Somerset Vitality T20 Blast QF at Taunton Loss

Day 2
GREGORY BOMBARDMENT LEAVES OUTLAWS WITH NO ANSWER

Notts were comfortably beaten in this delayed quarter final by 19 runs after letting Somerset gather an improbable 79 off the last five overs. Harry Gurney (2.5 0 36 0), Notts' best bowler in the competition had an off day being taken off by the umpires after bowling two beamers. Christian not expected to bowl himself then conceded 21 off seven balls. Somerset had got 20 over par finishing with 209 for five. Abell and man of the match Gregory added an unbroken 81 off 5.3 overs. Gregory followed up his 60 off 25 balls with 2 for 29 off his 4 overs. Somerset particularly impressed with their running between the wickets running many twos and putting pressure on the Notts fielders. Their ground fielding was a slicker and faster than Notts. Notts still had a chance whilst Hales was at the crease but once he was out in the ninth over for 45 with Notts 88 for two, Notts hopes had all but gone. Moores blasted 36 off 18 balls but with the asking rate going up exponentially. Notts should not be too disappointed with the result having over exceeded expectation by qualifying for knock out phase with a team weak on batting and crucially not employing a second overseas player who could bat. A rethink is needed for next season.

An unchanged Notts won the toss and inserted Somerset. Matt Carter bowled the first over from the River End and Steve Davies lost his off stump to his second delivery, 0 for one. Trego lofted his fifth delivery for four over long on. Myburgh hit Gurney for consecutive off side fours, the second a full toss and a no ball, 15 for one off 2 overs. Myburgh hit Carter for six over long off, nine off the over. Trego hit Fletcher for four through mid wicket. He perished in the same over the caught by Patel running from mid on for 10, 30 for two off 5 overs. Gurney bowled the next over of the powerplay and conceded three. Fletcher was hit for successive straight fours off Hildreth and then an offside four, 46 for two off 6 overs.

Hildreth hit Patel for four through extra cover, eight off the over. Myburgh (27) in his last game at Taunton was caught at long on by Hales off Sodhi, 58 for three. Mullaney then conceded nine. Abell lofted Sodhi for four over extra cover. Hildreth then hit him for four through square leg, 13 off the over, 81 for three off 10 overs. Patel conceded five plus a leg bye in the 11th over. Hildreth hit Mullaney for a straight four and then a six over square leg. Next ball a full toss got deposited for six in the same area. James Hildreth 50 off 26 balls. Hildreth then departed leg before to Mullaney for 52, but 18 off the over, 107 for four. Anderson pulled Sodhi for four, 114 for four off 13 overs. A poor piece of fielding by Patel on the ropes gifted Abell a four off Carter (3 0 26 1). The next ball went for a legside six, 13 off the over. Big hitting Anderson was caught on the mid wicket ropes by Christian off Patel (3 0 16 1) for six, 128 for five, three off the over.
Enter Captain Gregory
The game though then took a dramatic turn as Gregory destroyed the Notts bowling. Gregory hit Sodhi for huge six over long on, Sodhi 4 0 36 1. Gregory pulled Fletcher for four. Then a three next ball, Abell then ramped him for four, 15 off the over. Gregory hit Gurney for a straight six and then a six over mid wicket. A four followed off a beamer, Gurney taken off by the umpires having conceded 22 off five balls. Christian completed the over, 180 for five, off 18 overs. Another huge leg side six by Gregory this time off Fletcher ( 4 0 44 1). Gregory got to 50 off 20 balls with a two off Christian. The 200 came up as Gregory hit a six off Christian over mid wicket. A Christian no ball was ramped for four by Abell, Somerset 209 for five off 20 overs with Lewis Gregory 60 not out off 25 balls (2 x 4, 5 x 6). Tom Abell a T20 best 46 off 30 balls. Somerset had scored 79 off the last five overs. The feature of the innings was the excellent running between the wickets by Somerset taking advantage of the leaden footed Notts fielding.

Any score is possible with Alex Hales at the crease

Max Waller opened up from the Somerset Pavilion End and conceded six including a swept four by Hales. Wessels hit Jerome Taylor for four through mid wicket, 14 off the over. Wessels (10) was out off Jamie Overton's first ball caught by Waller running back from mid off the ball in the air for an eternity, 20 for one. The next two balls was guided for four by Hales through third man. A short ball from Overton was pulled for four by Hales. Next ball went for another four through third man, 17 off the over. Gregory was hit four four through mid wicket by Libby, 43 for one off 4 overs. Libby almost run out the previous ball, straight drove Taylor for four, eight off the over. Hales pulled Gregory for four. Hales on 35 was badly dropped on the square leg ropes by Abell off Gregory. Notts 59 for one at the end of the power play.

Van der Merwe went for nine off the seventh over. Libby got a extra cover boundary off Waller, 78 for one off 8 overs. Jamie Overton returned and was hit for a leg side six by Hales. Hales (45) though was out in the same over caught at cover by Gregory, 88 for two. Hales and Libby had added 68 in 6.4 overs.
Alex Hales out and so the momentum is lost
Overton had gone for 11 off his second over. Just six singles off the next over bowled by van der Merwe, 95 for two off 10 overs. Waller was hit for four through extra cover by Moores, nine off the over. Moores blasted a straight four off van der Merwe, but only eight off the over. Moores hit Overton for a straight six, but Libby just couldn't accelerate, 121 for two off 13 overs. Waller was hit for six over long off by Moores. Two balls later a six this time into the Colin Atkinson Pavilion but Moores (36 off 18 balls) perished next ball going for the same shot being caught by van der Merwe, 133 for three. Gregory returned but with required run rate now extremely high, Christian (2) holed out to mid wicket caught by Tom Abell, 137 for four.
Notts needed 71 off the last five overs and the ground was getting increasingly excited and vocal. Libby (41 off 34 balls 3 x 4) was caught in the covers off van der Merwe by Myburgh, 144 for five. Libby the find of the competition for Notts could not find the ropes with sufficient regularity. Patel hit Taylor for four through third man. Eight came off the next over bowled by Taylor. Patel holed out to Max Waller at deepmid wicket off Overton for seven. Fletcher (8) then hit a six over long off, but he too departed caught at mid wicket, 165 for seven. Waller got his third catch of the over, this time Mullaney gone for nine, 165 for eight. Next ball Sodhi holed out to deep wicket caught by Abell off Gregory. Carter then hit a six over mid wicket and then got a single. Gurney then edged a four. Notts got 13 off the last over before Gurney was bowled off the last ball by Taylor for 6. Carter 16 not out. Notts 190 all out. Jamie Overton bowling at the right time finished with figures of 5 for 47 off his four overs. MAG

Yes Only Notts ! , I agree, SKY will try to show a ridiculous 5over slog and finish it on the day, but it's gotta stop raining first. Disappointing will not be shown on SKY, so will presumably be Radio Football(sorry, I mean Radio Nottingham) or Dave Doublecorsett and hopefully Johnno on the radio to at least give some real insight into what is going on out there

    1. Yes the forecasts that I've seen suggest constant rain all day on Sunday and it'll have to stop before Sky can get a result on the day.

The vagaries of cricket, they'll never fit the 100 model or TV schedules all of the time!

    2. Sky’s priority will be women’s cricket on Monday presumably! Something called ironically a SUPER league!

Yes Only Notts !, SKY are showing the spectacle of the women's game so any re-arrangement game cannot be shown. Got no problem with the super league, good luck to them, but personally, do not find it very entertaining(a lot of this cannot be helped due the generally speaking, less power in the women's t20 game due to the obvious physical limitations of the players. Having said all that, suspect it's still a lot more entertaining than watching archive footage of our beloved DoC scoring 200 at Derby?

  3. How long has Kevin Nolan got Stoney?Saturday, 25 August, 2018

Well, let's hope the Fat Lady is singing Poker Face and not anything by the Wurzells, but, sadly feel she may be singing its raining men by the weather girls instead? On SKY Wardy and the brass monkeys are ALREADY talking a five over shambles, but let's wait and see what the day brings. Worcs Raptors through to their first ever finals day, as normally bottle the qtrs, and Seabiscuit bowled his customary two overs for them. Also note, he was batting ten for the Raptors, he would be batting seven for the Outlaws.............stop being sarcastic Stonewall, it gets you nowhere

  4. He didn't have that long after all StoneySunday, 26 August, 2018

Yes, MAGs guess it IS the sensible option, a 5 over game is a complete lottery and it's a big prize up for stake, in finals day, after all. My concern, though, is for supporters who went and can not stay over or return tomorrow. IF it was fit at 1758 for a 5 over slog, should they not have gone down this option as they are supposed to finish the game on the day if at all possible. Not a very satisfactory outcome, either way to be perfectly honest

  5. I'd much rather see the full fixture played on the reserve day.

The Wurzells have posted on their Twitter account, some STANDING only tickets are still available at a price of £27.50 What an appalling set up the CACG really is and also it's apparently Somerset v @Trentbridge, so does that mean Lisa, Mick and the Committee are playing for the Outlaws today? On a more interesting point, does anyone know whether Rashid Khan will be available for the Sharks, assuming we stuff the Cidermen today?

  7. Poor bowling by Notts, losing their composure under fire. Captain had a poor day in the field, Samit only bowling 3 overs???
Gregory took it away from Notts with power, pushed the score to 10 runs at least over par. For Notts in the chase once Hales was out, pea shooters and headless chickens weren't enough. However, we've been running either hot or cold all tournament and it just happens we've finished on the cold setting and have probably over achieved considering how poor we have been at times in 2018. Pluses to take away; Tom Moores batting, Jake Libby 2.0 and Ish Sodhi won't be back again surely cos we need an International big hitter next year.

  8. Gutted the #Outlaws didn’t make it to finals day Tbh we have been to inconsistent No doubt the talent is there & let’s not forget 190 is a good score But on the day Somerset played better Can’t win every year & good luck to all those involved in the final

  9. Decent effort from NOTTS to reach the qf
Far to inconsistent during the competition
Didn't take enough wickets in powerplay & lost to many early wickets.
Improved when Hales came in & Libby was moved up the order.
    Nightmare comp for Samit
T Moores showing what a rising star he is

  10. No finals day for StoneyMonday, 27 August, 2018

The Outlaws express derailed at the qtrs, was never going any further. Totally agree with MAGs, we must review the 2nd overseas option next year, if you can't bat it's ok if your Rashid Khan, but, with big Fletch batting 8, a re think is needed. On the day, though, you just cannot legislate for Harry boy having such a Nightmare on the Cooper Associates Cricket Ground Street, but at 130 odd for 2 with NINE overs and DC, MULL and SAMIT in the hutch still, we really should have taken right down to the final over. We are in transition as Lady Gaga keeps saying(well, that's entirely down to the Princess and the DoC), so I suppose that's about par for the season(2xQtrs finals and hopefully Div One next year). On the positives, Jake Libby 2.0 has proven can play T20, a work in progress, he must improve his boundary hitting options as he became becalmed chasing 12 an over and Junior Moores will be some player in the next few years I suggest

  11. ........................and just one match-winning performance in 2 years from an overseas player ( yes I do mean 'ol "ten an over") is frankly not good enough however much of a dressing room hit he is.
