POSTCARD FROM DARWIN
We have just returned to Gosford, NSW having had a lovely fortnight's holiday based in Darwin , Northern Territory. Cricket is well underway at the "Top End" of Australia unlike here . There is a good Grade competition. Teams play a minimum of 80 overs a day straddling a weekend - 2 innings games . Points arw awarded for first innings leads wins over 2 innings and wickets taken, runs scored. The sun shone constantly in Darwin's 'dry season' with the temperature in the low 30s. I attended on the Sunday at Waratah CC's lovely Gardens Oval ground.
The overnight score when I went was ; Waratah CC 124 ao Darwin CC 5-74.
Darwin CC earned a first innings lead by scoring 152 ao in bowler friendly conditions. The dryness of the wicket aiding spin. Waratah CC "the Redcaps" struck out to try to force a result and notched 9-149 dec. Darwin CC got themselves in trouble against the turning ball and finished on a wobbly 7-60. They won the game though on 1st innings and are top of the local league.
The Oval is a beauty and has good stands. AFL is tremendously popular in the Northern Territory so the venue doubles up.
Meanwhile good luck to the Green and Gold for the rest of the season
cheers
Andy
