The Cricketer magazine states that Olly Stone is headed to Trent Bridge, turning his "stress fractured" back on Warwickshire. Stone, as the article states, may be out for the rest of this season with a finger injury, ironically after pulling out of Second XI game against Notts this week.
Notts have been loaning bowlers this season, such is the wealth of bowlers at Peter Moores' disposal, so why acquire another injury prone quick bowler, as good as Stone is when he's actually playing? Olly is of the same vein as our own Jake and Zak...
Could it be that some on the current staff are to be released?
George Dobell, not one to have a dig at Notts, not. Is Stone a pal of Duckett from their Northants days? Worrying that Moores/Newell believe that we need another injury prone, highly renumerated quick bowler when most of the time we have at least 2 others in a similiar position sitting out game because they are crocked.
ReplyDeleteThis potential signing has got Newell stamped all over it.
ReplyDeleteThis will complete his hat trick of signing a bunch of crocks, that is Chappel, Coughlan, and now the injury prone Stone. A trilogy of tragedies.
If Stone is ever fit, then he will be in the England frame, such is the dearth of quick bowling talent in the English game, so his time on the pitch for Notts will be similar to Broad, but realistically less, with his injury record.
If I were managing Notts, I would be more focused on trying to ensure game time and development for some of the talented young players currently doing time at Lady Bay, and not wasting the clubs money on a perennial sick note.
Signing the likes of Stone, is doing nothing for their potential careers in first class cricket.
Unfortunately for Notts, Newell's default modus of operandi, is to sign players from other counties, irrespective of their fitness record..
Lazy management and a total waste of the clubs funds.
The club, through short sighted management, have allowed talented players to drift away from Trent Bridge in recent years, through lack of first team opportunities. I am afraid that this trend in likely to continue, with the current management in situ.
Mo Sheikh, a member of the Warwickshire coaching staff, was next to me at the stiffs game last Monday and was talking to a bears supporter about him. Was saying he’s a real handful for batsmen as he’s got pace and an awkward style for batsmen.
ReplyDeleteReports he’s not happy at their offer of a reduced contract thus alerting other Counties.
Everything is right with him except for one very small problem and that is he doesn’t seem to play many games which is not altogether surprising after a stress fracture of the back…….
Could Mick’s ears have pricked up and he’s about to get his chequebook out again ?
Did he not say something along the lines that Zak The Chappell of Rest would be spearheading our attack for the next 10 years when the foxes faithful would tell you it was hard to get him out on the pitch on a consistent basis
Stone was easily too good for Budinger&Co(as you would obviously expect) but is this a risk we do not need to take ? We have got Pettman(a Fletch type of accurate bowler and James’Purple’Hayes(a bowler with pace, albeit needs more accuracy but he’s only young) doing pretty well for the stiffs and in the case of Pettman doing ok when sent out on loan to play county cricket recently. Or are we desperate with Jake Ball’s ongoing fitness problems and The Chappell of Rest seemingly being out of the picture at Notts ? You also wonder whether Patto,if he came back, would take wickets in Division One now his pace is dramatically reduced from the destroyer of batsmen we saw originally back in 2017 but still suggest we would do better to look elsewhere possibly than take a big gamble on ‘The Rolling Stone’ ?
It'll be interesting to find out how many matches he's played in the last couple of years
ReplyDeleteSince his move from Northants in 2016 he has played the following number of Championship games for the Bears 2017 -1, 2018 - 7, 2019 - 2, 2020 - 1, 2021 - 4 , 2022 - 0 Total 15 games We've possibly not signed him for his red ball contribution.
ReplyDeleteYes, a very good point made by Mark above, assuming he could somehow stay fit under the magical guidance of Dr. Bansil & Liam Price et all, then surely the 3 Lions would come calling again, so just how many games would he actually play for us ?
ReplyDeleteThat’s an interesting observation Nottsviewer, are you suggesting he would only be a white ball contracted player for us or he would be used VERY Sparingly in the county championship if he signed an all-format deal ? The Chappell of Rest actually signed one of these latter format deals, we just didn’t realise it at the time this would be the case ?
They will enjoy watching him in
ReplyDeleteAbu Dhabi.
So then, less than 20 championship games in 6 seasons - huge gamble ?
ReplyDeleteGreat move for the Rolling Stone personally, however, a 3 year contract which the Bears wouldn’t offer him.
Another welcome addition through the doors of Dr. Bansil’s treatment room though presumably he will lose his ‘case study’ The Chappell of Rest ?
The news that Olly Stone is on his way to TB will concern Notts long list of bowlers, Another space in the side likely to be lost, Yet more discouragement for the likes of Toby Pettman , I accept that if we get promoted then Stones extra pace could be more than useful, But as many have alread 2y mentioned there is the possibility that if Notts somehow keep him fit they will lose him to England.
ReplyDeleteAlready we have the likes of Brett Hutton not being able to find a regular place in the team One of the reasons i seem to remember that he left to join Northants a few years back, Do we really want to run the risk of losing him again?
Some questions need to be asked, Is Jake Ball likely to play red ball cricket again, Is it likely that Jimmy Pattinson will return next season or is it envisaged that Stone will replace him in the team and finally are we likely to be waving goodbye to Pettman ( i would imagine Derbyshire will snap him up if they can ) and Chappell ( most likely to Gloucestershire).
Some very good questions in your article
DeleteThanks for your thoughts , very interesting . I'm also wondering who'll be leaving trent bridge. One thing's for sure there'll be a lot of speculation in the coming weeks
