On paper Notts have a very power batting line-up, this year
bolstered by the services of Australian opener Ed Cowan who reputedly scores
runs in any condition with a no frills technique; perhaps an ideal foil for the
flamboyance of Alex Hales. When Cowan departs to take on England , Notts
then have the services of an old favourite, David Hussey. Hussey has the
ability to lift the playing level of all the squad by 20 – 30%, just by his
presence, a feel good factor that spreads to the stands around Trent Bridge as well.
Advice says Notts should use former Tyke AJ Shahzad as a strike bowler,
in short sharp bursts as he looks to rebuild his career; AJ remains an interesting signing of a strong
personality coming to a pretty laid back dressing room; if things don’t go AJ’s
way will this spell trouble?
Back to being positive, if Carter and Gurney continue to
progress on the same curve as last year, then Andre Adams will have competition
in the wicket taking department and if Luke Fletcher can shed his problems of
last year then Mick Newell can re-introduce his rotation policy. BUT, the same obstacle
remains, no front line spinner other than Graeme Swann, who when fit again will
be the property of Team England .
Samit Patel isn’t going to bowl many teams out in a fourth innings in August
alas.
In theory Notts should do well in all competitions and if
they avoid injuries to key personnel and the likes of Hales, Lumb, Taylor and Patel fulfill their promise and produce ample runs at a good rate then Adams, Gurney,
Carter, Fletcher and Shahzad can knock over 20 wickets per match with the red
ball. White ball cricket has more scope for luck and freak occurrences to play
their part but with decent weather and a fair rub of the green Notts ought to
be up there with a shout in the YB40 and FLT20 too. Roll on next week.
