Bowler facing sanction for hurling ball at batsman.

PTG 3721-18335.

NSW opening batsman Daniel Hughes was left hurt and unhappy, after Victorian bowler James Pattinson threw the ball and struck him on the foot on the final day of their Sheffield Shield match at the Melbourne Cricket Ground on Monday. Hughes, who was in the 87th over of an eventual 112 over stay at the wicket that saw him carry his bat, played a ball back to Pattinson and remained in his crease, and the bowler’s pick up and throw appeared to have no justification in the circumstances.

There was a three-minute delay as team medics went onto the ground before play continued. Pattinson’s following delivery was a bouncer that Hughes ducked with ease. Umpires Phillip Gillespie and Tony Wilds have, under Cricket Australia’s Code of Conduct (CoC), the choice of reporting Pattinson for either a Level One or Two offence of: "Throwing a ball at or near a Player, Player Support Personnel .. .. in an inappropriate and/or dangerous manner during a Match”.

Should he be found guilty of a Level One charge by match referee Bob Parry, Pattinson could either be reprimanded or lose up to half his match fee plus one suspension point. If its graded at Level Two his match pay would be docked by between 50 and 100 per cent, and two suspension points would be attached to his disciplinary record.

Pattinson’s last offence was almost exactly two years ago therefore anything he is charged with from Monday’s incident falls outside the 18 month period in which a ’top up’ of the basic charges applies. His last reported offence led to him being suspended from playing in the first Test of a series against Pakistan, for it was his third CoC breach in 18 months (PTG 2945-14614, 18 November 2019).

  1. I do like to see a competitive spirit - maybe he overstepped a little, but it's not a big deal in my opinion.

  2. Never mind Jamie. In the crazy Cricket World of 2021, it is a badge of honour to be suspended.
