Joe Clarke sees a faint glimmer...
Joe Clarke has received some recognition from Team England at last, but only very slight recognition - a non-traveling CoVID reserve for the series in the West Indies.
The actual squad is minus Broad and Anderson, with Durham's Yorkshireman Alex Lees being lined up as the next opener to fail, his only saving grace is that he's not failed yet. I would have said Lees was behind Burns, Hameed, Stoneman (who he replaced at Durham), Robson and Lyth but they have all being viewed as past-failures for now.
The squad: Joe Root (Yorkshire) captain, Jonathan Bairstow (Yorkshire), Zak Crawley (Kent), Matthew Fisher (Yorkshire), Ben Foakes (Surrey), Dan Lawrence (Essex), Jack Leach (Somerset), Alex Lees (Durham), Saqib Mahmood (Lancashire), Craig Overton (Somerset), Matthew Parkinson (Lancashire), Ollie Pope (Surrey), Ollie Robinson (Sussex), Ben Stokes (Durham), Chris Woakes (Warwickshire), Mark Wood (Durham).

Joe Clarke has hit four fifties since Christmas, two of which were in the eighties, whereas Harry Brook has hit nothing much in his seven innings during BBL 11 (a top score of 22 his best effort).
Alex Hales is unselectable whilst Captain Morgan calls the shots, I think Morgan's empty promises have been clear for all to see over the past couple of years, but is Joe Clarke now persona non grata as well?
It doesn't seem fair or that the best choices are being to made to make England as strong as possible...
Harry Brook is certainly an outstanding prospect for the future, but they also said the same about Joe Clarke.
Brook Selection click or swipe
Joe could change his name to Surrey McSurrey-Face, that should get him selected.
ReplyDeleteYes, it does seem there still some sort of agenda hanging over Joe Clarke and his non selection issues. Although you could argue it was distasteful and immature laddish behaviour was it really that bad to still affect his selection some years down the line. There’s plenty down the years to have been caught up in much more severe off the field instances or is this the new squeaky clean England ? If so there’s someone still being picked who is certainly no stranger to off the field issues but seems to have had the slate wiped clean for him to play for England again. I hope that’s not the case and purely and simply they think Harry Brook is a just a better option for international cricket and he is ahead of Joe Clarke currently.
ReplyDeletePolitics and sport .
ReplyDeleteNot a good mixture
Definitely seems to me like his omission is not solely down to what he does in the middle.
ReplyDeleteLike when Sir Tony of Blair went on Football Focus on BBC 1 and pretended he was a true Newcastle Utd supporter and managed to successfully answer a couple of spoon fed questions that had been prepared for him by the reporter ? And when apparently the England t20 World Cup winning side went to No.10 for a reception and man of the people David Cameron referred to Paul Collingwood as Mr. Wood as he’d been told his name was Colin Wood. Absolutely priceless and along the same lines as getting Ms.Purstrings on celebrity mastermind with her specialist subject of “What it’s like to sit in the Fox Rd Stand on a Friday night for a T20 game at TB”
ReplyDeleteNotts MUST get out of Division 2 in 2022
ReplyDeleteTrent Bridge needs the bigger and better County sides playing there . Its not a Division 2 type of ground . So we need all our top players performing well for the first 11 . Joe Clarke probably merits an England recall . But Englands loss is Notts gain and his stats for 2022 could make a difference to us getting those vital extra few points to gain promotion.
Is it a trifle strange that Ollie Pope retains his place in the mass cull ? If it were about backing young players for the future then surely stick with Haseeb also and give him more time to prove himself ? Or is the Pontiff already earmarked as one of the golden boys of England cricket who will get more chances than most ? If Alex Lees fails, where do they go to then ? Give Ben Slater a go or go back to Dom”The Bore”Sibley again? Do we assume Joe Clarke has now got an even chance, on ability, now that Ashley Giles is out of the way ? Really wonder what Stuart Broad’s motivation will be when he rocks up early season, if he thinks his Test playing days are numbered. Up to now his effort cannot be questioned for Notts. He has always given his full commitment to the cause, with the caveat that often he has been returning from injury or enforced lay off with England.
ReplyDeleteI hope that Stuart Broad decides to play on with Notts for the next two seasons or possibly more. Even if his England playing days are over.
ReplyDeleteAs the old saying goes " you are a long time retired!"
Yes, I’d be a bit disappointed if Broady ‘did a Graeme Swann’ also. However, he’s done pretty much everything in the game and he is very good working with the media and I don’t think he will be short of offers should he decide to hang his boots up. Although playing for Notts would be a dream job for the supporters of the club, you do wonder what his motivation levels would be playing if he’s been told his England days are basically over ? I don’t think they are, personally. I think he will play Test cricket this season with it being in the home conditions where himself and James Anderson thrive so much. It’s refreshing when all time Test greats like Sir Alistair Cooke continue to play for their county after they’ve announced their international retirement and still enjoy cricket on the county circuit
ReplyDeleteStuart is a true champion of the game.
ReplyDeleteHe is right to feel angry and "confused", in his words. Anyone who is at the top of their profession would feel it deeply.
He really is in a place to decide,
Is that it ? Has he had enough of the aches and pains and wants to turn to other things in life ?
If so, there would be sadness among us, but I for one would respect his decision.
Does he want to give it one more big go ?
That means playing for Notts and producing performances that will make it very difficult for the, by then, new selection set up not to pick him.
Or does he want to play on for as long as the body still says "yes" ?
That would mean wanting to play on whether or not England come calling again.
For him, and Jimmy, only they know, only they can and should decide.
But they will always be Champions.
Every now and then , two " legends" appear at the same time and play for years in tandem in the England Eleven .Larwood and Voce , Trueman and Statham , Lock and Laker , Willis and Botham plus later combinations which are argued over . Broad and Anderson are right up there at the very top. Performing year after year , staying pretty fit overall , and producing the thrills and spills that make them so watchable. They must now have doubters pulling the strings amongst the decision makers . No matter what the future holds for them , they have each had a long innings and left us with many great memories.
ReplyDeleteOn the Test cricket theme, sad to see South Africa bowled out in under 50 overs for a paltry 95. Not very long ago a batting line up with Smith, Gibbs,Kallis, Amla, DeVilliers, Boucher. This current weaker team also loses its best batsmen Quinton de Kock at a young age to white ball. What’s the focus now for new players coming through their domestic system I wonder and it’s obviously trying to cash in with the Hundred, Big Bash, PSL, IPL etc. It may be the way cricket is going, but we don’t have to like it(or do we?)
