A WIN BY AN INNINGS AND 93 RUNS

Day 4

James Hayes took five wickets as Nottinghamshire’s Second XI wrapped up a resounding win over Warwickshire at Portland Road.

Right-armer Hayes took the hosts’ middle order apart, finishing with figures of 5/20 to help Notts to victory by an innings and 93 runs.

Calvin Harrison (2/9), Toby Pettman (2/37) and Tom Barber (1/26) also made useful inroads into a Bears line-up which was dismissed for 207.

Resuming on 56/0, Warwickshire opener Dan Mousley retired not out, with Amir Khan striding to the middle alongside captain Ed Pollock.

Pollock reached his half-century before edging behind off Pettman, who promptly castled his replacement Adam Hose a matter of overs later.

Then came a decisive intervention from Hayes, with Ethan Brookes (10), Amir Khan (11), Dan Lincoln (8) and VV Kelley (2) all departing without seriously troubling the scorers.

In the space of eight overs, Warwickshire had fallen from 113-2 to 131-6, and their misery continued when Barber removed Manraj Johal for 4.

Hayes’ final victim was George Garrett (1), before leg-spinner Calvin Harrison wrapped up the contest by removing Ryan Sidebottom (15) and trapping last man T Ali for a duck.

The Second XI travel to the North East next, with a four-day encounter in Durham beginning on Bank Holiday Monday.

DAY 3

Peter Trego and Sol Budinger both reached three figures as Nottinghamshire’s Second XI amassed a mammoth total on day three of their Championship encounter with Warwickshire.

Budinger, who resumed on 75, brought up his hundred from 87 deliveries, weathering the early loss of opener Matthew Montgomery (147).

The left-hander continued to score freely in the company of skipper Trego, with the duo chalking up a 58-run partnership before Budinger’s enterprising knock came to a close on 112.

Budinger hit 18 fours and three sixes in the course of his innings, and Trego’s innings was similarly typified by an element of attacking intent.

The right-hander found the boundary on 13 occasions before reaching his century, finding support in a steadfast knock from Toby Pettman (30).

Pettman was ultimately adjudged lbw to Manraj Johal, with James Hayes accompanying Trego for four overs before Trego declared Nottinghamshire’s innings closed on 660/8, leaving himself unbeaten on 147.

In reply, Dan Mousley (24*) and skipper Ed Pollock (28*) proceeded untroubled through the remainder of the evening session, reaching stumps 244 in arrears on 56/0.

Day 2

Joey Evison produced a commanding performance at number three to help Nottinghamshire’s Second XI overhaul the first-innings total of their Warwickshire counterparts on day two at Portland Road.

Evison hit 152 from 151 deliveries as Notts closed day two on 392/2 – a lead of 32 runs.

After reaching three figures, the Academy graduate opened his shoulders with aplomb in the latter stages of his innings, moving from 100 to 150 in just 20 balls.

The 49th over of the contest, in which Evison hit Dan Mousley for 21 runs, was the 19-year old’s most explosive, featuring two fours and two sixes.

Evison found able support in the form of opener Matthew Montgomery, who compiled his own century and remained unbeaten on 139 at stumps.

Montgomery brought up his hundred from 133 balls, striking 21 fours, having weathered the loss of his fellow opener Ben Compton (4) in the eighth over.

After Evison’s departure, the right-hander played a supporting role as Sol Budinger punished a tired Warwickshire attack, clubbing an unbeaten 75 from 54 deliveries.

Earlier, Evison and Peter Trego swiftly brought the Warwickshire innings to an end, with the hosts only able to add seven runs to their overnight total.

Ethan Brookes’ resolute stay at the crease was ended by skipper Trego, while Evison induced an edge from the bat of number 11 Ryan Sidebottom to conclude the Bears’ innings on 360.

Day 1

Calvin Harrison took four wickets as Warwickshire’s top order laid a solid platform on day one of the Second XI Championship clash at Edgbaston.

Harrison, who snared a five-wicket haul last week against Leicestershire, broke a 200-run partnership between Dan Mousley and Adam Hose when the latter (139) holed out to Tom Barber.

Hose’s departure left Warwickshire 244/2, with the hosts reaching 353/8 at stumps.

Having won the toss and elected to bat, Warwickshire lost captain Ed Pollock inside five overs, dismissed by his counterpart Peter Trego for four.

Mousley and Hose found the going significantly easier, allowing their side to reach lunch without losing any further wickets.

After Harrison made the breakthrough, however, the visitors enjoyed a little more success in the afternoon session.

First Mousley (100) edged behind off Montgomery, before Dan Lincoln (0) was trapped lbw by leg-spinner Harrison.

Warwickshire then lost Wells (0) and Vikai Kelley (24) to Harrison after the tea interval, before Joey Evison and Peter Trego returned to account for Henry Brookes (11) and Manraj Johal (6) respectively.

But the Bears’ momentum was maintained throughout the clatter of wickets by number four Ethan Brookes, who remained unbeaten on 53 from 126 deliveries at the close.

  1. Terrific strength in reserve just what we need to put pressure on the bowlers in the first team that are unable to take 20 wickets on a consistent basis. Anyone would think we've gone almost 3 years without winning a red ball championship match.
