I'll let MAG's numbers do the talking but the decline over the last two seasons in first class cricket doesn't need a statistician (or an accountant) to be able to see it.

A fine player for us, fighting batsman, tight bowler and safe pair of hands in the field. Now a shadow of what he was
ReplyDeleteHe still has a lot to offer but needs looking after - just see how well Ryan Sidebottom did after he left us and went to Yorkshire who knew how to bring out the best in him for a number of Seasons afterwards.
ReplyDeleteDon't get me started on our criminally inept behaviour with regard to Ryan Sidebottom...
ReplyDeleteAs for Samit I have been rather disappointed with some of the hostile comments through the season, which deprecate a massive and loyal contribution from an excellent player, consistent over very many years, including crucial trophy-winning perfoprmances. Batsmen in particular lose it very quickly and it is not clear whether Samit has regrettably passed that point but he was player of the year (and the overall MVP in the country for performance taking into account all 3 compettitions)in 2017; 2018 was his benefit year which unfortunately often distracts from playing performance; and he is not the only player this year to have been affected by what seems to be something deeply rotten at the heart of the club.
Being "looked after" would have helped in the past. A dozen or so years ago his career averages were not far short of 50 batting and not much more than 30 bowling - truly exceptional and in line with his enormous talent. However, management then insisted that he be our front line first class spinner which pulled focus from and detracted from the excellence of his batting (the same management in a different role was more recently telling him and England that he could gain some more test caps as a spinner who batted 7 or 8) and of course management's, and, in fairness, his own, desire to play him in every single game in every format meant that he was in later years often utterly knackered in the later part of the season. More sympathetic handling over the years would have seen his figures, which are more than respectable even after the last two below par seasons, a lot better than they are I believe.
Past his Sell By Date
DeleteInept is what the Newell regime does best but Samit has gone stale at Notts, having no competition for his place, he's lapsed into what we have witnessed over the past couple of seasons. Now with a new kid on the block, he's got a year to shake-up or get out.
Maybe he wouldn't be so knackered at the end of the season if he wasn't such a poor physical specimen?
DeleteI agree with a lot of all the comment content above. The decline in the last 2 seasons is clear - numerous factors at play. Age, sterile, hardly any rest etc. And I remember the sudden conversion to number 1 spinner when he had been a back up before then.
ReplyDeleteHowever he must see others treading the white-ball-only boards and think to himself that he could do as good a job. And he would probably be right. ( think Gurney, Trego, Luke Wright). He wouldn’t be human if he didn’t think that doing that for the next 3-5 years holds mor appeal. He has done his hard yards with Notts.
But a swan song next year in red ball could help us get promoted and if PM is staying for another years he has to try to get him back on track.
PLEASE NOTE:
ReplyDeleteSamit is the Speaker at the Cricket Lovers Society Meeting Thursday(tomorrow) at 7-30pm - replacing Harry Gurney who is not in the country! It will be a Q & A format with Colin Slater.
All welcome.
I pulled my comment elsewhere on the general state of the club, because I felt it was too harsh on Samit. On a personal level he has always been very polite to me, and in one case he may not remember, very kind. He has been, and maybe still is, not just a good player for us, but a champion. His record overall is superb. The last 4 things we have won, he has played a huge part in. He was is at his best in the trenches when everyone else falls away. To quote Shakespeare and Enobarbus about Mark Anthony "I fight with thee ? Rather I find a ditch wherein to die"
ReplyDeleteI think that you were right and respectful to 'pull' your previous comment on Samit - at the Cricket Lovers meeting last Thursday he showed a real passion and commitment to Notts and sees himself remaining for hopefully the next 3-4 years. It is clear that the more 'senior' players such as Luke Fletcher and Samit have a lot to offer in the way of being positive role models - I am sure that Fletch would be the first to recognise the pressures, and sometimes, foolishness of youth but that being able to come through the least admirable episodes you can emerge much stronger and gain a lot of respect for doing so - something that I hope Joe Clarke can also learn from. So, thank you 'Rich' - you are a gent.
DeleteThank-You too
