Northamptonshire Steelbacks Royal London One Day Cup at Gorse Lane, Grantham Win

PATERSON SIX AT THE DEATH SEALS OUTLAWS WIN IN A THILLER AT GRANTHAM

AFTER FIVE STAR LIAM SHINES BRIGHT WITH THE BALL, KEEPING NOTTS KNOCK-OUT HOPES ALIVE

After a fascinating day’s cricket in front of a 1,500 Grantham crowd, Notts pipped Northants by 2 wickets with 2 balls to spare in a breathless finale. Dane Paterson swung hard and hit Ben Sanderson for a glorious straight six to win the contest in memorable style. The pitch was slow and low, runs had to be gathered the hard way which made for an enthralling contest

Northants won the toss and elected to bat. Notts once again were severely depleted with Ben Compton coming in for his List A debut with Lyndon James missing through concussion.

Trego (Pavilion End) and Hutton (Gorse Lane End) opened the bowling in glorious sunshine. In the fifth over,Trego found the edge of Vasconcelos (13) bat and Schadendorf took the catch, 20 for 1. Northants closed the 10 over power play on 39 for 1.

After bowling 5 overs for 19 Hutton made way for Paterson at the Gorse Lane End. Curran (11) hit Paterson straight to Hutton at mid on, 45 for 2. Paterson conceded 13 in the 14th over including 5 wides. Next over, Procter on 3 was dropped by Schadendorf diving to his left off Trego, a regulation chance. Barber replaced Trego (8-0-35-1) from the Pavilion End. Montgomery came on for the 18th over. In the following over, Gay (40) was caught on the deep cover ropes by Slater off Barber, 95 for three. Gay and Procter had compiled 50 runs in 6.4 overs.

Patterson-White had his first bowl in the 22nd over. Keogh hit the expensive Barber (4-0-33-1) for consecutive off side boundaries. Barber who bowled five wides, generated pace but little accuracy and at 26 his career is still to really get out of the starting blocks. His removal from the attack proved to be the turning point, Northants stood at 129 for 3 after 23 overs, they only scored 81 runs in remaining 27 overs as slow left-armer Patterson-White and highly promising 17 year-old Fateh Singh applied the tourniquet to the Northants batting.

Keogh (18) was smartly stumped by Schadendorf off Patterson-White, 130 for four in the 24th over. Singh was introduced for the following over. Patterson-White got one to turn and bowled Zaib (14) off stump,158 for 5 in the 32nd over which was a wicket maiden. With runs hard to come by, Procter (44) swept Patterson-White straight to Paterson at square leg, 168 for 6 in the 36th over. Patterson-White picked up his 4th wicket as Taylor (6) was caught and bowled as the slow left armer took the catch with the ball coming over his shoulder as he ran back towards the boundary, 173 for 7 in the 38th over, another wicket maiden. Patterson-White (10-3-19-5) went nap bowling Kerrigan for 1, 174 for 8. The quality of his bowling was excellent, more so when the experienced Kerrigan bowling from same end later failed to take a wicket.

Hutton returned for the 42nd over. Singh completed his 10 over stint conceding 33. With an excellent action, he clearly is an exciting prospect amongst many on the Notts staff.

Trego returned for the 45th and 47th overs, finishing with figures of 10-0-42-1. Ben Sanderson (16) was bowled leg stump by Hutton, 200 for 9. Paterson (4-0-21-1) bowled the penultimate over. Hutton (8.5-0-38-2) took the final wicket with Jack White caught at deep mid wicket by Paterson. Northants 210 all out off 49.5 overs. They had though added a valuable 36 runs for the final two wickets as James Sales, the 18 year old son of former Northants batsman David finished on 16 not out. It looked a competitive score on an awkward wicket against the inexperienced Notts batting line up

Slater hit 2 fours off the first over bowled by Sanderson (Gorse Lane End). In the third over, Budinger (1) was caught behind by keeper Vasconcelos off Sanderson, 13 for 1. The 7th over bowled by Sanderson went for 13 including two boundaries for Slater. After 4 overs from Jack White from the Pavilion End, Rob Keogh came on with his offspinners. Notts 47 for 1 after 10 overs. Slater and Compton were looking solid.

Slow left armer Kerrigan was introduced in the 13th over. Slater reached his 50 in the 17th over with a single off Kerrigan. Tom Taylor came on in the 22nd over from the Pavilion End and Slater was caught at deep square leg by Sales for 53 (80 balls, 8x4), 90 for 2. A model of consistency throughout the Tournament, Slater scored 395 runs @56.42 in the 8 matches. The second wicket partnership between Compton and himself had added 77 in 19 overs.

Zaib replaced Kerrigan for the following over. Trego fell in the 24th caught behind by Vasconcelos off Taylor for a 7-ball duck,92 for 3. Notts reached the 100 in the 26th over via a four through square leg by Montgomery off Taylor. Compton got to his 50 in 70 balls with a square cut off Zaib in the 31st over. Procter replaced Taylor in the following over, a hairdresser by profession he thus became the second Barber of the match to bowl from the Pavilion End!.

In the 33rd over Kerrigan returned from the Gorse Lane End. Three overs later, Keogh returned and bowled six dot balls and a wide. The 50 partnership came up in the following over. Zaib returned and had Compton (71 of 101 balls, 5x4) bowled leg stump attempting a sweep, 154 for 4 in the 39th over. Compton who had batted sensibly on a pitch that suited his circumspect style had shared a fourth wicket partnership of 62 in 15 overs. Had he done enough to secure another contract?

Notts stood at 160 for 4 off 40 overs. Montgomery (31) was caught at deep square leg low down by the diving Sanderson off Keogh, 168 for 5 in the 42nd over. Schadendorf was leg before attempting a sweep off Zaib for a 4-ball 0, 168 for 6 in the 43rd over, which was a wicket maiden. Only 2 singles came off the following over bowled by Keogh. Patterson-White hit Zaib for 4 through square leg, 8 off the 45th over. Five runs were acquired off the following over bowled by Keogh (10-0-33-1) who had now been bowled out.

Hutton relieved the tension by clubbing Zaib for 6 over mid wicket, 17 runs required off 3 overs. Hutton had hit the first six of the day.

Sanderson came back and he dismissed Patterson-White who in attempting an attacking shot was bowled for 19, 196 for 7, four off the over. Tom Taylor (6-0-24-3) bowled the penultimate over, three dot balls was followed by Hutton (14) being caught at mid off by Gay, 198 for 8. Singh hit the last ball of the over for a magnificent straight boundary, five off the over. Eight required of the last over bowled by Sanderson. Paterson failed to get a run of the first delivery then two singles were obtained. Six required off three. Sanderson into Paterson who steps to leg and clubs a memorable straight six over the bowler’s head, only the second of the contest which had onlyfeatured 28 boundaries (16 to Notts, 12 to Northants). Shades of Kevin Cooper against Eddie Barlow many moons ago!

In a see-saw battle of old style limited overs cricket 421 runs had been scored off 99.3 overs @4.23 RPO. With the sun out and a good crowd in attendance, it proved to be good day for the Grantham club.

The competition, hindered by rain, was an immense challenge for an inexperienced Notts team who had to play all 8 games away from Trent Bridge. It proved a topsy turvy ride but it was a fascinating watch. It was a huge learning curve for them to play against more experienced opponents, with spectators in attendance; it was good to assess the skill of each youngster to go along with their temperament. For some, it will be, I am sure, the start of some long successful careers.

Notts finished with 8 points from 8 games, and canstill sneak through if Derby beat Surrey, Glamorgan beat Yorkshire andNorthants beat Leicester on Thursday. A long shot! MAG

Notts Outlaws, or what remains of Notts Outlaws play their last fixture in the One Day Cup for 2021, barring a string of unlikely results going in their favour, on Tuesday at Grantham.

The first unlikely event would have to be beating Northants which at this stage of the competition would be like a boxer fighting with one arm tied behind his back going for that knock-out punch, not impossible but highly improbable. Northants will need to win to keep their hopes alive also.

It will be a case of who's left to fill the shirts when it comes to the travelling squad to the Lincolnshire backwater, with Lyndon James now subject to concussion protocols and not available either.

Outlaws finished Sunday's game with this line-up: Slater, Budinger, Trego, Montgomery, Patterson-White, Schadendorf, Hutton, Singh, King, Paterson and Barber. The only other body that has made it to the squad in 2021, and is still available, is Toby Pettman. Toby will need some help with the sanitiser, drinks and other paraphernalia carrying.

Zak Chappell, Ben Duckett where are you?

Is there a reason why this fixture isn't at Trent Bridge, the Test is over and the Cuckoo franchise are there again until Friday. Edgbaston and Sophia Gardens counties' seem to manage to co-exist at the same venue as their respective cuckoos?

Add to that the Oval who host Surry v Warwickshire today.

  1. I can confirm that Fateh Singh has not been called-up into the Northern Superchargers squad as a Covid replacement, well not yet any way!

  2. Its a nice ground and a good set uo. Out of town and on top of a hill, so can be windy at times.
Grantham's last competitive Notts game was a complete washout, and cost the hosts dearly.

    1. On a hill with commanding views of bugger all. Windswept and isolated. Bleak. Other than that it's great.

  3. The Grantham match SHOULD be played at Trent Bridge ! Its a scandal it isnt. How many Notts Members can easily get to Grantham and back ?
The Test has finished so why not play the match at TB ? What possible valid reason is there?

It could be argued that the Notts squad is stronger for this match with the middle order class of Ben Compton obviously replacing the inexperienced and unfortunate Lyndon James in the batting line up.

    1. Remind me, what vast reservoir of first team experience has Ben Compton got that he can tap into? Just checked on Crinfo, if he plays, it represents his career List A debut at age 27. If he had it, he would have shown it by now! Wouldn'he? Much like Tom Barber (26)in his bowling - he at least has been given chances by teams but he's failed to take any of them so far. My Grandad rode a motorbike in Italy in WW2, it doesn't mean I'm another Valentino Rossi.

I saw on Twitter that there has been 102 List A debuts this season (so far) - what are the chances of 2/3 more today? Toby, James or Compo.

  5. An experienced Australian XI in a T20 yesterday were bowled out by Bangladesh for 62 in 13.4 overs. DC batting as opener, for future reference, didn't pay off!

  6. I suspect it's simply down to lack of available pitches. Look at the awful surfaces the TR's are playing on in the Hundred, plus we've just had the TM and we've got the RLODC final next week then the Blast qtr final the week after then two more championship games in September. So, put it all together and...........

    1. We managed to play 7 home games in the Blast (in quick succession) using the hybrid pitch - it doesn't take a Rocket Scientist to solve this ...

  7. Good points Pitch Doctor.I agree - a lot of games in the pipeline at TB . So would one more game there make any difference? If this is the future set up at Trent Bridge then teams will just have to play on wickets far from perfect- Test Match and One Day Internationals excepted. With four competitions running at TB from April till late September then the question of worn playing surfaces is always going to be a problem .Is it time for some proper investment in the Lady Bay Sports Ground so that the odd match or two with poorer attendances could be played there? Better that for many members of Notts than the long tricky trek to Welbeck and Grantham and lord knows where else in the future.

    1. Derby appears to have failed its competence test, if last week was an audition for further Notts "home" games - thankfully

  8. Anyone remember or know why those glued pitches aren’t used anymore? . They were in( I won’t say all the rage) about ten years ago.

  9. Oh dear - Sol Budinger gets another very low score. His confidence must be suffering. So what do you do ?
Drop him down the order where a six hit or out policy may be more the norm ?
Or give him a break from the first team . Being one wicket down after so few balls makes it tougher for the incoming number 3 , who virtually becomes an opening bat.
The faithfull travelling supporters to Grantham have been rewarded by marvellous sunny weather and a decent PROPER game of cricket which at 4.14 pm and Notts on 92-3 looks like a Notts victory . Trego is another one with a series of low scores. At 40 he aint going to improve!

A cracking rollercoaster of match. Well bowled Liam and his wingman Fateh, and well batted the two Bens on a difficult surface.

    2. It certainly was a rollercoaster of a game. It was a bit like an old JPL game with the scoring rate at 4 rpo and that being competitive.

  10. 2 teams out of Surrey, Yorks, Somerset (1 point) and Leics (2 points) will spoil Notts ambitions - but all 4 are playing away from home in their last games. The unlikely is still possible.

  11. Excellent write up MAG
    Thanks.
This season Notts have unearthed some very promising home grown youngsters.
A nice headache for Peter Moores and DOC . Who to give fresh contracts to ?
Perhaps the 18 Counties can breathe a sigh of relief . The unexpected success ( by me and most others) of the 100 Ball comp will boost the coffers of the ECB in the coming years and thus all Counties will receive a financial benefit ( a lifeline in one or two cases)
18,000 at the 100 Baller last night saw a thrilling match go almost to the final ball . Again I was amazed at the number of very young fans there enjoying the spectacle.Up to now it looks as though the much vaunted " new audience" of young families has actually become a reality.
Those that watch the games on SKY and BBC 2 free to air can see the generated atmosphere for themselves- it has been electric on occasions .

Very true Cruet, Maybe now we will lose the tag of the club who poach other teams talent, You only have to look at Surrey and Warwickshire and their recent signings to see my point!

  13. Assume we all saw Zak the Chappell of Rest on crutches at the players end of the ground ? Particularly enjoyable day I'm hoping next year that we have 2 games at TB then 1 each at Grantham and Welbeck. Can't see another game at Derby personally.
