Thanks again. What strikes me - and of course as always you need the context of when bowlers bowl (power play and/or death bowling) - is just how consistent our current attack is. The runs per over and wickets per match suggests teams score at 7-8 per over off us, and given the batting we have then that’s seldom sufficient. What’s also clear is a: how good a player in this format Samit is - his bowling alone says that. B: Ball Gurney and Fletcher have records which suggest longevity and consistency (which we know to be true) and c: although Sidebottom and Swann were big losses when they left/moved on, we have replaced them well.
ReplyDeleteOne slight downer would be to check where the next generation to replace those named is coming from. But the stats for bowling and batting really suggest a squad which has conaistent contributions from many parts and that’s what gives us the record which we have in this form of the game.
Yes JimG, if you're being a bit critical you could certainly argue about the overall age of the team. The foxes were the youngest and we were the oldest. It just shows that t20 as well as youth and athleticism is also a game of extreme skill, proven by our brilliant wins last weekend and also 2017
DeleteCritically Notts aren't giving youngsters the opportunities to gain experience, to hone skills in order to replace the likes of Fletcher, Gurney and Ball when the time arises, leaving recruiting another player from another county as the only option available. AGAIN!
DeleteI personally cling to the hope that a fit Joey Evison would have been fitted into this winning Outlaws side, perhaps at the expense of a near redundant Steven Mullaney, even this year had it not been for an untimely injury.
Mullaney was the standout bowler in more than one match, took vital wickets when needed as he always does in the one day stuff and was the most economical bowler over the season so his redundancy is rather controversial in these quarters - the comment comes from his virtual non-use on finals day I imagine. He has been underbowled a little this year mainly I think because of Christian's admirable desire to be seen to be taking responsibility as captain and there is no doubt that Christian's captaincy and command of the team is a major contributor to our success even though he saved his batting in particular for his magnificent performance on finals day. Mullaney though is a key player in the one day stuff.
DeleteHow will any Notts youngster get a chance if none of the established players sit out games? The current system of Outlaws team selection has failed so many players in the past. The token mobile in field player which was adopted a few years back and was deemed redundant when big named players on the right side of 26 were signed, didn't help those players either - Root, S Wood, Elstone etc. If we are to produce Notts homegrown players, where are they going to get their opportunities to learn? If Mullaney isn't the right choice of sacrificial lamb, then perhaps the floating pensioner role, played by Nash and Trego over the competition in 2020 should be used. The inability / unwillingness to bring younger players through into the first XI is frankly embarrassing. The win at all cost mentality that has patently failed badly in first class cricket - time for a rethink by those at the top surely?
DeleteA vast amount to debate here, much of it very interesting and digging right to fundamental philosophies at the heart of the/a club and we could go on for a very long time. However just a couple of many thoughts: (a) the short answer if it is thought right to make a space is not to be the only 2020 team in the country with two overseas players; and (b) in the 2020 almost any mooted change would weaken a strong team, which hoped to win the thing and did - whereas in the first class the only risk was that we would strengthen a weak team so that is primarily where the selection should indeed have been much more imaginative/forward-looking/considerate to the young players, especially once we lost the first couple showing us to be both not very good and not going to win the thing.
DeleteWOW !!!!, some 'blasts from the past' among that lot. Richard Logan(KPs best friend when he was with us and that M.O.M five-for against Lanky I think wearing those awful gold shirts when we couldn't attract a sponsor that year, Kevin O'Brien, Rob Ferley, Dirk Nannes........but I do not recall Simon Francis whatsoever playing for the Outlaws. Another boring stat from me and probably one that everyone knows already is the amazing performance by Samit Patel in playing in every season of t20 from inception in 2003 to winning it last Sunday. Unbelievable longevity and consistency.
ReplyDeleteSamit has been a tremendous servant for Notts.
ReplyDeleteAnd still is of course
Who would you rather come in at No 8 if Notts needed 27 runs off the last 3 overs
Samits actual fitness has akways been qustioned but which player in the past ten years or more has played more games of domestic cricket.?
He keeps himself fit - in his own way
