Durham Cricket Vitality T20 Blast at Trent Bridge Win 4pts Report

11/07

NOTTS TOPPLE TABLE TOPPERS

Notts kept their faint hopes of T20 qualification alive with a comfortable seven wicket victory over table toppers Durham at a sweltering Trent Bridge last night.

Durham won the toss and elected to bat in front of a crowd of around 5,000. The slow pitch as the one used for Notts 1-wicket victory over Leicestershire 5 days before. McCann and Stone came in for James and Farhan - on paper Notts had a much better balanced team.

Clark top edged a boundary off Pennington (Radcliffe Road End) and two balls later hit him for six into the Smith Cooper Stand. The last ball was a cover driven four for Clark, 14 off the over. Clark pulled Stone for six over long leg; 10 off the over. Lees scooped Pennington (2 0 23 0) for four and next ball off drove him for four, 11 off the third over. At 33-0 off 3 overs – this was the best it got all night for Durham.

Lees (11) skied Montgomery's first delivery straight to Patterson-White at mid-off (33 for 1). McKinney (3) became his second victim of the over skying him straight into Moores gloves (37 for 2). Clark hit Patterson-White to the point ropes and then smashed him for six over long on, 10 off the 5th over. Ackermann departed for a golden duck brilliantly caught one handed above his head by Haynes at mid-off - Sams the bowler (47 for 3). Clark pulled Sams to the square leg ropes. Durham 52 for 3 off 6 overs.

Rhodes was dropped on 1 a difficult caught and bowled chance to Harrison - four off the 7th over. McCann conceded four off the 8th over – his only one of the night. Harrison conceded five singles in the 9th over. Top scorer Clark (44 off 27 balls, 4x4, 3x6) hit Montgomery straight to Harrison at long on; 70-4 off 10 overs.

Patterson-White went for four and a leg bye off the 11th over. Robinson pulled Montgomery for six over square leg; 13 off the 12th over. Harrison conceded three plus a leg bye in the 13th over. Haynes diving low to his left took an excellent catch on the square leg ropes off Sams to remove Rhodes (18); Durham 98 for 5 off 14 overs. Rhodes innings was somewhat turgid with no boundaries and burning 30 balls out of the Durham innings. Robinson switched hit Patterson-White (3-0-20-0) for four; six off the 15th over. Neesham hit Montgomery for six over mid-wicket. Robinson (22) was caught at cover by Stone off Montgomery (4 0 30 4) (111-6), eight off the 16th over. Career best figures for Montgomery – who now has 13 wickets @18.38 in this year’s Blast. Aldridge hit Montgomery for six over backward square leg. Neesham hit Harrison (4 0 29 0) for a straight four and then a six over square leg, 21 off the 17th over including three byes.

Neesham hit Sams to the square leg ropes. Aldridge (13) hit him for four over backward point but was leg before to the Australian off the very next ball (143 for 7); 11 off the 18th over. Stone (2 0 14 1) took a brilliant caught and bowled in the sun running towards the 30-yward circle at mid-wicket to remove Potts (1); 144 for 8. The third outstanding catch of the innings. Four and two byes off the 19th over. Neesham (29) was caught low down at square leg by Harrison off Sams (154 for 9). Sowter (3) went for a two off the last ball but was run out by a direct hit by Moores who ran towards fine leg. Durham 156 all out off 20 overs – Parkinson 0 not out. A disappointing score for the Northern Section pace setters – although 52 off the last five overs at least gave them some hope. Sams, finely hitting form, followed his pleasing performance against the Foxes with his best T20 figures for Notts (4 0 26 4) – he is joint leading wicket-taker for Notts in the Blast with Montgomery – his 13 wickets coming at 35.15 apiece.

Parkinson (Radcliffe Road End) conceded four off the opening over. McCann (3) was caught behind by Robinson off Potts (6 for 1). Haynes cover drove Potts for four; five plus a leg bye off the 2nd over. Parkinson went for three singles in the 3rd over. After a dot ball, Clarke drove Ackermann for a straight six and next ball blasted a six over extra cover. The fourth delivery went for 4 through point. The fifth ball was a four through extra cover; 21 off the 4th over. Ackermann a thorn in Notts side throughout 2025 having a rare poor game against the Green and Golds and unsurprisingly was not given another bowl. Notts up and running. Clarke lofted Neesham for four over mid-on. Clarke was dropped on 30 low down on the run by Aldridge on the point ropes off Neesham; 8 off the 5th over. Haynes smashed Potts for six over long on, eight off the 6th over. Notts 50 for 1 at the end of the powerplay – well on their way.

Clarke hit Sowter for a straight four and lofted him for four over mid-wicket, 12 off the 7th over. Haynes lofted Aldridge for a straight four. Clarke (43 off 26 balls; 5x4, 2x6) ramped Aldridge into Robinson's gloves who was diving to his left (69 for 2), eight off the 8th over. The second wicket had added 63 in 6.1 overs. Clarke is Notts leading T20 run scorer in 2025 with 402 runs @33.50 with a strike rate of 165.43. Parkinson went for five singles in the 9th over. Sowter went for four in the following over. Notts 79 for 2 off 10 overs.

Neesham conceded four in the 11th over. Henriques played a lofted cover drive for 4 off Sowter (4-0-32-0), seven off the 12th over. Haynes guided Parkinson (4-0-21-0) for a six over square leg, nine plus a leg bye off the 13th over. Henriques caressed Aldridge for four through backward square leg; 10 off the 14th over. Haynes hit Sowter to the mid-wicket ropes, nine off the 15th over. Henriques hit Aldridge (3-0-29-1) for six over long off; 11 off the 16th over.

Henriques (43 off 33 balls; 2x4, 2x6) hit Neesham for six over backward square leg but then skied a slower ball from the Kiwi straight to Potts at backward point (140 for 3); 11 off the 17th over. Henriques, clearly having mobility problems had played the perfect innings to support Haynes rotating the strike well and utilising all his T20 experience. The third wicket partnership had put on 71 in 9 overs.

Moores was swishing at thin air but conveniently Potts bowled a wide down the legside which went for four. Haynes got his 50 off 38 balls with a single off Potts (3-0-22-1), nine off the 18th over. Haynes lofted Neesham (3.4-0-32-1) for four, then ran a single. A dot ball followed then at 21:12 Moores (7 not out) found the square leg ropes – Notts (159-3) winning with eight balls to spare. Haynes’ with a mature knock of 55* (off 40 balls, 5x4, 2x6) was the top score of the night. Notts six wins from 12 games, but with the second poorest run rate in the group, Notts will need to win their last two games and hope a series of results for the other teams go their way. MAG

  1. 82 NOT OUT
On paper a side of 11.out of those 15 looks unbeatable!? So why on earth have they lost so many times?
Are we picking the right 11 players but playing them in the wrong order- batting and bowling? Making it into the Blast quarter finals should almost be a formality for a wealthy club like Notts who have financial clout and excellent resources?

  2. Maybe leave out Farhan, stone, McCann and Henriques?
Means wr are lighter than usual on bowling but gives Ben and Sammy a go and recognises that Henriques was not the right signing.

In reality I don’t think he will do that and I think stone farhan King and martindale will be left out.

  3. Looks like we need maximum points from our remaining games to qualify now.

    1. That figure would back-up MAG's assessment. I'd say it was well below the club's expectations, but with the heat many stayed at home I'd guess. 57k have viewed the Youtube stream, the last time I looked.
