Ball's Broken foot sends plans into disarray.

Jake Ball has broken a bone in his foot, side-lining him for an estimated 6 weeks. Mick Newell admits this is a set back for his T20 plans.

Perhaps this set back will prompt an exploration of the overseas market by Mr Newell(?)

With no Siddle, Fletch or Andre for the T20 Blast, their services being reserved for Championship games (Newell) – it means Outlaws must use Carter, Gurney, Shahzad, Mullaney and Patel with no safety net of any part time bowling options when one or two bowlers become expensive - Dave Hussey and his off-spin hasn't been replaced (previously replaced by Adam Voges' Chinamen) - the balance again is awry.

Other counties have / are recruiting one or two overseas players whereas Notts aren’t for the re-vamped T20 competition, why?.

T20 debuts look, currently, to be on the cards for either Brett Hutton or Luke Wood at some point in the  coming weeks.

The Famous Four Decide

With the new England selection committee (Messrs Moores, Whitaker, Fraser and Newell) convening to select the one day squad to take on Scotland at Aberdeen (9 May) and onwards to play Sri Lanka (20 May - 3 June), who will they choose?

v Warwickwickshire LV= at Trent Bridge

Warwickshire race to a 7 session win as Notts subside.

Notts subsided in 90 minutes this morning as the remaining seven wickets only added a further 75 runs. More happily Notts avoided a points reduction for producing a below average pitch and for slow over rate; a sensible conclusion on a pitch that offered little physical danger to the batsman. Ultimately the difference between the sides was Ian Bell’s batting on day 1. With Andre Adams missing for at least another fortnight, the balance of the side must be addressed; the tail in this game was too long. The selection dilemma is further confounded by possible international call ups as England are due to play Scotland next Thursday in Aberdeen. Mick Newell now wearing two selection hats will have his work cut out.

Seconds v Yorkshire at Notts Sports Ground SEC day 2

On a sunny afternoon, I ventured to the Notts Sports Ground to catch some action from Day Two of the Second Eleven Championship match against Yorkshire.

Day One had seen Yorkshire make 206/9 before Matt Fisher (21*) and Ben Coad (23) added a club record tenth wicket stand, at this level, of 43. Earlier in the innings, Notts-born Will Rhodes had made 71 and horse-jockey-esque  Jonathan Tattersall 40. Wickets had been spread across all the seamers with Luke Wood 4/53 having the predominant figures.

Day Two saw a continuation of the Nottinghamshire innings after the loss of Kelsall, Azad and Sam Wood on the first evening. The morning session saw the Yorkshire attack make further in-roads into the Notts batsmen; Will Root 33, Matty Cross  12 and Ajmal Shahzad 8 all out before the afternoon session started with Notts standing 147/6.

At the crease were Adam Tillcock and Brett Hutton, who restarting with just a handful of runs, was the first to find his timing against a spirited eager attack. Tillcock on the other hand took half an hour from the restart before his timing arrived and was then able to out score his partner and dominated the Yorkshire bowling.

Boundaries were aplenty as the the ageing ball was clouted to all parts by both the Notts players. Yorkshire took the second new ball as soon as it was available but the scoring and stroke-play continued from Tillcock; but Hutton did lose his timing for a while with the new ball's arrival. Adam Tillcock's damage wasn't confined to the once supreme Yorkshire  position in the game; the second new ball also suffered, being mis-shapened and ultimately replaced after 21 overs.

Tillcock brought up his century, fittingly with a four and went on the score 115, the 7th wicket partnership worth 164  - a club record against the Tykes - the previous best being 114 where one of the combatants was Dusty Hare. Tillcock went LBW to Josh Shaw, who didn't restrict his use of the short-pitched delivery all afternoon, and the same bowler quickly removed Webster for a duck. When Rich Pyrah removed Brett Hutton for 75, Franks and Luke Wood stood at the crease. The pair had a little fun, at the Tykes expense adding 52 in 36 minutes, dealing largely in boundaries.

Notts ended their innings on 376/9 with Ben Kitt absent.

Before the close the visitors had been reduced to 63/3 still 58 in deficit.

On the final day some resolute batting from the Yorkshiremen ensured the match ended as a draw.

v Middlesex LV= at Lord's

Day Four

With Chris Read carrying a shoulder injury, the last five wickets put up little resistance and set just a meagre 112 target. Middlesex duly won by 10 wickets, out batting (Morgan, Robson and Simpson) and out bowling (Steven Finn) Notts over the 4 days.

Bad news is Read's injury and the disappointing display by the Notts eleven.

One bit of good news - defeat has only 3 less points than a draw and Adam Tillcock scored Notts' first competitive ton today at the Notts Sports Ground against a spirited Yorkshire 2nds attack.

v Lancashire LV Championship at Trent Bridge

Day 4

Winning start to 2014

After a thrilling four days cricket Notts beat Lancashire by 45 runs to get their 2014 championship season off to a winning start.
With such an inexperienced bowling line up Notts can be well pleased with this victory which was set up after their over-par 272 runs batting first up.

Siddle continues the TB Vic-con

Peter Siddle has said in interview that his signing for Notts:

  • fulfilled a desire to play county cricket
  • was influenced by years of positivity back in Australia about Notts and Trent Bridge from his Victorian team-mates Dave Hussey and Darren Pattinson
  • was ultimately swung by Stuart Broad and Graeme Swann.
