Worcestershire Rapids RLODC at New Road Loss

OUTLAWS FALL TO WORCESTERSHIRE
Sixth win denied poor shots and bad luck

This game was overshadowed by a serious leg injury to Notts all rounder Paul Coughlin who had to the leave the pitch on a stretcher with what appeared to a hamstring injury. Coughlin was completing a single when the mishap occurred.

Inadequate Outlaws surprisingly opt to bat

The match itself played in mostly dreary conditions was a one sided affair won by the hosts after Notts batting a wicket short made a completely inadequate 121 all out; too many batsman playing poor shots. With showers forecast an under strength Notts surprisingly elected to bat on winning the toss. Notts lost three wickets in the first seven overs as new ball pairing Charlie Morris and Pat Brown wreaked havoc. Those three wickets included Joe Clarke who made unhappy return to New Road, leg before to Morris for nine. Then in the 16th over Parnell settled the game with a three wicket maiden, the South African Kolpak signing removed Patel (to a careless shot) and Mullaney and Moores for ducks. List A debutant Lyndon James and Libby also failed to get off the mark. Parnell removed the last two batsmen Carter and Ball to finish with 9-1-24-5. Top scorer for Notts was Chris Nash who scored 51 off 67 balls (6x4). Nash having just reached with 50, played a poor shot being caught at square leg. Although Worcester lost five wickets in the run chase including two ridiculous run outs the result was never in doubt, as Tom Fell finished 48 not out.

Ducks lining up

Notts won the toss and elected to bat in front of a poor crowd. In came Lyndon James for his List A debut, Coughlin and Wood. Out went Duckett (England duty) and the rested pair Fletcher and Pattinson. Off the last ball of the fifth over, Clarke (9) was leg before to Charlie Morris (New Road End), 25 for one. James lasted three balls but was dismissed plumb leg before to Pat Brown for 0, 30 for 2. The youngster playing across the line. Jake Libby went for a golden duck getting an edge to Morris he was caught by Wessels who was deputising behind the stumps for Cox who was unwell, 31 for three. At the end of first power play, Notts were 43 for 3. Parnell had replaced Brown for tenth over.

Libby is now on a hat trick of golden ducks

Morris having taken 2 for 17 was replaced by d'Oliveira for the 11th over. Patel (12) fell to a familiar dismissal pulling Parnell straight down to deep square leg's throat. Mullaney (0) lasted two balls until receiving an impossible ball, bowled to a ball keeping very low. Moores became the third victim of the over bowled for a three ball duck, 58 for 6 after 16 overs. Coughlin hit his third ball for a straight six, d'Oliviera the bowler. Things got even worse, Paul Coughlin (11) going a quick single pulled up just prior to reaching the crease and appeared to have a serious hamstring injury and was stretchered off with the score on 77 for six after 20 overs. Coughlin who missed most of last season with a serious shoulder injury, then picked up a broken finger against Yorkshire in the first championship game of the season; now faces this third setback.

He is a plainly an unlucky cricketer.

Chris Nash got to his 50 off 66 balls but perished next ball caught low down at square leg by Fell off Mitchell, a poor shot probably due to losing his concentration, 86 for seven. A four through mid wicket by Carter (7) off Mitchell brought up the Notts 100 in the 27th over, but he fell next over caught at short mid wicket by Mitchell off the returning Parnell, 101 for eight. The sun broke through briefly as Ball hit Barnard for consecutive boundaries. Ball (14) edged to first slip as Parnell picked up his fifth wicket. Notts 121 all out off 32 overs. Wood 17 not out.

Wessels and Fell added 25 before Wessels was leg before to Wood (Diglis End) for 18, 25 for one. Wood picked up his second wicket as Ferguson (13) was bowled off his pads, 43 for two in the eighth over. Light rain was steadily falling as Mitchell was caught by Lyndon James at mid off in Patel's first over, 75 for three in the 12th over. Brett d'Oliveira was run out without scoring after misunderstanding with Fell. Nash at square leg throwing to bowler Patel who threw the ball to Moores, 75 for four.

Fell dropped

Fell was dreadfully dropped by Wood at mid on whilst on 23, an absolute sitter. Lunch was taken with Worcester 93 for four off 18 overs with Fell on 33 and Rhodes on 5. The covers were on during the interval, but the light rain stopped prior to the 1515 resumption.

In the first over after the interval, another run out mix up saw Fell send back non striker Rhodes who was run out via a throw from square leg from Mullaney to bowler Carter, 93 for five. But Fell and Whiteley (16*) knocked off the remaining runs easily against Patel and Carter. Worcestershire winning the game at 1532 with 24.5 overs.

Wrap-up warm

Notts will be hoping to bounce back to this first defeat on Friday against Durham. Alex Hales is available for selection. Coach Moores is happy to pick him but Hales selection needs to ratify by the Notts high table. I would expect Fletcher and Pattinson to also return. Wrap up warm for Grantham, for those of you that have never been to Gorse Lane it is pitched high up in the countryside beside the A1 isolated from civilisation, it is very exposed to the elements. MAG

Riki Wessels and the tight Rapids outfit stand between Outlaws and their sixth straight win in the One Day Cup.

Outlaws will loses the services of Ben Duckett who has been whisked away by England, in a squad rejig following Alex Hales' fallout, for the games against Ireland in an ODI and Pakistan in an IT20. James Pattinson is "rested".

The announced squad of 14: a squad without Ben Slater, Ben Duckett, James Pattinson or Alex Hales

    1. Looked painful. Coughlin's reputation preceeded him, so it's no surprise - sick note.

Everything about the "tin-man" is right. He bowls 85mph plus, hits it out of the park and is the best athlete we've had since Chris Lewis the only small problem is you can't get him out on the pitch

The stiffs were not much better earlier either. Terrible shot selection by the top order especially Budinger. Does anyone know whether Rossouw is related to Rilee or just a name coincidence?Awful to watch Footy toiling away in front of 32people. I was convinced his homecoming would have been a success after his stint at the Kia Oval

    1. I don't know, but Footitt apart, that was a very young Notts XI. I think with Dal and Marshall in the Derbyshire side, they had more experience playing for Notts, than Notts did.

  5. Was that a tactical defeat by Outlaws? It now lookslike we need Alex Hales back ASAP.

    1. The ordering of the news items on NottsCCC website points to that.

Yes now Pravda are telling the truth instead of spouting the making himself unavailable for personal reasons rubbish it looks certain that Alex will be back at a wet and windy Grantham tomorrow.

  6. Nash apart, this was a total no-show. Bad day at the office par excellence. Yes, I also had the impression that this was 'a tactical defeat'. Almost as if someone had taken a look at a depleted and weary team and said "don't try too hard chaps"
