Clearly picking just one player of the past 5 years was too difficult, now lets try the question: who is your favourite Nottinghamshire cricketer 2000-2020?

Clearly picking just one player of the past 5 years was too difficult, now lets try the question: who is your favourite Nottinghamshire cricketer 2000-2020?

1 David Hussey 2 Kevin Pietersen 3 Usman Afzaal
ReplyDeleteYou've got to pick 1 and you can't pick Judas. It's "favourite" not most naturally talented. :P
DeleteChris Read
ReplyDeleteDavid Hussey
ReplyDeleteChris Read carried the county on his back for years, and was still delivering the goods when he retired. Nice lad too.
ReplyDeleteOk then, David Hussey29. Regarding KP, I was merely distancing myself from the man and merely remembering all those brilliant innings he played for us(when a lot of the team were not delivering) but as you have pressed me then Huss but Chris Read very very very close to getting the nod over him.
ReplyDeleteYes the buzz of excitement at the thought of his return gave the whole club a lift before he had even set foot on this island again. A very special layer for Notts.
Deleteand player
DeleteChris Read. Martyn Moxon said Notts never beaten till Chris was out
ReplyDeleteLove Hussey and no doubt several others but there really is not the faintest shadow of a doubt about this surely. As someone said above Read carried the team on his back for years and while we cling desperately to the glories of 2017 we should remember that we don't beat Surrey without Chris' last ever one day innings (however magnificent Hales was) and we don't even get promoted without him scoring a hundred - yet again - from coming in at 80-5 in his last ever first class innings. Utter pride and dedication to the very last breath. A true Notts hero consistently over decades.
ReplyDeleteWell said and completely agree. How many times did Chris and to a slightly lesser extent Paul Franks save the batting when the top 6 had self destructed and keep us in games in the first innings. Read was almost impossible to replace but these vital batting positions at nos 7 and 8 in the order are crucial to any team. Wonder if Pete Trego will fill one of these once we eventually start playing cricket again
DeleteDavid Hussey - a real gentleman who was always willing to give young supporters his signature after Limited Overs matches when many other Notts players weren't. He seemed a lot more approachable and less temperamental than some. Chris Read seemed more 'reserved' and I always had doubts as to why he was reluctant to use some Bowlers when we were not doing well. Towards the end I felt Read's captaincy became rather poor although he provided some superb solo performances. As they say - there's no 'I' in 'Team.'
ReplyDeleteYou've certainly got a point in Ready's captaincy Sir PJ, but you could also argue the captains role off the pitch in handling the players is just as much as his tactics on the field. Whatever shortcomings we may feel he had on the field, he was clearly able to perform the other side extremely well. We only have to look at how hard Mull has found this side of his role since replacing Ready in the role, albeit he has some very temperamental pros to handle by what we hear on the grapevine
DeleteThe point of the post was the gather people's FAVOURITE. Not the best batsman, bowler, player in general. Readie was a an unsurpassable gloveman IMHO and at times a fabulous backs-to-the-wall-reguard -action lower middle order batsman. As a captain, we didn't win as many games as we should have and he tended to be a bit negative, again that's just my opinion.
DeleteYes, completely agree NV. That's why I mentioned Usman Afzaal as he was just a personal favourite of mine around the 2003/4 era with a stylish, elegant straight drive back past the bowler. But not for one minute would anyone sugggest he was one of the very best batsmen we've had at the club. I suppose its conceivable that Teflon coated Mick was the favourite player of someone from the previous era, it's all opinions at the end of the day
DeleteI’m not really entitled to a comment as a Lancashire man but as a consistent thorn in our side , and yet a likeable man, it has to be Chris Read.
ReplyDeleteMy favourite of all time of course is Sobers
Boot on the other foot Lanky Des, have awful memories of the brilliant Wasim Akram steaming in against us in the 90s which was a pretty average Notts side, by our standards. It was X-rated at times !!!!!!!
