Fantastic stuff - thanks MAG
ReplyDeleteAs a Trent Bridge regular a lot of those stats bring back wonderful memories.
I was at TB for the very first 20/20 match. Played with portable floodlighting and finished late on a pretty cold evening. I well recollect the bar and catering staff throwing ice creams into the crowd. I actually caught a choc ice . Just the very thing you need at about 10 pm in the open air on a very chilly evening!
Think you probably are reflecting on the first 40 or even 45 over match held at TB Cruetking played under those 4, inadequate, portable, moveable floodlights. This was several years before the first t20 match held in 2003 which certainly would not have been played under floodlights. The match you relate to was against Lancashire, who stuffed us and a young overweight Andrew Flintoff smashed us to all parts. He was a new kid on the block, making his way in the game well ahead of any England call ups.Paul Johnson was captain for Notts Outlaws and came out to bat to the music of Stealers Wheel "Stuck in the Middle With You"
DeleteThe weather was foul that night but many stuck it out to the bitterly cold end.
DeleteABACUS - upon reflection you could well be correct! At my age memories from ages ago can easily blend into each other.
ReplyDeleteWe no longer get chic ices thrown at us during the T20 games . Instead the offerind is a tee shirt lobbed into the various stands and the excitement compounded by NUTS THE SQUIRREL doing his routine.
NUTS has had a very quiet time this season- is he still in hibernation?
'Cruet' has got me reflecting on those early 20/20 games. They were often played early in the week at the now, ridiculous, start time of 530pm(perhaps even 5pm, possibly) meaning working people with no flexibility could not get down for the start.Hence crowds of 3,000 to 4,000 were the norm perhaps not even as high as that. Notts were a truly awful T20 side, par score being 120 to 140 and without the bowling attack to make that a competitive game. All teams thought spin would just go around the park in those early years and would not be a vital component of a t20 bowling attack. Remember seeing Aussie Ian Harvey playing for Yorkshire, I think, flay our attack for a hundred which seemed an impossibility in just 20 overs. Can recall a young, unknown, Samit Patel in 2004 helping to win a game for us when he was batting late in the order. Also Mark Ealham unleashing a torrent of 6s hit of his toes towards the Parr side possibly a year or two later. Have heard Kent Captain Rob Key, on Dish TV, saying the Kent lads in the dressing room just thought the competition was a complete joke and their overseas pro Andrew Symons saying he wasn't going to take the games seriously. Seems totally unbelievable now, however.
ReplyDeleteYes I share some of those memories over the years. Especially the Mark Ealham onslaught- a great cricketer- a sad day for Notts when he retired from the game.
ReplyDeleteThose T20 Friday night games not so long ago were fantastic entertainment. Most of the crowd wanted a Notts victory but it was the ENTERTAINMENT on the night that was always the winner. Thousands of pints of beer and lager sunk, fish n chips, burgers and hot dogs consumed en- masse. Everyone giving a good time plus a sing-song during play. A good time was had by young and old. A terrific revenue stream for Nots with regular T20 crowds of 12,000 +.
Will those exhilarating days/ evenings come back to TB in 2021.
Fingers crossed. We may well see much reduced crowd limits at TB of 5,000 to 6,000 = much reduced match day income
