Surrey MBC Group A at Trent Bridge Loss 0 pts Report

LORD HEROICS NOT ENOUGH

Notts lost their final 50 over fixture of 2025 to Surrey by the narrow margin of 10 runs at Trent Bridge today.

Surrey won the toss and decided to bat and the same pitch used for the Gloucestershire match. With qualification unlikely Notts rested James and Hutton with Hatton-Lowe and 19-year-old Scunthorpe raised right-arm seamer Tom Giles coming into the line-up. Giles made an impressive debut beating England pair Rory Burns and Ben Foakes for pace. The respective team line-ups made for an interesting game, basically two virtual second elevens batting out in front of a crowd rather than playing in front of one man and a dog.

Hayes (Radcliffe Road) and Lord opened the bowling. In the third over, Burns was badly dropped on 2 by King off Hayes at mid-wicket. In the 6th over, Adam Thomas (8) was bowled leg stump to a well-pitched up delivery from Lord (4-0-23-1), 22 for 1. Unfortunately shortly afterwards, Lord had limp out of the action with a leg injury and never returned to the bowling fray. Foakes hit Hayes for two boundaries in the 9th over. Giles replaced Lord for the 10th over and went for a single. Surrey 45 for 1 after 10 overs.

Martindale came on for the 11th over. Giles picked up his first wicket for Notts with Burns (25) chopping on to his stumps; 54 for 2 after 12 overs. In his next over, Giles sent Foakes’ (20) off stump cartwheeling; 59 for 3 after 14 overs. Three overs later, Sykes (10) was caught behind by Schadendorf off Martindale, 69 for 4. Giles pitching the ball up on a good length and bowling with pace bowled a very impressive first spell for Notts of 6-0-15-2 and made way for Hatton-Lowe for the 22nd over. Gorantla hit two boundaries off Hatton-Lowe, 10 off the 24th over. Pocklington appeared for the 25th over, two off the over. Surrey 100 for 4.

Gorantla (21) was dismissed off the first delivery after the drinks break driving Hatton-Lowe straight to Hameed at cover, 100 for 5. The game looked over as a contest but Josh Blake along with 17-year old Ralphie Albert turned the game on its head whilst adding 146 in 20 overs for the 6th wicket. Albert, educated at Epsom College, is a right-hand bat and slow left-armer and is highly rated and has already appeared for England Under-19s.

The pair initially rebuilt the innings dealing in ones and twos against Pocklington and Hatton-Lowe. Hayes returned for the 32nd over and went for four singles. Albert hit Pocklington for a straight six, nine off the 35th over. Blake hit Hayes for consecutive fours, 11 off the 36th over. Martindale (7.4-0-25-1) came back for the 37th over and twice beat Albert’s outside edge but pulled up lame with what appeared to be severe cramp. Frustrating as he bowled by far and away his best spell for Notts. He then left the field 20 minutes before reappearing. Slater (0.2-0-2-0) completed the over. Giles returned and a single for Blake took him to 50 off 56 balls – nine off the 38th over. But the youngster instead of sticking to what served him so well earlier resorted to bowling too many short pitch balls and his last four overs went for 45. Pocklington conceded five off the 39th over. Giles went for eight - Surrey 184 for 5 off 40 overs.

Hatton-Lowe returned for the 43rd over and conceded 16 - Albert reaching his 50 off 53 balls with an offside two and finding the ropes twice and Blake added a further boundary. Blake hit Giles (10 0 60 2) for a straight four and Albert hit him for consecutive legside sixes ; 21 off his last over. Albert on 77 was dropped by King at deep mid-wicket off Pocklington- another sitter; six off the 45th over. Blake (72 off 77 balls; 6x4) was lbw to Hatton-Lowe; 246 for 6 in the 46th over. Albert hit Pocklington (10 0 57 0) for a straight six; 12 off his last over. Hayes conceded four runs off the 48th over. Albert (96 off 75 balls; 7x4, 4x6), on the verge of his ton, hit a full toss from Hatton-Lowe straight to King at deep mid-wicket who this time held onto the chance (264 for 7). Albert who did not bat in his sides victory at Derby on Friday had achieved Surrey’s highest ever individual score for a maiden List A innings.

Barnwell hit a short ball from Hatton-Lowe (8 0 63 3) for six over mid-wicket, 15 off the 49th over. Barnwell (13) skied Hayes (10-0-57-1) to backward point where Slater took the catch (286 for 8) – 10 off the last over. Surrey 289 for 8 off 50 overs with Taylor on 16 and Karvelas on 0. A tight game was in the offering.

Taylor (Radcliffe Road End) and Karvelas opened the bowling. Slater (4) was caught at first slip by Burns off Karvelas (on-loan from Sussex), 10 for 1 in the 2nd over. Haynes hit consecutive boundaries off Taylor in the 5th over. Martindale after his early tribulations was hit in his wedding bells and retired hurt on 10 with Notts 27 for 1 off 5.2 overs. Hameed (2) was caught down the legside by Blake off Karvelas (6-0-27-2); 39 for 2 in the 8th over. Like Friday Notts made a bad start and stood at 50 for 2 off 10 overs.

Majid and Barnwell came on for the 13th and 14th overs respectively. King straight drove successive fours off Majid, nine off the 15th over. Haynes (38) was stumped by Blake off Majid, 78 for 3 in the 17th over. It looked a close call, Haynes’ Notts leading run scorer in the 2025 Metro Bank with 473 runs @59.12. Schadendorf joined King in the middle and the pair batted well adding 85 in 14 overs for the 4th wicket to put Notts back in the game.

Albert came on for the 23rd over and a full toss was hit by Schadendorf for four through mid-wicket. Another two fours followed for both batsmen; 13 off the over. Schadendorf hit Barnwell (6-0-32-0) for six over extra cover and a four through backward point; 15 off the 24th over. Notts 132 for three off 25 overs.

Sykes had King hitting him for six over extra cover; nine off the 26th over. Both Schadendorf (50 off 46 balls) and King (50 off 67 balls) achieved their milestones in the 30th over bowled by Sykes. Notts 162 for 3.

Schadendorf with a List A best 51 (off 48 balls, 5x4, 1x6) attempting a sweep shot off Albert top edged to keeper Blake, 163 for 4 in the 31st over. Martindale returned to the crease with Haynes as his runner but clearly was greatly incapacitated not being able to move his feet and played out a maiden to Sykes. Nine runs came off the next two overs. Martindale (15) drove Albert to Karvelas at extra cover who took the catch above his head, 179 for 5 in the 35th over. Albert after his 96 earlier now had two wickets with his left-arm spin.

Notts were losing their way losing 4 wickets for 20 runs in 4.5 overs. Hatton-Lowe (2) reverse swept Sykes and was caught by Albert at backward point, 186 for 6 in the 36th over. Pocklington (3) was stumped by Blake off Sykes, 190 for 7 in the 38th over. The limping Lord came out with Schadendorf as his runner and edged his first delivery from Sykes for four. Crucially, King was lbw to Sykes for a List A best 67 (off 89 balls, 5x4, 1x6), 199 for 8. Lord lofted Sykes for 4. Notts 204 for 8 off 40 overs needing an unlikely 86 off the last 10 overs with only two wickets standing.

Despite his leg injury, Lord after his impressive efforts against Worcestershire repeated his feat by scoring an undefeated 72 (off 42 balls, 5x4, 4x6). He should be seriously considered next season for the T20 team, Notts desperate for hard hitting all-rounders who can take wickets. Lord the leading wicket-taker in the Metro Bank competition took 12 wickets @33.50 (6.16 RPO) and backed it up with 217 runs @54.25. Peter Moores please take note. He shepherded the tail adding 50 in 8.1 overs with Hayes and then an unbeaten 30 in 2.4 overs with last man Giles.

Lord launched Sykes (9-1-44-3) for six over mid-wicket; 8 off the 42nd over. Majid came back for the 43rd over and went for 4 singles. Taylor conceded a single off the 44th over. A full toss from Majid was hit by Lord for six over mid-wicket; 10 off the 45th over. Taylor conceded ten off the 46th over including a leg glanced four by Lord. Lord hit Majid for 4 through wide long on, nine off the 47th over. Hayes (11) top edged a pull shot to keeper Blake off Taylor , 249 for 9. Lord got to his 50 off 32 balls with a six over mid-wicket off Taylor, a leg glance for four followed, 14 off the 48th over. Majid (9-0-54-1) conceded five singles in the 49th over. Notts needed 23 off the last over bowled by Taylor (10-0-67-1) and scored 12 – the fifth ball was hit over the mid-wicket boundary the fourth six for Lord. At 18:42 a single for Lord completed the entertaining contest where Lord and Giles in particular impressed. Notts, 279-9 (Giles 5*), had lost by a narrow margin after letting Surrey off the hook after they stood at 100-5 at half-way house. They will regret putting down two sitters and bowling too many half trackers in the last 15 overs. Surrey took advantage of the worn pitch bowling 28 overs of spin. Notts had Patterson-White, Harrison, Farhan and McCann taken off them due to the wretched 100. Electing to allow Montgomery to go down the A52, Pocklington was their only spin option. He did well taking 11 wickets @32.54 in 8 games during the competition

Notts who miss the last round on Tuesday currently lie fifth in the Group A table with all hopes of qualification gone. They now face a 15-day break until their competitive fixture. MAG

There ought to be a bumper crowd for this game as there's a street food festive occurring around the ground (but mainly in the TBI back car park area).

The squad is likely to be as below as the Trent Bridge and Edgbaston franchises are playing on the same day.

If Notts win this game, we can enter the realm of fantasy in thinking that we might still qualify for a quarter-final place but mathematically (at this time ) we still can.

Haseeb Hameed
Ben Slater
Ben Martindale
Jack Haynes
Lyndon James
Sam Seecharan
Sammy King
Dane Schadendorf
Travis Holland
Joe Pocklington
Rob Lord
Byron Hatton-Lowe
Brett Hutton
Tom Giles
James Hayes

Surrey, ravaged more than anyone else by the other competition, have now resorted to borrowing players that have already played in this year's competition for rival counties - Ari Karvelas (Sussex), and have dipped even deeper into wealth of youth players, including snooker legend Jimmy White's grandson, Ralphie Albert.

  2. 82 NOT OUT
THE HINDERING 100Comp has certainly downgraded the Metro Cup sides that Counties are able to put out . But the Notts youngsters given a chance have not let us down . They have given us some very entertaining cricket . The 50 over Metro Cup needs to survive . How long does the current sponsorship deal last ?

    1. Metro Bank sponsorship until end 2026 according Mr Google AI...

    2. 82 NOT OUT SO WE ARE OK with Metro Bank for another year at least .Its probably a cheap competition to sponsor considering the pretty reasonable media exposure created. I wonder if more Counties would accept a reduction in four day matches to 12per season providing extra 50 over Metro Cup matches were allocated ?

  3. Thought mag’s headline may have been “Ralphie Albert White on cue for Surrey”

  4. Enjoyed seeing the second xi plus 3 of the first team giving it such a good go today. The policy had clearly been to trust in them and not spend on overseas and I’d support that. From what o saw all the bowlers had decent actions and, if allowed, could mature into first team options. But will they be given the time.
I also think Sammy King and Ben M have the look of first teamers about them - as well as Dane. But they all need time and trust, and the chance to play more often.

    1. Yes, I thought that was a little ironic also Rich……of course ours is that long as we’ve not qualified for the latter stages of both the Vitality blast 💥 and Metro 🚇 Bank 🏦 - guess all we can do focus on the 16.4 now as on Notts Twitter I seem to be bombarded with Joe Rooooooot wearing a crisp packet shirt ? Er, on second thoughts stuff that tripe !!!!
