2.2 overs. Mousley hit Fazalhaq for four through long leg, seven off the third over. Yates hit Montgomery for four through cover, then hit two fours, through mid-wicket, 14 off the 4th over. Mousley hit Fazalhaq for four through long leg and then Yates hit Fazalhaq for 6 over long leg. Not a good debut bowl for the Afghan with figures of 3-0-31-1. With one needed Harrison’s second ball was nit for an extra cover four. Warwickshire 61-1 off 5.2 overs had won the contest by 16:10 with Yates on 35 and Mousley on 22. The ineptitude of Notts performance was further underlined with the Bears winning the contest with 88 balls unused, another Blast record. The previous holders being Worcestershire who lost with 82 balls to spare at Trent Bridge against Notts three years ago.
So closes a disastrous home T20 campaign which including a solitary win and two no results. The ticket pricing is far too high and match day presentation worse than awful. A lot of head scratching for the powers that be at Trent Bridge, complacency needs to wiped off the agenda. MAG

If this game starts in spite of the weather forecasted, Outlaws will be without Ben Duckett this time, so who will come into the eleven for him?
Will it be Ben Slater, who joined the squad for Friday's footballing whilst it's Sammy King who comes into the squad?
Bears are clear table toppers now after winning at Headingley whilst rain affected [washed-out] rivals Lancashire. Playing at Trent Bridge will suit the Bears as they've got Sam Hain.
John Pye anniversary: not content with silly red caps last season, the shirt sponsors have this year decided that Outlaws will be wearing red shirts for this game only (hopefully), with the offending items auctioned off afterwards. Perhaps red rain ponchos would be more appropriate...
Come rain or shine we'll all have a treat in store tomorrow when The Blaze parade the Lottie aka The Charlotte Edwards Trophy. There will be rainbow laces and stumps too probably.
Selecting Slater would be a negative and backward step, as historically, he plays too many dot balls in this format. However, it is Peter Moores we are talking about, so he will probably play. King deserves his chance and let's face it Notts are past the stage in this comp, where they can afford to be cautious
ReplyDeleteOpting to use Slater is the Peter Moores way to go, as backward a step as it is.
DeleteLooks another poor crowd.
ReplyDeleteUtterly pathetic embarrassing Notts lowest ever T20 score . Moore's must go both of them.
ReplyDelete81NOTOUT
ReplyDeleteNOTTS INNINGS WAS A BITTER PILL TO SWALLOW . Loud boos from the sparse crowd after Stone was given out.
So a record of the wrong type has been broken . A record low score of 57 beats the previous low of 91 .
What can you say ?!
What do others on here make of it ?
Hope all who have paid £29 for that go and ask for there money back.
ReplyDeleteThey have tripped over their rainbow laces
ReplyDelete81,NOT OUT
ReplyDeleteThe match today started at 2.30 pm and ended at 4.15 pm . Daylight robbery to charge £25/£29 for that . Is it possible Peter Moores said to the Notts players when they trudged back to the Pavilion
“ don’t think you lot are now going home yet ! It’s straight to the nets for a couple of hours . We have got to improve . Future contracts of players AND management are on the line!!”
I wonder if a proper completed Blast match has ever finished in such a short space of time !?
Will the Notts Committee possibly suggest resignations might be the right thing to do ?
The committee need to start representing the views of the club membership , and eradicate the virus that has been eminating from the top table for far too long.
ReplyDeleteIrrespective of what costs may be incurred, we cannot endure another season of this pathetic clap trap, from management who are only interested in protecting their own selfish financial interests, to the detriment of the team.
Enough is enough, time to move on.
Not going to happen I'm afraid when the top table are able to co-opt members directly onto the committee. The lack of democracy is displayed when a committee member rejected by the membership joins the committee through the nominations panel all of which is endorsed by the sport's organizational body.
DeleteAstonishingly bad. Moores out.
ReplyDeleteAll went wrong from when the Notts players came out in there rainbow shirts nice to see the bears not buying in to this world of woke' they were here to win a cricket match & they certainly did that
ReplyDeleteYes things have to change but you know that won't happen
Unless there's a members rebellion,
Everything that's wrong starts at the top & it's all been to cosy for to long
It needs a total clear out starting with newell, moors & the CEO who's more interested in promoting gay pride month
Than what's happening on the field of play
If One word sums up what's going on at Notts it's (EMBARRASSING) the laughing stock of English cricket
When you know the record low score was 91 in 2006 you can tell how bad it was today. They are top of the league and it show's, ultra professional, excellent bowling and perfect field placings meant we were under pressure from the first over. And we have to face it, apart from Clarke and to some degree Haynes, this batting line is not fit for purpose. If Joe doesn't get runs no one else can. Our middle oder is very fragile and we lack power hitters through the whole team. Martindale, Montgomery, Moores !!!!, James and Harrison are just not good to bat at this level. The bowling is reasonable but big change required in the batting line up, and coaching.

ReplyDeleteToday on commentary even the normal words of praise regardless of actual performance - from Dave Bracey were missing . He even ventured to say the Notts offering today was shocking and felt sorry for the spectators that turned up !
When Dave’s comments turn against you and become barbed then you had better watch out .
The natives are getting restless
Very restless .

ReplyDeleteJust read Mags very fair and well detailed report of todays poor game . It’s shocking the the Head Coaches son is picked match after match after match even though his top score for Notts in the past 12 months is a poor 31. It’s nepotism at its most blatant . As Mag advises surely it’s almost cruel to keep selecting Tom Moores on a continuous basis . Give the poor chap a break and select him for a few Second 11 matches and try and build a bit of technique and confidence back .
Perhaps three changes needed for the coming away match on Friday ? Things can’t get any worse surely ?
We've reached the point where is doesn't matter if changes make the performances worse. We have to try a new blend of players as the current lot aren't producing the required performances as a collective. Omelettes and breaking eggs.
DeleteI decided to watch Moores interview on TB.
ReplyDeleteI see this at work a bit. People who observe and are detached, rather than owning something and feeling really responsible for it with all the emotions that brings
Peter is definitely the former. He observed that there is a lack of experience. As if somehow he inherited the team this season. It was obvious that Christian, Patel, Mull and I’d suggest Hales were on their way out long before it happened
I seem to remember these pages being full of requests last year to bring in new players.
I also saw no anger. No plan. No apology. It wasn’t a given we would have won on Friday and were unlucky. The table doesn’t lie and nor do the performances
Jim G
I completely agree. He "commentates" on the situation as if it has nothing to do with him. No sense of responsibility.
DeleteSame again next season? Hales another deal. The likes of slater moores Montgomery plodding on. Poor overseas signings. Worse still moores senior saying we have a formidable side.
ReplyDeleteImad Wasim for next season. Mick Newell has his number already. You've got to make it easy for the old chap.
DeleteSadly Nottinghamshire CCC Are a laughing stock come to David Lloyd west Bridgeford and watch these professional cricketers work out 😳
ReplyDeleteThey were the laughing stock of Trent Bridge yesterday.
DeleteIt's time membership proposed a clear out of coaching staff and made it clear if ignored then no renewals
ReplyDeleteIf this shambles continues the Notts members
ReplyDeleteShould call a EGM & a total vote of no confidence in the top table & committee
In which have been parachuted in by the CEO not the committee or the members,
Governance they don't have a clue embarrassing for all involved in this process
There's over month now before Notts return to Trent Bridge. That's plenty of time for the ire of the membership to ebb away and be forgotten again and it'll be back to good old Peter and good Mick again, happy days.

ReplyDeleteYes the back slappers club is certainly thriving at Notts . They are all doing such a wonderful job -( so they think!)
If it was a football club instead of a cricket club then most of the top table would have been cleared out by now!
