Samit is one of the finest players in our history
ReplyDeleteThese stats strongly support the view that he is a superb batsman and a useful support bowler
Playing in 4 day cricket with Samit as main spinner is always going to make it difficult to force a victory in the latter part of a match, when your key spinner is so often needed to deliver wickets
A career bowling average for us of 37.59 shows he is not the man for that job
His highest for a season being 37 in 2011
Yes, spot on with that Rich. A brilliant servant for the club, consistently good in all 3 formats considering his career longevity and the issues of keeping in form for players who have played so many games for a club. Due to TB not producing turning pitches(well at least until we signed Ravi Ashwin and had no other choice) we were only ever going to go in to the majority of games with him as the front line spinner who would do a decent job for us, also playing as a top 6 batter. For many years we were able to win games, especially at home with our seam attack. The days of this tactic as we all know are long gone. You would think his main strength for us now is in the white ball format. Had a decent International career and apparently it was between him and Moeen Ali several years ago as to who would get the nod for the Test side. Generally, would always hold his nerve and produce some magic in the big pressure situations and when the SKY tv cameras have tuned up, which in itself is another sign of his sporting characteristics
ReplyDeleteYes agree with all that but look at his career averages at the end of 2008 - batting 48.7 bowling 34.4 - it seems that it was 2009, Swann playing very rarely indeed by then, when we/management decided he was to be our front line first class spinner rather than a top batsman chipping in with the ball. Imagine if he had been able to continue concentrating even more on his batting, averaging close to 50 and turning over as a support spinner for 150-200 odd overs a season at an average of 35 or so. Still hard to imagine his contribution could have been any more in his greatest year of 2017 when he turned in not only these terrific first class figures but was consistently brilliant in the one day stuff, played his greatest one day innings (with Mullaney) to win us a semi-final at Chelmsford and another match-winning innings, usual top bowling and two run outs on 2020 Finals day - ranked most valuable player in the country considering contributions across all three formats. What a man.
ReplyDeleteYes, indeed. Performances that stand out off the top of my head. A brilliant 90 odd to help win DivOne in 2010 on that final epic day v Lanky, that superb spell of bowling v Glam in the 40over final at Lords in 2013, a couple of stand out performances in the qtr finald of the T20 at TB and back to back double hundreds a couple of years back. Downside to Samit, he would often hole out when the three card trick was played by the oppo captain when he would insist on taking the hook shot on with two men back in the deep and would sometimes just gift his wicket away on say 40odd when he'd looked brilliant, probably hitting 6 or 7 boundaries with fantastic timing when he was set for a big score. But he is a stroke player, not an Alastair Cook type of accumulator so you have to cut him some slack when considered overall in his brilliant contributions over suck a long period.
ReplyDeleteNottinghamshire veteran, Samit Patel signs a two-year deal.
