Derbyshire Falcon Vitality T20 Blast at County Ground, Derby Win

HARRY GURNEY CAREER BEST CLIPS FALCONS' WINGS AND LEAVES OUTLAWS FLYING HIGH TO ANOTHER WIN, IN THE RAIN AT DERBY

The experienced pairing of Alex Hales and Harry Gurney along with Ben Duckett were the main architects of a comfortable Notts victory by 27 runs at a wet County Ground in Derby last night. The match was played in near continuous light drizzle making life difficult for the bowlers who were constantly using a cloth to dry the ball.

Derby won the toss and inserted Notts. Hales and Duckett batted excellently as Notts got an above par total of 198 for five. The pair adding 92 for the second wicket in 8.5 overs Pakistani left hand bat and slow left armer Imad Wasim made his debut for Notts replacing Luke Wood. He impressed with bat, ball and in the field and looked a good acquisition to the Notts line up. Imad appeared for Papplewick and Linby in the NPL 12 years ago.

When Derby batted Luis Reece impressed with 61 off 42 balls (4x4, 3x6) as Derby stood at 90 for one off 10.5 overs. Gurney who had earlier removed Fynn Hudson-Prentice returned and used all his experience to have a hand in wickets 2, 4, 5, 6 and 7, finishing with career best T20 figures of 5 for 30 as Derby closed on 171 for eight.

Slow left armer Mark Watt bowled the first over from the City End and conceded seven including a boundary for Clarke. With light rain now starting to fall, Rampaul went for 11 including a four for Hales and an edged boundary for Clarke. Van Beek replaced Watt and conceded eight with a leg side boundary for Hales the highlight. Another eight runs came off the fourth over bowled by Rampaul including a four for Clarke. Van Beek bowled his second over as Notts stood at 40 for 0 after five overs but he went off the field with a shoulder injury after fielding the ball on the boundary and landing awkwardly . Joe Clarke (27 – 19 balls) fell to last ball of the power play, skyIng Hudson-Prentice he was caught by keeper Daryn Smit, 51 for one.

Six runs came off the seventh over bowled by leg spinner Matt Critchley. Alex Hughes went for four singles in over number eight. Duckett hoisted Critchley for six over long on and a four through square leg, 75 for one after 9 overs. Hales hit Hughes for a straight six into the Racecourse End sightscreen, 91 for one after 10 overs. This was the perfect platform for an assault for the second half of the innings.

The Notts 100 came up with another straight six for Hales, this time off Watt, 13 off the over. Hales got to 50 off 34 balls with a single off left armer Reece, eight off the over. Duckett was dropped on 30 by Hudson-Prentice in the covers off Watt. Hales hit the Scotsmen for six over long on, 123 for one after 13 overs. Eleven came off in the 14th over bowled by Alex Hughes. The returning Critchley was launched into the East Midlands Demolition Stand at mid wicket by Ben Duckett. Then after a stand of 92, Hales (63) was caught right on the mid wicket ropes by Hudson-Prentice off Critchley, 143 for two after 15 overs. Hales who has impressed in all his five white ball appearances for Notts had faced 42 balls with five fours and three sixes. Duckett got to his 50 off 30 balls. Reece returned and went for 10. Christian (6) holed out to Hughes at mid off, Critchley the bowler, 154 for three. Critchley gave Notts five wides, 167 for three off 17 overs. Tom Moores (3) lost his off stump as Rampaul returned from the Racecourse End, 167 for four. The Trinidadian going for four in the 18th over. Duckett (64) hit Watt for four but perished next ball, well caught by substitute Anuj Dale on the mid wicket boundary, 175 for five. Duckett played the best knock of the night facing 40 balls (6x4, 2x6). Patel joined Imad as 23 came off the final 10 deliveries of the innings. Patel hit a straight six and offside four from his first two balls from Watt. Notts closed on 198 for five off 20 overs as 11 came off the last over including an offside four for Imad. Patel 14 not out and Imad 10 not out. None of the Derby bowlers really impressed with spin twins Watt and Critchley having combined figures of 8-0-90-3.

Hudson-Prentice hit a long hop from Carter to the boundary off the first ball of the Derbyshire innings. The former Sussex man hit another four finding the mid wicket ropes off the off spinner, 10 runs off the first over. Imad came on from the Racecourse End and went for five singles. Five runs were conceded off Ball's first over. Godleman hit Gurney for six over square leg. Notts picked up their first victim as Hudson-Prentice was caught slicing to Jake Ball at extra cover off Gurney for 17, 31 for one after four overs. Reece hit Carter for a six over long off, eight off the over. Reece pulled Ball for six and then hooked him for four off the following ball, 53 for one at the end of the power play.

Imad conceded nine in the 7th over. Godleman was dropped on 18 via a one handed attempt in the covers by Duckett off Christian"s first ball, injuring himself in the process, nine off the skipper's first over. Six came off Carter's third over. Patel went for seven, 84 for one after 10 overs. Derby needing 115 off the last ten overs.

Godleman (28) holed out on the square leg ropes, Libby the catcher, Gurney the bowler, 90 for two after 11 overs. Reece hit Patel over long off for six. Reece getting to 50 in 29 balls. Christian conceded 8 off the 13th over. Wayne Madsen (9) was caught at long off by substitute Luke Wood, off the returning Imad the bowler, 112 for three after 14 overs. Imad 3-0-16-1. Reece and du Plooy found the ropes three times in Carter's last over, 126 for three after 15 overs. Matt Carter 4-0-38-0. Reece was dropped on 59 at deep square leg by Ball but was dismissed next ball caught above his head by Moores off Gurney with a failed scoop shot. Reece 61, 134 for 4 off 16 overs. With the rain now much heavier, thirteen came off the 17th over bowled by Jake Ball. Critchley was caught on the ropes by Christian off Gurney for three off the third delivery of the left armer’s over. Two balls later, Alex Hughes was run out without facing a ball, 154 for 6. Hughes being run out following a smart throw from bowler Gurney. Next ball du Plooy (27) was bowled by Gurney with his final delivery, 154 for eight. Gurney 4-0-30-5 the fourth best figures in Notts T20 history, Graeme White leading the way with 5 for 22 against Lancashire at TB six years ago. The nineteenth over was bowled by Jake Ball from the City End and he conceded eight, the Welbeck Wizard Notts’ most expensive bowler on the night with 4-0-41-0. It was left to Dan Christian (3-0-24-0) to bowl the last over. Off the second ball, non striker Mark Watt was sent back by Smit and was run out by the captain. 163 for eight. Christian bowling with a soaked ball, bowled a beamer as Derby closed on 171 for eight with Smit on 11 and Rampaul on 1. Notts who lie third in the table, had won once more in what was a very professional performance. Credit should also go to umpires Mallender and Watt for allowing the full house the full 40 overs despite the inclement weather, the rain being quite heavy in the closing stages. Unfortunately today’s forecast against whipping boys Leicester is fairly dire. MAG

Hopefully we won't have to wait another 79 days for a win after Wednesday night's comfortable win over Northamptonshire. On the same night Falcon took a mauling off the Bears at Edgbaston so their electic fusion of a team will be looking rebound off of Outlaws.

As is Peter's way, Outlaws are unlikely to make any unforced changes. The squad remains the same 14.

Alex Hales
Joe Clarke
Tom Moores

Ben Duckett
Jake Libby
Chris Nash
Samit Patel
Dan Christian
Luke Wood
Luke Fletcher

No news as to when Paul Coughlin is likely to be listed in a squad.

Well this is their BIG match along with the Vikings at Chesterfied(it even says BIG loal derby on their promo guff in case anyone didn't know). A strange outfit this year of has beens, Kolpaks pseudo overseas and a failed Notts Academy lad assume the usual tactic of playing in the middle and shoving the boundaries out will apply and they'll hope to give Dads Army the run around in the outfield. As long as our batting fires, we win the game, plain&simple?

  2. Footitt departs , costing the club probably in the region of £50,000 a game, second time round, excluding his exploits at Lady Bay. Another one of Mr Newell's, value for money, stellar signings.

As for the new recruit from Pakistan, does that indicate that Samit is about to depart for pastures new?
