Seconds Crash out in Semi Final

An extra friendly for Nottinghamshire’s second string has been announced, with a game against Sussex Seconds scheduled between September 2-4 at Lady Bay.

Notts' second-string bowed out of T20 Finals Day at the semi-final stage. suffering a 105-run defeat to Glamorgan at Arundel.
Having won the toss and decided to bowl, the Outlaws were frustrated by Glamorgan's first-wicket stand of 73 before Chris Gibson had Jeremy Lawlor (38) caught and bowled.
Any hopes that this would trigger a Glamorgan capitulation were thwarted when Tom Cullen compiled a significant partnership with Nick Selman before playing Patterson-White into the palms of Saad Ashraf for 41.
It was Selman who would prove to be a thorn in Notts’ side as he catapulted his way to 115 from just 66 balls including 13 boundaries (7 fours and 6 sixes).
And wickets from Jack Blatherwick and Lyndon James weren't enough to stop Glamorgan breaching the 200-mark, as they closed on 204-4.
A stiff challenge for Notts was made even tougher when Ben Slater left the crease prematurely, Roman Walker claiming the first of his brace of wickets to leave Notts 4-1.
A couple of wickets from Kazi Syzmanski in the third over dealt the green and golds a crushing blow Chris Gibson (0) and Chris Nash (5) both being sent back to the pavilion with Notts reeling on 8-3.
Lyndon James and Liam Patterson-White would soon follow, with the score on 39-5 as the innings passed its halfway point.
Syzmanski completed his haul of four wickets when Carter (5) and Blatherwick (4) were sent packing in the 15th over.
Jayden Schadendorf stemmed the tide with a knock of 45, but the innings would end prematurely when Jack Potticary was clean-bowled, the green and golds being dismissed for 99.

Seconds Qualify for Finals Day

Nottinghamshire’s Second XI confirmed that they would head to T20 Finals Day on Thursday 15 August as table-toppers with a brace of wins at Grantham.
The green and golds were already guaranteed a place at the showpiece event after victory over Worcestershire on Monday, but a pair of triumphs over Lancashire guaranteed first place in the group, and a semi-final against Glamorgan at Arundel.
Notts will contest the opening semi-final at 10.30am, with the victors facing either Hampshire or Durham in the final from 5pm.
Notts named Luke Fletcher, Jake Ball and Zak Chappell in their side for the first clash of the day, and the trio’s pedigree shone through as Lancashire were reduced to 15-4 inside five overs despite winning the toss.
Chappell (2-10) and Fletcher’s opening burst would account for the first three wickets to fall, before Jake Ball removed Tom Bailey shortly after coming into the attack.
Lancashire’s England batsman Haseeb Hameed would offer brief resistance, but when he was caught at cover off Liam Patterson-White (1-14) for 15, the visitors’ chances of setting a competitive total receded further.
Lancashire would be dismissed for just 70, with the remainder of the wickets being taken by Ball (3-17), Fletcher (2-14) and Kashif Ali (2-15).
Ben Duckett, skippering the Seconds, would ensure Notts made light work of the chase.
Opening alongside Ben Slater (12), the left-hander smashed 42 runs off 27 balls, finishing the match in style by hitting his second six of the day.
Duckett was accompanied by Chris Gibson in the middle as Notts secured a nine-wicket wictory with 9.3 overs to spare.

The result confirmed Nottinghamshire’s place at the head of the North Group, and the hosts would consolidate their supremacy over Lancashire with a second win in the afternoon.
Opting to bat first, Duckett would not repeat his earlier heroics, removed by Stephen Parry with the first ball of the innings.
But Chris Nash and Ben Slater combined well to push the score on in the opening overs, the former scoring 35 of the first 38 runs of the innings before being adjudged lbw to Tom Hartley.
Slater, in the company of Liam Patterson-White (15) and Lyndon James, kept the scoreboard ticking over before he was removed four runs short of a half-century, leaving James to continue the momentum through the final overs.
The 20-year-old finished unbeaten on 37 as Notts made 145-6 from their 20 overs.
In response, Lancashire began their innings promisingly, but Chappell (1-18) would again make the breakthrough, dismissing Owais Shah for 20.
Rob Jones enjoyed a more fruitful afternoon, reaching 34 before being trapped lbw by Patterson-White (1-18), but only two other Lancashire batsmen would reach double figures.
Ali was both threatening and economical with the ball, finishing with figures of 4-13, with Jack Blatherwick (2-20) also getting in on the act.
Lancashire reached 111-8 from their allotted overs, leaving the hosts taking a 34-run win into next week's Finals Day.

  1. Having reached Finals Day will the 2nds. play a TRULY 2nd 11 Squad or try to go for victory at all costs? I remember Paul Johnson some Seasons ago sticking to his principles and not packing the Squad with 1st 11 players. Honesty and integrity would dictate that those players who have got us to Finals Day are the ones who will play in the semi-Final and, hopefully, Final.

  2. And I wonder if Arundel will have dried out enough for tomorrow to go ahead?

  4. I don't know why I bothered to make the 400 mile round trip to watch such a dismal; uninspired; boring; lack-lustre display by Notts. It perhaps symbolised everything that seems wrong in the Club. After just 4 Overs Glamorgam were 40 without loss whereas at the same stage Notts were 13 for 3!!! Glamorgan's first wicket went down with the score on 73 - by the time Notts had scored 73 they had lost 6 wickets. It reallty was men against boys with only Schahendord making a reasonable score of 45 off 34 balls, the next highest scorer for Notts was James with 14 and the 3rd one to get double figures was Ashraf with 11. Glamorgan's Selman hit 115 not out with 7 fours and 6 sixes but was twice dropped at least twice, once off Gibson and once off, I think, James. Overall Notts dropped at least 3/4 catches and just nothing went their way - they couldn't build a single partnership and none of the Bowlers performed well with Blatherwick's last Over going for 23 and Gibson's for 21. I would be interested to hear what the Notts Coaches have to say but itseemed like a Side utterly demoralised and who gave up by the 7th Over when Glamorgan had already scored 72 (Notts by contrast had scored just 24 - a third - at the same stage). Can I claim my petrol money back!!!???

  5. Glamorgan won the Final thanks to a good knock by Billy Root who certainly saved the day for them. So at least we lost to the Finalists - small consolation but it was an even longer drive back for the Durham Side who also lost their semi-final match.

It does occur to me as to what exactly are the Rules for who can play in the Second Teams? We had Nash; Slater and Carter - all established 1st team players. Can anyone enlighten me please?

  6. But BG Compton scored 134 Not Out and Kashif Ali 100 Not Out for the 2nds against Northants 2nds in a Stand of over 200!!!! Now that's what we need and this Compton looks a real prospect.
