OUTLAWS FAIL TO CLOSE OUT A "CERTAIN VICTORY"
Players clueless or chasing individual glory?
Peter Moores told the members earlier this week “He could feel the pain” as defeat followed defeat is this truly annus horribilis. Well two more tragedies have unfolded since. Firstly we had a defeat following a first innings score of 498 and then this once where Notts failed to complete a victory needing 49 off 7 overs with nine wickets left making a total dog's breakfast of what should have been a routine run chase.
The pain is two-fold, firstly that which is afflicted to the Notts faithful and secondly the pain in the ribs to all the opposition fans that cannot stop laughing at us as one calamity after another has occurred.
"Match winner!"
"Match winner!"
At a sun drenched Edgbaston, everything unravelled once Hales was out for what should have been a match winning 52 (49 balls, 4x4, 2x6). Notts suddenly failed to find the ropes and were suddenly dealing with singles, scoring 23 off 4 overs. Christian hit Parnell for a leg side six in the 18th over bowled by Parnell in an over which cost 15.
Clueless
Notts needed 11 off 2, but realistically it was 10 off 2 as they had lost fewer wickets (the tie breaker). Then panic set in as both Christian and Moores holed out to Brown, there followed a ridiculous run out of Mullaney. Seven now needed off the last over bowled by Parnell with two Test batsman at the crease but Patel and Duckett could only manage five as...
Notts snatched defeat from the jaws of victory.
Tie-breaker
Patel wanted two off the penultimate ball as he hit the ball to left of the boundary fielder at backward point as he knew that tied scores were sufficient to gain victory. Unfortunately Duckett appeared not to know the rule and elected to keep strike. The last ball was a Yorker and with the keeper standing up no bye could be attempted. Notts batting had flopped for umpteenth time in 2019. Worcester had bowled superbly on a sub standard pitch; no extra had been given away compared to 11 by Notts including 4 separate wides by Gurney. Moeen Ali won the man of the match award following a rapid 21 with three sixes with 4 0 13 1 with the ball. Worcester had been restricted to 147 for 9 with Whiteley on 36 and Wessels on 34. Carter was the leading bowler with three for 32. It was shame with the pitch taking so much spin that Imad Wasim was unavailable.
Notts won the toss and elected to field. Without Imad unavailable, Mullaney made his seasonal T20 debut. Clarke after his twin tons In the week came in for Libby. Clarke somewhat unbelievably did not even get to crease as the final act unfolded.

Carter v Moeen
Nine came off the first over bowled by Wood (City End). Rutherford fell to a catch a cover by Hales off Carter ,for 5, 10 for one. Moeen launched Carter for a straight six and with another six over long on, 13 off the over. Wood conceded 10 off the third over. Gurney came on as Moeen hit his third six, once again over long on, eight off the over. Carter switched ends and Moeen (21) lost his off stump attempting a sweep, 40 for two. Wood conceded nine in the last over off the power play, 54 for two.
Patel conceded two plus a leg bye in over seven. Mullaney went for five singles in the next over. Over nine bowled by Patel went for seven. Parnell (15) hit Mullaney for six but he departed in the same over giving a swirling chance to Christian at mid off, 76 for three after 10 overs.
Ben Cox lasted two balls being caught behind by Moores off Christian for one, 78 for four, Christian conceding four. Patel went for nine in the twelfth over. Wessels was bowled leg stump by Mullaney for 34 (38 balls – 3x4), 89 for five; Mullaney going for three singles. Carter returned and D'Oliviera charged him but missed and was bowled for seven, 91 for six, three off the over.

Direct hit!
Ed Barnard was run out by a direct hit by Clarke in the covers, Harry Gurney the bowler, 97 for seven. The 100 came up in the 16th over bowled by Carter, the off spinner being hit for a straight six by Whiteley, Carter 3 for 32 off his four overs. Whiteley hit Mullaney (4 0 32 2) for six over mid wicket, then a four through the covers and followed it with a straight six, 17 off the over. Next over bowled by Gurney went for seven. Wood went for five off the 19th over. Whiteley was caught on the cover ropes by Wood off Gurney for a 24 ball 36, 140 for eight. Mitchell (13) hit Gurney overturned mid wicket for 6 but fell next ball to a swirling a catch to Christian at extra cover . Worcester 147 for nine after 20 overs.
Notts had bowled and fielded well.
In the reply, three came off Moeen's first over. Nash hit Parnell for a straight four. He followed it up with a mid wicket boundary and then a four through extra cover. The last ball went for six over mid wicket, 18 off the over. Hales hit Morris for a straight six., 29 for 0 after 3 overs. Over four bowled by Pat Brown from the City End went for four. Hales hit Morris for two off side fours, 11 off the over. Hales hit Brown for an extra cover boundary. Nash was caught low down at square leg by Mitchell off Barnard for 24. Notts 52 for one after six overs.

Notts well set
Moeen went for three singles off the seventh over. Next over Mitchell went for five singles. Duckett switched hit Barnard for four. Hales stroked Barnard for a straight six, 15 off the over. Duckett swept D'Oliviera for four. Notts 83 for one after 10 overs.

Hales 50
Brown went for three singles and then the same for Moeen, 89 for one off 12 overs. Hales cover drove Brown for four. Two came off the next ball. Hales 50 off 39 balls. Everything was going so well…. ten off the over.
Let the drama commence. Hales was caught behind by Cox off Moeen for 52 off 42 balls, 100 for two. Moeen 4 0 13 1, all 13 singles. Wayne Parnell conceded four singles 107 for two off 15 overs. Mitchell conceded just six off over 16 including a swept four for Duckett. Barnard was then swept for four by the left hander, nine off the over., 122 for two off 17 overs.

The match was now more even but Notts were in the box seats.
Parnell was greeted with a leg side six by Christian. A single, then a scooped four from Duckett, 15 off the over. Twelve balls remained, Outlaws effectively needing just 10 more runs.

Clueless or looking for individual glory?
Christian went for a lofted drive off Pat Brown but that man Moeen held an excellent catch above his head at mid off, 137 for three. Moores surprisingly sent in ahead of the in-form Clarke was caught at long on by Wessels off Brown for one, 139 for four. Moores had made two ducks on Finals Day in 2017, Mullaney was run out without facing a ball going for impossible two, 140 for five. Patel got a single off the last ball of the over.
"Duckett throws game"
Notts needed seven off the 20th over bowled by Parnell who gone for 37 runs in 3 overs. He started with a dot ball, then a single for Patel. Duckett then got a two and a single. Fletcher came running onto to the pitch presumably to explain the tie break rules. Then Patel should have attempted a two hitting the ball wide of the fielder on the backward ropes, but Duckett quite staggeringly sent him back. With the keeper standing up Notts needed two to win and one for a super over. Duckett failed to get a run, cue mass celebrations from disbelieving Worcester team and supporters. Duckett 49 not out off 42 balls (5x4) had failed to close out the match.

The result put the tin lid on the worst season in living memory. Just one more match to go at The Oval on Monday.
Good-bye and good luck to Luke Wood
This match probably saw the last appearance in a Notts shirt for Luke Wood, who has put his heart and soul into the club for the last six season. Always a fan’s favourite who could relate to his 100% effort he put in every time he set foot onto the pitch. The move to Lancashire seems a good one. First Division cricket with a team with proper ambition and a very good coaching structure in place. Who would bet against him not following Hutton and Milnes in taking 50 championship wickets in a season. Good luck to him. These three players should have never been allowed to leave the club. They are Notts lads through and through and would have created a very close knit dressing akin to Worcester, Essex, and Somerset. After all, it’s team spirit and togetherness that wins cricket matches! MAG

ReplyDeleteWhy Moores at 5 ahead of Mull, Clarke and Samit?
Why Clarke at 8?
Career ending for a few of them in t20 I’m afraid.
It should be career ending for a few at the club full stop after some of the disaster performances this seasons, but we all know little will change. Pitty the members forum is not after today as they would have copped a lot more flak after this pinnacle.Coach Peter was saying it's been a success in white ball whatever happens today. After that absolute shocker I'm not so sure. So is it still the young and inexperienced players that are to blame(incidentally a policy the DoC and the coach planned themselves but both appear to be completely unaccountable for their poor decisions) or do we now cling to different excuses to deflect any criticism away from them. If anyone from the club wants to post anonymously please could they tell me who actually made that ridiculous decision to send our white ball master exponent in ahead of Mull, Samit and not even bat Joe Clarke upon being recalled to the side and true to form, he did what he does best most of the time.
DeleteMoores before Mull, Samit and especially Clarke pure nepotism and nobody with any guts in the management team to call it!
DeleteThis season needs to be over. What a mess.
ReplyDeleteThis comment has been removed by the author.
ReplyDeleteNow this was not just snatching defeat from the jaws of victory so much as scientifcally and calculatingly engineering an absolutely unforeseen negative outcome from all the building blocks of success - and Mr Moores in his Radio Nottingham interview could offer no explanations.
ReplyDeleteI have one - we quite simply have a Side which doesn't know how to win - when success seems within their grasp they panic and run the other way! Failure is their Comfort Zone.
So, where do we go from here? New faces needed on the Committee and time for the 'old guard' to hang up their tunics and retire.
And where was Joe Clarke in the Batting line up? Was he injured? We must have an explanation why Samit Patel and Tom Moores came in ahead of him.
ReplyDeleteI'm sorry but how can Peter Moores say that we did nearly everything right and it was a good campaign? Whatever Planet he is on is way outside the known Galaxy!!! This has been an utterly dreadful Season and we have been extremely poor. Mr Newell is ultimately responsible - he needs to go and to go NOW. Peter Moores and Andy Pick also need to go - and I say that with a heavy heart because I have a high regard for Peter Moores - but maybe he is just too nice a chap and lacks the harder side of a character which seems needed at Notts. Where is personal and professional pride amongst the hierarchy in Nottinghamshire Cricket Club? Also how on earth can the Chairman and certain other Committee Members justify remaining - Darren Bicknell also needs to go. We have to vote in new Committee members for 2020 otherwise nothing will change or improve.
ReplyDeleteCarry on Screaming used to be my favourite comedy. I've seen a new one today Carry On Notts Batting Collapse and it stars most of the red/white ball squad. They've auditioned it so many times this season they've now perfected the live performance so masterly when it matters most. There's a completely new role in today's film, it the role of Nepotism and it's being played by Peter Moores with alarming success.
ReplyDeleteAngry and totally and utterly bemused by several decisions today in the semi-final against Worcester. Why no Clarke, when the man has at last re-discovered his form? Why run singles when two runs were required? Why resort to stupid shots when one down the ground would have sufficed. Why bowl wides and give away runs. We lost by a bloody run boys. Unbelievable.
ReplyDeleteSo so disappointed with that. Cruising it and then fell to pieces spectacularly. And we could all see it coming, especially with the bizarre decisions made today.
ReplyDeleteWe did the hard work in restricting Worcester, then let them back into the game, and the Whiteley onslaught at the end proved so costly. And again, lack of discipline bowling those extras came back to haunt us.
Hales and Nash gave us hope but then the ridiculous tinkering. Clarke made two centuries this week, but let's not bat him at three. Duckett went so well, but the run out was just club cricket stuff. Moores made a pair last time out at Finals day, so why bring him in so early? Love Samit for his commitment but he's always a slow starter and, at that stage, it was a luxury we couldn't afford.
We fell short when we should have walked it. A horrible feeling, and I'm glad the season is nearly over, because I really can't take anymore!
Just checked. We gave Worcestershire 11 extras, they gave us 0.
ReplyDeleteAnd we lost by 1 run. I hope they think about that tonight.
That's The Cartel you're dissing 🤣
DeleteThe team has gone straight down to London in preparation for the final game of the season. Surrey v Notts starting on Monday. I won't be there. I have too many other things to do and I need my sanity.
ReplyDeleteJake Libby not going then?
DeleteSimply - why no Joe Clarke batting for us? A fundamentally serious error.
ReplyDeletePay Stephen Fleming whatever it takes to come in as Head Coach. Notts need his competitive instinct and guile. The current incumbents are too nice and accept defeat all too readily.
ReplyDeleteIt was the final nail in the coffin of what has been an horrendous season and braceg was silent has usual
ReplyDeleteExcellent report 'MAG' - clear; concise and analytical - something we sadly never get from Peter 'it's really been a good Season' Moores; Dave 'Oh! Isn't everything lovely - Notts really like me' Bracegirdle or Mick the Director of Cricket 'I can't understand why THEY aren't all doing a lot better' Newell.
ReplyDeleteThis Season has been a collective failure by the Committee; the Executive; the Coaches and the Players - and all we seem to get back in response are platitudes and complaceny and "We'll give you more of the same next Season" - well, we don't want more of the same - What do we want? CHANGE; when do we want it? NOW.
Why Clarke didn't come in at 4 is still baffling to me
ReplyDeleteI think yesterday's result typifies Notts season.
ReplyDeleteWe have a DOC, who puts self preservation, above the interest of the club, we have a head coach who now looks past his sell by date , and a bowling coach who resembles an ageing night club bouncer.
There is obviously a breakdown of trust between players and management.
When Robin Chipperfield asked Newell who was at fault for the debacle of a season , he blamed the players. Yes the players that he signed.
This outlines how low he has stooped, and illustrates how desperate he is to hang on to power.
Talented players like Hutton, Milnes and Wood had the intelligence to see that the empire was crumbling around them ,and had the good sense to leave while they could.
By in large, we are now left with a bunch of undisciplined average joe's.
If you are Notts fan, without regime change, the immediate future looks bleak.
Are you going to stand for the Committee Mark?
ReplyDeleteMAG - thank you for putting so much effort into these match reports !
ReplyDeletePlus the ironic comments that accompany them . A little bit of humour certainly helps after what we loyal Notts fans have witnessed this season .
A footnote to Dave Bracegrundle . The best pal the players ever had even when they are not performing . Dave please widen your vocabulary to include adjectives like " pathetic" " awful" "unprofessional" " brainless". Words like these could be used from time to time to describe more accurately the recent performances of some Notts players who have let the side down in no uncertain terms . Please start to tell it as it is and not sugar coat the obvious shortcomings . Some players may not like it but it would be truer version of whats going on in the field of play .
Well said couldn't agree more
DeleteNo Philip, sitting in a committee room, with a bunch of corporate bureaucratic type of individuals is an anathema to me.
ReplyDeleteAs a friend and a fellow member said to me recently, I wouldn't last 5 minutes in a room with that lot.
BUT, Mark, what is the solution then to our problems? I totally appreciate and understand what you say and the proposed / enforced ECB Constitutional changes will probably only make things worse - cricket management has become like politics - those elected to represent only represent themselves!
ReplyDeleteWithout 2 No Balls and 7 Wides we would have won - Worcestershire bowled 0 Extras. So any comments from Mr Pick please?
ReplyDeleteI was at Taunton in 1984 when we failed to win the championship by a single boundary despite the brave efforts of the late Mike Bore. I was at Lord's in 1985 when the great Derek Randall failed by two runs to win us the NatWest Trophy from the final delivery. I was at Trent Bridge in 2006 when we were robbed of T20 Finals Day glory by a Leicestershire no-ball to Will Smith at the climax of he game. I was at the Rose Bowl a few years later when a dodgy Duckworth Lewis ruling cost Ready and Huss a very realistic chance of a T20 semi-final victory against Somerset. There have been many other red ball and white ball collapses and capitulations over the years, too many really to fully recall. The only glorious exception was Eddie Hemmings at Lord's in 1989. It seems to me that if Notts can find a way to bottle it, they will, and that lack of nous, spirit, cricketing intelligence, call it what you will, seems to be ingrained in the soul of our beloved club. Yesterday was possibly the worst of all, an unbelievable meltdown which I find painful and inexplicable 24 hours later. And, yes, I was there once again to witness another Notts calamity, when I could have saved myself £86 and watched the disaster unfold on TV. I love Notts CCC and Trent Bridge (not always in that order) and have done so since I first walked into the ground as an 11 year-old to see Brian Bolus and co take on Yorkshire in August 1967. This season has been the worst since those distant, and largely undistingushed days, and I have grown utterly sick of defeat after defeat. I like and respect Peter Moores and he made a lot of sense at last week's members forum. But he has to get us back into Division One next season and a quarter final T20 spot to justify his continued position. We have a talented squad, a magnificent ground, a loyal support, but all we get is suffering and heartache, and no championship win since June last year. That is simply not good enough, and the clock is ticking on this regime if things do not improve from day one next year. Perhaps when the bloated irrelevant cricketing circus that is the Hundred is shown up for what it really is - a cynical exercise in shameless greed by the powers that be at the expense of the county game so many love - Mr Fleming can dump the absurdity of the Trent Rockets and come back to lead Notts to a better future.
ReplyDeleteHear! Hear! Personal and professional greed rules - just Google Derek Brewer's home to see in what palatial splendour he lives - as do some others of our Administrators and Advisers - they are sucking the Counties dry of money.
DeletePowerful stuff Jon. I hope someone at the club reads it.
DeleteHear hear from me too for all comments on the season and the Hundred but there is a clear and crucial distinction, hinted at in your own description, between all those near misses and yesterday - which was, as you say, the pinnacle of an utterly embarrassing season. Those teams were, admittedly, strong talented sides to get that far in each case but more importantly they were proud, entertaining, characterful teams chock full of players who were professional in the best sense of the word and conveyed that professionalism so as to make supporters believe that they would sweat blood for the team and in many cases that they would bleed for Notts, their club and our club. Our response to those near misses was not just disappointment but pride that our team could play so well and get so close. We respected and were proud of the team. That connection, respect and pride has been earned by very many less strong and less successful Notts teams and less naturally talented Notts players over the years.
ReplyDeleteThat connection, respect and pride does, though, have to be earned and can be lost. The current set up, partly but not wholly through the risk inherent in drafting a lot of players from various other sides into the dressing room at the same time, has either not earned it or has lost what it had. The reaction to yesterday was not pride in the attempt but, as you say, pain, humiliation and even disgust. The fact that it was only a reversion to the mean of the championship form emphasised that feeling. The only positive is that the contention that there is something rotten going on which requires some radical surgery cannot now be countered by the argument that we won a trophy.
I may not renew. That possibility has not crossed my mind for a single millisecond in the past 45 odd years of membership.
