Yorkshire Vikings Vitality T20 Blast at Trent Bridge Win

OUTLAWS SNEAK WIN IN THE BLISTERING SUNSHINE
On a scorching afternoon where the thermometer topped 30 degrees, Notts held their nerve in front of a crowd 13737, beating visitors Yorkshire by 3 runs. The win guaranteed Notts a place in the quarter finals. When former Notts man Will Fraine hit Harry Gurney for a straight six off the first ball of the last over, The Tykes only needed 6 off five balls but Fraine fell next ball to a superb catch by man of the match Matt Carter. At the death, Jordan Thompson was completely out foxed by Gurney as the last four balls went dot, dot, two, dot as Notts won in dramatic fashion. The pitch having been used for the earlier women's game was slow and sluggish and Notts probably missed a trick by not playing Liam Patterson-White with Imad Wasim missing due to his wedding. Notts somewhat struggled early doors only hitting 50 off the first 10 overs. Opener Joe Clarke got to a scratchy 50 in 46 balls (3x4, 2x6, dropped twice and missed off a stumping chance) but impetus was provided by Jake Libby with 35 off 26 balls (4x4) and skipper Dan Christian with a typically aggressive 31 off 16 balls (1x4,3x6) as Notts got a competitive 148 for seven. Adam Lyth followed his career best bowling of 5 for 31 with 48 as Yorkshire stood at 99 for two off 13.3 overs, needing 50 off the last 33 balls. Matt Carter had been bowled out having conceded 12 singles and bowled 12 dot balls in his four over spell. Gurney, Patel and Fletcher used all their experience in the closing overs as Yorkshire were squeezed and fell just short.

Dropped chance
Notts won the toss and elected to bat, Luke Wood returned to the eleven in place of Jake Ball. Lyth (Pavilion End) conceded just a single off first over, including 4 consecutive dot balls to Hales. Clarke was dropped on 3 at mid wicket by Maharaj off Willey, an easy chance, seven off the over. Hales flicked Bresnan to the fine leg ropes. Three balls later Hales (7) drove Bresnan straight to Maharaj at mid wicket who this time took the chance, 12 for one after 2.4 overs. Jordan Thompson conceded two singles from the fourth over. Ben Duckett tied down skied Bresnan to Kohler-Cadmore at mid on, the left hander out for an 8-ball two, 16 for two. Clarke clubbed Bresnan for four through mid wicket, seven off the over. Willey returned and a poor ball from the left armer was glanced for four by Jake Libby. The Cornishman repeated the shot off the last ball of the over. Notts 30 for two after six overs.

Another drop

Bresnan conceded five off the seventh over, and Maharaj went for four in the following over. Clarke swept off spinner Jack Shutt for four and next ball trying to repeat the shot was dropped on 19 on the square leg ropes by Jack Leaning diving forwards. Maharaj went for four as Notts stood at 50 for 2 off 10 overs.

Missed stumping
Jack Shutt went for seven in his second over. Clarke was missed on a stumping on 25 off Maharaj, the ball striking the pads of keeper Tattersall, four off the over. Libby scooped Thompson for four. The fifty partnership between Clarke and Libby came up in 47 balls. Clarke hit Thompson into the Fox Road. Libby hit Thompson for two, with deafening cheers in the background; England having just won at Headingley. Libby hit Lyth for four through third man. Libby fell for 35, a fine catch by Fraine running from long off Lyth, 82 for three in the 14th over. The third wicket had added 66 in 9 overs. Shutt went for four, 90 for three off 15 overs. Clarke hit Lyth for six, the ball just clearing Will Fraine at long off. Moores (2) skied Lyth to Shutt at short third man, 98 for 4. Clarke (50) fell next ball caught at short fine leg by Shutt off Lyth. Shutt had figures of 4 0 24 0, with five off his last over. Patel edged a four off Maharaj. Christian hit Maharaj (4 0 26 0) for a six over wide long on, 119 for five off 18 overs. Christian scooped Willey for four and six off consecutive balls. A six followed over extra cover, a crucial 17 off the over. Lyth picked up his fourth wicket as Patel (11) was caught at wide long off by Fraine, 136 for six. Fletcher hit Lyth for six over cow corner but perished off the last ball of the innings trying a repeat caught by Pillans at deep mid wicket. Lyth 5 for 31. Notts 148 for 7 off 20 overs. Christian 31 not out off 16 balls.

Lyth hit Wood (Pavilion End) for two fours behind the wicket, eight off the opening over. Carter went for two singles off the second over. Kohler-Cadmore (5) hit Gurney for four but then hesitated over a single and was sent back but he failed to reach his ground run out by a direct him from Patel in the covers, 15 for one. Carter conceded three off his second over. Willey drove Fletcher's first ball for four. Lyth found the extra cover boundary off Fletcher and followed up with a four through backward point, 15 off the over. Wood (2 0 16 0) bowled the last over of the power play but seemingly not fully fit never bowled again, Yorkshire 42 for one off six overs.

Singles
Five singles came off Christian’s first over and four off Carter's third over. Libby was introduced for a solitary over and hit for a straight six by David Willey but next ball Libby bowled the left hander for 23, 59 for two, 10 off the over. Patel conceded nine off his opening over, Yorkshire 71 for two off 10 overs, 21 ahead of Notts at the same stage.

Extras
Lyth hit consecutive fours off Christian (2 0 17 0), 12 off the over. Samit Patel went for 4 in the 12th over. Carter remained frugal 4 0 12 0, all singles, 90 for two off 13 overs. Gurney bowled a wide and then five wides but got Lyth who skied him to Duckett in the covers, Lyth 48 off 39 balls (7x4), 99 for three. Leaning hit Patel for an offside four, but in same over Tattersall was leg before for 15, 108 for four. Leaning hit Fletcher through third man, ten off the over. Leaning drove Patel (4 0 26 1) through the covers, eight off the over. Gurney bowled the 18th over, five off the over. Leaning (20) lost his leg stump to Fletcher, 131 for five. Off the last ball of the over, Bresnan (5) was bowled by Fletcher, 137 for six.

Last over drama

Yorkshire needed 12 to win off the last over bowled from the Radcliffe Road End by Harry Gurney, Will Fraine (13) hit Gurney's first ball for a straight six, but was out next ball falling to spectacular catch by Carter at backward point, the ball spooned up off the bottom of the bat and Carter had to move some distance to take a diving catch, 143 for seven. Thompson played and missed consecutive balls, then scampered a two. With four required off the last ball Thompson only found thin air again. Gurney had bowled four dot balls out of five as Notts won with huge cheers from the crowd; the contest being played in continuous sunshine. Yorkshire 145 for seven Gurney finished with 4 0 29 2 and Fletcher 3 0 31 2. A win at New Road on Wednesday would guarantee a home quarter final. MAG

Will Lizzie Jones have a new song this time, or sing the old one twice again like last time ? Let's make sure we do our job first and foremost, then, perhaps Lanky will have done us a favour by beating those pesky Raptors. Good to see Baz nicely back to form and good to see there's no better place for him than TB. Unfortunately, I suspect he spouts the same platitudes at whatever franchise league he is in around the globe.

  2. Not sure how good the Trent Bridge karaoke machine is and what variety of selections it has. This applies to both Lizzie Jones and Alex Hales...

  3. Well Hales was true to form - after a good Innings at Leicester we can now expect some poor ones - Duckett and Moores also gone cleaply but good to see Clarke get 50. Congratulations to Lyth on getting 5 Wickets. Is 148 a below Par score - we'll soon find out!

    1. Hales plays in the Samit mould, one awesome innings followed absolute dross. Yet the fans still fap themselves into a frenzy over them. T20 has ruined cricket.

  7. A big thank to to MAG and NOTTS VIEWER for the magnificent work they do maintaining this site . Its full of vital information ,along with humourous comments and occasional barbed asides . But all in all its a wonderful read and often supplemented by the faithfull Notts CCC followers - many of whom have extensive knowledge of the game and possess valid views .I do hope the various threads are read by all those connected to the Club including the Committee , playing Staff and the administrators and not forgetting Mr Bracegirdle - who far too often gives the non performing players an easy ride .( sorry Dave - I think your commentaries are excellent in the main ). The Nottingham Evening Post rarely gives in depth coverage to cricket and thus this BLOG is proving very useful in gleaning unbiased views and forthright comments . So keep up the good work MAG and CO. The many long suffering fans of Notts CCC need you more than ever ,especially with yet another relegation staring us in the face ..
Just a word about yesterday at the Bridge and the fantastic weather and attendance to witness the tense victory over Yorkshire . Many of the crowd had an ear or an eye on the amazing proceedings taking place at Headingly .It must have been hard for the players on the pitch to concentrate because of the bursts of applause and wild cheering at events not connected to the action taking place in the middle . Well somehow Notts managed to win ,against all the odds, with 6/7 overs to go .
I mentioned on an earlier thread that I could easily see Notts in the T20 final . Taking part in that would no doubt greatly deflect the calamity of this seasons performances in the 4 day game . Apart from the financial considerations of an appearance in the final two, I am sure that DOC and LISA P are on their prayer mats every night hoping for an exciting end to the season .
So once again many thanks to MAG ,HBD and others (not forgetting Philip M !)for the sheer volume and effort they must in at their own expense .
I have no idea of the 'hits'this site gets but the figures MUST surely be on the increase ?
PS What can you say about Ben Stokes? . From villain to national hero in only a few months . He took his second chance well ( unlike one or two others ) and is reaping the rewards of dedication and superb fitness levels alongside amazing cricket ability . Surely he will win the next BBC Sports Personality of the Year award ?

    1. Yes, 75 not out, what can one say about Ben Stokes. One thing I'll say though is that a Gunn and Moore bat is his chosen weapon. Anyone know why Hales changed? Sponsorship offer or just a heavier bat?

Hope Stokes helmet wasn't G & M. All those bits flying off can't be good.

Oh and well done Notts BTW, and thanks for only conceding 17 rather than the usual 20 from 2 overs from Desperate Dan.

    2. Yes ANONYMOUS - fantastic free publicity for Gunn and Moore . The famous photograph of Ben Stokes punching the air with both arms whilst also holding his Gunn and Moore bat was splashed across nearly all the front pages of the National dailies ! You cant buy that sort of press cover .
Reference Dan Christians bowling . He does get hammered these days in the T20 games - just look at his averages . But I rate him as a Captain and he is still a mega dangerous batsman when quick runs are required .If Notts require 15 from the final over to win a match he would be my choice of Notts current players to face the bowling .
Last year I seem to remember Libby opening the innings along with Hales. I think this combination could be used again . Libby is a slow stater as we all know but he can HIT the ball when required . It might be a good tactic to open the batting with him again and let him give as much of the strike to Hales plus the next man in . just to provide an anchor role for the first overs to establish a decent base .
