Lancashire Metro Bank Cup at Welbeck CC Loss

JENNINGS GUIDES LANCS HOME AFTER NOTTS COLLAPSE EARLY ON

Lancashire cruised to a 7-wicket victory with 9.1 overs to spare at Welbeck today. Notts losing all three games up in North Notts.

With Calvin Harrison called up to The Hundred, Brett Hutton came back into Eleven. Josh Bohannon was injured (calf) in the warm up so veteran Steven Croft came into the Lancashire team for his 50-over appearance of 2023.

On a sunny morning with a strong south westerly blowing. Notts won the toss and surprisingly elected to bat on a green pitch in front of a crowd of around 1,200.

Williams (Charlie French End) and Bailey opened the bowling and with ball zipping around on a typical Welbeck slow seamer, Slater and Martindale were becalmed. In the 6th over, Slater (1), after plenty of playing and missing, edged Bailey to Hurst behind the stumps, 7 for 1. In the following over, Martindale (6) was lbw to a inswinger from Williams 9 for 2. In the 9th over, Hameed hit Williams for on driven four, the sole boundary for Notts in the powerplay. Three balls later, James (2) shouldering arms was bowled by Williams, 18 for 3. Notts failed to add to their score as they ended a miserable 10 over powerplay on 18 for 3. The decision to bat had already been shown to be the wrong option.

Tom Aspinwall replaced Williams in the 13th over. In the following over, Montgomery (3) was lbw to Bailey , 23 for 4. Balderson replaced Bailey for the 18th over, Hameed hitting his first delivery to the mid-wicket boundary and his third ball was cover driven for four. Hameed (18) fell the very next ball caught behind by Hurst, 42 for 5. Notts innings was tatters, with experienced pair of Hameed and Slater continuing their poor form in the competition.

Two cover driven boundaries for Patterson-White off Balderson saw Notts to 50 in the 20th over. King hit Aspinwall for consecutive offside boundaries, 10 off the 21st over. Sammy King who had played a fine attacking innings in Norwich, impressed during his cameo innings, proving evidence of that unlike the rest of teammates a real ability to give the ball a good whack. He was always looking to be positive, although twice his running between the wickets was called into question, nearly running himself out each time.

In his following over, Aspinwall went for 11 including boundaries for Patterson-White and King. Slow left armer Jack Morley was lofted for six over mid-wicket by King in his opening over, the 24th of the innings. Balderson switched ends for the 25th over. King (37 off 44 balls, 4x4, 1x6) was caught at deep square leg by Lavelle off Morley, 92 for 6 in the 28th over. The 6th wicket stand between King and Patterson-White added 50 in 10 overs. The Notts 100 came up in the 30th over with a single for Patterson-White off Morley. Croft (3-0-9-0) was introduced for the 33rd over. Williams returned this time from the Spion Kop End for the 34th over. Notts lost two wickets in 4 balls. Aspinwall (8-1-34-1) who had come on for the 38th over bowled top-scorer Patterson-White (39 off 50 balls, 5x4) backing away making room, 148 for 7. The 7th wicket partnership had raised 56 in 10 overs. Morley (9-0-43-2) came on and Schadendorf (32 off 39 balls, 4x4) attempting a cut shot last his off bail, 149 for 8 in the 39th over. The frugal Bailey (10-4-22-2) returned for the 42nd over. Hutton hit him for 6 over mid-wicket, nine off the 44th over. Hutton (17) was caught at deep wicket by Williams off Balderson (9-0-36-2), 171 for 9 in the 46th over. Williams returned for the 47th over. Eight came off the 48th over bowled by Balderson including a four through long leg by Loten. Loten (14) was last man to fall caught at deep wicket by Bell off Williams (9.5-1-32-3), 185 all out off 48.5 overs. Paterson 5 not out. A disappointing uncompetitive total with the wicket clearly easing during the Notts innings.

Hutton (Spion Kop End) and Paterson opened the bowling and kept a lid on things with Lancashire making a circumspect start. In the 7th over, Bell (2) skied Hutton and was caught at cover by Slater, 14 for 1. Lancashire closed the powerplay on 24 for 1 off 10 overs. The experienced pair of Jennings and Croft played the situation superbly, taking a mainly risk-free approach adding 102 in 22 overs in batting conditions far easier than first thing this morning..

Jennings hit consecutive boundaries off Hutton (7-1-19-1) in the 11th over and then in the following over he lofted James, who had replaced Paterson, for a straight six. After one over from the Charlie French End, James (5-0-23-0) switched to the Spion Kop End. A straight driven boundary by Croft off Loten (3-0-14-0) saw Lancashire passed 50 in the 14th over.

Montgomery bowled four overs from the Charlie French End and was replaced by Paterson in the 28th over as Jennings and Croft gently chugged along.

Patterson-White, who was introduced in the 23rd over from the Spion Kop End, took two wickets with consecutive balls in the 29th over. Croft (38 off 58 balls, 3x4) was caught behind and Vilas went for a golden duck caught at first slip by Montgomery, 116 for 3. Balderson joined Jennings and saw Lancashire home sharing an unbroken 4th wicket partnership of 71 in 12 overs.

Jennings smashed three boundaries in four balls off Paterson (8-2-35-0), 14 off the 32nd over. Montgomery returned for the 34th over and the spin duo remained on for the rest of the game. Jennings who had been in complete control got to his 100 off 123 balls with three towards the extra cover ropes off Montgomery (8-0-37-0) in the 40th over. In the next over, at 17:21 a four through point by Balderson (31 off 41 balls, 4x4 off Patterson-White (9.5-0-54-2) saw his team to an away quarter-final in Bristol. Lancashire skipper Jennings the rock of the innings finished with 103 not out (off 125 balls, 13x4, 1x6) his second ton in the competition in which he has scored 361 runs @95.50. His form in total contrast to Notts skipper Haseeb Hameed who scored a grand total of 97 runs @13.85, this after registering a first duck against Norfolk. Along with a disappointing campaign for Ben Slater (171 runs @24.42) and the failure to sign an overseas batsman its easy to see why Notts failed to qualify for the final six finishing fifth in the Group A standings.

Notts need a fresh and more ambitious approach to 50-over competition in 2024 with at least 2 games at Trent Bridge top of list. MAG

21/08

The squad is the thirteen left from the original fourteen.

Ben Slater
Ben Martindale
Lyndon James
Haseeb Hamee
Matt Montgomery
Liam Patterson-White
Dane Schadendorf
Sammy King
Brett Hutton
Dane Paterson
Toby Pettman
Fateh Singh

So no return for Samit Patel, dumped by the Rocketters, making one final appearance for the Notts Outlaws before he bites Derbyshire's hand off for a two year contract*. Perhaps he's gambling and saving that last hoorah for The Final, on a bigger stage than out of the way Welbeck. I'm Mick would have given him a lift. Mind you, Samit could have a CPL gig lined-up already.

* if stories are to be believed.

Qualification for the play-offs is still a possibility for Outlaws; Hampshire beating Kent and Notts beating Lancashire are the results required. Hampshire, in looking for an automatic semi-final berth, will be eager to sweep Kent aside but the Notts part of the equation is the difficult jigsaw piece to fit into place after two defeats at Welbeck this season so far. Should Notts get to nine points, they face a trip to either New Road or Brizzol on Friday.

For Outlaws there won't be Calvin Harrison, after he took a wicket with a quarter of the balls he bowled for the Manchester franchise earlier today, in that shadow tournament, ever ball counts! At least 25% of 'em did for Calvin. So, will Peter Moores announce a squad of thirteen, or will he conjure-up a fourteenth name (perhaps his son's name)?

I would expect Brett Hutton back into the XI for the Original Harrison but could Fateh Singh make an appearance too?

CALVINS late call to fame and possibly fortune in the HINDRED may well tip the balance against Notts qualifying to the Metro knockout stages .
Its all just reached a very messy situation with vital players coming and going at speed between the two competitions.

  2. I'm sure they haven't visited welbeck
In any of the previous games this month
So wouldn't be surprised if again it's a no- show for tomorrows game

  3. Suspect ‘Grandad’ is just too busy to attend such a minor event
He’s got all his day time tv to catch up on and then decide what his clothing is for the day.
It could be his ‘Grandad’ cardigan or his Notts Outlaws hoody or his “saville row” blue suit as he juggles all his onerous roles at the drop of a hat - not an easy decision by any means

  4. Shocking decision to bat first
A green new wicket with plenty of seam & bounce

  5. Teflon Mick has indeed put in an appearance

NOTTS outplayed from virually the first ball of the match . We urgently need a match winning all rounder who can perform most of the time and not just very occasionally . So its three games played this season at Welbeck and its produced poor results for us. Cant see it being repeated next year?
Time for Notts to let some old timers go who are now just making up the numbers
    A simple question !
How is it that certain players who are apparently unfit for the 50 oved game and 4 dayers suddenly make miraculous improvements and so are able to perform in the HINDRED comp ?
I would if financial game comes into the equation ?
Am I being too cynical ?
( if so - I plead not guilty . Its an age thing )

YES THE MATCH SCHEDULE IS BONKERS!
So unfair on the Notts faithfull . Still yhe height of summer and no cricket to watch at our HOME GROUND
( thats TRENT BRIDGE for those who might have forgotten )
I reckon my 2023 Notts Members will wait until they know the 2024 fixture list before renewing . The fixtures this season have been truly chaotic and without any purpose or rhythm.
Things surely can only get better next year!!??

  10. I think most members will take a hard look before renewing 2024 membership it's certainly not worth what it was' the club have been taking its loyal members for granted for many years now
The club's hierarchy needs to be careful what they wish for as the numbers could just fall off the cliff

  11. I suggest Grandad Rocketman and possibly ultra cautious Head Coach Peter are just not taking this still prestigious competition as seriously as some other sides do, but why is that so(?) who on earth knows
Apparently we made an approach for Fumbling Tom(hopefully just as a batsman) so what went wrong there with the new ruling ?
But you just cannot legislate for Benny Slats( who really should be drinking in the last chance saloon after this season) and quality batsman Hameed having such awful campaigns
But it’s difficult for us and now Calvin is called up to the Aboriginals( not that that there was much spin on that Welbeck track) so we are weaker than last season as Lord Budinger has gone to the Foxes 🦊 and his replacement Ben Martindale looks only good enough for the Dog & Duck 3rd eleven at present
So a pretty average season in reality and let’s wait for the excuses from Rocketman Teflon and coach Peter
We got a lift back from a kindly steward who lives near us in Colwick and in his car on five live sports xtra was dear old Ollie Stone commentating on the Hindred…..perfectly entitled to do so of course, but talk about taking the ****

  12. Trent Rickets (no typo error) to take off, Mens and Womens. So all that coaching power has led to ?????

  13. Einstein said, insanity is doing the same thing over and over again and expecting different results.

Effectively the same squad throughout in the same places. How many top order batting collapses? How many scores over 300? What is Martindale's strike rate? What are the averages for Slater and Hameed? Why not use a pinch hitter in the power play when two fielders are out of the circle? Why did Loten bat at 3 v Hants? Why are those lower down the order picking up the pieces? Why not open with Montgomery, Patterson-White , Ling or Schadendorf?

I reckon I could bat at Martindale's strike rate. What a complete and utter shambles.

Win the toss and bat at Welbeck was laughable. I reckon a 10 year old would have had more idea.

If this was at the City Ground, Newell and Moores would be well gone. What a poor one day and T20 summer. I wont make a judgement on the Championship, but that has been pretty mediocre to date.

I wont even start on how new signings get worse when they sign for Notts, or improve when they leave. In one day or T20 cricket, Olly Stone didnt get any runs and bowled three balls. How much are we paying for him?

It would be laughable if it was not true.

Some good points made in the above posting .
The comfy GRAVY TRAIN just goes around and around at Notts and obviously no one wants to get off . One or two should be asked to jump off - they know who they are .
The days when bad sighnings and strategic failure ended in honourable resignations are long since gone . We already have two Doctors posting on these various threads but there are several more “ spin Doctors” at Notts HQ putting a gloss finish on a poor season . A season that was said to promise a lot but in the end delivered very little . The players , coaches and staff in general have generous renumeration packages and excellent all round facilities at TB . But the end results do not justify the vast expense and top heavy staff numbers . What on earth are they all doing apart from slapping each other on the back for a job well done ! ( sic).
List the high points of this season . Then list the low points.
Heads will surely roll at seasons end?

  15. On another note is master Hales worthy of a new contract? He didn't do much firing for the so called Rocket's and not much blasting for us.Is he just happy to take the money?

    ReplyDelete
  16. Heads will roll ? Somehow i doubt it, If Notts retain division one status then you can almost guarantee the powers that be will consider it a job well done.

Not that i disagree with what others have talked about above, Something does need to be done to get rid of the self satisfied culture that seems to be far to prevalent at Notts these days.

On a more positive note its good to see LPW back and taking wickets he has been missed.

I won't go into some of the failures from batsmen who should really do a lot better, They all know they need to do better in what remains of the season.

As for the unused Rockets Notts players perhaps they need too find some cricket somewhere given it will be around siweeks since they last played.

  17. Notts needs a total reset from top to bottom it's a totally stale environment it requires fresh ideas & energy in which new voices can invigorate the whole changing room
It's all been to cosy for coaches & players over many years

  18. https://www.espncricinfo.com/records/tournament/averages-batting-bowling-by-team/one-day-cup-2023-15159?team=1282

    7 matches - 0 centuries, 6 half-centuries.
Montgomery the only player averaging over 30.
Only 13 players used - essentially only 11.
Pace bowling has done a good solid job without anyone getting close to Hutton's record last year.
LPW has returned and done ok considering he's spent the rest of the season out of form / injured. Harrison's bowling was surprisingly ineffective. Martindale has done ok as young player in his first run in the team, and opening, and in no form in the second XI.
Glad we didn't recall ageing / overweight / part-time players from elsewhere as it's difficult enough for young players* to get games even without them.
    * Young players at Notts being aged 20 to 23/4 - as opposed to being 17 to 20/1 at other counties.

Overall, disappointing yet somehow getting to the last group game with a decent chance of reaching the knockouts.

    1. Thanks for your assessment. I think that is safe to say that Notts started this competition with zero expectation of progressing to the knock-out stages. The club made zero investment in the squad to make it more competitive and we got as far as we deserved this year. Other counties have shown to have differing priorities, signing overseas players specifically for the Metro Bank Cup, loaning players from other counties or recalling unused players from the parallel competition. If Notts wish to use the one day cup as way to blood youngsters then then should really stop playing the likes of Hameed and Slater, neither are going to make it as one day players beyond the level that they are at now, Hameed's game is just not suited to it and Slater had plateaued before he came to Notts with an average that is now in a downward direction, even when playing against second eleven bowling attacks as is the case with half the counties. The over reliance on Hutton and Paterson must be of concern too.

    2. It's not so much the fact that we haven't got to the knock out stages, it's that we haven't even made any real attempt to.

  19. Heartened to see comments on here in line with my own. There is a complacency and a smug satisfaction that hangs in the air around TB. The only time this club has had anything like a winning culture it has been brought in from overseas by winners such as Rice, Hadlee and Fleming. What other large scale organisation would countenance a relationship between two members of the Exec? When did we last produce a quality batsman instead of having to poach from other counties? As someone stated above it’s a totally stale environment and it seems everyone is happy with the mediocrity. The attitude is we’ve won nothing again but haven’t we got a lovely ground. Total reset needed

SOME THOUGHT PROVOKING COMMENTS ON THIS THREAD!
Underlying seething discontent amongst faithful Members .
Without a loyal Membership the Club are nothing
Notts should bare this in mind when taking future decisions .
Hard earned money can easily be spent elsewhere.
