A Postcard from NSW, Patto Back Downunder

Pattinson and Siddle demolish NSW to win it for Vics..

I attended the first day of this absorbing low scoring Shield game at Drummoyne Oval - a short bus ride from Sydney city centre. Unbelievably the SCG is currently being used [ripped up] for rugby union and rugby league  This delightful ground by Canada Bay marina was bathed in sunshine for a meeting between the top two in the competition . Sadly the crowd was paltry , around 50 on Day 1 truly pathetic notwithstanding it being a Tuesday and hence a working day. I have attached photos for HBD . The bowlers featured are Harry Conway and Trent Copeland. The impressive Conway grabbed a nine wicket match haul on a bouncy track. A highlight for Notts CCC fans was the appearance of James Pattinson in red ball action again. To-day [Thursday] he and Peter Siddle opened the bowling for the Vics and all but won the match for the visitors. Pattinson: 12 overs 5 for 25, Siddle 14 overs 3 for 34. Spots are being competed for in Australia for the Ashes squad. Will Pattinson or Siddle be included? Could Pattinson be donning a Notts cap this English summer?

Victoria 106 & 194 (Matt Short 50)
NSW 135 (Daniel Hughes - Phil Hughes's brother 45) & 102

Former Australian and now New South Wales player Steve O'Keefe was ‘run out’ whilst batting with a runner  in a Sheffield Shield game against Victoria in Sydney on Wednesday.  O'Keefe had a hamstring problem and when he came in at number eleven be brought Nick Larkin with him as his runner, however, O'Keefe pushed his first ball wide of mid-on and called non-striker Peter Nevill through for the run, and then ran down the pitch himself.

O'Keefe and Larkin eventually reached the non-striker's end together, only for O'Keefe to eventually realise he had a runner.  He turned and attempted to make it back to the striker's end, but was well short of his crease when the throw reached the stumps.  Commentators at the game were perplexed by the run out, stating O'Keefe must have forgotten he had a runner.  "His hamstring can't be that bad”, said one, "Because if it was that bad you'd know as soon as you took off that you shouldn't be running”.

  1. I really hope that James returns. I think that our recruitment has been good but remain worried that we wont be able to regularly bowl good sides out twice. Patts would make a world of difference and will strengthen our lower middle batting order too.

Completely agree, a brilliant performer. The concern however is his constant struggles with injuries which must be unbelievably frustrating for the player also.

  3. It does make you wonder why it's taken Notts so long to confirm who will be our overseas player for next season, Could it be they are waiting for someone special ?

    1. Or are we in a bidding war with Yorkshire (and Middlesex, although I suspect they've blown the budget on ABdV for the last meaningful Blast)

  4. If we are talking about Patto,I doubt he would go elsewhere,He clearly loves the club and would love nothing more than to warm up for the Ashes(if picked)at the best ground in the country

Anyway the Yorkies have already signed two South African bowlers,if you add in the likes of Patterson and Coad they seem pretty well stocked for bowlers.

    1. Pillans and Olivier are on Kolpak deals but yes if we are in a bidding war, it'll be for a batter. Notts are more likely waiting on Cricket Australia and permission for Patto to come here for an Ashes warm-up.

  5. Now Jake Ball is aleady being wrapped in bubble-wrap or is that bubble-rap (podcaster), might an approach for Patto be more likely now?
