OUTLAWS ARE DRAMATIC LAST BALL VICTORS AT OLD TRAFFORD
Notts were unchanged following their victory over Derbyshire. Lancashire won the toss and decided to bat on used pitch with long boundaries. It was obvious by the team selection that the home team expected a slow wicket and named three spinners in the starting line up.
Patel opened up from the Statham End and off the fourth ball Prince was caught at mid off for a single. Lancashire were struggling for runs and off the last ball of the second over, Horton was bowled playing onto Gurney, 4 for two.
Worse followed in over three when Davies was run out without facing a ball as Brown tried to get a second run. The score stood at 15 for three after 4 overs. Over five bowled by Ball went for eight as Karl Brown was monopolising the scoring. By the end of the power play Lancs stood at 36 for three.
Mullaney bowled four consecutive overs from the Pavilion End that went for just 14 runs. In the third of those Brown was caught by Wessels at long on for a 43 ball 51 an innings that contained 8 fours, 70 for four.
Captain Steven Croft and Aussie James Faulkner batted out the remaining 50 balls of the innings adding an unbroken 67. Lancashire never really broke the shackles imposed on them by Notts as Croft finished on 51 and Faulkner on 32. Crucially Notts gave away just a single extra the whole innings a wide from Sam Wood. Gurney finished with one for 27 and Patel one for 31. Lancashire 137 for four a score which was probably 13 below par.
Off the third ball of the third over in the reply Lumb was bowled by slower ball from Zimbabwean Kyle Jarvis, Lumb gone for 11, 16 for one. Notts were being tied down and stood at 28 for one after the six over power play. They could not get the ball past the ring.
The pitch was so sluggish with even the big hitting Hales and Wessels struggling to time the ball. After adding 47 in eight overs Wessels was caught at backward point off Croft for 28. Two overs later a poor shot from Hales saw him depart caught at mid wicket by the juggling Horton off Parry for a 28 ball 30, Notts 80 for four. Worse followed as in the next over an injudicious stroke from Patel off Clark saw him caught at point for nine, 82 for four with 41 balls left.
Dan Christian played and missed five times in 11 balls during his disappointing innings he was then bowled middle stump for nine by his compatriot Faulkner as Notts now needed 33 off 20 balls it was beginning to look a lost cause.
Taylor was scampering runs and Mullaney hit six off four balls before being brilliantly caught on the deep mid wicket ropes by Lilley off Faulkner. The left armer had figures of 4 0 16 2. Notts now needed 21 off 11 balls. Read got the mark with a four as Notts stood at 125 for six with one over remaining. Jarvis having bowled three overs for 18 bowled it from the Pavilion End in front of large partisan home crowd who thought the game was in the bag. Read hit 2 then 4 but then was caught at mid off above his head by Faulkner. Sam Wood came in and ran a bye to the keeper. Notts now needed six off two. James Taylor drove the next ball for four in front of the members and with increasing tension then clipped Jarvis for four over backward square leg off the last ball to win the game in front of a silent and stunned home crowd. Taylor was man of the match with 33 off 21 balls. Notts now have to win their remaining two games and hope Lancashire slip up against either leaders Warwickshire or second placed Worcester. An away quarter final at the St Lawrence is still a Green and Gold possibility.MAG

ReplyDeleteAll-rounder James Faulkner will miss Australia's tour of England and Ireland after being charged with drink-driving.
The 25-year-old, who is playing for Lancashire, was arrested and bailed on 2 July and will appear in court in Manchester later this month.
Cricket Australia said he will not be considered for the touring squad that will be announced next month.
Faulkner, who is not part of the 17-man Ashes squad, accepted the punishment and will avoid a formal hearing.
He received four suspension points, which equates to four limited-overs fixtures that he was likely to have been selected for.
After the Ashes, Australia will travel to Belfast to face Ireland on 27 August before returning to England for one T20 international and five one-day matches.
Once Faulkner has served his suspension, he could be considered for selection again as an injury replacement.
For sure Taylor's final over exploits were impressive and won the match along with Mr Useful's 4 overs for just 14. On a pitch like that what was Ball bowling to go for 9 an over? Rhubarb?

Slightly in Jacob's defence; he does bowl at the most hazardous times for a bowler, during the powerplay and at the death. He also only went for one boundary per over (3 x 4 and 1 x 6) last night - his overs costing 8,7,11,9. Even through, yes he was expensive in the context of that game, but has cost Notts a lot more in some recent games, For example in the Balls of Steel game, his overs cost 13,11,7,7 and the four count went 3,2,1,0 but he did hold his nerve at the end and his last overs were far better (and match winning in that context) and he fully deserved his plaudits.
DeleteAt Leeds he suffered at the hands of Maxwell and co; 1,14,7(11),16 6 x 4 +1 4 LBs 1 x 6 and lets not forget the eternal over against Northants with a no ball off a free hit!
We won :) and confidence must be growing. Confidence breeds success. Just wait and see!
