Durham Vitality T20 Blast at Trent Bridge Win

OUTLAWS THRASH WILTED DURHAM AS DUCKETT STARS

Notts completed their Northern Zone schedule with an easy 78 run victory over visiting Durham at a scorching Trent Bridge. Durham won the toss and elected to bowl on the same wicket for the England-Pakistan T20 slogfest on Friday. Notts were unchanged with Joe Clarke receiving his Notts cap from Darren Bicknell before the game.

Clarke hit the first delivery of the match to the mid wicket ropes off Trevaskis. Off the fifth ball, Clarke hit a four through third man, eight off the over.Hales hit a four through extra cover off Potts, five off the second over. Paul van Meekeren's first ball was hit for 6 over mid wicket by Hales. Two balls later, Clarke hit a boundary through the same area. Hales hit a no ball through backward point for 4 and then top edged a pull shot for 4, 20 off the first over off the former Somerset man who plays for Cuckney in the 2021 Notts Premier League. A fierce drive from Hales off Carse's third delivery saw the bowler hit on the right ear in his follow through. He was escorted of the field by the paramedics, but was fit enough to walk off unaided. Raine finished the over as Hales pulled his last ball for 4, 42 for 0 off 4 overs. Clarke hit Potts for successive fours through third man and mid-wicket, the 50 partnership between Clarke and Galesachieved 27 balls. Hales finished the over with an off side boundary, 14 off the over. Clarke (27 off 19 balls) hit van Meekeren for a straight four but perished next ball top edging an attempted pull shot and was caught atpoint by Lees, 60 for 1. Hales hit a four through long leg, and then hit a four through the vacant slip area. But Hales (35 off 17 balls, 7x4, 1x6) explosive innings ended when he was caught via a skier to mid wicket to Potts, 69 for 2, a second wicket for the Dutchman. Notts finished the power play on 70 for 2.

Borthwick was too good for Moores who fell leg before for a first ball duck, 71 for 3, 2 off the 7th over. Moores apart from a some what fortuitous 48 at Old Trafford, where he was dropped 4 times, has had a poor competition with the bat with 144 runs @14.40 and his scoring rate of 115.20 per 100 balls is much slower than the rest of his batting counterparts. “Less haste, more speed” is probably the solution to the problem, his hand-eye coordination and bat speed being second to none. Trevaskis bowled the following over, Duckett sweeping the slow left armer for four and then hoisting a boundary through mid wicket. Duckett finished the over with six over over square leg, 14 off the over. Duckett swept Borthwick for 4, 9off the 9th over. Raine bowled the 10th over, Patel hitting him for consecutive fours, 108 for 3 off 10 overs.

Borthwick went for three off 11th over. Patel slogged van Meekeren for 4 over mid wicket, 8 off the over. A straight four by Patel off Borthwick saw the 50 partnership with Duckett achieved in 34 balls. Duckett was dropped on the ropes by Lees following a switch hit, Borthwick(4-0-26-1) proved to be the most economical Durham bowler of the afternoon. Patel hit Trevaskis through extra cover. Patel departed next ball caught low down at mid on by Potts off Trevaskis for 34, 138 for 4. There was much debate about the validity of the catch as it looked to have been taken on the half volley, but off Patel (34 off 26balls, 5x4) went. Duckett and Patel had a shared a 4th wicket stand of 67 in 7.2 overs. The next ball was hit for four through mid wicket by Duckett, 142 for 4 off 14 overs.

Occasional leg spinner Clark’s first two balls were hit by Mullaney for sixes over mid wicket, the first from a full toss. Mullaney hit the last 2 deliveries of the over for a straight four and a six over mid wicket, 24 off the over, 23 to the skipper. Duckett hit van Meekeren for 4 through backward square leg, 174 for 4 off 16 overs.

Mullaney hit Potts for an off side four, 10 off the 17th over. Duckett reached his 50 in 30 balls.. The 50 partnership came up in via a four through long leg off Raine. Next ball Mullaney hit a four through extra cover,197 for 4 off 18 overs. Duckett scooped four off Potts to bring up the Notts 200.Duckett was dropped by Bedingham at long leg off Potts, 10 off the over. In the last over, Duckett hit Raine for 6 over mid wicket and 4 extra cover. Notts 221 for 4 off 20 overs. Duckett on 74 (41 balls, 8x4, 2x6) and Mullaney on 43(17 balls, 4x4, 3x6) had topped off the innings with an unbroken 5th wicket partnership of 83 off 31 balls. Duckett’s innings was very mature and most of the runs were on the deck, whereas Mullaney had very much taken the aerial route. The end result was a very imposing total.

Patel (Pavilion End) bowled the first over. Clark fell for a duck caught at fine leg by Chappell, 1 for 1; two runs off the opening over. Lees was bowled by Carter for a 2-ball duck, 3 for 2, three off the second over. Bedingham hit Patel for 6 over mid wicket, 16 for 2 off 3 overs. Bancroft hit Chappell for 4 over mid wicket, 8 off the over. Bedingham hit Paterson’s first ball for 4 through extra cover and next ball was a straight four. He fell next back caught at backward point for 23, 32 for 3. Bancroft hit the fourth ball of the over for four through extra cover, 13 off the over. Bancroft (13) played on to Chappell (2-0-12-1), 37 for 4. Raine hit Chappell for 4 through mid wicket. Durham 41 for 4 off 6 overs.

Raine hit Harrison for 4 behind the wicket, 8 off the over. Carter conceded 6 off the 8th over. Raine (13) was caught at deep backward square leg by Trego off Harrison, 56 for 5. Borthwick was bowled by Harrison for a 2 ball duck, 59 for 6 off 9 overs. Trevaskis hit Mullaney for 4 through third man and then hit him a straight six, 13 off the his solitary over. Trevaskis hit Harrison for a straight four. Dickson hit the leg spinner for 6 over mid wicket. Trevaskis hit Harrison, 16 off the over and aleg bye. The big hitting Trevaskis fell leg before to Carter for a 10-ball 20, 89 for 7, 4 off the 12th over.

Potts hoisted Patel (3-0-37-1) for sixes into the Fox Road and over mid wicket off successive balls and edged him for 4. A full toss was then deposited for a straight 6, 24 off the 13th over. Carter (4-0-19-2) was pulled for 4 by Pottsover mid wicket. Potts (30) was caught by the diving Mullaney in the covers off Dane Paterson, 124 for 8. Luke Donearthy, the concussion replacement for Carse, hit his first ball for a straight four. Dickson hit Paterson(2-0-24-2) for 4 through square leg, 11 off the over. The last 2 wickets fell to Harrison in the 16th over, Dickson (26)was bowled making room . Van Meekeren (9 not out) swept Harrison for 4 then next ball hit him over mid wicket for 4. Doneathy (5) was the last man out stumped by Moores as Harrison finished with figures of 4-36. He has taken 18 wickets @13.94 (6.67 RPO) in the competition this season; an outstanding effort. Durham 143 all out off 16 overs.

Duckett’s outstanding innings was rewarded with the man of the match award as Notts finished the zonal stage with 9 wins, 3 ties and 2 losses to top the group. MAG

  1. No doubt about it .
Notts ccc are now a very watchable team .
In a Blast match - even with a longish tail- you now think thatNotts at 55-4 can easily become 190-8. - and win the match ?

  2. Yes. We are tremendous at this and on the face of it we are the best side. We know that anything can happen in a 2020 but even in the games when our standards have slipped it has taken, and will take, a special effort by the opposition to beat us. Come on Notts.

  3. Hampshire it is. A very experienced opponent in knockout games. Not one I recall us facing often. Their strength as I see it is their opening pair Vince and Short. If both available, an early wicket will be key I suggest.

  4. Presumably it will be a full TB for the quarter final what with covid restrictions being relaxed or even done away with. Hopefully the old system of being to sit where you like in the ground will be the new norm ?. Those that make the effort to get to the ground early then can bag the best seats.
Question ! What is the situation with Dan Christian and the quarter final? He was in the original named squad and Notts did not go and sign a replacement overseas signing . So could he play in the game or not . Anyone know the exact ruling.? Perhaps its a “grey” area?

  5. Thanks for all the really excellent cricket match reports MAG.
It must take a lot of effort and concentration to compile them. If only the Nottm Evening Post had an equivalent cricket writer!

  6. I agree the match reports are indeed excellent. All 4 quarter finals look great. An interesting sub-plot could be any 'horse play' between Directors of Cricket to try to get key players from their opponents' sides called up for England for the Test Series. ECB currently saying not planning a bubble system for the Tests. But some sides may try to encourage ECB to institute one - with a safety focused argument - due to 'rising cases' - but of course it's because their opponents have several fringe England players that the bubble may swallow up out of the quarter final. It is the behind the scenes astute part of sport few people talk about! If Notts push for a bubble, we could get Vince, Dawson and maybe Crane out of the Hants side, but risk losing Duckett and Ball (but it is Tests so maybe less chance). I would say it's Vince Short and Dawson who are the key players for Hants - even if we lose Duckett and Ball, the Hants losses would have far more impact. Yorkshire, Lancashire and Somerset could also be badly affected by a bubble system. Lancashire and Somerset playing each other!
