WASH OUT
Rain prevented any play on Day 4 meaning Notts came away from the Oval with a draw.
Worst ever since there's been two divisions?
In 2014 Northamptonshire accumulated only 79 points from a 16 match season in Division 1 To beat that Notts would have needed to gain more than 69 points from 14 games for a fair comparison but today the season ended with Notts having lost 10 of their 16 games on just 67 points.

In 2014 Northants lost 75% of games whereas this season Notts lost 71% of their games.
Worst ever or not, Notts are on a miserable run. Changes have to be made to make improvements. Surely, not even our committee can think that the status quo will be fine and we'll bounce straight back without changes to both playing and coaching staff.
ANOTHER TRUNCATED DAY IN LONDON
On another day truncated by the weather with only 55.3 overs possible, Notts closed 325 runs behind with nine first innings wickets standing.
Carter dropped catch
After heavy overnight and morning rain, play started at 1312 with 72 overs to bowl with Coughlin and Mullaney bowling in tandem. Borthwick on 110 was dropped in the gulley by Carter off Mullaney. The new ball was taken with 277 for two after 80 overs with Ball (Pavilion End) and Blatherwick (Vauxhall End). An edged four for Pope off Blatherwick saw him the right hander to his ton off 165 balls. Pope (106 off 169 balls with 13 fours) then checked his shot against Ball and was caught on the square leg ropes by Ben Compton, 292 for three. The third wicket had added 222 in 66 overs. Foakes going for a pull shot off Blatherwick only succeeded in playing on for eight, 311 for four. Will Jacks fell leg before for 17 to Mullaney who had replaced Blatherwick from the Vauxhall End, 339 for five. A slash outside off stump in Mullaney's next over saw Borthwick finally dismissed for 137 off 309 balls (16x4), caught behind by Moores, 350 for six in the 98th over. Borthwick taking full advantage of his let off on day one, when he was caught behind for 16, without the umpire's finger being raised.
Carter dropped catch mk 2
Rikki Clarke was dropped on eight by Carter at second slip off Coughlin, a difficult chance above his head. Tea was taken at 1525 with Surrey 360 for 6 off 102 overs with Clarke on 13 and Clark on 5.
Carter dropped catch mk 3
Carter dropped catch mk 3
After tea Rikki Clarke was dropped on 14 by the usually safe pair of hands of Matt Carter at second slip again off Mullaney, an easier chance this time. Three drop catches on the day for the off spinner. Next over Clarke hit Coughlin for six over mid wicket. Jordan Clarke launched Mullaney for a huge six over long on. Patterson-White finally got to bowl but after three balls Surrey declared on 402 for 6 after 107.3 overs with Clarke on 36 and Clark on 33. Mr Extras with a solid 44. Two wickets for Coughlin and Mullaney.
Notts had 34 overs to bat with Morkel (Pavilion End ) and Rikki Clarke (Vauxhall Enid) opening the bowling. Slater edged three fours through the slips as Notts got off to a nervous start. In the seventh over Mullaney hooked Morkel for six in front of the old gas holder. Next over Mullaney shouldered arms and was leg before to Clarke for 21, 39 for one. After four overs Morne Morkel was replaced by Clark. For the 12th over Plunkett came on for Clarke . The Notts 50 was achieved in the 13th over. In the 19th over off spinner Virdi came on from the Pavilion End and immediately got some turn. Next over, Will Jacks came on making it off spin from both ends. Another spinner appeared next over, with Borthwick coming on with his leg spinners, he bowled a no ball that Compton hit for two then bad light was immediately called at 1748 with Notts 77 for 1 off 20 overs with Slater on 29 and Compton on 16. DependIng on potential time lost tomorrow I would expect the teams to collude and set up some kind of run chase for Notts. MAG
Day 2
DAY 2 AN ALMOST TOTAL WASH OUT
So we had 2 overs...a leg bye and a single to Ollie Pope...and now off for rain..tune in for this evening’s highlights...they will be magnificent - Mark Church
The rain has been joined by thunder and lightning bringing an end to today's prospects of play.
We'll be back tomorrow with Surrey on 248/2. - Surrey CCC
Day 1
POPE & BORTHWICK PARTNERSHIP DOMINATES SHORTENED DAY
Surrey had much the better of the first day against a very weak Notts team with only two survivors from the championship game at The Oval last season (Slater and Moores). The only highlight for Notts was two wickets in the 17th over by pick of the bowlers Paul Coughlin but they failed on take another wicket in the remaining 53 overs as Borthwick and Pope added an unbroken 176 for the third wicket. Pope given two lives by Moores and Slater respectively.
In bright sunshine Surrey won the toss and batted on what proved to be a flat surface. In came Slater, Moores, Patterson-White, Carter and Ball. Out went Nash, Evison, Ashwin, Chappell and Fletcher. Ball (Pavilion End) and Blatherwick (Vauxhall End) opened the bowling. In the ninth over, Mullaney replaced Blatherwick. Mullaney bowled three overs and was replaced by Carter. Ball bowled a seven over spell for 17 runs, he thought he had Stoneman caught behind on 16 but umpire Saggers disagreed. Coughlin replaced Ball and in his second over had Stoneman strangled down the leg side and caught by Moores for 31, 70 for one. Jamie Smith fell in the same over for a four ball duck as Moores took his second catch. Surrey got to 100 in the 26th over. Surrey 117 for two at lunch off 30 overs with Borthwick on 50 and Pope on 21.
Missed stumping
The clouds rolled over after lunch. Carter (Vauxhall End) and Ball (Pavilion End) carried no threat after lunch as Surrey got to 150 in the 40th over. Mullaney replaced Ball. Pope on 38 charged Carter but was was beaten, Moores failed to take the easy stumping chance, the ball going between his legs for 4 byes. In Carter's next over a four through mid wicket by Pope brought up the 100 partnership between Borthwick and himself in 29 overs. With the floodlights now on, Blatherwick who replaced Carter was leg glanced for four by Pope bringing up his 50 in 77 balls. The Surrey 200 came up in the 52nd over as Blatherwick ( 5 0 42 0) who conceded 23 in two overs made way for the returning Carter. Patterson-White got a belated introduction from the Pavilion End for the 57th over. Pope was dropped on 69, an easy chance to Slater at short mid wicket in Patterson-White's second over. The 150 partnership came up in 43 overs. Bad light stopped play at 1504 with Surrey 222 for two after 61 overs with Borthwick on 91 and Pope on 72. Tea was taken.
Play resumed at 1528 with Carter and Coughlin in tandem. Borthwick got to his ton off 214 balls with a boundary to fine leg off Carter. Bad light stopped play at 1600 with Surrey 246 for two off 70 overs with Borthwick on 109 (243 balls, 13x4) and Pope 78 (126 balls,9x4). The rain started five minutes later and play was called off for the day at 1640. With Mr Saggers in attendance, a poor forecast for tomorrow and showers predicted for the last two days, play is likely to be severely restricted for the rest of the match. MAG
The end of the season can't come quick enough.
Any lingering hopes from the spring have long since been dashed.
No revival, no fight and no win.
The minor compensation for the six months of misery (Finals day glory) never materialised and in reality the nature of the semi-final defeat just adds to sadness and bewilderment as to why the institutional ineptitude has been allowed to continue unchecked for quite so many months.

We must can't take any more !
ReplyDeleteTry to rekindle the spirit of the game against Warwickshire but take more wickets!!
ReplyDeleteAgree. The 3 debutants need to play again vs Surrey. I would imagine Moores back in and possibly LPW and Fletch.
DeleteAssuming it is down to me to select the team I would go for:
Mull, Nash. Clarke, Compton, Slater, LPW, Moores, Ashwin, Evison, Fletch, Blatherwick,
If Ashwin not available I would add Cogs.
No point in playing Chappell who was clearly under par vs Warwick.
if no LPS then I would play Ball
Duckett - who I don't think was at fault vs Worcs (he stayed in, and missed the ball - it happens) should have a rest. He will be shot mentally
Poor weather may help to save us from any further embarrassment!
ReplyDeleteAs Richard Tennant and SOME of the committee would have us believe everything in the garden is rosy. Baz and the Pub Landlord are off to play franchise cricket, the captain still thinks he's the right man for the job in red ball, PM appears to have been rewarded for a total disaster of a season(concurrent in red ball)by being offered a new contract extension if he wants it now some of his preferred options have fallen through and he's now wearing a similar Teflon jacket to our dear DoC who appears to accept no responsibility for the route they decided to go down. We've got the new 100 for us all to look forward to and games on picturesque(sometimes remote, freezing cold and windy however) outgrounds to visit, keep losing our best young prospects we've invested time in through out Academy&Second Elevens.......and we can sample the finest cuisine on Gods Green Earth by coughing up a paltry £175 a head when our very own Michelin starred chef graces us with his presence several times a year. We should all be happy and content with things down there. They don't like nasty, horrid criticism only slaps on the back and a 'jolly well done old bean' attitude when things go so appallingly wrong. Of course they can't lose as then rightly so they get the plaudits when things go well. Finally when oh when is the REAL Ben Duckett going to appear. The hugely talented Northants version easily wins that game for us not finishes unbeaten on 49 and then sinks to the ground in utter disbelief he couldn't get us home.
ReplyDeletePlease God. Make it rain.
ReplyDeleteI don't thick Duckett lost it so much as our Bowlers and the tactics of not sending in Clarke higher up the Order - rather than not at all. Perhaps the Michelin Chef overfed the Team the night before!!!
ReplyDeleteTurning thoughts to 2020: When we are in an 8 team div 2......by definition the weakest probably ever since the league split, given that it comprises the teams which couldn't get promoted when it was 3 who go up.....(and ourselves, of course)
ReplyDeleteWe have all often criticised the lack of success criteria which seem to apply to some/all of the players and coaches - so here goes
So 14 matches - lets say 25 innings (maybe a few less):
Mull: Still captain. There is nobody else and I suspect he still has the team respect. He needs to be close to 700 runs and 40 wickets. Opening I think the best for him
Slater, Duckett, Clarke: I bracket them together as they need to deliver - the latter in white ball also. We need 850+ from this group
Nash: I am less convinced by him. Again I think it is his last contract year. He should be close in on the above 3, otherwise why be there? I think the same for Libby too: He is clearly more comfortable in Div 2, but needs to make himself undroppable
Cogs and Zak: Need to be playing in 10 games each as a min and be on 35 wickets and 500 runs, I am sure it is Cogs last season - and career defining if he does not produce. Both need to be in white ball too. Both need to replace Wood and more - in red and white ball
LPW: Needs to be the new Samit: Which is quite an "ask" - playing at number 6/7 in all forms
Fletch: Needs support - only provided to him by Wood this year
Ball: 50 wickets. Simple. He cant go from "former England bowler" to not in the team. What is needed to get him back? New bowling coaches? He can be an asset if treated properly
Moores: Samit: Decide what they want. End of the road for red ball for Notts? The former needs some competition for his place. The latter - white ball only I think.
Blatherwick/James/Evison/Gibson: Become real squad members: provide real choice as sadly lacking this year
So what do we need?
For me, we need an opening bowler or very good first change. Easy to say, I accept - but we will be lightweight without one. This year despite Pattinson and Broad, we still struggled.
As for an overseas, you never know who is available and for how long. Full season of Ashwin (aint going to happen) would demonstrate the contribution of an experienced and effective player with bat and ball. I think there is as strong a case for an all rounder as for a batsman as for a bowler as for a wicket keeper in truth. Someone who could play in 12 of the 14 games would help
….mind you, I started this season with optimism!!!
I don't care anymore. It's all a bit shit. Nothing will change whilst Lisa is in charge, Mick will still have a job, the old boys network will still be in place.
ReplyDeleteCannot blame you, I wonder how many members will not rejoin. Take no pleasure in asking yhat, but ccannot blame them either. Club needs new management to survive in the long run
DeleteThe few Notts members that I know, have stated that they aren't renewing. My three memberships are always renewed early so I can get England tickets, but not this time round. I might renew but not until April next year.
DeleteI haven't heard a single Notts member say that they have any interest in attending a single 100 match.
Beer and Pies, well said. There are 4 people who are not to blame in any way for our terrible season. They are the 3 lads who made their First Class debuts last week and LPW . If MN or any other person employed by the club is trying to blame them, I think that is disgusting and cowardly.
ReplyDeleteNo Libby in the squad again
ReplyDeleteIs he about to collect his P45?
He was in the Raglan stand on Saturday night exercising his right elbow
DeleteWe look a bit light on seam bowling based on the team selection.
ReplyDeleteThis is the one time of the year when county cricket takes some headlines with Essex and Somerset. I hope they get a game not ruined by weather.
I notice white ball specialist Plunkett in the Surrey team. Clearly they persuaded him to have a different contract to that which we negotiated with HG and AH.
Mmm. V light on bowling it would seem. At least Cogs got some wickets....well a couple.
ReplyDeleteThere was a stat relatively recently that Moores has conceded 50% of the runs he has scored (OK, not many) in byes. That feels remarkable and unsustainable.....
And it seems highly likely that the Season will end without a Win. So it will be at least almost 2 years before we again win a Match - utterly unacceptable.
ReplyDeleteSeems to me Notts need at least a couple of bowlers for next season, And that's not counting a probable overseas addition to the attack ( cartel looks a very hollow word to use after this season)
ReplyDeleteBatting wise we might cope , Surely some of our highly paid batters cannot have a repeat of this season...
If we also add some fresh faces to the coaching staff then we may have a better season, Let's face it . It could hardly been worse than this awful season we have all endured....
I'm trying to end on a positive note , But tbh I'm struggling, So that being the case let me finish by thanking MAGS for his excellent reports all throughout the season. You must have an iron constitution to sit through the rubbish Notts have served up this season....
Completely agree with all of that.
DeleteEspecially the last paragraph. Great to read such detail about our apparent summer sport! Tremendous job!
And to add my thanks as well, a great site which is always an entertaining read...well done MAG
DeleteGiven the rain today and the comment from the brief report, Mark Church is a v good local radio commentator. I deliberately chose his coverage of the t20 QF (for Middlesex) rather than radio Nottm when it was not on 5live extra.
ReplyDeleteYes -echo the sentiments already expressed !
ReplyDeleteWell done to MAGS and the team for such superb reporting together with photographs and humourous asides . Its all helped us Notts fans to keep sane during a traumatic season .
I know a lot of work and travel ( plus mega expenses) is involved in the cricket reports but I do hope they carry on into next season /
Any chance of confirmation MAGS ?
Just looking down the up to date first class averages and its amazing to see the top Notts team member in the batting department is ASHWIN - who in no time has scored 339 runs at an average of 37 . A really good effort which puts are "proper " batters to shame .
ReplyDeleteIts a reflection on the total batting points for Notts this season . others who should have done better are
Slater - 442 runs - average 19
Libby 189 runs - average 18
Patel 258 runs - average 17
Moores 323 runs- average a miserly 14
Broad 109 runs - average 12
Those stats are really not good enough taking many various things into account .
Bowling wise ,things are a little better with LPW and Ashwin and Fletch doing reasonably well with 20/34/35/ wickets at an average of 20/24and 26 .
Poor old Jake Ball has just lost the plot for some reason and has only taken 14 wickets at an average of 61 .
Well looking at all the various tables of averages its clear that things can only get better !
So we have to look forward to next season and wish the team success in all Competitions .
We are Notts fans on here at the end of the day and full membership at Trent Bridge is still a relative bargain .
This was a season to forget with very few highlights for the Notts fans
When will the retained list be published ? Its quite obvious we need an injection of fresh blood and ideas !! ??
These stats rather give lie to the notion that our balance of experience and youth was too heavily reliant on the latter.
DeleteMany of the players named and with poor averages could be classed as experienced!
Being as the coach and DoC seem unable to work out what went wrong this season, a new tactic should be for us to play all our games in the winter months and enlist the services of a certain player called P.R.E Cipitation and this way we will be able to at least draw some games as opposed to succumbing to disaster thrashings every time.
ReplyDeleteMr Cipitation is doing extremely well this morning!!!
ReplyDeleteYes Sir Philip, my money's on him having a better red ball season than Slater, Libby and Moores all put together. He's far more reliable and consistent and the battle would be on to see who is the real shower amongst them all perhaps?
DeleteAND, he's a true all-rounder!!!
ReplyDeleteLast chance of the season for Dave don't rock the boat Girdle to redeem himself and tell the truth of the Notts fan displeasure regarding the state of the club rather than protecting his own position acting the buffoon. We are not interested in the singular or the plural of a duck or whether you are partial to a bit of battenburg. Just tell your listeners that virtually every Notts fan wants Newell out and a culling of the coaching staff to take responsibility for this barely believable shambles of a season. I won't be holding my breath.
ReplyDeleteHe knows what side his bread is buttered. Never bite the hand that feeds.
DeleteIs Bracegirdle employed by Notts CCC or the BBC?
DeleteHe's freelance (?) so has to keep "in" with those that are likely to offer him gigs
DeleteNo chance silence is golden as usual
DeleteThe sheer folly of playing in late September has been demonstrated by most Matches being ended early due to rain. I believe that the ECB will be happy with this as they clearly want to see the end of the 4-day Game otherwise the Matches would have been scheduled mainly between May - early September. The short form of the Game will continue to push the County Championship further into oblivion until it becomes hardly recognisable any more.
ReplyDeleteSEASON OVER - do any of the Players deserve anything at the forthcoming Rewards Evening? I would say ONLY Ashwin and Luke Fletcher - the rest deserve to see a clear message given to them that they haven't performed anywhere near well enough. Out Committee needs to hang its head in collective shame and embarrassment. We now await any announcements as to what changes there may be for 2020.
ReplyDeleteTbey achieved nothing and deserve nothing. Is there, as has already been asked, some deep wound in the club that has led to all this ? The players and staff whenever we see them look like they are constipated and the car keys have just sliiped into the drains. It is a weird atmosphere down there now
ReplyDeleteWell a very dismal end to a very dismal season - in no uncertain terms
ReplyDeleteJust a few random thoughts that spring to mind -and in no particular order .
The climax of the once mighty County Championship being decided a week before Goose Fair when bad light and damp conditions are nearly always the order of the day .
How must Somerset being feeling now ? After 144 years they had a reasonable chance of being Champions for the very first time . Their chance snatched away by ludicrous and unfair match scheduling.
Going back over the Notts CCC results for the whole season -where are the highlights ? You can count the positives on the finger of one hand .Heads MUST roll ! But whose and when ?
Will those that should now resign go voluntary or be sacked ?
Is anyone at the Club brave enough to do whats necessary in order that fresh blood and new ideas are brought in ?
The Membership numbers are bound to decline next year . I do not know of a single Notts Member who is happy with whats going on at the Club these days .
The end of year awards dinner will be a hard event to stomach . Who could possibly be Player of the Year apart from Fletch ( again) or Ashwin ?
But no doubt there will be the usual self congratulation and mutual back slapping and thus overlooking what has ACTUALLY taken place this season .
I notice that at long last the Evening Post cricket reporter is actually now doing his job and pointing out all the shortcomings that the Club continually gloss over . There have been several letters recently in the Post asking why the necessary clear out of dead wood has not yet begun .
There are a lot of angry Notts members out there . The Club ignore their views at their peril .
After being a fully paid up member for OVER 50 years I can say that the general atmosphere at Trent Bridge is the worst I have ever known it .
Things are wrong somewhere and everybody knows it .
I for one am pleased this season is over . Humiliations and thrashings have been the order of the day for so long now it would appear the first eleven have actually forgotten how to win a 4 day game .
There must be some positives to come out of the past few months !? I will leave others to point them out .
Cricket as us old uns knew it is changing at bewildering speed . But is it for the better ? .
I fear the 100 Ball competition will die a slow lingering death . I dont know a single cricket fan who is in favour of it or intends to pay and watch the games. Thats a bad start 1
We shall see .
Championship player of the season.... Joe Clarke for 3 centuries, just you wait and see.
ReplyDeleteThe championship is played over 14 games, not just this one, so if Essex have finished top the Wurzells can't complain. The weather generally evens itself out over the season and on almost every occasion the best and most deserved team wins it full stop. Whose gonna resign when under contract, no one I would suggest personally and I can't see Ms.Pursestrings paying many, if any, people off mid term. As it looks like we're stuck with the DoC until HE decides it's time for his retirement, stuck with the players on lucrative deals and PM would appear to be opting to sign a new extension, suspect nowt will change down there. Mull to relinquish the armband ? Can't see it, he knows he would be under pressure for his place in the red ball side. Div 2, however, quite frankly is awful so I suggest we've got a very realistic chance of mounting a promotion campaign. I think some of our batters will destroy attacks going down a significant level. Overseas player will be interesting, presumably a bowler is a must. Jake Ball just cannot be as poor again in Div2 and I think Coughlin will have an outstanding season, provided he can somehow stay fit. Players of the year can only be BIG Fletch and Ashwin surely and the inept, pathetic and embarrassing displays by a lot of the others are the exact reason where we miserably sit at the foot of the table.Worryingly and like Sir Philip always points out SOME of the committee seem to think this performance is acceptable which in itself tells another story...........
ReplyDeleteWe've actually finished with the least batting and bowling points in both divisions
ReplyDeleteLowest points tally ever by anyone
DeleteAnd to think we used to laugh at Leicestershire going a whole season without winning a game. Well we’re not laughing anymore are we!
DeleteFurther to '75 Not Out' Averages above - the County Championship ones are:
ReplyDeleteSlater - 471 runs - average 20.48
Libby 189 runs - average 18.9
Patel 258 runs - average 17.2
Moores 323 runs- average a miserly 13.4
Ashwin played 5 Matches and averaged 37.67; Joe Clarke 12 Matches Average 31.05; Nash 12 Matches Average 30.52; Mullaney 13 Matches Average 28.92; Duckett 13 Matches Average 27.39.
Bowling: Liam Patterson-Wghite 5 Matches 20 Wickets Average 21; Ashwin 5 Matches 34 Wickets Average 24.59 and Luke Fletcher 12 Matches 35 Wickets Average 26.46.
So Patterson-White, Ashwin and Fletcher 89 wickets between them was not a bad haul with Liam Patterson-White a promising prospect.
Overall the rest of the Players in both Batting and Bowling performed too poorly for further mention.
Just posted on the 'official' Trent Bridge Web Site:
ReplyDelete'8th in Division 1'
Well, that's an achievement to boast about isn't it!!!???
I think they're "taking the p..s with that post Sir Philip to get reaction.
DeleteThe Trent Bridge season in numbers.
DeleteFor me, there weren't any really redeeming features of this season. I mentioned early on after the first psycho attack loss to Somerset that serious psychological help was needed to avoid the lemmings over the cliff mentality that the team had got into.
ReplyDeleteEither nothing was done in this regard, or there is nothing for the sports psychologists to work on.
On the odd occasion where they did get into a reasonable position, the team somehow contrived to cock it up. The stand-out exception being the trouncing of Middlesex in the T20 QF.
Nightmare summer of 2019 will only be redeemed by stellar 2020 season. And they could do it!!
Remember 2005, 2010? So, promotion from Division 2 and a one day trophy please in 2020 and the growth once more into a team the Nottinghamshire supporters can be truly proud of.
bws and many thanks for hosting this forum,
Chris S
